Tip when mixing ,add the lime to the sand first,
It breaks the lime up quickly and reduces the time it’s in powder form which you’ll know is not pleasant to breathe in.

Really enjoying this series and your channel mate. I've got too use to just doing internal work over the years and therefore are lacking confidence in external. I really need to get stuck into some sand and cement next year when the weather changes. It's be nice to hear about how you cope with the changes in weather like rain when rendering a house

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering

Thanks for the comment Ian. Tbh, being in the UK rendering in the summer is a lottery. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. We got caught out several times this year.
My suggestion would be book in a couple of weeks of skimming between renders (especially if they are complete houses, just so you have something you can fall back on incase you get rained off.
If you stack one render after another, if you get a rain delay it pushes all the other jobs on.
Also allow 25% extra on your time for these delays as they rarely run to the time scale you think. And include that in the price.
      Hope this helps.

Alex, you might want to try using quicklime. Quicklime expands 2.5 times after slake. A bag of quicklime is slightly cheaper than a bag of hydrated lime. But you get 2.5 times more lime. Also, it steams when you're mixing it in so it makes you look cool and it makes the mortar a little warm. In my opinion it makes the mortar a bit stickier, nicer to work with. It's not a massive difference, but the biggest difference is the cost. Cheers

How heavy are the bags of cement? What is the volume of the black buckets? I use 18litre buckets and 20kg bags. For scratch coat I do 2.5 buckets to a 20kg bag and about 1 litre bucket of hydrated lime per bucket of sand. For my top coat I use 2 buckets of sand per 20kg bag of cement and 2 scoops if Synlime (synthetic lime). I was always told to go richer in cement for each successive coat. I am in Canada and use this for parging, which is like a render on a wire mesh over foam for the basement portion of the house. What is your opinion on my mix? Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it!

As you do five plus the lime do you add more than the two buckets of water or does the lime make the difference.

Thanks for your comment. You will likely need more than 2 buckets of water in the mix unless the sand is already wet. Just start with that 2 buckets and add water as you mix to get the right consistency

I wish all builders knew that the render should be weaker than the substrate. Some of the internal render in my home is hard as diamonds. You can't knock it off without destroying the bricks. Hard means more brittle and soft means more flexible and less likely to crack with movement.

Now i have had an extension built i have nervously begun to plaster again. I am now looking to render the extension and noticed you said about the mix on light weight thermal blocks which my builder has used, what are my options as i am now aware the render could crack. thanks

You need to use a weaker gauge of render. 6 sand on the scratch, 7 on the top coat. And bed render mesh in the scratch coat.

Hello mate, quick question... I have decided to give my garden wall a go before I take on the back of my house to build a bit of confidence. As the wall is small (3x0.8m) and the weather is cold I was thinking of just using a slurry cost instead of render mix. Think that's a decent idea as render mix might be over the top?

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering

Slurry coat if the wall isn’t in great condition.

You don’t need a lot of sbr. Maybe 1/4 of what you put in for the waterproofer. I wouldn’t be looking to render this time of year. It’s too risky with the weather. March- October is the best time.

  • @omar-nj6wl
    @omar-nj6wl 3 года назад

Find your comments on waterproofer interesting ... Myself only use the bare minimum just enough to make the material workable excessive amounts make for a weaker finish never sets up as hard ! Test sometime yourself scratch coat a small panel somewhere to your usual method then do a small panel with less will require a little more mixing to get to a nice consistency for working leave them for a few days and you will see what I mean just try scratching either panel with a steel nail or something you'll see the panel with excessive waterproofer is much softer .. I am a plasterer have never mixed render with a drill myself I use a diesel mixer ... Have recently bought a DeWalt flexvolt paddle mixer tho just for knocking up skim can't wait to get it dirty 🙂 ! Where did you get the quick release for it? What brand is it ? Any link ?
