There's 1 thing that stops plasterers from progressing and there's one thing that's going to make you FAIL! That's what I'm going to cover in todays video.
This is the last part of the "Plasterers Crash Course" and it's probably the most important lesson you can learn in plastering. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but you need to know how to control your plaster.
This means that when you're plastering a wall you know what your doing. It means that you can stop the plaster from setting which means you'll get a nice, flat smooth finish with ease. That's what I want to teach you in todays video.

I can back that .been plastering 25 years and still can get caught out on odd occasions. Knowing your substrate is one of the biggest things in plastering you need to know and get right for an easy (er) life

You are the business!! I took the plunge on my first attempt on plasterboard after watching days of your videos and it went ok-ish with some minor imperfections. Then I attempted a hard wall with one coat 3:1 PVA- DISASTER!! All cracked and peeling and I couldn't understand why. So a thousand thanks for this!!! 👍👍😘

Love your content..how you verbalise your content. How you make it easier for people to understand. This is not how I make a living. But I love plastering as a welder/fitter it's similar you end up with something that's finished and completely transformed and usable again like plastering. Top videos. The collages could do with a tradesmen like your self that's able to translate your trade from paper to actual content. Super videos my best friend gave me the ability to plaster. You gave me the ox speedskim 🍻🏴👏

Blaine as always seem to have come across this you tube video too late , i pva the wall neat and than plastered it with 2 coats however it would seem i didn't control the suction to well as now that its dried it has a few hairline cracks in it , what my best course of action fill or scrape off and do again. thanks

I'm about to brick and breeze a door up. Got the hard wall plaster to go over the breeze blocks. Once done it will be covered with kitchen units, so do I need to apply multi finish over the hard wall.

This was a Refina fine Sponge Float which I usually use for Rendering. But the Refina Medium Sponge Floats are the best for situations like this 👍

Would you ever wet the wall down before putting your topcoat on instead of pva(ing) it? When plastering on top of hardwall or sand and cement or even bonding?

2x coats of 3:1 then coat of 2:1 was what I was taught years ago….then start skimming when pva is tacky not wet. Never had any issues.

What would I do if the first Finnish coat dried before the second coat. Would I need to pva again
So if you have different types of substrate and you want to plaster over the whole lot with the same mix of plaster, just make sure you seal it all in with two or more coats of pva mix first? The pva acts as a barrier between the substrate and the top coat? I’m glad you made this video. 👍
Exactly that mate - it reduces the rate of suction and gives the plaster a chance to cure 👍
I used my sponge float the other day for the first time in ages, maybe years. I had a ceiling going off on me a lot quicker than anticipated so I sponged it and got straight back on it flattening it. Not my finest hour but got the ceiling flat and finished fine. I won't go on a job without my sponge float now
Are you using pva sealer or pva glue?
Good lesson. I had to learn this by experience. Well explained bravo. But clean your trowel.
Might be useful to give some thoughts and advice around mist coats in terms of prep for decorating freshly plastered walls.

1 part paint to 4-5 parts water best base coat for new plaster. Apply 2-3 coats and it works it’s way into the new plaster pores. Roller applied or airless spray pot.
Screwfix - No Nonsense Bare Plaster Paint.... Amazing stuff! I haven't bothered mist costing in years now... Self taught plastering (with lots of help from you too Blaine) which I enjoy doing (mainly at home, but small jobs when my guys are busy)
The bare plaster paint is so thick & it goes against everything you've learned about the mist coat, but trust me it covers unbelievably!
I airless sprayed my mum's HSL once my plastering buddy's finished up & it was fully covered in 1 coat (as spray can apply heavier & smoother) but I did go on top with a finished paint that's more wipeable. It may be more expensive but you wouldn't get it from bare plaster to what looks like finished in 1 coat, no streaks / patches.. I hope they never stop selling it 😂
@@treenahally4358 I do a 50/50 mix of basic white emulsion and water. Two coats is usually enough.
I’m in the US and the products are so different-no gypsum-told not to use PVA just water - I did use it with gypsum plaster. The nuance of experience can’t be taught . I suppose I’ll make my mistakes . Great videos though
Great video but why don't you use SBR
So does bonding have a different suction rate than hardwall? If you just pva or Pregrit bonding agent any substrate before topcoat plaster, it should be fine? Is that a good rule of thumb?
Yeah, Bonding has a totally different rate of suction which is why the “wet PVA” test is handy to know. Bonding is a lot less porous and generally needs less PVA. But test it - when the PVA starts to sit on the surface and stops being absorbed then you’re good to go 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Marvellous! There is so much to learn and I’m loving it. I’ve still never mixed any plaster or had any on a trowel in my life but I’m doing my homework before I do. I’ve bought a load of gear but no idea. 😆 I’ll be fine, I just want to be a bit clued up before I commit to plastering my walls (and ceilings).
Why do you leave the floated wall for days before you skim it?
I've been plastering for 40 years and we always floated in the morning and skimmed in the afternoon.
Never failed.
I assume it was due to time constraints of filming

Good video mate.. In your last one you said you had to either remove the dot and dab or use a mesh over it. How come you didn't do either?

I’m just intrigued. It would be great to leave the screeds in knowing that they won’t crack so I’m just testing to see if you can.
But like I said in the last video, do it right! If it cracks then it’s in my garage and I don’t mind. It a ordina personal experiment! I’ll keep you all informed on the results 👍

love the vids but why dont you just use febond blue grit or Bostik Cementone Plasterers Stabilising Primer (Bostik Cementone Plasterers Stabilising Primer this one is much better in my opinion)

I fail because I am a complete numpty at putting up plaster lol. One skill I've never been able to get to grips with. My attempts look like Ive used polyfiller lol.
Top coat should always be thinner bro otherwise it’s too wet and u will end up with bubbles and poor finish if your not careful
Very true for an overskim…but with Hardwall the first coat seals so fast which eliminates the air trapping between coats which creates the bubbles.
But very true in every other situation.
Why not just spray the base coat with water before you start, its a lot cheaper than PVA

Ha well spotted! It’s my garage so I’m running a little experiment. I want to see if the screeds crack over time…since it’s not timber and they’re beeded on the same substrate I want to see what happens.

@Plastering For Beginners back in the day would have used sand n cement on any hard wall ,would have put my screeds on day before out of the same...then next day same process as you, as the screeds are made from same materials there should be no cracking 😉as for the plasterboard ones,if its bedded with board adhesive should be good to go as long as you got 3-4mm of top coat...retired now but watching your vids makes me wanna get my 25yr old marsheltown out...miss it

So any future damp issues and all the plaster will fall off when the PVA liquefies .

Sorry I’m confused…who mentioned Damp?? It’s not a damp wall. Gypsum plasters are the last thing to use in a damp situation. This is just a wall that’s been floated up on nice, dry blocks.
how your doing it is exactly the way I’ve always done it PVA internally SBR externally unless the walls have been tanked out👍

ok never ever let ur base coat dry,always skim it same day multi finish is a awfull product for dry backgrounds the old carlite finish was much better product u could skim the following day..
sponge float plastering is utterly superior to not sponging

It’s a comparison video showing the effects of a wall that’s not prepped correctly. A lot of beginners won’t know the repercussions and I’m hoping this will point it out.
The correct way is to actually Float and set the same day, (plaster Hardwall 3+hours later). No need for primer… The video to that is below if anyone is interested
