    I’m a single mom that used to pay and get ripped off or half-off jobs. Thanks to your channel and other kind and knowledgeable RUclipsrs I have been fixing my home the right way. Yes it’s a lot of work but the satisfaction of seeing a good job and knowing the quality of materials is so worth it. Thanks and God bless.

Thanks for everything, Jeff, especially the painting and drywall techniques. They've been life-changing and have allowed me to gain the skills I didn't think were possible as a DIYer.

    I started a small painting company years ago as a side gig to help supplement my full time income. I used the same sanding head and handle. I recently invested some of my profit in a Festool Hepa vaccuum and Planex orbital 10 inch sanding system. The system does such an great job prepping the the walls getting rid of all those old dried pimples, sags and roller lines. It's fast, efficient, clean and worth every penny!

    A good trick with ceiling paint and it's brilliant (super) white is to add a small amount of black paint. It reduces the likelihood of any imperfections on the base surface. My paint store adds the black tint when purchasing it or their ceiling paint has black in it from the manufacturer.

I'm looking for some advise on what to use when painting over painted walls that have mildew. I've been looking at Zinsser bullseye and Zinsser BIN but unsure if they are sufficient or overkill.

    What did the painters do back in the say 1950s for Drywall Sealer primer? And angled sanding blocks? 😂 I always wonder about this stuff because I never saw it back in the 80s

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад +2

      Good question! In the 1950s, painters typically used oil-based primers for drywall sealing. These primers formed a solid base for paint, helping to seal the porous surface of the drywall and improve paint adhesion. As for tools, painters often relied on hand-sanding methods, using sandpaper wrapped around wooden blocks or even manual sanding sponges to smooth surfaces.
      Angled sanding blocks, which are designed to reach corners and edges more easily, may not have been as common or specialized as the tools we see today. Many DIYers and professionals created their own makeshift solutions to achieve the desired finish.
      During the 1980s, the advancement of materials and tools led to a broader availability of products designed specifically for drywall finishing, including better sanding tools. This evolution has made tasks more efficient and results more consistent over time. If you’re curious about specific products or techniques from that era!
      HRD WORK AND DANGEROUS!

  • @marcl2213
    @marcl2213 6 месяцев назад +1

    Thanks for this video! Just a few details to add. The stain blocker in can, I usually use 1-2-3 and I guess it should be the same for Kilz, when used it leaves a thin coat of white powder around the area you sprayed. So better protect those surfaces. I know you already mentioned mud doesn’t flash. Everyone doesn’t have the luxury to wait a day to have the hole filler dried. I usually use the DryDex pink spackling to do repair and paint in the same day. It says on the container «No Primer Required» but in fact it does. I think there are other spackling from DryDex that doesn’t «flash» (sorry I can’t remember the name).
    P.S. : At 29:14 - You know these characters in movies, sitcoms that do painting... they always drop paint on themselves. 🙄 Jeff, this mark on your head is so cliché, it’s is just unacceptable from a pro like you! 😉😁 (just kidding!)

    • @hayder464

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад +1

      If you are painting a previously oil-painted door that has been sanded, you’ll need a bonding primer specifically designed for transitioning from oil-based to water-based (latex) paint or for ensuring good adhesion with oil-based paints. I use a low VOC water based bonding primer to avoid VOCs that will cause long term health consequences. I have primed mirrors with this stuff!

    Well that explains what the previous home owner did. We have rooms with latex paint peeling off the walls in various spots. However, because they didn't even paint evenly, I can't just straight up peel the paint off the wall. Do you have any suggestions for the simplest way to remove the loose paint and make sure the rest of it sticks? I desperately want to repaint but I don't want to go through all the effort if the latex paint underneath is just peeling off and taking my paint off with it.

    What nap of roller are you using for the finish coat

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад +2

      Well, I guess I will answer your question. It is probably a 3/8 inch nap length, microfiber roller as this is the moct common length nap and the most user friendly. here are some of the benefits:
      1. Superior Paint Pickup and Release
      High Absorption: Microfiber rollers hold more paint than traditional rollers, reducing the need to frequently reload.
      Even Distribution: They release paint evenly, minimizing streaks and roller marks.
      2. Smooth Finish
      Microfiber rollers are excellent for creating a smooth, uniform finish, especially on flat and lightly textured surfaces like walls, ceilings, and furniture.
      Ideal for water-based paints, they help achieve a consistent coat without excessive buildup.
      3. Versatility
      Available in various nap lengths, microfiber rollers can handle different surfaces:
      Short Nap (3/16" - 3/8"): Perfect for smooth surfaces like cabinets, doors, and walls.
      Medium Nap (1/2"): Works well on slightly textured surfaces like plaster or drywall.
      Long Nap (3/4" and above): Suitable for rougher surfaces like brick or stucco.
      4. Minimal Splatter
      Compared to standard rollers, microfiber rollers reduce splatter, making them ideal for ceilings and other overhead work. This helps keep the work area cleaner.
      5. Durability
      Microfiber rollers are long-lasting and maintain their quality even after multiple uses, as long as they are properly cleaned and stored.
      They resist matting, ensuring consistent performance over time.
      6. Efficient Coverage
      Their ability to pick up and release paint efficiently often means fewer coats are needed, saving time and effort.
      7. Compatibility with Modern Paints
      Microfiber rollers excel with low-VOC and fast-drying paints, which are increasingly common in modern applications.
      Their even application helps prevent lap marks and ensures smooth drying.
      When to Use Microfiber Rollers
      For a smooth, professional finish on walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets.
      When working with water-based or latex paints.

    Is it necessary to wash/wipe down walls BEFORE doing an overall sanding?

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад

      It's a good idea always, as you don't want to introduce any impurities deeper into the substrate/walls!

    10 minutes ago? This is what I need!
    I tried using one of those Magnum air brush things (thinking it would be like an airbrush for wedding cakes), boy was I mistaken. I didn't like it at all. It was really messy and loud, and I just didn't have fun, lol.
    Luckily I didn't have to pay for the Magnum air brush thing. A friend had one I can borrow.
    Anyways, I used it for the primer, and I said fuck this. I'm doing it the normal way for the final coat of paint. So this will be a useful video!

    11:15 what sandpaper grit should I be using for a situation where I messed up and have rough dry patches and raised edges from striping in my paint finish?

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад +2

      To smooth out rough dry patches and raised edges from stripped paint, start with a medium grit sandpaper, such as 120 or 150 grit. This will help remove the rough areas without damaging the surrounding paint too much. After you've sanded the rough spots down, you can switch to a finer grit, like 220 or 320 grit, to create a smooth finish before repainting. Make sure to sand lightly and evenly to avoid creating new imperfections. Always wear a mask to protect yourself from dust, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. if that doesn't work, go over it with a skim coat of drywall mud and sand it down, wipe off dust, prime and paint!

    Would you still sand the wall if it was textured with orange peel or knockdown before prime/paint?

    • @MMPRECISIONPAINTING
      @MMPRECISIONPAINTING 21 день назад +1

      Yes, but lightly! This is to smooth out your texture, so your final coat will reflect less light to create a more uniform paint layer. If you fail to do this, you will get severe flashing that you can't get out without sanding over already dried paint "pain in the butt" and repriming and painting!

    if im painting a new colour onto a wall, do i need to prime it again before doing the new colour or just do 2 coats of the new paint colour ontop of the old?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  2 месяца назад +2

      if it is latex on latex and the old color is not too dark then simply cover it with 2 coats. If you need to cover a loud color the n using a primer will make it easier to cover instead of using 3 coats of an expensive paint. CHeers!

      How to Test if You Need Primer:
      Adhesion Test:
      Lightly sand a small area of the surface. Paint a test patch without primer. After drying, scratch it lightly. If it peels off easily, you need primer.
      Color Coverage Test:
      Apply a small amount of your new paint on the old color. If it looks patchy or translucent, a primer will help.

    Great chanel - just subbed. So - do you have any videos on priming? I tend to prime no matter if I am painting over contractor white, a room that was painted years ago, or new drywall. I have a project coming up to paint over a darker color so I intend to prime before I start formal painting - and NOW, I will sand before and between!!!

      He is not! I do!!!! Always wipe down after sanding as failing to do so results in poor adhesion, which ironically is one of the reasons you sand !!
