Getting started in plastering can be a rewarding venture, whether you consider it a professional career path or a DIY skill to enhance your home improvement capabilities.
1. Understand the Basics
Before starting plastering, it’s crucial to understand the basic principles and techniques. Plastering requires a keen eye for detail and precision in applying and smoothing the plaster. Familiarize yourself with different types of plaster, such as gypsum-based and cement-based plasters, and where each type is appropriately used.
2. Get the Right Tools
Invest in quality plastering tools. Essential tools for a beginner include a plastering trowel, hawk, mixing bucket, water brush, and a straight edge or featheredge. Good quality tools can make a significant difference in achieving a smooth finish.
3. Training and Courses
Consider taking a plastering course. Many colleges and private training centres across the UK offer plastering courses. These range from introductory sessions to more extensive NVQ or City and Guilds qualifications. Training under experienced instructors can dramatically speed up your learning curve.
4. Practice Makes Perfect
Start practising in a low-stakes environment. You could begin with a small room or a single wall in your home. Practising lets you get comfortable with the feel of the material and the tools.
5. Learn from Professionals
Watch and learn from professionals. Numerous online resources, including RUclips tutorials, provide step-by-step guides on plastering techniques. If possible, work alongside experienced plasterers to gain hands-on experience and valuable insights.
6. Compliance and Best Practices
Familiarize yourself with the building regulations and best practices in the UK. Understanding the standards for construction and finishing can ensure your work is beautiful and compliant with local laws.
Starting in plastering can be challenging but immensely satisfying. With the right tools, training, and a bit of practice, you'll be able to achieve professional-looking results and perhaps even turn your new skills into a fruitful career.

Roger is a great guy, we had a good laugh.
Was a pleasure to meet both Roger and Dylan 👌👍
Follow both of you, Had a go at plastering and I am completely S*** at it. Lol. Any more Heat Pump rants yet 😁😁
You're a nice guy mate I've subbed to your channel
@@bfgmarxzy853 thanks mate, good to have you on board 👍😃
Follow both of you, as a bricklayer i know that the wet trades are hardest to learn. Kudos to Kurt
Another follower of both channels. great work guys. You make it look easy...but that is years of practice for you - great tradesmen. I've got a small plastering job in Wrexham Kirk if you are at a loose end....? 🤣
Blown away by how humble Roger is. A man with all his experience, but not too proud to admit he’s not good at something and still so keen to learn from others. What a great guy.
God have us 1 mouth and 2 ears for a reason.
Brilliant video, Roger you two seem to hit it off right from the start.
I was glued to it right to the end.
Congratulations to all concerned.
Yeah, I thought the same.
Yup, he's a real good old boy. Old school. His SB vids are really informative.
Two of the nicest and best you tubers demonstrating their trades. Joy to watch
The mashup we were all waiting for. Two top tradeys, two top blokes.
As a multi trade, you know there’s always something to learn, even if you’ve been doing it for decades.
Generalists always have to learn more about specifics when doing a new job. Ppl who fail to learn won’t be any good.
I work in similar way but in a whole other profession.
I run 2 businesses one Plastering and one exterior cleaning and if it wasn’t for some of the pressure washing and window cleaning guys I wouldn’t have a clue
Nice to see people sharing the knowledge
I'm a retired/semi😂 plasterer of 50+years and this is a breath of fresh air to see a young one doing how it should be done👍
As an electrical worker this bloke must be the only plasterer ( in the country ) who doesn't fill the back boxes with plaster
That Kirk seems a nice chap. It's nice to know these people are still out there.
Thankyou 😊
Definitely
He has the knowledge and happy to pass it on which is rare nowadays
Rogers perfect comedic timing with dropping the plaster.
Ive been plastering 52 years. Thats how we were taught proper 😊
learnt more watching this video than watching about 20 others all together
I’m from over in Chicago and this plastering “geezer”is a top bloke 💪….love my fellow Brits, fantastic tradesmen
Thank you
Can't believe I've just spent 1 hour watching two blokes plastering a wall 🤦 I must get out more. Seriously though that was a bloody good video really enjoyable watch.
Absolutely brilliant video, so much skill, knowledge and experience on display. The mutual respect between Roger & Kirk was a joy to see. As a DIYer I have only "dabbled" in plastering, but I know it is one of the hardest trades out there, but these guys made it look easy. Great finish on both walls. Respect.
.......You two fellas are top people, I owe so much to you both. You inspire others and have great core values. Great to see you team up. Thanks to you both
Very nice comment, cheers mate
Roger's first dollop hitting the floor had me laughing. That is real life.
I worked for a building tool makers in Bradford, some plasterers would ask us to 'break in' their finishing floats, so we used a fine grit p120 linishing belt also slightly radiused the corners, then buffed to a fine polished surface on the buffing wheel which was also used for finishing foundry moulders trowels, they were impressed😎
Gaz Yorkshire.
Just a quick mention for the cameraman/ editor, brilliant job keeping up with Kirk and being in the right place at the right time!
I Ioved watching this video of two top blokes. Kirk is not only one of the best plasterers, he's one of the nicest blokes out there, so is roger.
Well done both 👏👏👏👏
True tradesman kirk. Taking care for follow on trade's. Cleaning electrical boxes and cleaning the bottom of the skim for the chippy. A lot of plasterers don't give a 5hit. Great job and great teacher
What an expert plasterer this guy is.
Great fun! Really liked the top of wall method- will adopt that. Rog's angle of attack is so steep that he gets the gear all over the floor- needs to sail closer to the wind! We usually run plaster up the bevel joints first to give the extra depth a chance to set up; Kirk doesnt seem bothered and no struggle to get it sweet. I like how he's not prescriptive though- he knows his stuff but not arrogant.
Hað one plaster do my house stairs, had to replace carpet, more on floor than wall. Need this guy next house amazing view. Amazing. 2 Plaster gods, Roger is a humble, great guy. Love it.
So good to see Kirk on the channel, legend!
Not that I have a clue about plastering (apart from myself) but this guy comes across as the master.
What fun to watch…this guy knows his stuff!
watched the whole video without skipping.....good job you two
Great video Roger. Many thanks to Kirk for sharing some of his trade secrets. I'll certainly be using some of the hints on my next plastering job. looks like you both had a great day. Well done.
Absolute Genius. I wish I had known this when I was an impoverished "first time buyer" forced into renovating my first home. Sir, you are the Master. Thank you and best wishes.
Roger & Kirk
Kirk is brilliant
Brilliant video. This has inspired me to have a go at skimming the walls in the kid's bedroom myself. Thanks gents, pleasure to watch you at work!
Have fun!
Great video. Once you have learnt the rules and mastered the craft, then you know how to break the rules, but in the right way. Trying to explain this to a beginner or novice is very difficult.
Plaster porn…love it! I’ve been seeing Kirk pop up on short video feeds and offering valuable tips, but had never seen anything of length. This is possibly the best plastering lesson I’ll ever watch, as the title suggests. Loads of little tips thoughtfully explained and justified. Great work Kirk (and ‘not bad’ from Roger).
It’s great to watch a master at his trade. A virtuoso performance.
Having to block the wife for trolling in his comments 😂😂😂😂 great video, lots of experience talking. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Omg can't believe I have just watched an hour of plastering brilliant
I love this lad. I also get the sense he could kill me with one punch.
you are not wrong but for all that he has an incredible warmth that also come across on camera 100% genuine
Henry Cooper was a left handed plasterer who used to work with his twin brother.
He said it kept him in shape for fights. Look what his left hook did to his opponents.😃
This was the duo we didn’t know we needed…….👏🏼
I've watched Kirk for a long time, always a happy guy with a great smile, I think anyone in the building
trade would love to work with him!!!
Great demonstration gents..thank you both
Almost no internet in plastering or building. However, watched 10 minutes of this and enjoyed it. I put that down to enjoying people who know what they're doing. Thumbs up, comment, and my thanks!
Noting that there are many ways to accomplish the same task and not 'the' way, helps a lot; continually re-adjusting what you do and not how you do it, leads to early-onset fatigue and rapid disillusionment in your work, particularly when you're a 'occasional user' of the trade as a general builder. It's also good to see demonstrated that items part art, part science.
That's the best plastering video I've seen since the SB plastering intro vid and b'fuck, I've watched a fair few!
Very many thanks, all.
Kirk is such a natural presenter.....great teaching video guys :-)
What proper likeable fella- brilliant instruction.
Cheers mate
I like Kirk, thinking man’s plasterer if there ever was one
I'll take that... cheers pal😊
@@Onthetrowel There's an expression used in a lot of trades... "Use your head to save your legs" (get everything you need out of the van / stores and to the work zone in one trip, don't go back and forth all day collecting this and that, then those...) No doubt you do that, since you've also, and quite brilliantly, explained "how to use your head to save your back" by "counting dips" at about 17 minutes in... The number of times I've been told that this that or the other bit of wasted time and effort "was only a few seconds"... But it's a few seconds times thousands of instances every year... 3 seconds x 1,000 = 50 minutes... and that would just be four instances of wasting three seconds per day at work...
We had an apprentice (not plastering ) on one site, to whom every day was day one... Site was remote from shops, but he arrived every day without his lunch, without a drink, and without his cigarettes... Never learned...
Just have to say wow. In the first few seconds you told us that you don’t know enough about plastering but are now going to learn from a pro.
RUclips is full of ”experts” and as a new home owner it’s sometimes hard to spot bad handymen and bad techniques. But you are one of the few i listen to and i like when ppl are humble and ready to learn more.
Thank you for showing the cleaning of the electrical sockets. Such a great detail. How many times I've been searching for completely filled up sockets, it's crazy...
This is going to sound pretentious AF, but watching Kirk is poetry in motion - like watching anyone who's really skilled with any kind of tool or equipment.
Been plastering on and off for six years now but listening to Kirk I learned so much more! Thanks mate for sharing skills. Trade legends format truly inspiring👍
Follow both of the lads. Brilliant video 🇮🇪
An honest plasterer and feking good at what he does
Absolutely brilliant Video by two top tradesmen. I’ve been a plasterer for 25 years , and I’ve still learned so much from watching this channel. I love learning new ways . Keep up the good work Kirk , love this channel.
Thanks mate
fantastic video! Kirk you are an ace teacher! Thank you!
Cheers mate
Absolute pleasure to watch two top tradesmen who encourage others.Thank yoy
i love @Onthetrowel already subscribed. Welcome to Skill Builder Kirk love your work.
Cheers mate, I quite like it over here.
As an old decorator I find it such a joy to see someone who really has a feel for their craft working.
An apprenticeship with a craftsman like this is the gold standard and all those little details. Fantastic, could watch this all day.
When I was decorating I saw all sorts of skimmed walls. Great video😊👍
Kirk is the muts nuts. “Plastering for beginners” is also an amazing plasterer/renderer.
This is a bright guy; mix that with his practical ability makes a great combination.
Well done for having a go Rog. Picking up new skills like this when you’re used to doing it another way for years isn’t easy.
Really enjoyed that, only problem could only give one thumbs up...
brilliant video, learnt a lot, thanks for sharing and great to see this collaboration between two legends!
I think this is one of the hardest jobs in the construction game. Much respect.
So much knowledge in that room . Im not a plasterer, never plastered but im subscribed to kurt and find it interesting and he comes across as a great bloke
Cheers mate
Top bloke. Great to see thankyou!
Kirk, a trowel master😎
Gaz Yorkshire.
Cheers Gaz
A great lesson in how to skim plaster, thanks mates.
Learnt so much thank you and such an enjoyable video with genuine lovely gents.
What a plasterer great to watch your technic is brilliant keep the videos coming
Kirk is brilliant! So generous to his viewers. Loved the dot n dab explanation.
Wow, I’m stressed looking at it , knowing the clock is ticking on the mix ..super skills
loads of time, we even stopped for some lunch
My Finnish Mashal town feather lite 18 inch l ve had over 40 years good as new non stainless American carbon steel' I paid 38 quid for it in the early eighties. Plastering fast and accurate is an art.
spent 50 years plastering and my wrists and forarms are now suffering
Dylan your good bro, well done. Roger thank you too bro.
Awesome, nice to have kirk on the channel. Learned something. It is somehow helpful to see how someone is getting on with without being their day job. You know, ok dan’t panic, it’s normal to struggle and learn while you go.
Highly informative. Highly entertaining.
Great video chaps, good to watch Kirk showing his skills.
🙌🏻
Great plasterer. Like his channel too when i have watched it.
Appreciate that mate thankyou
Been watching kirk for at least a year. Been watching you for even longer Rodger. What a team up. great to watch. Already watched kirks video on this. Both brilliant.
Kirk's a good bloke. Glad to see you guys together
Thank you very much for this very good lesson! And Roger seems like a really nice guy 👍
I'm a pretty good DIYer, though I do say so meself - tried plastering a few times, and it turned out lovely....like a cross between a dog's breakfast and a fire-damaged Picasso.
Huge respect to these gents of the trade - it really is an art and a skill combined.
Having watched this I might be tempted to have another go.
Or not.
Absolutely brilliant love watching these gents they are brilliant 👏
Brilliant to great tradesmen to watch never to old to learn something new
As someone who has realised plastering more than a patch just isn't a skill I can master I was going to skip this video, so glad a didn't, was a pleasure to watch the job done with care and skill by someone who takes pride in thier trade. Thank you.
This was brilliant well done lads
What a total master that guy is. Superb stuff.
Follow this guy such a great lad ,brilliant knowledge
Thanks alot for that and fantastic work chaps
2 of my fave youtubers. Brilliant episode. Thanks guys 🙌👍
Two great craftsmen. So much to it when it's been done properly. Great video boys. A word to Roger.. its inspirational that a man wish such a depth of knowledge and experience has the humility and patience to be taught to refine your skill. So many young lads without either. Again, inspirational. Respect from Ireland.
makes it looks so easy - FAB
Makes it look easy. It’s not…. Great seeing a skilled craftsman at work
Hes one of our own, hes one of our own, kirk Johnstone hes one of our own
Good job Rodger --- you are a great sport!
You boys are excellent communicators & teachers of your crafts.
Great to listen and grab experience
Just watched your plastering video with kirk. another great video. Every plasterer finds his own technique but learn from each other . Roger you did a great job plastering but what I like about you is how honest you are and kirk sounds like a good guy to work for /with . Anyone that wants to be a plasterer will learn a lot from Kirk. Look forward to you working with kirk again . I get more joy watching your videos than I do when I watch t.v. I'll be watching kirk on the trowel. Thanks a lot guys ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a great authentic video
Absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to mix another bucket on my test wall and try again.
Have fun! I need a practice wall too
Two of my favourite RUclipsrs great video
8:20 You couldn't have timed it better, great Video love Kirk's channel
Golden infomation
What a great video, I learned more in 1 hour of this video then 30 odd years on site of talking to plasterers 👏👏👏
Big up Kirk
