Just did my first ever render on a very, very rough wall, completely shot concrete retaining wall, holes, very uneven and all of Blaines advice made it so much easier, - Thanks so much keep up the posts!
Adrewgarland..... How did that work out ? That's what I've.. a rough concrete retaining wall that needs repairing and rendering. Did you use the mix that Blaine used.
I’m currently doing a rendering / skimming course at college for ten weeks to get a basic understanding, your videos really come in handy and explain what I’m leaning to a new level. I’m hoping one day I can take this up as a career. Thanks for creating these videos
find a plasterer and builder work as a apprentice/labourer while you do your course like i do learn much quicker and better iv already started plastering after 7/8 months with no course
Absolutely HUGE thank you for this! I’m about to have a go at patching up some render on the top half of our house, I learnt so much from this! Cheers!
@@JaiJai-by4tp Firstly I said I have picked up a few handy tips not tried to learn my job . Secondly I certainly would not consider Blain an Amateur! @paulgiles452 Sorry Paul but like you I've been I the trade longer than I care to remember and there's nothing in this vid that an experienced tradesman can Learn that's a simple fact of what's here.
@paulgiles452 if he's using a paddle mixer to mix cement instead of a cement mixer its amateurish fir how it mixes abd how much is needed to do the job
Thank you for taking the time to film and publish this very helpful video. Thanks to you I had a go and re-rendering parts of my garage wall. Not to your professional standard obviously, but I'm pleased with the result and will take on a bigger rendering project next time.
I am so glad I checked out your channel. I am currently working on a 1920s house and need all the advice and tips i can get. I already had some knowledge and experience in building trade work, but I wanted up to date knowledge. This channel is now my must-have. Thank you so much. Subscribed
Interesting video. Over here in Australia traditional cement render we do in one coat approximately 10mm thick, only time you’d do a scratch coat is if the brickwork was crap and you need to make the render thicker to compensate and get a flat surface. We use fine clean sand, cement and builders clay and add about a cap full of bycol (soapy type of liquid solution) to the water for the perfect mix! Without bycol the cement mixture tends to separate (water separates from sand & cement in the wheel barrow) and makes application a lot harder. No waterproofing in mixture and finished surface is painted.
Hi CRO13B. I'm in Hunter Valley area, Sydney too. Do you render full time? Wanting to see first hand for a day how it's done so i can render my place. I'm a painter and decorator. Huge fan of the rotors too of course!! Cheers.
@@awesomestepdad5311 hey mate, no it’s been almost 20 years since I was rendering full time so I can’t really help you out. To be honest it’s not something you can learn in a day. Theoretically it’s straight forward but in practice it takes time (I’d say a year) to learn and get the feel and understanding of.

I'm hoping that with the aid of your videos (watched the steps, and cills already), that I can make repairs to the arches and make them good. Much cheaper than making new moulds, knocking the old concrete ones out, and casting new ones. Thanks for your helpful videos. Wish me luck
Subscribed! Thanks for the informational video. I will be doing some interior plastering on my 1845 brick house in the future. My 1890s shop needs a protective surface on it's north facing wall. Hi Just found your channel.....im a complete beginner...any women on here in my position 😃 hopefully i can learn how to do this....you make it look so easy...thanks for this channel....this will be a challenge but willing to be successful then there will be no stopping me 😃👍
Very informative video. How would one apply scratch coat to a lightweight block wall thats already got a crap layer of scratch coat on. (Top coat became un bonded and came of as a huge slab)
Good video mate & nice finish. I started out as a plasterer as my main trade, and am a handyman/Chippy now . I haven't rendered for a while, but I still do joining plastering at times. You gave me a quick remind of the simple process as specially if u know the trade. Thanks mate keep up the good work. 👍
Great job, looks really well. In Ireland we would do that in 3 coats, the first coat would be called the "scud" coat which is basically strong 3:1 sand:cement mix, fairly wet and thrown onto the wall to give a mechanical key for the following 2 coats (scratch and finish).
The traditional approach in Ireland is 3 coats for good reason, I think. Concrete blocks may have small holes, open face but they are pretty smooth nowadays so a good scud coat is a good practice. Secondly we get driving rain here and our exposure conditions mean that a lot of practices and details used in UK, (except for Scotland) would not fly here. I think if I say a plasterer trying to get away without doing a scud coat on work in Ireland I'd consider it to corner cutting and poor practice.
@@carpenteire seems your going with the way you were taught. Trust me. its a waste of time. Scud isnt even applied correctly here. if done right maybe its effective. But its not applied correctly
Great video and tips. It has jogged my memory as I’d forgotten about scratch coats, floats etc well most of what I learnt really. Thank you, have got a couple of walls to do and now feel confident again.
Great video .. very well explained.. It would have been great if you could complete the render by painting it as I was wondering if there is any specific process to paint .:
Thanks mate, great video 💪 I was wondering how long to leave between stages, ie how much does the render have go off before you can ruler it, float it and sponge it?
Hi, great video can I ask how you finished off the wall where it joins to the brick? Did you place pvc there or something else? What’s the process for that please? Thank you
Hi Blaine You have inspired me to render my wall adjoining my neighbour. It is a retaining wall as we are on a slope. there are drainage holes along the wall near ground level. the property was built in the 60's so there is some damp patches on the bricks. I obviously need to clean the wall and get all the loose mortar and eroded brickwork out before I start but....... do I need to treat the wall before rendering and if so what with?
I am considering some rendering to the front of my property. Not all but about 30% to give it an updated look. Do you know if there are any guidelines regarding the amount of rendering you can have done and does the Planning Dept need to be notified? Is there a per square metre cost used by the trade as an estimate to give to clients? Not something I would tackle myself especially if it is the front of the property. Really enjoyed the video and advice. Thank you.
When you render very large areas for example the front of a house do the top coat all at once and finish it or can finish it in sections? I'm worried about not being quick enough and it dries
Great video thanks. Any advice on how to render a very rough finish brick wall where the mortar was left hanging out on what was an inside brick wall that was never supposed to be seen. Is it just a matter of a really thick base coat ? Thanks in advance.
