@@FlappyBellyIm a professional painter and this guy has made some really good points...but also doesn't address some important things... Hey Pearson, who is a professional painter can paint really quickly and straight without any tape... A regular diyer can save themselves a lot of time by taping...I never tape ceiling or door frames but taping The scene between the trim and the wall has more purposes than just creating a straight line (which I suggest getting a sharp edges technology tape. It will help you create a nice straight line even if you're not a professional painter and also save you a lot of time, particularly on your second coat) But the other thing that's almost just as important... In which he doesn't show in this video at all... Is that if you paint up and down with a 9" roller (or any size roller) They create little paint. Splatters from the paint coming off the roller as it rolls up and down... When the roller is at, its most wet from just dipping is when this happens the most... If you're not wearing long sleeves, you can sometimes feel it hit your arms ... Now these aren't big fat drips. These are little specks that are barely perceivable with the naked eye But if you get up close to your white trim, you will have little specks of your wall paint all over your trim if you didn't put some tape in between your trim and the wall... That said, that's the only part that I would advise regular homeowners and even professional painters to tape
My dad never taught me a thing despite being a great craftsman, the booze came first, Im blessed to be born at a time where I can watch and learn from guys like you, thanks man. Shane from Ireland
yes!!!! I thank God for so many people who are on here showing their skills to who ever that is interested!! most people now dont have family, parents or friends to show them how to do anything like a long long time ago! and God know this day would come where parents wouldnt be availble to show their kids anything for what ever reason! You Tube was created, this platform has blessed me so much!

Thanks to you, I have just about completed my first bedroom. I'm 70 never used a paint roller or sanded walls. We have a 120 yo home. The ceiling has not been touched by us , 35 year owners. Due to health problems, I got a painter in to do this. I used a sealer on the woodwork and it looks awesome. No paint on the carpet either! So this year, I've conquered the roller, sprayer, and caulking. Thanks to you. I'm so pleased I could be bothered to try. I've also sanded french doors stained and varnished, reglazed them and hung them back up again with new hardware Inc hinges. I'm on a roll!
Feels good to be retired and have something to do other than watch tv I bet. I’ll either die before 70 or be too poor to retire. Or be too broken down to do the handy projects.
I'm a retired painting contractor with 50 years experience. You without a doubt give the best painting tips on RUclips. Haven't seen one yet that I disagree with ...... although I might have put tape over the top of the baseboard to avoid those pesky little dots coming off the roller when the wall is a darker color. ;-)
Came here to say much of the same. One more tip, when you have a brand new roller cover you can wrap it in a layer of tape and then pull it off to get loose fibers off before first use.
Have a bucket with warm water and rag nearby to instantly wipe any small error. After sanding, run your dry hand across the wall, if there is dust from sanding wipe the walls clean. Use a mildly sticky roller on your paint roller to remove loose fibers before using it to paint @ 15:49 he removes some fibers from the wall. Before you start cutting in with the brush, load up your roller and leave it in the paint tray (not in the paint area) and place the tray in a 13-gallon garbage bag (so it doesn't start to dry out), this preps the roller & gives time for the paint to soak in.
I want to paint a bedroom for first time and I watched painting for beginners and it amazed me on different things that painters that painted my house did not do the things I watched you do. Now I need to get started.
Hi! I’m an auto body student and i watch his videos too but something else I learned from painting cars and walls too, try to put on a thin coat first then put on a thicker coat after the first coat. Also sand your walls in case you didn’t know, so you don’t have the gritty texture as he said in the previous video. Last thing is start with the edges and do what I call reversible clothing inside out! Hope I can help!
I’m actually a 13 year old who is planning to start a painting business in a few years! Your videos are very helpful considering I’m trying to learn the basics now before I take an education on it or get more advanced. Thank you 🙏
@@seapeoplesdidnothingwrong1307 Not at all a good idea. The toxic fumes you breathe in are not worth sacrificing your health. Cancers and all kinds of breathing issues. Not good!
I've painted my entire house (walls, ceiling) and your videos were what gave me the confidence to do it! Not to mention learning that DIY stuff doesn't have to be this daunting, weird thing. Appreciate your content!
This DIY tutorial on painting a room is an absolute must-watch for beginners. It has a clear instructions, from choosing the right paint and tools to mastering the techniques, turned what I thought was a complex project into a straightforward, satisfying DIY endeavor. I couldn't be happier with the results.
This is a lifesaver for someone like me who had never painted before. The step-by-step instructions were incredibly clear and made the process feel manageable even for a novice. I'm now confident I can tackle my painting projects with ease, all thanks to this helpful tutorial.
My husband and I watched this videos before painting the whole downstairs of our home with 20 ft ceilings we brought all products recommended. Our home look as if it was painted by professionals!!!! Our cut work is spectacular. I promise you if you do everything as explained you’ll never need a professional to paint your home again. THE CUT WORK ❤️🔥😍🥰 You saved us about $1800 which is the cheapest estimate we got from contractors. THANKS!!!
I once paid 5k to have my home painted. After doing the laundry room myself recently, I decided I got screwed lol I didn’t see this video before the laundry room and messed up a few times but I can see how it would be much easier now after seeing this. I was so glad I saw your post because I’ve got super high ceilings too and it made me wonder if I could do the whole house myself.
I've painted my whole house like a pro and it's all thanks to you. You taught me everything worth knowing when it comes to painting like a pro. When people ask how I knew what I was doing, I say uncle Jeff taught me! 😅
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY help I just bought paint started painting the outside of my house. When it dried stains started to appear like water spots and lines.🤔
I am a 15 year professional painter. I completely endorse this video. Great advice. But the truth is most homeowners just don't have the patience to do this. Some do. I've seen fantastic homeowner paint work and absolute disaster. I'd say the wet edge that you mentioned is one of the most important details you addressed. Rolling somewhat "quickly" helps the wet edge so it all drys uniformly. Another pro tip is try to finish each roll stroke from top to bottom so all the stipple matches. Also the lower the sheen the better the hide on imperfections or any high or low spots on the sheetrock seems. Love your videos. Well done
That is what I was thinking too. I'm a contractor and we don't usually sub out out interior painting. I don't know that I would suggest these techniques to DIY homeowners - it takes many hours of practice to cut in by hand like this. I still advise my DIY clients to tape+caulk most cut-in lines, especially between two high-contrast colors. Yeah, it takes more time but they are not on the clock - they will get sharper lines than hand cutting IMO
You are not creating dust after sanding; the sanding is just to remove imperfections. I would advise against wiping even with a soft cloth, because the paint has to cure. Just use a clean sanding pad.
@@paintpaintpaintco.6039 yes he is, and his ceiling cut looks like shit. Where he stops and leans on wall to talk about ordinance you can see a horrible line right above his head. Baseboard looked very poor as well right from the start. Taping….DIY’ers, dont listen tk ppl who tell you not to tape. Tape is not expensive, is easy to apply and will save you many headaches all while giving you ruler straight lines. Use Frogtape in blue or green. Its $7-9 a roll and has gel lock technology.
My late Dad was a master carpenter (built homes). I remember when he used to take me to see his work. In addition, he painted flawlessly like this. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾
THANK YOU. I decided to repaint my entire (new/first) house recently. I’d never even painted a single wall before and I’m 39. I’m about 1/4 of the way done with my massive project. Wanted to make sure ya knew just how damn helpful (all of) your videos are. Thanks!!
I started painting professionally only a year ago with a old school European painters guild Scotsmen, and everything you said was everything I have learned from him so far. Spot on advice to anyone starting out!
Just want you to know how much this video helped me, i started painting a couple of years ago when i found the house i wanted to rent the landlord had a leg injury and asked me if i would paint the house to cover the rent so of course was all in, I found out i have a good steady hand and was decent but had no idea of the fundamentals of being a real painter, ive painted over 14 houses for him now and have been struggling to find a good technique, he does have a pro painter-contractor on the job that i would love to learn from but i think he thought i was trying to take his work so he provided very little insight, so one day i look too ole youtube and find you and now im 10 times faster, the thing holding me back was that i was so slow it took me forever to paint a whole house, these tips have changed my world, tips like use the paint inside the brush, using hot mud to prevent flashing and quicker dry times, after this video i bought a hawk and a good brush and got a job done in a week that would have taken me months before, so thank you for the tips i could not find anywhere else.
Thank you so much for your "how to" interior painting videos. My husband passed 8 years ago, and this is the first time I've tackled painting alone. Your videos made it easy but, better yet, took away the stress I was feeling about diving in. I just have to say that 8-in-one painter's tool is a little bit of magic, along with adding the extension stick to the roller. I was just going to repaint the living room, but now I feel confident to refresh all the rooms.
That's awesome, and I definitely think that refreshing the whole house will make you feel better about your home and your life! Sorry for your loss, but I think you're amazing for tackling these projects by yourself. Good luck my friend!! 😊
I just lost my husband, too. Now I am going to learn how to do these home repair projects he always said he’d do, but never did. If it’s to be, it’s up to me! Let’s do this! 💪🏻
Holy mackerel! Wife and I painted our living room and hallway recently and just about everything you said NOT to do, we did 😂. We’re doing the kitchen next and we will do it right this time. Thanks!
Just finished a room the other day! I used a lot of your information from removing wallpaper, to patching holes, to laying on new paint! Thank you so much! You gave me the confidence to do it!
Jeff - I SO OWE YOU! 10 days ago I painted my Closet-To-Voiceover Room conversion project w/ 2 coats of primer (over new plaster). Today, I laid down my first color coat. I have never felt so satisfied and accomplished as I do right now. The sanding step ( never did this step until this project) and 2nd color coat have yet to be applied. AND MY ARMS & BACK FEEL GREAT (that’s a first)! I have been amateur / DYI painting our homes for 35 years. I got pretty good at taping rooms over that time. That said, I HATE taping, the time it takes, the removal process, and (even with Frog Tape) my still not superior results. This is the first time I have ditched the tape and tried to freehand cut my edges lines. Learning curve for sure, but already I’m getting as good if not better results. Likewise, we have always used either bargain or mid-range priced paint. We went higher end this time. That change, with breaking free from the tyrant of the “W-Method” (that I had been told for years was THE way to make a DIY job look good) has made a paradigm shift in my results and my enjoyment! Tomorrow is sanding and second coat. I would normally be looking for an excuse to “let the paint cure a little longer.” As it stands, I can’t get to sleep and I’m fighting the urge to go check my room again! Your videos, tips, expert advice that is easy to understand and follow, have been a game changer! God bless you, Guy!!!
I'm just starting off on fixing up my 1962 little house. I'm starting with painting the bedrooms and am excited to start. I have prepped the first room as you showed. Since I just turned 64 my confidence is a little sketchy but I am motivated. Soon I'll be a retired nurse and will have more time to DIY everything. Your attention to detail and teaching style is beautiful! Thanks so much!
I'm a newly minted retired nurse too. Congratulations on your career and enjoy your renovations. I am currently repainting all the interior walls of my house and followed this fellow's video to a tee and was disappointed in the finish. I chose a Velvet paint over an eggshell, so im not sure if this made a difference. My walls had a "stripey" finish which was especially noticeable on the walls with the most sun exposure I.e. my whole living room. My elderly father was a contractor and according to him, has painted thousands of walls and I should have asked him for his tips and tricks first, but I turned to youtube and this video and i noticed your "nurse" comment at that time. I've re-done my paint job with my Dad's advice and I'm so happy with the results. ( I had to completely and thoroughly sand and prime the walls as the stripey finish would have haunted every layer of paint) The only tips I'm keeping from this video are how to cut in the ceiling and around the trim. I didn't need to tape off anything and only had to wipe up a couple of spots where I goofed and got a little paint on the trim. My Dad's advice: Wash, patch and sand areas if needed. Put a light coat of primer over the spackled areas. Lightly sand the walls with ~150 grit sandpaper and wipe down with a clean microfiber mop head. Prime the walls with primer ...very important step and don't skip it according to my Dad Lightly Sand between all coats of paint with 180 to 220 grit paper and wipe away the dust again with the clean microfiber mop. I know this fellow in the video says wiping after sanding not needed ever but why get dust and such stuck in your paint finish. Divide the wall length horizontally in 3 sections and about 4 feet vertically. Apply paint with a 6mm to 10 mm roller ( the video says 18 mm but this gives a thick heavy textured look that i didnt like and the smaller pile roller gives a smoother finish) In the ~3x4 foot sections going from the ceiling to the floor, Apply the paint in a M then roll over this M horizontally in a zip zag motion Do this to the other 2 sections below your first section. Once all three areas are done now lightly roll in one direction from the ceiling to the floor covering your last roller mark a few inches. Work quickly. Now start on the next 4 foot piece of wall and repeat. Honestly, I actually used less paint with this technique and the painting of the wall went quicker then the video's techniques and best of all...No stripes in the finish! Hope this unsolicited advice helps you avoid the costly time and money mistakes I made this week. Best of luck in your retirement and your painting. 💗
I appreciate your straightforwardness and getting to the point without a lot of unnecessary fluff. I’m a man. Just tell me what I need to know. That’s what you do. Thanks, brother.
Notes! Remove cover plates Dust and sand wall Open and mix paint Angle brush to quarter inch away from edges until loaded with paint (let it fan out) Gradually sneak up on edge to cut Paint all edges, including under cover plates (about 4”) Wash angle brush immediately Pour paint into liner and load up roller brush Start very gently, go over uneven areas, stretch out paint Cling to wet edge, keep lead edge wet, no breaks! Pull out lint and back-roll, consistent texture Never change direction (always vertical!) short rolls when necessary Give at least an hour Sand the wall again Load up angle brush, and wipe post of paint off, use less this time Precision cut all edges on wall Roller the wall for second coat (don’t move on to other wall), lighter layer Clean paint out of roller sleeve (throw away roller sleeve?) Don’t hang anything on wall for 48 hours or so, and wait 30 days before washing
One of the few videos that showed how to properly paint. Worked as a union painter for three years and these were the methods they taught in the union schools. EXCELLENT.
I learned so much from this. It was over 30 years since I painted a wall and now I am 3 rooms done and my technique has improoved so much. Right gear, right paint and right technique - doesn't make it easy bu tdoes make it easier and a better quality finish.
Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. First time painting interior and I don’t have a clue what I am doing. I ‘ve stopped taking advice from Home Depot because they don’t know what they’re talking about. I don’t know what I would do without your videos. They are so helpful. I love painting. Being in the remodeling business for 30 plus years, painting is my favorite part of the whole process. The job is all downhill when you get to finish and painting. Easy work, relaxing, and rewarding!
This saved us from the frustration of uneven edges. Thanks SO much, walls look great now, and I have a new respect for pricier paint. Don't skimp on cheap paint and tools was my biggest lesson!
Thanks for this info!!! I am a woman that doesn’t mind doing her own painting etc. I’m currently painting at home and I went and bought the exact same roller extender you have and it is very nice and worth buying and it is awesome when painting. Makes it so much easier when painting.
I painted my 120 year old house inside and out and learned some of this stuff the hard way but learned more Today watching this! so thank you so much !! I now feel validated 😅 by your sanding tip. When I-was sanding the outside of my house people would stop by and tell me it wasn’t necessary but i could tell it made it a difference . It was a lot of work sanding but worth it
@@HexNebula I’m not sure. We have a husky and I have a rigid and and even our smaller makita and dewalt do just fine. I would do a shop vac, something without a bag that wouldn’t get affected by the dust.

You’re the real deal and we’re fortunate to have you.
This deserves every bit of praise. Really unfussy and clear advice that really does help a lot. The best lesson in this video is to take your time with it.
I love the fact that you expressed your hate for tape right away. Most people dont even know how tape works anyway and they let it bleed through. Great Video bossman.
I am by no means a pro, but figured out early on that tape caused more problems than it prevented. If you don't rush, you can get the hang of cutting in without tape.
@@ELthatsLoreel Like anything, you get better with practice. Tape drove me crazy. It caused me more problems by ripping off paint when I ripped it off, or as others said, paint bled through in parts anyway. When I make a mistake, I just wipe it off with a wet sponge or cloth and do it again. I also will sometimes use an old credit card and hold it perpendicular to the wall instead of taping, and move it along as I paint. (I only do this if a particular area is causing me trouble. ) You cannot rush this or do too much in one day or you get sloppy and tired. You can also hold the bristles and paint down first, then across to remove those downward brush strokes.
Great video and expert tips. Another tip is the importance of adequate LIGHT. So many homes are poorly lit. I always use a couple cheap clip lights for painting so you can really see what you’re doing.
I'm about to paint a room for the first time, video was super helpful! You have a ton of experience and do a great job at showing and describing what you're doing! Keep up the great work, I'm sure this has helped thousands and will help thousands more!
Man yall are dumb, pay this half price. He never does the touch up and a cut is just lazy. I only do that to maximize money, but u wouldn't do that in my house
I know this is two years old, but this video saved my life with one sentence: "None of this W rubbish" . I was getting so anxious about starting to paint my house myself because everyone i spoke to said I need to paint in a W or M!! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much 🎉❤ watching from Ireland. My Dad and partner advised me strongly against painting our house, I'm halfway through and wow it's a total workout ! But omg it looks amazing, the difference painting a room makes is huge. Did our Kitchen, TV room and hallway. They love it too 😅 Your videos helped me through. I'm getting better each day 🙌
I showed up to work one night. Super dead. I was offered some cans of paint and 8 hours to paint some walls. I showed up the next day to being thanked and praised for my work. I have been holding onto that warm feeling and I can’t deny I loved every second of painting. I’m currently learning the basics and helping my family members paint their homes. My mother in law is in real estate and we already discussed when I’m ready we will go into business together. All it takes is one night to give you a dream.
That’s awesome, a great entry into the business. I would definitely start taking customers and do interior work, especially seeing as you have someone who can get you clients.
Thank you, man. I served 8 yrs in the Navy, and we did a lot of painting the ship. I thought I knew how to paint until I watched this video. It really opened my eyes. I watched because one of my neighbors asked me to paint one of her rooms. I’m so glad I watched this video. Thanks once again!
Followed your guidance to the letter to paint my living room this week, the results were amazing. In particular the 360 degree sander, magnetic paint brush pots, sanding between coats and most of all first time I’ve used the extender poll for the roller [I forgot to buy the stand which I’ll do next time] which was a game changer for me ! Also, after the first coat / edging cutting in I did a wall at a time so for the second coat, edging one wall then rollering it which gave excellent results. We think it’s the best paint job we’ve ever done plus we saved $1,800 in labour costs. Thanks again Cheers Declan - Brisbane, Australia.
I’ve been a GC for over 30 years, and I absolutely hate painting myself, but I have watched and heard all this from my best painting subcontractors throughout the years. God bless you for boiling it all down to tips for the homeowner and DIYer.
Thank you so much for this video (videos) you motivated me to start a little side hustle. With this very video i just made my first $1,150 profit painting a house. I use the exact same material you did except the 360 sander they didn’t have it a The Home Depot at the moment. 150 on supply and the rest was profit. Thank you so much. Planning to do my little business watching your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH
I've painted more rooms than I can remember in my 68 years... and that's the first time I've seen what the curve on the 5:1 tool is for! 🤣 Finally I can get some of that paint back out of the rollers!
Your video (as well as a couple of others) gave me the confidence to paint my new home. I sanded, patched, and painted two coats. Sherwin Williams emerald. And it came out beautifully. Straight laser lines. It was a ton of work. But I got it done. And I thank you.
I have to tell you this. I was sitting at work with no customers whatsoever and found your channel. I recently had a quote to paint my home. I was so shocked at the price, respecting the professional work of a painter though at the same time. I watched this video and even though I have painted myself for years and years, I thought the time had come to ask someone else to do it. I am not young and the task was going to be daunting to say the least. I began last week in the hall. I cannot tell you how this video has changed my feelings about painting. I have never used a pole and that's why I hated the thought of re-painting any room. Well, what a transformation!!!!!! I cannot honestly believe how easy it was to do. I followed all your instructions and did it slowly and calmly. I am so impressed with you and myself! Thank you so very much for doing these videos. I bought a good quality paint and roller and didn't use any tape. The paint glided on like cream. I have now moved on to paint part of the lounge and the kitchen. Little by little it will all be done. 😄 Don't know if I can do the ceilings though!!
I’ve watched the paint like a pro 3 times. It’s my paint bible but I love seeing this quick and to the point version! I am painting a rental unit and this drives all the very important parts home in a concise manner. Thank you!
Sounds like an absolute waste of time, I’d personally advise sanding before if needed and I know I’m no pro but I’ve done a lot painting over the last 15 years I can’t say I’ve ever experienced a sandpaper like finish he describes in this video, the biggest reason it sounds like a waste of time however is because who the hell is feeling up their walls 😂 as long as you’re happy with how it looks I’d seriously recommend spending your time on anything else instead
I wiped all my walls before I painted them by I didn’t think to sand them. They have two coats but I have plenty of extra paint would it be worthwhile to slightly sand it by hand and do one more coat? It’s my finished basement and it looks fine there’s some grip but you have to get up really close to see it. Also I have a 5 gallon bucket so it was hard to precisely pour only what I needed. So I’ve had the excess pain sitting in the roller contained under a plastic bag and little chunks started to dry. What should I do get rid of it?
I watched your original A-Z painting video, and although we have always painted our own house I finally paint and especially edge without taping! I tell everyone about your channel! Thank you! Cheers!
These tips are awesome! I watched the old “Paint like a Pro” videos, repainted my house and started a side hustle during 2020 when everything shut down. I learn so much from these videos. It has been awesome watching this channel grow!!! Congrats and thank you!!
I've painted several of my own houses top to bottom and always hated doing it, turns out I had no idea what I was doing! Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Excellent video (as well as your other videos too). You give detail without belaboring points and I don't feel the need to fast-forward to get the information I need. Thank you.
You sir are an absolute legend. The girlfriend and I just bought ourselves our first home and we don't have a lot of money to get the pro's in to do the work. You have literally saved us a small fortune. This is the first video of yours that I have ever seen. Best like and subscribe I have given in a long while. Thanks again.
This was a fantastic video. I’ve never seen anyone explain technique so well. I feel like I’ve never painted properly before. I learned A LOT! Your teaching skills are top notch. Never boring and never confusing. Great camera work too. This was a really well made video. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I subscribed a few minutes into this!
Can I say thanks, I followed your advice in this video. I painted my kitchen/dining room based on what you said and it was a breeze, (even with everything in place), cutting in was less so, and in a couple of areas I can see where I cut in, maybe I let it dry longer, I’m not sure, but I can’t impress enough, how much you’ve helped! Buying a pole was a game changer, fantastic.
This is hands down the best paint tutorial on RUclips. I wish I knew before to cut and roll one wall at a time. I cut the whole room and then rolled the whole room separately. I had to do 4 coats.
So I just painted my room, following the video. A couple of obervations: - Clean the dust off the wall after sanding - USE PRIMER (i'm not sure if this is how its called). This layer of primer will make your paint stick and will allow the paint to be spread evenly. Otherwise its all gonna be a disaster. - Stir up the paint with a stick before pouring - Use good tools
Some paints don’t require primer or have primer in them. I just painted my new home in sherwin Williams emerald satin. No primer but applied two coats over the cheap flat white the builder used. I sanded and patched holes and other stuff. And the paint job came out beautifully. The most important part is rolling in the same direction and backrolling to even out the paint eliminate roller lines. The final job is beautiful, No lap lines nothing it looks professional. The only thing I’d add is to backroll the cut ins with a roller while the paint is still wet to change the texture and minimize brush lines.
@Belgee Thank you for the extra tips. Could you let us know which grit sandpaper did you use? Also, did you use microfiber rags to clean off the dust, or something else?
You are one remarkable teacher ! I know, after forty years. Great video, clear, articulate and with everything explained fully and with all the science, logic and common sense that goes with it too. Great job and finish at the end. Bravo , keep them coming please.
Great video. One thing I was surprised by is that there's no cleaning needed after sanding. Doesn't sanding dust cling to the wall and then affect the finish of the paint when it's rolled onto it?
I came here to ask this as well. In all the painting videos I haven't seen him clean after sanding, but maybe that's being done off camera? I just would love to see that addressed, and if I'm missing something.
They have microfiber dust catchers that can fit on top of that sanding disc that he's using in this video. You just wipe the walls down with it the same way they were sanded. The only dust left is that which isn't on the walls.
A fabulous video, so helpful. I have always been the most hopeless painter. I'm mid-way through re-painting my teen daughters' room and it's looking so professional. I'm mastering the edging and finally getting even strokes on the rolling. And not having to tape everything up is make life so much easier. Thank you so much. I feel comfortable now to tackle some of the more visible areas of the house that need repainting.
OMG! I am so glad I found your video! I am currently repainting my home for the 2nd time, boy am I glad I haven't gotten far! I will be buying this new paint! 😌 And starting fresh with all your great tips! I hope it's as easy as you make it look!! I have never heard of sanding in between coats, either!! 🤯 Thank you!!! 😊
In order to prevent the paint brush handle and steel band from getting messed up, try taping it with masking tape. At the end of the job remove the tape cos when it dries up it is a pain to remove. In that way your handle and steel band remains clean like new.
That helped alot. I've painted the hole outside of my house and built a bathroom from scratch in my basement. I still wanted to take a quick class on painting as I'm just about to finish the upstairs bathroom renovation. Appreciate all the content over the years given me so much confidence to do these projects myself and save thousands of dollars. (Plumbing into my foundation and electrical to my B Box I hired out)
Thanks so much for your awesome tips. I was so unhappy with how my walls felt after repainting them last year. The fix was so simple thanks to you. My walls now look and feel like I hired a pro.
This video came at the perfect time. I used this and your ceiling painting video to repaint my living room/dining/kitchen this week and it looks SO GOOD. Thanks for making painting easier and way less intimidating!
Not sure if I missed it or not but is any sort of cleaning or wipe down to be done after sanding before the first coat or after the second coat? If so, what's the best way to do it?
If you sand the wall before painting or in between, turn off the air conditioning. Fans etc also off. Wait an hour before you start sanding the wall so that the dust does not fly in the air. Use a lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe the dust. Do not wet the cloth. This is what I do myself, but I'm not a professional, so I don't know if it's the right way 😂
Between sanding I get a damp micro fiber cloth do a quick wipe down. Walls I hit quick, baseboards or quarter round I put a little more attention on because a lot of the dust can pile up down there
Just painted my first room ever and it looks great. Was easy on the back and arms since I got the products you recommended. Some clumsiness and accidental paint splotches here and there at first but my cutting in is improving with each attempt and the dread I had for doing the rest of my house has now turned to excitement. Thanks so much, Jeff!
This video is EXTREMELY HELPFUL! I want to paint my room and I have no clue how to do it lol, but after watching this video, I feel much more confident that I can achieve a good paint job with these tips, rewatching this video and knowing what materials I should be doing to make it less of a stressful process. Thank you so much and you have gained a new follower in me! :)
Thank you, while I had a little experience painting, I was much more confident repainting a bedroom with your guide. Buying the pole extension for the roller is a must. Same thing when cleaning the walls, use something with a handle so you can save your back.
Wow, Im pleasantly surprised by how informative it was. I appreciated the detailed explanations and demonstrations, which have given me the knowledge and motivation to transform my space with a fresh coat of paint.
Don’t start your rolling at the top of the wall, it’s harder to spread if you put to much on. Start in the middle with an upward motivation to prevent squeezing the paint onto the floor. An external corner I could definitely cut in but also roll out with a outward motion then rolled about 1cm from the corner up and down, wipe the corner of need be.
@@musheopeaus4125 you talk nonsense. here in europe we have other paint and you can buy the best paint for about 200 bucks per bucket and it still drips... Here we use emulsion paint or distemper paint. That in the video looks like varnish paint.
One of my favorite tools for cleaning dust/webs from walls, windows, cabinets is the Webster on a long pole. You can do an entire house in an hour. Mechanical advantage with that long pole.
Great video! I’m a home owner who does most of our maintenance and just getting started with small renovations. Great tips, cut and paint one wall at a time. I always do it the other way, cut in everything then paint everything…. For a beginner it’s hard to stay consistent with such an overwhelming task. One wall at a time, breaks that up and give you good start and stop points. Hopefully all that came out right. lol Also, LOVE that paint rig!
I hope you're still reading comments because there's WAY too many posted here for me to read through in case somebody already asked this; 1. what grit sandpaper did you use, and 2. was it necessary to wipe down the walls after you sanded? Thanks!
I appreciate the tips you gave in this video, I used them to do the second coat of paint in my new apartment and the experience went from shoddy and tiresome to efficient and rather fun.
I wish I had found this video years ago, I've always hated painting but this makes so much more sense and is way more efficient. About to attempt to paint my entire 3 bed by myself, previous homeowner did an AWFUL job so a lot of sanding, filling etc to prep first
I dont recommend an amateur painting a 40 foot tall foyer themselves, but if you absolutely want to then... Yes, push broom from top to bottom to knock loose dust remaining off, 180 or 220 but very light sanding. No need to put much pressure on the wall. Do ceiling first if you're painting that as well then work top to bottom on the walls, one at a time. When putting the ladder on the walls make sure your first coat is completely dry before you move to the second coat. Also, invest in some foam ladder caps for the top of the ladder and wrap them with clean soft rags to keep them from marking the first coat. Foyers are no joke, and can be tricky moving a ladder around in so be very careful.
We love everything you do! An update on our painting adventures. We purchased everything you said and followed your instructions and discovered a paint brush is an instrument. I’m the right hands it will produce beautiful music. In the wrong hands , all the notes hurt your ears. When we attempted to paint a black wall next to a white one…. We had to go get tape. I am sure with enough practice we would be able to do what you showed. However we only had 4 times to practice. Lol. Thanks for all the info.
Don't feel bad about that. I paint for a living and I use tape sometimes too. You will find that some corners are really easy to paint a straight line next to and others are really difficult. There's nothing wrong with using tape when the brush alone isn't working.

Wish I would of.. watching now I did walls first wish I would of done trim first!!
@@mathualuisy1604 I agree! I was wondering why he didn’t address taping or the splatter at all since this is a video for beginners?

Well done. 👏👏👏

Why didn't he wipe the walls down after sanding?
50 years. Thank you for your service. Although, being a painter means that you do get thanked fairly regularly 😀
If you use decent paint and a decent sleeve you won't get spits. Shouldn't need tape on the baseboard.
@@ToddHarris Came to the comments to ask the same question
Have a bucket with warm water and rag nearby to instantly wipe any small error. After sanding, run your dry hand across the wall, if there is dust from sanding wipe the walls clean. Use a mildly sticky roller on your paint roller to remove loose fibers before using it to paint @ 15:49 he removes some fibers from the wall. Before you start cutting in with the brush, load up your roller and leave it in the paint tray (not in the paint area) and place the tray in a 13-gallon garbage bag (so it doesn't start to dry out), this preps the roller & gives time for the paint to soak in.
Couldn't understand why the wall was not dusted. Second the rag: I usually have a damp cloth on a tool belt to grab quickly.

He’s getting paint splatter from the roller all over his trim/floor molding
Do you have to wipe the walls after sanding?
You are not creating dust after sanding; the sanding is just to remove imperfections. I would advise against wiping even with a soft cloth, because the paint has to cure. Just use a clean sanding pad.
@@paintpaintpaintco.6039 yes he is, and his ceiling cut looks like shit. Where he stops and leans on wall to talk about ordinance you can see a horrible line right above his head. Baseboard looked very poor as well right from the start.

( I had to completely and thoroughly sand and prime the walls as the stripey finish would have haunted every layer of paint)
The only tips I'm keeping from this video are how to cut in the ceiling and around the trim. I didn't need to tape off anything and only had to wipe up a couple of spots where I goofed and got a little paint on the trim.
My Dad's advice:
Wash, patch and sand areas if needed. Put a light coat of primer over the spackled areas.
Lightly sand the walls with ~150 grit sandpaper and wipe down with a clean microfiber mop head.
Prime the walls with primer ...very important step and don't skip it according to my Dad
Lightly Sand between all coats of paint with 180 to 220 grit paper and wipe away the dust again with the clean microfiber mop. I know this fellow in the video says wiping after sanding not needed ever but why get dust and such stuck in your paint finish.
Divide the wall length horizontally in 3 sections and about 4 feet vertically. Apply paint with a 6mm to 10 mm roller ( the video says 18 mm but this gives a thick heavy textured look that i didnt like and the smaller pile roller gives a smoother finish)
In the ~3x4 foot sections going from the ceiling to the floor,
Apply the paint in a M then roll over this M horizontally in a zip zag motion
Do this to the other 2 sections below your first section.

You can also hold the bristles and paint down first, then across to remove those downward brush strokes.

I've been painting for decades and never used an M or a W! I've always just cut in then filled in!
That's how I learned, too, so I am trying to unlearn that and just go up and down.
Straya...Maaaaaaate.
Do you wipe off the excess after sanding? Where did you get the sander? Was it like in the video? I’m in Adelaide so be good to know. Thanks mate
Watched your videos for a while! Thanks for the great information
I’ve been a GC for over 30 years, and I absolutely hate painting myself, but I have watched and heard all this from my best painting subcontractors throughout the years. God bless you for boiling it all down to tips for the homeowner and DIYer.
As someone who is also vertically challenged, I love using extension poles. One that locks in place seems like a wonderful addition.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I followed the instructions of this video and saved a lot of money. Thanks to you im starting anew business.
I've painted more rooms than I can remember in my 68 years... and that's the first time I've seen what the curve on the 5:1 tool is for! 🤣 Finally I can get some of that paint back out of the rollers!
Friendly tip! My Favorite tools are 5 in 1, Duster, 6'' whizz, Tray arm, and the Richard gooseneck paint brush. Cheers! The gooseneck guy! Cheers!👍
My favourite tool!
“None of this “w” business.”
Jeff… You just changed the game! 🤯
w is folks without a paint stick. and they use way too much paint
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY When sanding the walls between coats, do you wipe down the walls before starting the next coat?
I fully agree!!Used C2 on our house 16 years ago! Still looks great!!
In my years of painting as an amateur, I never knew about sanding between coats. Great advice!
Sounds like an absolute waste of time, I’d personally advise sanding before if needed and I know I’m no pro but I’ve done a lot painting over the last 15 years I can’t say I’ve ever experienced a sandpaper like finish he describes in this video, the biggest reason it sounds like a waste of time however is because who the hell is feeling up their walls 😂
as long as you’re happy with how it looks I’d seriously recommend spending your time on anything else instead
@@eirebhoy132 maybe it’s because it’s plaster and not Sheetrock like what I have in my basement because I’ve never heard of that either
@@eirebhoy132 : Like you said you’re not a pro…..it’s about the visual finish. Stick to being a milkman !!!!
Dude you're fire 🔥🔥🔥 with the corner edges without any tape just the brush. Great techniques & tips and advice. Thank you.
I watched your original A-Z painting video, and although we have always painted our own house I finally paint and especially edge without taping! I tell everyone about your channel! Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you Sheila.

I should’ve let a pro do it I’ve lost my sanity
I'm gonna be painting my walls next week and this video is ao useful. I also watched the removing wallpaper! I'm glad these videos exist
@Jesus is coming. Read the Gospel. very strange you're in the wrong thread of comments
A couple of obervations:
- Clean the dust off the wall after sanding
- USE PRIMER (i'm not sure if this is how its called). This layer of primer will make your paint stick and will allow the paint to be spread evenly. Otherwise its all gonna be a disaster.
- Stir up the paint with a stick before pouring
- Use good tools
I was looking for this comment as he didn’t wipe off the dust after sanding and I was certain it was an important step to take
Some paints don’t require primer or have primer in them.
Ah thank you that’s what I’m here for I wondered if wiping the walls after sanding had to be done.
How do you clean the dust off?
@Belgee Thank you for the extra tips. Could you let us know which grit sandpaper did you use? Also, did you use microfiber rags to clean off the dust, or something else?
What was the sandpaper grit?
And did you wipe the wall after sanding? Love the details you showed on cutting in

It’s nice to see you shortening the videos for the homeowners! You’re getting better at these videos I’ve watched for over a year!
Glad you like them!
Yes, it does. I also found that odd.
My question too!! Cleaning walls - assuming that’s not needed if sanding but there has to be some kind of wipe with a moist cloth after sanding…??
That was going to be my question also. I haven’t read all the comments so perhaps I’ll find the answer below.

Great job Jamie! Cheers my man!
I’m retiring from my job in a year and I’m going to paint my home room by room, MYSELF. Thank you so much for your platform!!!!
Yes
If you sand the wall before painting or in between, turn off the air conditioning. Fans etc also off. Wait an hour before you start sanding the wall so that the dust does not fly in the air. Use a lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe the dust. Do not wet the cloth. This is what I do myself, but I'm not a professional, so I don't know if it's the right way 😂
Yes.
@@__YODA__well you can leave the ac and fans running if you have the proper PPE and let the windows up
Between sanding I get a damp micro fiber cloth do a quick wipe down.
Do you need to put anything on before you start painting?
Thank you, while I had a little experience painting, I was much more confident repainting a bedroom with your guide.
Buying the pole extension for the roller is a must. Same thing when cleaning the walls, use something with a handle so you can save your back.
All the skills you need! I painted my whole house from this channel good to see it all in one video for the new year! CHEERS!!!
Happy new year!
Nonsense use quality paint and it wont happen
@@musheopeaus4125 you’re 100% right only 50% of the time remember that
@@musheopeaus4125 how do you paint mud huts?
@@musheopeaus4125 you talk nonsense. here in europe we have other paint and you can buy the best paint for about 200 bucks per bucket and it still drips... Here we use emulsion paint or distemper paint. That in the video looks like varnish paint.
Thanks great tip 👍
I started watching this video while standing on a ladder taping my ceiling 😂😂😂😂

I hope you're still reading comments because there's WAY too many posted here for me to read through in case somebody already asked this; 1. what grit sandpaper did you use, and 2. was it necessary to wipe down the walls after you sanded? Thanks!
220 and no. Cheers Shar!
I appreciate the tips you gave in this video, I used them to do the second coat of paint in my new apartment and the experience went from shoddy and tiresome to efficient and rather fun.
I wish I had found this video years ago, I've always hated painting but this makes so much more sense and is way more efficient. About to attempt to paint my entire 3 bed by myself, previous homeowner did an AWFUL job so a lot of sanding, filling etc to prep first
It's cool to see people passionate about their craft. Great video!
Love the video. Questions: 1 Do you wipe after sanding? 2. What grit on sanding? 3. Recommendations for a 40 foot foyer?
