My father taught me to put a piece of wood like a 2x2 in the wall behind the patch sheetrock. You screw it in place and then screw the patch sheetrock to the 2x2.
You bashing a hole in the drywall with the hammer reminded me of when a friend brought round his son with his bike. The bike had modern tyres etc, my mate told me he had spent 3 hours mending a puncture on this bike. The bike had QR wheels which enabled very quick taking out and replacing of wheels as developed in the bike racing world. I decided he couldn't have known how to mend the puncture very quickly. I got a bradawl and on my bike pushed the bradawl into the perfectly good front tyre, did the correct wheel removal, took out the inner tube, put good one in, reassembled the wheel and put it back. Maybe 10 minutes at most, not quick for racing but adequate for leisure riding. Found the puncture the old tube and repaired it with a patch. I asked why it took him so long?? He had completely disassembled the QR spindle assembly, had a terrible job getting it back together properly. Had 3 goes at mending the puncture and it took forever to get the wheel in properly! About 6 months after, I recalled the incident to see if he could tell me why it took him so long, he said he couldn't remember. "Did you remember me puncturing my tyre with the bradawl", I asked, "no he re[lied". I was amazed how he had completely forgotten, his son later told me his memory on those sorts of things were severely lacking!!! Your puncturing the dry wall gave me a chuckle, thanks!!!
I have been asking my boyfriend for months to fix the holes in the bathroom so i could repaint. Never happened. So i decided to do it myself. I know nothing about drywall and he in not so many words said id never be able to make it look good enough that it wouldn’t be noticed. Thank god i found you. After watching i pretty much think i am a pro drywall person and these holes will be patched up and look professional as hell. Im so confident that ill be. Video taping it just in case my bf says i cheated and hired someone. Ill let tou know but man you were heaven sent.
You get it! It's not about the clicks, the advertisements, the "I'm smarter-than-you" attitude, it's about sharing years of experience in an easy-to-understand explanation of real tricks of the trade. Thank you.
Kind of. He has a good knowledge and probably be a good handyman. However I jave seen at this video lot good ideas as well as not good ideas. Look at my comments
I’m a 76yr old female tired of hearing how no one wants to do small jobs. Your tutoring was enlightening & very enjoyable. I’m ready to do my own repairs. Thank you so much. I have subscribed ❤
No one wants to do it because in your mind what he did is worth less then 10 dollars because it took him less then 10 min. But most people forget, he not only had to gather up all the tools and supplies, he had to wash them too, which takes an hour. so that small hole you made, is about 50-100 dollar job. Really hard to convince people of this and not worth the headache and time to do so. It is best to not ask and do it yourself. It's really an easy job.
Hey man you truly deserve the Nobel peace prize for the amounts of stress you save. So many are discouraged and miserable to do this. You truly are a master of your many crafts! You’ve given me the confidence to fix the issues I’ve been scared to.
Yes! Finally found a channel that I'm not bailing out of within 30 seconds. This is exactly how everyone should do it! I'm not getting frustrated and yelling "would you just get to it, PULEEEEZE!" I can watch every second and never feel that urge. No fluff. No cutsie lead ins. Just right to it. The pace is perfect. I LOVE IT! Thank you Jeff!
You have me in tears! I just bought my first home a year ago and it is an old house. I am single mother and have only my income to provide for me and my son, so every penny counts! I had someone coming in to fix a small role in the dry wall and was quoted $100 for the service. I know maybe does not seems a lot but for me it is. So I came to youtube to find how to fix it and I found your channel. I have most of the material at home (as I have been doing some reno) and after watching your video I am sure I can do it myself, as I have done so many other small fixings around the house. It will save me a lot of money! Money that I don't have and that I would have to take from groceries to pay the contractor. Thank you so much! I cant express how much I appreciate you taking the time to teach us all this tricks. It is a life saving!! God bless you!
There are so many things that are easy to learn from the great people whom are willing to share. Most are professionals! I’m in the same boat as you. I learned a lot in the last 4 yrs. Hope it turned out well!
I’m 73 yo in wheelchair alone Stumbled across this link - I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. I think you’re a lot of fun- take the fear causing procrastination. Keep up the great work! Proud of you, Son! Thank you 😊
I do drywall work for a living and I watch videos occasionally to see new tips or tricks. Most of the time I see videos that make me cringe but you do an awesome job. You teach me even more. Love it! Thanks man!
One of the best things about your presentations is the quick pace. You don't drone on and on like some do. You get a huge amount of information into a relatively short amount of time. If I miss something, I can always rewind a little bit and listen again. Great work!

Jeff, I renovated several properties in my 64 years, and two years ago, I took on a job repairing and renovating rooms in a hotel. Your "less is more" narrative, along with your innovative tips and tricks invaluable. Goes to show, never too late for learning, thank you, stay safe. ..
Jeff is really good at explaining his tricks and fixes. His ability to make you think "I can do that!" is refreshing to someone who is a novice (like me) at doing something new. Thanks.
I super appreciate the "it's just drywall" mentality. Drywall really is a scary thing to mess with for a lot of people, me included. This video greatly boosted my confidence in the matter.
I totally see why you have 1.23 M subscribers! You are, by leaps and bounds the most informative DIYer instructor out there. I've watched hundreds over the years and you won Best in Class...
You have no idea how much this helps us handymen- do-it-yourselfers! It's truly a godsend for people like me who mostly don't have the knowledge to know how to go about these things.
Wow! A 16 year old that wants to learn something not required!?!?! Good for you! You can spend your whole life paying someone else to do work for you, or you can learn to do it yourself and not only save money, but have a sense of pride and ownership as well! It's was very refreshing to see your comment, gives me hope that the younger generation won't all be a bunch of dependent puppets! 👏
One and Done approach. Love this guy and he jokes and smiles while he instructs and educates. What a winner!!! Character and personality as well as a hard worker.
This was the BEST lesson I have ever seen about dry wall challenges. The covering up textured ceilings with drywall is pure genius. I wish I knew about that before I spent hours and hours of scrapping all that stucco crap off my ceiling, and then cleaning up that mess!! You are the man!
U probably know now but cheap plastic on floors when you’re down roll up and toss lots of hours saved there’ 2 if u spray the ceiling with water and wait a few mins it falls off with a quick pass’ Don’t do those things and u will waste hours and hours’
yeah tried that trick in a room. problem was the textured ceiling wasn't that well adhered to the ceiling and a 50 lb sheet of sheet rock came down along with the textured ceiling. one way to get textured ceiling off the ceiling! fortunately no one was in the room when it happened but it scared the ba-jeebers out of my wife and me! will spend hours & hours scraping and breathing the dust and clean up the blooming mess before I try that "trick" again.
Life changer, never seen that California patch before, no telling how many times, I've screwed paint sticks to the wall from the back and cut a piece and screwed it to the paint sticks. THAT looks so flipping simple.
Just finished repairing a 17 inch by 19 hole caused by a leaking roof. Watching your videos and following your instructions the repair looked like it was done by a professional contractor. Thank goodness for the popcorn spraying. Thanks to your videos.
Great patch I learned in 1968. I use a better more solid patching when the patched area's that may be damaged easier again. I am a painter drywall repair Person and still working at the age of 84. 55 years in the trade. I use allot of hot mud. You have a great site
I was trying to patch a hole before painting using one of those patch kits from Home Depot. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the patch to look anything close to level to the surrounding wall. I think I'm going to cut the whole thing out and try the California patch trick. I have never seen that before, but my mouth hung open in amazement when I saw it.

OMG! You are amazing! I'm a woman that enjoys doing renovations. I think you ought to have a Nobel Peace Prize for bringing peace of mind to your viewers! Thank you.
GREAT tips!! I sent this to my grandson who just bought his first house. He wants to do some Renos. He is only 21 and such a super young man. Hope all your tips will help him do a great job. Thank you.

You are amazing. Thank you. Being a single woman homeowner in US I can’t tell you how many times contractors have taking advantage of me. I’ve learned it better to do myself. You are making that possible. Thank you. Plus I enjoy learning it too.
I’m sitting here like “wow”!!! I am SO happy to have found your channel! I am embarking on some patching and painting projects in my home...I am a bit daunted but now watching a few of your vids I think I can do this! Lol!! You’re a great teacher!! Thank you!!

The Bob Ross of Drywall strikes again! 😁 That patch using the paper from the drywall was brilliant! I have watched a lot of DIY drywall videos and that was the first I had ever seen it. Man, It has been almost 2 years ago that I stumbled across your videos. I am so so glad I did!! Best DIY youtube channel! Best membership program EVER!
he calls it california patch. in florida its called a blowout patch. except if you peel the white paper off of wall say an incha nd a half or two inches' same with patch. it will require even less blending for a smooth surfaces.
You know what your doing I love how you still get exited about taping. I am a taper so I know how useful these techniques can be especially pre filling and flat taping.
Best video on sheet rock repairs that I have ever seen. Watched the whole video and got tips the whole way on how to make my repairs even better and easier solutions to common situations. Thank you!
Jeff, I have done DryWall for decades, but I had never seen the “California Patch”! I love it. Thanks! And those inspection panels! Great!! Great channel as ever!
I have been hassling my husband to fix a hole in the wall for ages but after watching your video I think I’ll have a go myself! You’re a legend , you make it look so easy and a great boost in confidence for all who are in fear of attempting any thing that is put into “ this a job for a tradie to do”! Will let you know how I go 😀🙏
I love your energy and all your tips. My husband was supposed to fix a mess that's been an ongoing nightmare in our bathroom. Well, instead of fixing the problem he went on a month vacation. I watched your video and I feel confident I will get the job done without him. Thank you for been around! You're my home project angel!!!
THANK YOU!! The spring loaded access panel cover - OMG. I didn't even know these existed and wish I had known when I was putting in my new tub; would have made my life SO much easier. But at least I have one now so I can always sleep knowing I can check that the shower and tub connections and drain are not only dry, but easy to access and fix! THANK YOU!!!!!
I'm a taper on commercial sites. I've used expanding in multiple situations where other tapers didn't know what to do. . I'm the guy the foreman goes to when a non-standard taping situation comes up. Consequently I'm also usually the last taper on a site. These little tricks are a good way of staying employed.
Wow, thank you so much! The true benefit of your channels is the way you make regular work around the house more approachable to the average joe. Thus saving money and let us feel good. Thank you so much!
I gotta be honest Jeff I'm starting a Carpentry/Handyman business and your videos have practically been my university for learning professional ways to complete projects. If I don't know something I often just come onto your channel to see if you have videos on it! Honestly Thanks for providing these videos!!!
I've watched these 'how to' videos for years and Jeff is the best and the guy I refer to first on any DIY project around the house......smart, practical and doesn't waste the viewers time --- gets right to the issue/solution. His plumbing and drywall in particular is required watching...Bravo!
Jeff, I always learn things by watching your videos. Thank you. I was extremely useless 18 months ago, then I found your channel. I appreciate the way that you deliver information, the do's and don't and if this happens, you can fix it like this. Such great information. Thank you very much!
When I started watching this video, I thought I was not going to learn much. I was quite wrong. Thanks for the neat tricks and tips. My favorites were use of the spring loaded hole cover, spray foam as filler, the bag of compound for sweeping dust, and salt and hot water. Really appreciate your efforts and wow, you are super skilled at drywall. I learned a lot.
Over the past two years, I've completely gutted and remodeled a bathroom, a gym, and combined two big storage closets into an office, and fixed a sagging ceiling -- and I have Jeff to thank for lots of the knowledge. Of course now I see drywall problems in other parts of my house and I can't unsee them. This video had a few techniques that I hadn't seen before -- the drywall to drywall laminating screws, the drywall sweep material (OMG this would have been great to have!), and using foam in the big cracks.
I'm so glad I've found your channel. I've been doing home repairs on multiple properties for 40 years. I learned most of what I know from my father and uncle, the rest I figured out myself. I love your style!
I'm a mum of 3 boys who have made their fair share of holes in the walls. I'm in the process of fixing and painting the walls. Thank you for your awesome informative video! I'm off to Bunnings now to get a bag of 45! I usually use the premixed mud. Wish me luck! 💪🤞✌️
Obviously a true professional and a good teacher. You make it look like a blast. I live in a new house and have no intention of doing drywall work, but I truly enjoyed your video.
This video ….I’m speechless!! You have absolutely changed my life!! We’ve been remodeling our money pit for so long (incl replacing paneling w/ Drywall). The house is settling so every time I would perfect a new area, a few was later I was backpedaling. One day I just gave up & have continued hopelessly watching the walls crack, pop, & break apart. I was dreading simply replacing a 1’x4.5’ area where we replaced a water heater. You have given me a new outlook on drywall in general so I thank you! I’m off to watch your masterclass videos so I can dig out all my tools in the morning & GET BACK TO Work! You’re awesome…thanks again!
Holy cow! that very first trick you did, with the square hole repair and leaving the paper overhang on the front of the patch piece.... brilliant! Seriously.... more that worth the value of this months subscription. Thanks!
I love how easily he explains y he does what he does. A good teacher will always be able to explain what he’s doing in a simple format and very easily. I would give you two likes if I could sir
what do you say we do something about that? "USG" Easy Sand 45 Joint Compound should have sponsored this one, and it's not the only one they should have sponsored! Let's see if we can inspire them. Here's a link to contact them. www.usg.com/content/usgcom/en/about-usg/contact-us.html and, here's a copy of the email I just sent them: usg4you-technicalsupport@usg.com Your company should really think about sponsoring this RUclips channel Jeff Thorman Home RenoVision DIY Jeff has used your products repeatedly. If you sponsor him, I believe he will be sure to mention the name of your product and give a link to purchase YOUR products, when he uses them. :-) Win win for you and Jeff. This would be advertising directly to the consumer who needs your product. I can't imagine a better way to increase revenue. What do you say? I Know I TRUST JEFF's recommendations. Becky Paces
@@bjpacas I have to say as just a fellow viewer, that you are a special person and this you tuber is lucky to have a fan like you. I don't know the financial situation of this channel, but I'm sure they could use any extra revenue streams that they can earn from the hard work and experience they're sharing. I'm a big believer of helping support the content creators that we as content consumers enjoy... And that support can be actual cash donation (a LA patreon) but actively soliciting advertising sponsorship on behalf of this creator is an awesome idea. But then you go a step further and actually share your research and even email template with his other viewers, thus making it easy for others to follow suit. Allow me to graciously thank you for your enthusiasm on behalf of this RUclips creator (for whom I have no relationship and no authority to speak for or represent whatsoever LOL).
I am so grateful for all of your instruction. Because of you, I was able to drywall my new shed and I am so surprised it turned out better than I thought I could do. Now I am going to attempt to tape and mud. Thank you so much for your amazing video's. I watched several others before locking in on yours, you are by far the best!!
Thank you Jeff! Awesome instructions and the 1st 5 minutes will save me a lot of time for repairing where a ceramic toilet paper holder was set into drywall. I saw other methods and yours makes the most sense.
Jeff I have been doing home repairs for years and what I learned today from you was genius! GREAT ADVICE! Thank you so much! Even my kids were into the video. Keep up the good stuff.
I would never have thought of using foam in this way (I've seen it, but never considered it a viable option). Not the first of your videos I've seen, and I gotta say I am impressed by these solutions. You also explain it in just enough detail. Solid job on this video. Thank you!
Thank you soooooo much. I was really getting frustrated with what to do and how to do it and you are very informative. In layman’s terms. Definitely gave precision without frustration or discouraging and thanks to you… I am extremely confident that I can do this. THANK YOU!
Man I wish I would’ve found your videos sooner. Straight to the point. No BS. And a BIGGIE to me… you explain WHAT product, or tool you are using, and why. Subscribed! Look forward to seeing more your videos!
You have a lot of technique and it shows. Trust me without experience I know I will not get the same results. But watching and using these tips I'm sure I will get better results.
Tip :).. when you are cutting out the damage from a hole. Find the piece you want to use as a patch. Hold the patch piece flat on the wall covering the hole and trace it's outine with your pencil. Now cut out the damaged drywall following those lines. You have a hole ready made for your patch.. Good content!! Thanks!
You are a star. What a craftsman. You make it look so easy. I think it's fair to say though you are a skilled man. We need to practise to reach your level(years). However, you are showing us that we can have a go. Watch you long enough and then try. Thank you.
I feel I have found the right steps to patching a wall that had built-in speakers, with a metal frame inside, underneath the drywall. I'm so glad I saw this video, as I feel very confident in completing this process myself... and the other 6...!
I was trying to declot my toilet for the past two days.. seen easy but just couldn't get it to flush(im handy too).. was about to call someone to fix it, but after your video, i fix it in 3 mins! thank you! knowledge truly better the world.
My dad and I messed up a lot doing drywall in our basement for the first time doing a drywalling project. You're amazing and helpful lol. Altho we had a lot of cosmetic issues on the initial stages, you're videos are a godsend!

you are my hero Jeff! you make all of your content engaging, easy to follow, clear and concise. I'm an apprentice plumber and I know your tips and tricks will help me to one day create a business that will blow the competition out of the water. Every service plumber I know at best cuts a "neat" hole in drywall or at worst smashes and pulls at the drywall then leaves it to the customers to figure out. countless customers I've had to leave with a hole in their wall or ceiling would have been happy to pay the same hourly rate to have the hole covered properly rather than have to find another company or individual to finish the job.
Cutting the drywall from the rear is a great tip, I have a couple of repairs I've been putting off, now I feel confident, great info keep up the tips your a wealth of knowledge

I just bought dry walls and started setting them up this week. I’ve never searched it online, somehow this video got recommended to me. THEY’RE LISTENING!
Yup. You actually give them permission to do so when you download the app. They say it's to better help you, but it's more of an info cropping and selling thing.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My girls and i will shortly be purchasing a fixer upper. So you are a timely man. May the true God bless you and yours

Great job Jeff, love learning the right way.
Will those laminating screws work on new sheetrock > popcorn > plaster/lathe ?
I have been asking my boyfriend for months to fix the holes in the bathroom so i could repaint. Never happened. So i decided to do it myself. I know nothing about drywall and he in not so many words said id never be able to make it look good enough that it wouldn’t be noticed. Thank god i found you. After watching i pretty much think i am a pro drywall person and these holes will be patched up and look professional as hell. Im so confident that ill be. Video taping it just in case my bf says i cheated and hired someone. Ill let tou know but man you were heaven sent.

I’m a 76yr old female tired of hearing how no one wants to do small jobs. Your tutoring was enlightening & very enjoyable. I’m ready to do my own repairs. Thank you so much. I have subscribed ❤
God bless your Charlotte.
68 here and ditto! Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm 69 & gonna do the same...I've done some before ...now i'm gonna get my gear and do it myself...Thank u ..."Sir Helper Man"
No one wants to do it because in your mind what he did is worth less then 10 dollars because it took him less then 10 min.
I so appreciate these videos. I'm 62, can't find anyone these days reliable enough to do the work for you...learning to do myself.

U probably know now but cheap plastic on floors when you’re down roll up and toss lots of hours saved there’
2 if u spray the ceiling with water and wait a few mins it falls off with a quick pass’
Don’t do those things and u will waste hours and hours’
yeah tried that trick in a room. problem was the textured ceiling wasn't that well adhered to the ceiling and a 50 lb sheet of sheet rock came down along with the textured ceiling. one way to get textured ceiling off the ceiling! fortunately no one was in the room when it happened but it scared the ba-jeebers out of my wife and me! will spend hours & hours scraping and breathing the dust and clean up the blooming mess before I try that "trick" again.
Your teaching style, your personality, you're so awesome. Thank you!!!

Life changer, never seen that California patch before, no telling how many times, I've screwed paint sticks to the wall from the back and cut a piece and screwed it to the paint sticks. THAT looks so flipping simple.
Great stuff for simple stuff.
Nothing wrong with 1X2 backing. Paint sicks not so much as they split so easy and then the screw can't get the bite it needs.
I use 1x4's as backing. 20 minute mud and a hair dryer. Easy money
Only use the california patch on small plug side holes like this. Anything bigger than say a 4 inches should have backing.

You can do it!
