I’m a single mom that used to pay and get ripped off or half-off jobs. Thanks to your channel and other kind and knowledgeable RUclipsrs I have been fixing my home the right way. Yes it’s a lot of work but the satisfaction of seeing a good job and knowing the quality of materials is so worth it. Thanks and God bless.
I used to hate painting, but I've grown to love it once I bought Jeff's recommended tools. Take time, learn to cut, and you'll speed through rooms. Thanks for everything, Jeff, especially the painting and drywall techniques. They've been life-changing and have allowed me to gain the skills I didn't think were possible as a DIYer.
I can’t thank you enough. I’ve learned how to do drywall, tape texture and paint. Large shop 160 sheets one helper (my wife). All drywall is up, taped and textured. Paint tomorrow. You saved me 14,000 US dollars. And I bought all the tools lift trowels correct buckets. Everything. I did cheat and buy a ridgid drywall gun
Thanks for doing these painting ones - that's about the only DIY I feel safe attempting, these days! Appreciate all you do to help all of us out here on the interwebs.
I started a small painting company years ago as a side gig to help supplement my full time income. I used the same sanding head and handle. I recently invested some of my profit in a Festool Hepa vaccuum and Planex orbital 10 inch sanding system. The system does such an great job prepping the the walls getting rid of all those old dried pimples, sags and roller lines. It's fast, efficient, clean and worth every penny!
Fast pace of information and straight to the point. I prefer going back and listening again (if it's too fast) rather than skipping forward because I get tired waiting for people ot get to the point.
If only you could be available in the UK to offer advice. Brilliant videos. I have been doing my own painting for a number of years but am rarely satisfied with the end result. Thank you for all the tips and advice.
Gracias amigo, I was waiting for you to change the direction of the coat and the video was almost over, jeje... still very good tips. thanx for sharing.
I live in the uk doing the kitchen atm , what a job many years ago when the kitchen was re vamped no mist coat was applied, the paint has peeled of the walls back to plaster.
Great tip regarding the sunlight direction. Especially, useful in a hall that has sunlight on it in the afternoon. Did a job painted vertically and couldn't understand why the finished hall paint looked patchy, realised I need to repaint in horizontal motion.
A good trick with ceiling paint and it's brilliant (super) white is to add a small amount of black paint. It reduces the likelihood of any imperfections on the base surface. My paint store adds the black tint when purchasing it or their ceiling paint has black in it from the manufacturer.
I love watching your videos , and I love Paint Life TV as well, you both paint great, but it’s definitely a different approach and I would LOVE to see a live stream with you both!
Jeff- all these steps and tips are great. I work as a handyman and I have been in some homes recently where the room looks like trash from “professional” painters. No sanding, no attention to detail on the wall board dents etc etc etc. awful.
Great video, again. Love your content. Could you do some paint/repair work for southern California where every time the earth moves, the walls re-crack and re-split? Asking for a 'frustrated friend'
After you sand, do you wipe down the wall or tack the wall? I also find that sanding is so dusty. How do you contain the mess when living in the house with pets and kids?
11:15 what sandpaper grit should I be using for a situation where I messed up and have rough dry patches and raised edges from striping in my paint finish?
Great videos - what is the best texture of paint to use on a large wall (going up stairs from main floor to second level) that has wavy walls so that one can see the dry wall seems ? Thx
I only saw this vid because I was looking up the old one for a refresher (I think Jeff has a grey shirt in the thumbnail for that one). I already did patching, primer (for the old paint, I know I know probably not necessary) and first coat of colour today but I’ll watch this one anyway haha One thing I noticed, my cut lines near the ceiling look “thin” compared to the rest of the wall after I rolled. I swear I loaded the brush into the bottom of a handy pail my pulls were maybe a foot at the most. Any ideas?
10 minutes ago? This is what I need! I tried using one of those Magnum air brush things (thinking it would be like an airbrush for wedding cakes), boy was I mistaken. I didn't like it at all. It was really messy and loud, and I just didn't have fun, lol. Luckily I didn't have to pay for the Magnum air brush thing. A friend had one I can borrow. Anyways, I used it for the primer, and I said fuck this. I'm doing it the normal way for the final coat of paint. So this will be a useful video!
Beginner painter here, Is there ever a time when you wouldn't go through all this trouble to prep a room for paint, or would that only be if you recommend doing the job right and they offer to hire you for far less and have you just kind of throw it together? Great tips in here! Thanks for the info!
The only thing I would criticize (as an armchair handy guy), is to buy a "non-drip" caulking gun. That way you don't have to back it off when not applying caulk. The other pro tip is to cut a very small hole at the tip and just apply minimal caulk. Wetting your finger can help smooth it, as well.
Hi, great video. When you are caulking, what do you do to clean your fingers off? Carry a rag? When I was doing a lot of caulking, I would often put up pieces of paper/tape around, so that I could easily wipe my fingers off.
Great chanel - just subbed. So - do you have any videos on priming? I tend to prime no matter if I am painting over contractor white, a room that was painted years ago, or new drywall. I have a project coming up to paint over a darker color so I intend to prime before I start formal painting - and NOW, I will sand before and between!!!
Good stuff. Thanks. Im not telling anyone what to do. But waring a dust mask would probably be good for your health while sanding and spraying arisol paint cans. Good video though.
Thanks for this video! Just a few details to add. The stain blocker in can, I usually use 1-2-3 and I guess it should be the same for Kilz, when used it leaves a thin coat of white powder around the area you sprayed. So better protect those surfaces. I know you already mentioned mud doesn’t flash. Everyone doesn’t have the luxury to wait a day to have the hole filler dried. I usually use the DryDex pink spackling to do repair and paint in the same day. It says on the container «No Primer Required» but in fact it does. I think there are other spackling from DryDex that doesn’t «flash» (sorry I can’t remember the name). P.S. : At 29:14 - You know these characters in movies, sitcoms that do painting... they always drop paint on themselves. 🙄 Jeff, this mark on your head is so cliché, it’s is just unacceptable from a pro like you! 😉😁 (just kidding!)
Check out varsol. It is a paint thinner and solvent, often used to clean oil-based paint. It'll break down paint and can be used on hard surfaces like tiles.
Well that explains what the previous home owner did. We have rooms with latex paint peeling off the walls in various spots. However, because they didn't even paint evenly, I can't just straight up peel the paint off the wall. Do you have any suggestions for the simplest way to remove the loose paint and make sure the rest of it sticks? I desperately want to repaint but I don't want to go through all the effort if the latex paint underneath is just peeling off and taking my paint off with it.
Are all indoor wall paints latex based? I can't find any information as to what the paints are made of, the only information they have is whether it's glossy or matt and how washable they claim the walls are after painting. Do these recommendations also apply for "real" (eg. brick and mortar) walls or just drywall?
Do you sand when the wall is textured, mine are super textured. Where do you buy the yellow arm to hold the roller, that is great, never seen one but what a great idea.
Mine is a new construction. We’re in our home for like 8 years now. But I would like to change the paint color. Do I still need to sand the walls or just prep the wall, primer & paint my desired color..??
if im painting a new colour onto a wall, do i need to prime it again before doing the new colour or just do 2 coats of the new paint colour ontop of the old?
if it is latex on latex and the old color is not too dark then simply cover it with 2 coats. If you need to cover a loud color the n using a primer will make it easier to cover instead of using 3 coats of an expensive paint. CHeers!
What did the painters do back in the say 1950s for Drywall Sealer primer? And angled sanding blocks? 😂 I always wonder about this stuff because I never saw it back in the 80s
Hey Jeff, not relevant to this video but in your of your vids you mentioned you got all your appliances from a place outside Ottawa. I’m in that area and in the market for cheap appliances and would love to know where you got them!
Painters tape is made for a good reason If you need tape use it. I'm a professional painter and don't like having a rag in my hand while painting cut bucket in one hand and my cut brush in the other. I like Jeff don't get me wrong . Some of the things he does is not necessary all the time.
Hi, just got some few questions: 1. Do I need to wear a face mask and gloves or does new paint technology is safe with skin contact and breathing/lungs? 2. If I paint the room in the morning, can I sleep the same day/night?
You telling us not to use tape is like a server who memorizes orders perfectly training the newbie to not write orders down lol. We are not as good as you
Honestly, painters tape is harder. It will pull paint off and you get feathers underneath. Learn to control your brush, go slow, get a proper cutting in brush and always have a clean damp cloth and wipe mistakes off as you go.
@@catherineandrews8054 you have to use clear caulking to seal the tape and then pull the tape before the paint drys and it’s fine. But after i made that comment i painted the baseboards in my bathrooms with no tape and it was ALMOST perfect.
What happened to your voice towards the end? Are you ok? Anyway thank you for this update tutorial. I use a damp cloth to remove dust i can't remember if you mentioned that or not. Then the hoover to hoover dust off the skirtings and floor

Cheers Chris, Happy to be of help!
Thrilled this popped up in my algorithm. Getting ready to paint my home in effort to sale. This information was on time.
Glad it was helpful! Next week the video will show how to paint the whole room. Cheers!
Preparation is better than starting all over again
Many professional painters don't prep correctly either.
The carpet in the hall… I remember when we had that very carpet put in our shop in the mid 70’s!
Some of us still have to see that carpet 😵💫
Keep up the effort, these videos have helped me transform my house
Glad to help

They never make mistakes on Ask this old house🤣😂, thanks for keeping it real because that the world we live and work in!!
I agree with you though Ask this old house is scripted and Jeff goes live...both are great channels to learn.
We are thought to respect our teachers...and I respect you Jeff. Thank you for teaching me a lot!!
I appreciate that!

My favorite Saturday show. That hallway carpet and wallpaper…holy smokes!
we filmed this at my new Forever Home. doing live shows if you want to follow along on the journey!
I love watching him, and thought the same thing, You gotta wonder what were the previous owners thinking! Yikes

It is like striking gold finding a worthwhile content creator on RUclips!!
Chris, we need a video like this on how to re-paint rooms with crown moulding!
We have textured plaster on all our walls and I wish it was this straight forward to prep 😢 thank you for the helpful info.
Watch his video on sealing asbestos popcorn ceiling. Most of that should apply to your job. Good Luck!
Thanks!

How does the sanding step change if the walls are textured? The southwest has a perverse love affair with orange peel finish.
Skip it

put a fan in the window so the airborne dust goes out the window. vacuum the rest . Cheers!

thank you! Perfect timing to find you. Does the Kilz flat oil stain block cover crayon marks (wax)?
Master at work.
You are the best.
What about the drywall sanding dust? I didn't see a step to clean the walls? Is that necessary or just let it get rolled into the primer/paint?
I'm curious have you tried the acetone test on any hybrid paints like BM Advanced or Aura. Or SW Emerald.
Whats the best primer if you are painting a door after you have sanded it. The door was previously painted with oil paint.
You have to use oil primer

Would you still sand the wall if it was textured with orange peel or knockdown before prime/paint?
Jeff -- clean your camera lens. Big dot. Middle bottom 1/3. And to right of mid screen
They've had it for some time now - it appears to be a lens burn mark from welding or laser.
