    One thing to bear in mind if you are attemptng this as a DIY'er. It's mega physical, you need the stamnina to keep pushing that render onto the blocks all day, then more still to work it and gert the finish. You can easily beforced to bail through fatigue or blisters if you're not used to this kind of work.

    Hi Roger,
    I live nearby in Surrey and the cheapest quote I could get for just front and back of a 4 bed detached was £9500. This included removing the old render but half of it was very good condition and the other half you could see the outline of breeze blocks on the 70's extension. I decided whatever I did would be an improvement so after seeing some Polish builders down the road going over some original render I thought I would give it a go. I used Tarmac ready mixed render and it cost me about £300. I put some pvu adhesive on the wall and then put 2 thin coats on just from my ladder. A year and a half later its still perfect with no cracks. I have seen better but I think it's at 95% and on a par with my next door neighbours. It's just a marvellous render but in lockdown I had to visit at least half a dozen Wickes's to get enough

    It looks as if some of those plasters have nobbled your sand to try and make you look bad, but you continue to help us novices to get better and that will do for me. A lot of these experts don't want anyone else to be able to do things and think the less people that can do something makes them more wanted, what is sad is that it doesn't work like that and they will never get better at doing things because they think they are too cleaver to learn anything.

Always use lime, who doesn't want creamy render lol! 5. I need to buy more tools woot! 6. Patience is a tool. 7. Rendering is hardworking but worth learning. 8. I have much to learn. 9. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, greatly appreciated.

    I always do a final steel trowelling for an polished or smooth effect, i love the finish and so do clients. However, I also do a final sponge float too... to make final finish, dependant on clients expectations. One thing I don't often do is applying 1 coat / scratch coat and then come back the next day or so for the final finish. I usually finish the wall or area in 1 day, do first coat and leave to firm up for few hours and then finish off with second coat thereafter. Never had an issue with it.
    Any way, I love plastering and rendering. So relaxing, check out smooth smiling walls/services. I felt like joining you rendering that wall there!!! Nice job...

    Hi Roger, As a keen DIY'er who has built extensions and various brick and block garden buildings I took on some plastering and rendering a few years ago. Although I ended up with a finish I was proud of, like you I had the plastering Mafia whingeing on about technique, at it put me off doing it myself for a while. Well just seen the results of same plasters work in a mates lounge, and whilst it is mirror finish... it ain't flat! So came to your RUclips video as I was pricing up plastering sand for someone to come and render my summer house that I had built, (been to hot to render over summer) and you have inspired me to get back out and do it myself. Thanks for the informative video and giving me back the confidence to do it myself.

On a closing note, I also apply render the way you showed in the beginning , it’s just easier on the wrist. Once I get to wrist height, then I flip to the other method of applying it. Great video. Awesome video. I learned a lot from you. I am not a renderer per se but I do a lot of what we call parging and some stucco here in Canada. No formal training (there isn't any) just winging it. I find if I work from the top down I can get a more even coat on the surface because at the end of my stroke the thickness is the same as at the start. Perhaps there is a reason why I shouldn't be doing it this way. Also what is this TBS or something that you mentioned for bonding?

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  6 лет назад +4

      Thanks. I am glad it helped. I know it is not the way most plasterers work and I am happy to adapt and work from the top down but I have seen plasterers in American who fill in the perimeter and then work across so who knows. As you say no formal training just pick it up from watching others. The bonding agent is SBR. If you use that it will stay on even if there is no key.

    I've been doing a bunch of stucco lately although I have very little experience. I've found the quickest, easiest way to get the stuff on the wall is load up the hawk and use it to apply the stuff to the wall. Kind of works like a go-devil. Saves a step and you can do more material than with a trowel. Really sped up my process.

    Looks good to me! I have seen a lot worse done by so called pro's on our sites. If its flat with no hollows its a win! keep up the great videos!

      Thanks Mike
      I know I am not going to earn a living at it, and frankly, have no desire to but, like you, I have seen some terrible rendering jobs and I don't know anyone I can trust to do it properly. Sure they get it on at the speed of light but tap it a few weeks later and it iis blown. The whole house took Jay and me a week so I am not unhappy..

    • @mikep7146
      @mikep7146 6 лет назад +6

      To do all that in a week with two blokes is good going as far as i'm concerned! You should be proud that you take pride in your work. Yeah the trowel dogs can slap it on quicker than us general builders but very few these days take the time to even out the hollows with a straight edge. They float it flat and move straight to rubbing up and sponging. So like you say in direct sunlight it looks rubbish. Keep up the great videos lads!

    In the winter time put the waterproofer in the top coat if it was put in scratch coat it would take to long to dry out. Only put the waterproof in the scratch coat when it gets warmer weather.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  6 лет назад +1

      I am not a fan of waterproofer. It traps moisture in the wall. I have been told by the cement manufacturers that is does more harm than good.

      Just the question i wanted to ask you Rodger about using modern waterproofers, i find they weaken the render. Lime is great look at what still stands from Roman times.

    Good video. I'm an amateur but have done some rendering and plastering and learned a lot from this. Got a swimming pool to do for friends so this is very helpful. Great camera work, whoever it was

    Keep up the videos. It’s a great help and I think they’re really good.
    Ignore the muppets who are precious over sticking stuff on a wall.
    They clearly need to feel special when the jobs actually aren’t that hard. :)

    Good job that .....good points about putting curves in scratch coat .......cracks can’t really follow curves but will form on the straight lines and lime in the mix brilliant

    Found this both interesting and funny, but missed a heart beat when I saw the lad (who looked like he'd been scolded or was waiting for the bus lol) in the background step up and seat on the safety scaffolding (see: 8:40)

  • @diddywright6165

    Get it on, get it done, don't matter if you do it left handed back to front with your arm between your legs as long as it's on the wall and the finish is good! Nice one Roger! Are you sure that was plastering sand and not ballast?!!!! No appearance of the powder puff either?!

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  6 лет назад +1

      I love that powder puff but it got left in the mix and set rock hard. Time to get another one.
