Good vid mate. I’d love to do some rendering. I’m a self taught plasterer, decorator/multi trader by trade, but the amount of shoddy plastering I had to sort out while painting gave me the desire to learn. RUclips has literally taught me from scratch and 4 years on I’m the sole plasterer for 4 firms and plaster more than i paint. Rendering is next on the list to try and master
Another fantastic video. Very informative, down to earth and not bursting into music every 2 seconds like every other channel on RUclips. Loving them! Keep up the great work and Thank you!
Cheers Richard. I feel it could of been better but I'm doing what I can with the jos that I've currently got on and editing takes ages. Really appreciate nice comments like this though. Cheers mate 👍👍
@michaelrodgers7742 try and work with someone who understands your situation mate, dont commit yourself to all sorts of work because when your low on mood and energy last thing you will want to do is graft, start doing a couple days here an there if you can find it
I been laying bricks and blocks for years. Plastering as well. Watch this guy hes content is good and u can see he knows hes stuff. Im sort of right handed.. Ambidextrous so i alsi start on the left. Keep up the content.
Proper renderer shoulders there mate , years of hard work ! I used to work with a plasterer/ renderer who used to play rugby for Wales - same shoulders, although he could drag around site a 1 ton sack of plastering sand. !
Fantastic video Kirk really enjoying your channel I might try knocking up in my refina tub & leave the cement mixer at home on my next render job! keep the content coming 👌
I’ve recently come across your channel so now looking back as some of your previous vids. Great presentation, explanation and content on all vids I’ve watched so far 😀👍
Been watching your vids for a couple of weeks, finally subscribed, was thinking of getting a new mixer as my old one is knackered but I rarely use it and it’s a massive heavy thing to be loading / unloading and storing, space is a premium and I never thought of using a whisk to do a sand & cement mix, I didn’t think it would handle it but it looks like it does a great job, also the whole open / closed thing was interesting, I don’t do a lot with wet trades myself but occasionally I take on small renovation jobs and this has been a very handy video, thank you 👍
I'm just on a job were I've got flat render to do but with it being January was wondering if I should put some frost proofer an accelerator in my mix to make it set faster
Great Video. I must be really old and odd. 🤔 I was taught to have timber battens nailed onto the walls to screed the render of those for flat plumb finish, take battens off and then infill. Besides if wanting to lie down on the job... join a union. 😳🤣😂🙄
Is the top coat the same as base coat? I mean same 4 sand and 1 cement and water proofer? Thanks.. Might be rendering a breeze block garden wall if we get decent weather this year.
Superb buddy some great tips there. Top video. Hate the pink grip. HP12 holds the beads on lovely that’s what a normally use tight 4-6mm hp12. Good 24 hours to go off then apply 12-13 mm K1. Bricklayer to trade to appreciate your knowledge and tips thanks again.
Ots a pleasure mate thanks for the support on my channel. We also bed them on but sometimes we nip in the evening and bead up, we just found that pink grip is nice and easy, don't need to mix up and wash buckets out. Then we just got used to using it
The other thing about not scratching in lines is the scratch tends to pull apart along the line as it dries, but wavey scratch tends to to be more stable.
When I removed a cupboard in my bathroom a patch of old plaster have fallen off the wall so I need to patch it so could you give me some advice on the best way to do it with sand and cement over red bricks.
The “waterproofing additive” in a base coat on external render is counterintuitive. When internal tanking/damp proofing it makes sense. Are you simply using the waterproofing as a plasticiser ?
Great video, would you start from the right hand side and top to bottom. Im just trying to do this. What sort of float do you use> is it a sponge float?
Yes start from right if your right handed. And if you're trying to get a smooth finish then you need a polyurethane float. I'd recommend watching the video a few times and watching others from different channels mate. Everything I've mentioned in the video is vitally important and you can't miss any details out. Let me know how you get on mate
Kirk...what ratios are the sand and cement mixes...and do you scratch up for k.rend base costs...and metal lath on the above chipboard base board...Darby's over feather edges a must .m
Hi there Kirk. Ok - I have a question for you. I'm not a builder - just a fellow Brit (just turned 60) and have been living in Greece for over 25 years now. My question is - after having had my house built here in Greece - the builders that - covered the brickwork first with normal - sand and cement - added a plastisiser called - asbvestis. It's a thick white material that resembles yoghurt. Then the top white sand and white cement had the same plastisiser. You didn't use this - is it because the heat in Greece needs it due to contraction and expansion? Superb videos mate. You are a top guy. 👍
Great vid. I’m going to do my first rendering on a garden wall. The bricks aren’t like the ones in this vid as mine are really smooth face. Do I need to add anything to the wall to provide a key other than water?
Any reason for waterproofer in base coats instead of mortar admixture and then just waterproofer in a top coat for stucco? Just curious if you have ever tried it that way or maybe you have tried and had issues?
Hi, I suppose on big panels it may have the advantage of slowing the suction for screeding and floating. Didn’t know it could be used in base coats to be honest so will have to give it a try. Could it be a disadvantage tho for trapping any moisture in between the layers and causing any cracking and eventually blowing especially below DPC level where moisture can be pulled up from the ground? So many types of waterproofer out now to so would be good if you haven’t already done a vid on that one. I see you used integral waterproofed but there is also feb proof plus, sika proof, sika rendamix, Bostik free flo etc. Apologies if you have so but I have only just discovered your channel. Good vids by the way. Still not too sure about that Weber/ parex stuff tho. Seen some terrible jobs done with this stuff. I think thin coat system confuses people that they don’t need to fill out and line everything through for the beads and Margins etc. Very few houses are build straight enough to just bang the beads on and lay on as you know. Seems more of a blend it in and hope they don’t throw a level over it before they pay up kind of job.
As a time served plasterer & right handed you work from left to right ,what he calls a hand board is called a hawk & the 2 handheld rule is called a Darby not a rull
Exactly the same as below. Brilliant. Are you using a 4 : 1 mix on the top coat also? Have we got much longer to wait for part 2 of the plaster timing video? 🤣.
When sand and cement rendering each consecutive coat of render should be weaker in strength than the one it is going on top of .So for instance if the scratch coat is 3 sand to one cement then the next cost should be at least 4 sand to one cement.
I was just wondering if there was anything between a battery whisk and a mixer and then I saw this video but you don’t say anything about the mains driven whisk could you?
If you listen carefully I explain why you can't use mesh with sand and cement and I also explain when the mesh WILL be going in. Anyway what's wrong with a little crack? You've got one on your arse an your not complaining about that are ya? 😳😉👍
The joiner will be taking ZERO off that beam! Cement board will be fixed straight to it! If any planing was happening, it would be before you got near it with render .
Hi mate, I was just wondering, with up to 4” thickness of render in places + Krend (base coat + top coat) would you recommend screwing sheets of E.M.L to the brickwork first ?
It's a good shout and in hindsight I could of done that in the bad areas. Remember though that unless you put eml in each coat it's only supporting the first half an inch scratch coat and after that your back to square one again. Could be something to consider before we topcoat that wall though mate so thankyou 🙂👍
Don't you use lime in the rendering mix ? I've been plastering for 40 years and always use lime in a sand cement render 1x1x4 scratch coat 1x1x5 top coat But a nice video feel for you with the sxxt sand
hi kirk, i like youre vids , but im going to point out , i work left to right , right handed, in the trade coming up to 50 years this is my point that was pathetic how you tried to explain right to left, of course there are no rules how anything is applied, handy hints are great, and will stand by my pathetic comment, i really mean i like youre work ,all the best from alister

I love the Brit accent. Great video mate. You are the king of render.
Really good, much better than that all talk and no do plasterer from Leeds!
Another great video . Cheers for you time.
Thank you! Cheers!
Mega video that mate, really informative. Thanks for taking time to show us.👍🏼
Top bloke love watching your videos 👍keep them coming
Glad you like them!
can’t beat the theory behind rendering, it’s paramount for a good job! you should do the krend follow up tutorial!
Noted!
Hi kirk do you do much rendering sand & cement or is it mostly k rend you do..
Enjoying your videos
It's a bit of both really, seems to be getting more and more k-rend jobs though to be honest
I havent plastered in ten years due to bipolar i hope to get back into it this year but its a struggle any tips for me kirk

Thanks Kirk!

great video man
Too video as always
thanks so much for your feedback ! would you recommend using an ox speedskim if you were a novice plasterer ?
It won't do any harm aslong as you still hit it with the trowel 3 or 4 times mate

The waterproofer stops the moisture being tucked out by the scratchcoat so you have plenty of time to work with the topcoat before it's dries out

U ever used hp12 over a sand and cement scratch/dubbing out coat? If so did it dry out ok? 👍🏻
I used to ask for a strong tea, leave bag in. Id always smile at them when they'd reply tea bag in?
As a time served plasterer & right handed you work from left to right ,what he calls a hand board is called a hawk & the 2 handheld rule is called a Darby not a rull
Your correct on everything apart from the handboard... the handboard is a board that sits on you hand, a hawk is a bird of prey
What size is that mixing tub mate ?
Not sure were a lot of plasters in the u.k learned to plaster ,but a lefty starts right to left and the opposite for right handed 👍
im right handed and i work left to right, there are no rules , i just like the way i do it , cheers from alister
It's right to left for a right hand when rendering and left to right for plastering. Plastering and rendering are two different things
Expansion beads along the way b4 k-rending mate?Great video by the way
We gave up using sand/cement render and use GP mortar instead, much easier and makes a nicer job.
