I left the natural hair community because it became toxic, I diy-ed my micro locs and am not apart of any loc community. I am part of the doing me community cause God knows the Internet can be such a toxic place!
Not all head can carry 400 locs! My 8 yo daughter has 367 locs and I watched her consultant tying herself in knots trying to squeeze 400 locs on her head! She was all type of apologetic for not being able to reach that number 😳, I was confused because my baby looked amazing with a very full head of locs! Yeah the community is toxic even to their own!
That pressure is sad and ridiculous! Everyone's head is different. Everyone's hairline can be different. And a child's head will still grow. And people's hair sheds... what's with people?
You should create your own group, that promotes positivity and encouragement for people in the sisterlock community. Make sure to implement rules regarding negativity, and remove those who dont adhere to your rules from the group.
You literally made my day. 5 yrs locked; grid is off, locs aren't as uniformed as they were when I started but I LOVE MY LOC'S!!! ✊🏽 Hair freedom is what's its about sis. Thank you for this video 🥰
I had SL long before they bcme popular, and there was NO social media. I lived in NY and in the rare instance that I ran into another woman that had SL, we could just call out the name of our consultant and laugh: we were all seeing the same person 😅 She got us all together once for a "meet up". We marveled at how different locs looked on different heads, and at how gorgeous we all were.
This is all news to me. Maybe I don’t pay attention but I just love locs in general. Big, small, micro, grid no grid 🤷🏾♀️ It’s hair, and it’s your choice of expression. Rock your locs and keep it moving while ignoring any negativity.
Yes, me too. I wasn't aware this was a thing! My loctician made mine bigger for me, because I wasn't sitting that long! I used to get microbraids a lot.
Isn't it funny? No matter the group...some people will always seek to make themselves "elite". I cannot figure it out. Yet historically we have perpetuated this trend. Culturally...socially... racially....economically....color wise.. familial legacy. Perhaps it's human nature to want to "one up" each other. Regarding the "sisterlocks sisterhood" it is especially sad and unseemly. This hair journey has been a collective long arduous trek. Just as we finally embrace our own innate beauty almost immediately we "muddy" it with negative elitism. In the words of the late great Al Jerraux..."We're in this love together. So let's behave accordingly.
I just got mine about a week ago and i REFUSE to join any groups for this reason. My loctician and i were talking about these things and i refuse to let anybody ruin this journey for me. Lol...
@@jacquelinehenderson6042 you be blessed as well. I was not for the mess when I first got mine a year ago. Lol. I STILL haven't joined any SL groups. I follow a few SL appreciation IG pages, but that's it.
Michelle M Lol I had the same thought!! - but it was after I had already quit the groups. I think definitely they could’ve benefitted from hearing about themselves 😂
A few would see it, but most wouldn't because the group admins would quickly remove it. I think posting on YT is best. I'm researching if I want sisterlocs or microlocs. I'm definitely leaning towards microlocs.
@@MichieKy If I had known about microlocs before getting Sisterlocs I would have saved myself some $$ and went that route. If installed properly they are and look just as good. In the past I suffered with alopecia and now I have thin fine hair. I have less than 300 Sisterlocs installed by a licensed Sisterloc consultant. However, she was a beautician first for many years first. So she did what was best for MY scalp and hair and I am very pleased. I still could have saved a lot of money getting microlocs though, just saying=) My recommendation is tesearch them both and make the best decision for your hair, lifestyle and budget. Both are beautiful! My two cents lol
This is CRAZY. I had no idea this was going on. 2 separate women asked me how many locks I had and I thought it an odd question both times. I honestly never even thought to count them nor will I ever count them. Why does everything have to be some weird competition?
I think most peoples locations tell them how many they have, but I agree if mine doesn’t tell me I’m not counting. I’m also not asking her to count them because I feel like that’s a crazy ass request lol!!!
I totally agree I have 397 and feel the same way. After I paid 1600 dollars WTF you mean I don't have sisterlocks. I found my location on the sisterlock website...🤔🥺🤬🤯
I have 675 Sisterlocks. What is important at the end of the day is if you are happy with your results. Mine were installed by a Certified Trainee. My grid is not perfect and some locks are larger. I’m excited about the journey. I am not looking for perfection but what’s perfect and satisfactory to me ❣️
Precious Love I’m sure your locs are beautiful! You said it wonderfully, because truthfully, there’s no such thing as perfection. All that matters is that your locs are perfect and satisfactory to you. ❤️
Just remember that saying "what someone else thinks about me is none of my business" If you're happy then you're living you're best life. You're gorgeous, but I enjoyed hearing your heart speak❤
lark làrkannon That’s a wonderful saying. Worrying about what other people think is a recipe for disaster and unhappiness. Who has time to be unhappy? Life is so short. Thank you much for listening! 😊❤️
There is are 2 wonderfully supportive groups on Facebook: I belong to both and even though I have self installed and maintained micro locks though have been so encouraging to me. Give them a try! m.facebook.com/groups/1135568233301646?view=permalink&id=1357823281076139 m.facebook.com/groups/159153454761680?view=permalink&id=497459477597741
Like me with 375, I just keep on struttin". I truly didn't know the number meant anything. I had a SL consultant put them in, far as I'm concerned, that's what I have.
I can imagine that with this lockdown, those same women have to combine their locks just to make sure they don't lose their hair and they'll be humbled by the experience.
I lost so many locs. I have decided to cut them off and start new locs with 2 strand twist. This time, I will maintain them myself. Good bye sisterslocks
To he honest with you. I love it when small, micro locs are not the same size. When there's variation in loc size, it looks like there's more texture and frankly, it looks more natural. I also don't care for the grid. Your locs are very tiny. Can you imagine having 100 more of them? Every head is different. No matter where you go, there's always a group of people with low self esteem who try to bring others down to where they themselves are. I'm so glad that you recognized that and got out. African Americans, especially, know what it feels like to be put down or considered to be "not as good as" someone else because of skin color, body shape/size, lip size, etc. So now that we're trying to move on from that here we go again with loc number and size. Insecure, petty and mean.
I agree. I love my babies and I love that everyone of them has its own style and flair. My babies are disrespectful, beautiful, and none are like the others😍🥰
I agree! I have microlocs with size variation throughout. I have a grid. It's imperfect and unique. I created it and am proud of it. It makes me take pride in my DIY locks. So no one can tell me what's right or wrong because I created my garden.
@@lovelovevon4316 same I micro loc'd my hair about 3 months ago there is variation in size all throughout my hair and I love every single one and I know as they continue to grow and gain length they'll be amazing and unique in their own right . Diy-ers need our own community where we uplift and promote locs for what they are perfectly imperfect!..
Girl I don’t even know what I have on my head now. Am doing my hair myself as I was told that I didn’t have SL anymore. I don’t care about grid and all. I just have Shay Locs😂😂😂😂
That “I paid more for my locs” is a wasteful consumer. In our community- the black one-generally speaking the notion of flaunting wealth in things that depreciate in value is common. But a those who know better know you research and find the best value between quality and cost.
Simone Johnson you’re absolutely right, sis! “You do not have sisterlocks” literally had me losing sleep for daysss lol. People don’t realize how impactful that statement is.
Not surprised, our women are constantly tearing each other down across the board. Then get upset when other people tear us down as well. Good luck on your journey hunny
Hi !! I'm sisterlocks consultant and I agree with what you say, people are obsessed with the number of locks... I don't put the number of locks anymore of my clients (on my social media) and don't count them either. Just love the results. I have 350 ish sisterlocks with a little head and not a lot density. I'm in love with my hair. Thanks for sharing 😉
I recently started looking into sisterlocks because my mother wanted me to do her hair. Now, I'm not a certified consultant but I figured I've been braiding since 9 yrs old, licensed cosmetologist, certified Trichologist & natural hair consultant so it shouldn't be a problem... I did notice ALL the above while doing my research/browsing and experienced some of what you mentioned. I didn't let it deter me because I know & understand my skill level. Btw, my mom's hair is turning out beautiful & I'm finishing tomorrow, Yayyyyy!!! 🤗 However, she will NOT have 400+ locks because of thinning issues she has contributed to. However, her hair will be healthier & less stressed (due to her over manipulation) and that's what's more important to me. So, thanks for the positive vibes🤗
Agree with this post!! I joined a SL group on FB. I asked a few questions and my goodness the responses were so rude in my opinion to me and about my certified consultant. After I read their comments, I deleted/unfollowed that group. Kinda like the natural hair community. If it’s not their way, it’s wrong. Smh!! Crazy people lol❤️
I'm glad u shut out the noise...believe me, it's not just the sister loc community...its the loc community period...everyone has their own set ideas and beliefs and that's fine...having tough skin is so imperative...when I 1st started my journey, I was told I should have shaved my head because my hair was ugly...I was told all kinds of madness...by many different people. .including my stylist...I started my journey for a cultural and religious purpose...not for a fashion purpose, and that's what I had to keep reminding myself of every time someone had something negative to say. Keep pushing and enjoy the journey. . It's beautiful!
the donut chronicles It’s so upsetting to hear that people said stuff like that to you when you started your journey! I’m glad that you were able to push through all of that and continue your journey.... I think that’s kind of the beautiful thing about locs- they teach you virtues like patience, confidence, and not worrying about what others have to say. ❤️ thank you for commenting!!
As someone who just got sister locks installed 1 month ago, thank you for this post. I'm looking on different pages for support and ideas and I have seen some of the comments you mentioned on different pages.
Absolutely I did the same thing 4 years ago! I love positivity and it’s best to get out so negativity does not creep in! Your sister locs are beautiful and I find all versions of locs beautiful. Stay blessed!! 😊💕
I am so grateful that you posted this video I am going to have my Establishment done next month and I’ve already sense the issues that you’ve addressed in this video, I pondered between Sisterlock and Microlocks for over a year During my research, I chose sisterlocks because I want to the versatility, I did not choose it to become part of any”fraternity or Sorority.” I love locks of all shapes, sizes and length especially coming from the Caribbean what you see so much diversity in locks. At the end of the day the common denominator is that mostly women and men of colour get our hair done like this, it becomes an extension of who we are and to put down another woman or man because you’re not satisfied with the number of locks and I hair it’s self deprecating.
Guuurrrrrllll.... Prior to self installing my miniature locs... I did research on Sisterlocks. I watched Sisterlocks videos, and I specifically watched the videos of women in the Sisterlocks community and their attitudes towards other forms of small locs ( which has frequently been called step-Sisterlocks ). Because of the elitist mentality and separatist attitude, I decided against Sisterlocks altogether. Instead, I installed my own locs. And the most hilarious thing about it is... women that I see in person that have Sisterlocks... Do. Not. Know. The. Difference!!! I have been loc’d for 3.5 years now, and I absolutely love being in complete control of my re-tightening schedule and not having to deal with the mental drain of socializing with people who look down on other loc’d sisters because they don’t have a Sisterlocks certificate.
Agree with you. Not everyone have the same head size and same type of hair and definitely will not have the same amount of locs. I am just glad that we as in all sisters, are wearing our own hair and being natural. Love the natural look of sisters. Love that we are making a move to better ourselves. I really hate you had to experience the negativity in those groups. So sorry for that. Glad you have moved on from it. Keep posting videos of your progress. I am literally waiting for my certified consultant to arrive to start on my hair.
Just got my sisterlocks 2/23/21 and I love them! I have fine low density hair and I have 257 sisterlocks...they're gorgeous! My consultant has done over 200 installations so I trust her more than the sisterlocks community LOL. I will not be joining the SL Facebook pages. Thank you so much for this video.💜
I’m so glad I ran into this video, I’m a newly trainee only 4month in, and I was discouraged by some of the video I listened to, I might not have all my grids as perfect as there’s but my clients and people like you keeps me going I know there’re things that will discourage you but I lost a client to a sisterlock consultant because of what she said to a client, consultant is sometimes who we as trainee look to not for them to tear you down😩but I look at it as that wasn’t my client anyway, we all have to crawl before we can walk, I thank you for your encouraging message you have help someone today, be bless
There are those that get so messed up when someone tells them that the hundreds of Locs that were installed by someone else isn’t Sisterlocks that they get them cutoff and reestablished. They are so devastated, which is just nuts!! If they look good, who cares. I really wish you had put this video on those SL pages (as a drop the mic move). There are so many that need to hear this, and that it’s alright.
Shout out to you and your stand against the madness. There is always something separating us as a community, dumb menial stuff at that. Loved the point that locs are meant to free us. You got it right, hopefully they will one day.
Preach! I relate to everything you said. Especially the part about people glorifying the number of locs. Yours are beautiful and very flattering on you. My hair is a very different texture. My sisterlocks look much bigger than yours but I probably have a larger number of them. I used to feel really insecure about the size of my locs because of the way people act like all sisterlocks should be insanely tiny. It's really messed up that seemingly regardless of the number, there's this pressure to meet some imaginary standard of what sisterlocks look like. All of ours are beautiful and unique.
It's sad to know that even in the Sistalocks Community that there is still "typing" going on similar to the "natural hair Community." When does it stop? Can the journey be embraced minus the criticism, discrimination & negativity. Kudos to you for calling out the madness!
I am so glad you made this video. I am researching and considering starting sister locks. I am very turned off immediately at the country club mentality and feeling like I would be joining the mean girls table in the high school lunchroom. We are such a beautiful array of women. I do not want to become part of any community that promotes division. While I appreciate entrepreneurial spirit and pride in craft, it should not be used as a hierarchy to down trot outliers. Imitation is truly the greatest compliment. This journey should be one of freedom and acceptance of ones self and others.
Amen! Shouldn’t we just be proud that black women are now embracing natural hair. I always say, I don’t need another woman measuring my “naturalness” with their makeup, dye and everything else.... let’s just be happy to be alive and willing to be unbothered by superficial things like hair. 💙
Actually you should have at least 400 SL, if it's done by a certified SL consultant for a full set of beautiful locks. If they gave you less they didn't follow the protocol. They are still SL Because of the Grid, that's what make them SL' the grid the number is what they are told to put in each clients head. Your SL are very beautiful. Don't take them DOWN, enjoy your journey..
I have 350 very tiny sisterlocks. My hair is fine and thin all done by a certified consultant. They look beautiful and are full right now at 4 months. There is no way in hell anyone can tell me different! Our hair texture is different to include the size of our heads. People get over your self-righteous 'I have more than 350 sisterlocks' self! This is foolish. We all are different and beautiful. Root yourself in love to all.
Yes I agree with @Eunice Turner my hair is fine and mine were done by a certified sisterlocks consultant and I have under 400 locks. I stopped being a part of online groups as well because they were making me question the hair that I had fallen in love with so I just said enough is enough and kept on loving my hair 😍
Not true Barbie Rae some ppl hair is too fine or they may hv hair loss . I had a client who was appt by Dr Cornwell she has under 300 . I had to work with what I had & she has a kid size head so all that combined made her loc count less ... I agree with the video the pages are toxic & I advise my clients against it because it’s a competition on there . Everyone Journey is different & no 2 ppl hair will look the same 🤷🏽♀️
The things that you mentioned are the reason that I did not get "Sisterlocks." Although my loctitian is a certified Sisterlocks consultant, I have micro locks installed. My grid is a a little different that the straight sisterlocks grid and I LOVE IT! My consultant is leaving the community as well. Her given reasons are that many consultants are not cosmetologists and are not trained to take care of the scalp and other hair issues that are not addressed in any Sisterlocks class. She also doesn't like the sisterlocks tool. At any rate, She installs the number of locs that are appropriate for your hair texture, health, and density, and although I counted my locs, not once has she ever. I am 5 months loc'ed and when people approach me or comment about my Sisterlock I am happy to inform them that I have microlocs.
It’s the level of nastiness and unprofessionalism from the Sisterlocks community for me first of finding a consultant was super hard due to the fact of I won’t give my money to anyone that I see is just working for the money and they be rube as a hell this video made me aware of the community before I got them but now that I am in the community I see what you were saying💜 We need to be more kinder to each other black women and start tearing each other down
Yes. My locs are far from traditional, I twisted my hair and I interlock it every four weeks. The community is so exclusive and strongheaded that I feel as though I can't even call them sisterlocks. Everytime someone asks me, "Wow do you have sisterlocks?" I feel the need to provide my entire backstory on my hair.
Good on you for voicing this! I'm newly micro locced and I have so much love and new love for all locs! This 'mean girl' type bickering reminds me of the foolery of hair typing arguments among loose naturals. All in all it screams insecurity to me. As you said we should be uplifting each other in this journey with our hair. Hopefully more people will come to realize this. Love to you ❤
I apologize the negativity you experienced in the community. So sad ad unnecessary!!! I'm contemplating on getting sisterlocs as well. I love the volume of your locs. Not to thin or thick. As long as you're happy who cares.??!! Continue to be positive and ignore the noise. Sisters, we've got to do better!!
I did my own microlocs 553 of them, everyone thinks they are sisterlocks, I am in the groups including sisterlocks groups cause I needed advise as a starter, I take what feeds me and leave the rest...this world has lots of hurt people sometimes it's their issues they project and nothing to do with anybody else
I don’t care what they say! I’m doing my own sister locks and I’m confident in the skin I’m in and what I wear. I don’t have them to or doing them to impress the next person. They can think what they want! You have made valid points so for those reasons alone I won’t be joining and of those groups
All these things could also be said for the loose hair natural hair community. Texturism is a HIGH-KEY problem there. You'll never see proper representation on youtube for anything higher than 3c, even though the majority of black people have 4b and 4c hair. People want to act like looser curl patterns are the only way to make natural hair look "aesthetic". It's annoying and toxic asf and a big reason for why I left the loose natural hair community and transitioned to having locs.
@@imdinma9826 But even when I "paid attention" to the 4c hair tutorials (because my hair is 4b/4c), I still got my recommendations flooded with 3a-3c hair vloggers and they would spam my feed. I wasn't interested in that and it didn't suit my interests. Not to mention loose natural hair RUclipsrs overall tend to be unhelpful and many of there tutorials were half-assed. I don't have the time to waste to listen to a video where they only show you how to do one twist of hair then timelapse the rest
You have some valid points! I wouldn’t put this on the whole community but there are individuals in the community that will make others feel like their locs are lacking and that’s never acceptable.
I have sisterlocks, but I never being in a sisterlocks community. I love my hair and I always praise anyone with locs. I love yours and I wish we could have met earlier. I pray 🙏🏽 whatever decision you make that it make you happy because at the end of the day..... it's your hair boo ❤️Love it and rock it🌺🤗❤️
I BEEN QUIT THOSE SELF CENTERING MY SISTERLOC HAIR IS BETTER THAN YOURS GROUP. I am me all by myself and I can't stand to be badgered with negativity or be in an orbit that carries negativity. I think ALL BLACK WOMEN ARE ABSOLUTLEY BEAUTIFUL WHETHER U HAVE LOCS OR NOT and it doesn't matter the number or type of loc u have THIS IS WHAT MAKES US ALL DIFFRENT AS INDIVIDUALS. WHEN WE START LEARNING TO LOVE GOD AND THEN LOVE OURSELVES FIRST THERE WILL BE NO ROOM TO HATE ON ANYONE ELSE..THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.❤❤❤❤❤
Im a Sisterlock consultant and the first thing I tell my ladies is your locs are your locs, your journey is your journey and to please get out of your head 450 to 500 locks. You're going to get what your hair's density and head size allows. You cannot imagine how many transfer clients I have received because of a rude consultant. I want nothing but positive vibes and women feeling beautiful around me. The only time I want to know how many locs you have is to estimate how long its going to take me to retight... period 🤣🤣
4:50 Tell me about it. I did DIY microlocks and I am LOVING them but I've been looking for someone to do reties. I called ONE SL consultant so far and she was SO rude. She kept laughing when I told her I did them myself and used a 4 point rotation (she acted as if a 4 point rotation was somehow wrong and unheard of even though interlockers have been using it for years), she referred to my hair as "... whatever you have on your head", and repeatedly told me I didn't have sisterlocks even though I knew that already- to the point that I had to say "I dont CARE if they are sisterlocks or not". After seeing my hair in pictures, she begrudgingly said I did alright and said she'd schedule with me, but I feel like I'd just be laughed at continuously if went to her. I want to go to someone who is knowledgeable about sisterlocks AND microlocks. I feel like she just wanted sisterlocks to be the ONLY way someone can have nice, smaller locs.
I got my Sisterlocks in Nov 2019, so I’m 3 months in and my establishment was done by a brand ambassador and she is amazing. But I never once thought of joining a Sisterlocks online community because I don’t care what other people think, it seems as if you were asking for outside criticism from people you don’t know and shouldn’t care what there opinion is, so for that I’m glad you are no longer part of those communities ( communities of hate). You hair is beautiful and I can’t wait to see what your journey brings.
cotennis540 Thank you so much 😊 I think your avoidance of the online Sisterlocks community was an excellent choice. Lately, I feel like the online groups do more harm than good. People post pictures in these groups hoping for support and advice and are instead met with criticism. It’s a shame. Thank you for watching!
I heard the average is anywhere between 250-800🤷🏾♀️It’s different for everyone depending on how they get their sister locks ! That’s crazy I never thought the online community was that bad...but then again I never joined any because social network is nothing like it use to be😃Like there’s no need for beauty standards in locks!😒people get locks because the uniqueness in everyone’s head! Even if you have the SAME EXACT grid and amount of locks as someone next to you? Your heads will look COMPLETELY different in the future when they 100% lock because people’s head lock and do things and processes differently!
I won’t join the group if that’s the culture. I am all about positivity, encouragement, and uplifting my melanin sisters. We are beautifully and wonderfully made.👏🏾👏🏾💃🏾💃🏾💯😘
Enjoy your Journey love. I’m a consultant trainee and I am not in any social group. I live and let live. But we are not taught that in the classes. Sisterlocks ™️ is not meant to be stressful.
it's always sad when something that's supposedly freeing turns out to be what people ran away from. people run from concepts of beauty and standard, and then another standard and in-out group is created. the natural hair community is no different. but it's a good thing to note when something is silly, and not fall prey to it. if you like what you have, that's great. if someone else thinks you should have something different, then that person's opinion doesn't matter. the people who are supportive, and first and foremost yourself, are all that matters for what you do with your hair journey. thanks for talking about this :)
I hear you. I'm sending you a hug. 🤗 I don't have 400 Sisterlocks either and I self maintain AND I didn't get trained. 😂 But girl...I don't care. I know what I have, why I did it, and I love my decision.
Essence of Me thank you 🤗🤗! It can be hard out here with less than 400 Sisterlocks lol. People always have something to say! But I must admit that I can’t imagine having any more locs on my head now.. especially since I plan to self-maintain eventually.
a.michelle Me too! I still see my consultant annually and I thank her. I have just the right number so people recognize that they’re SLs. But I can maintain without issues. Have fun on your journey. I’m subbed so I can watch. 🥰
Essence of Me I am about to make the leap of self retying. Your comment was heaven sent for me. As long as I like them....yes honey. Two snaps and 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Tamaria Lakayye 😂 That’s really what they do. Just sprinkle it around ALL OVER the place. I feel much better having cut them out!! Btw I LOVE your channel. You were one of the sisterlockers I watched before I got my establishment and started my channel! 💕
I agree with you 99%. Points 2 and 3 you are SPOT on. Unfortunately with point 1 (and it irks my soul to the damn core) is that Sisterlocks normally range from 400-700 locs on your head. I’m not in any Sisterlocks group for this reason. You are beautiful and so are your locs
Honey I’m subscribing to you and I thank you. I agree with you 100%. I don’t have sisterlocs but I did install microtwists and I have 477. I was on social media in sisterloc and microlocs groups and I witnessed the same thing. No I didn’t address my irritation in the group because to be honest, I could care less what others think or how others feel. I was there for encouragement and when I noticed the rudeness and subtle shade I no longer felt encouraged. I also felt no need to discuss my feelings or to try to point out the wrong. There have been many people in these groups who have said something similar to what you said here. It really doesn’t change the mindset of the masses. I just decided, like you, to seek positivity and I dropped them all. Now, I subscribe only to those that I feel have the communities best interest at heart. I appreciate your words and I appreciate you.
Thank you for speaking out. The saddest part, the true reason and history of locs have become about styles as oppose to it's TRUE meaning that cannot be found on the internet. Neither did I think I'd see the day the cost of locs would be so extreme.
Thank you for the positivity. I agree with one of the other comments when they said you should have posted this message in the other groups before you left. I really appreciate this message! You have a new subscriber.
I find this in any community online. That’s why I deleted my IG. People are bold on social media and will say things online that they would never say to a persons face. There’s bad and there’s good everywhere. When someone says something I don’t agree with I keep it moving. No need to respond or get mad.
I know this is an older video, but thank you for this video. I just decided to commit to sisterlocks, and this video was positive and motivating for me. Thank j you for caring for others feelings. ❤️
When I first hit my sister Loc established . I was told by a complete stranger to stay away from groups it’s like A cult. And I followed her word and just do me. It’s been 2+years. I’m just here to look at different styles. And FYI My Loc technician asked if I wanted to know how many likes I had I said no and I don’t care to further discuss it. Everyone’s locked journey is their own journey
I am going to be honest. I had a full head of sister locs and never counted and when someone asked me how many do you have, I said I didn’t know and don’t care as long as my hair was healthy and now I transitioned my sister locks to traditional locs, my hair is still healthy and I still kept my length. I have always embraced my hair and didn’t care about numbers because that is all this world cares about in general are numbers.
I never joined the sisterhood community and I'm enjoying my locs. I git my locs installed because I wanted my God to be a neat as possible. My location was certified and gave me the introduction welcome kit to sister locs. I had already made up in my mind that I was going to do my own sister locs, so I watched the good bad and ugly about sister locs. I decided I was ready after 3 yrs of looking into what I felt was a commitment to grow my hair in the 4 yrs. It's going 👍 great. Thanks for sharing.
Like a month ago I have found out about this hairstyle before I did not even know it’s exist. So, I liked it and start doing my own hair , just so easy to do it but takes a long time . We have the time now .
Thanks for your words of encouragement I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my hair and what's going to be better for me &my hair Continue to stand Strong God Bless You🙏🏽
Congrats on leaving. Glad I'm not a part of any. Happy to have sisterlocks but definitely not for any of those reasons. Just being happy with myself...low daily maintenance.
I plan on getting sisterlocs or traditional.. I didn’t know that those particular groups can be so mean but I believe you because theirs so many people that don’t support one another’s journey. Best to you and yes it’s always good to unfollow negativity so good for you . 🙌🏽👏🏽👏🏽
"The plucked chicken look"😂😂😂😂😂 I have my consultation appointment coming up and I am so worried about how I am going to end up looking the first year. I know in the long run the grid will be less noticeable and my hair will thicken up but I am seriously frightened.
I wanted a lot of locs intitally and ended up with a lil over 500. It’s all fun and games to you have to self-retighten, I’ve thought about combining so much. On another note I think some people use numbers and what not cuz some people do be scamming out here but you are right
tlovespeaksss 500 locs! Whew! I’m sure your self-retightenings are exhausting, but your hair is so beautiful and full! 🤩😍 there are pros and cons to everything I guess.
Thank you for this video. I am getting my sisterlocks in three days and I have been a little worried about how many locks I would have and how they will look on me. Thanks to you, I no longer care!
I don't have sisterlocs. I just have regular locs. I confess that I never really paid specific attention to the sisterloc community, but I found this video to be interesting, and educational about the issues that may be in that specific part in the community. I'm glad you left those groups; it sounded like they were not promoting positivity and just the all around connecting over your experience.
Hey, You look beautiful… spit out the negative and grasp the positive… I did my locks myself and I am so proud of the outcome… so I would probably be told that I don’t have sisterlocks as well… but I am happy with the outcome… and I do not have anything like 400 locks… but I like what I have… Be happy, you are awesome!!!
I left the natural hair community because it became toxic, I diy-ed my micro locs and am not apart of any loc community. I am part of the doing me community cause God knows the Internet can be such a toxic place!
miniimufin “part of the doing me community”. I LOVE that, sis. 🙌🏾 That’s the community we should all aspire to be apart of.
Diy-er loc'd queen right here as well...
"Doing Me Community" 🎉💕💜💕
Amen !!! DO YOUUUU NO MATTER WHAT!!! ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾❤🖤💚
Right we are called to be separate from this world anyways.
Make sure to implement rules regarding negativity, and remove those who dont adhere to your rules from the group.
haironpoint I love this idea!! Maybe that’s in my future 💕
I agree
Great idea
Yes! That would be great.
@@ambyressenceDoing another deepfake and artificial voice of you.
You literally made my day. 5 yrs locked; grid is off, locs aren't as uniformed as they were when I started but I LOVE MY LOC'S!!! ✊🏽 Hair freedom is what's its about sis. Thank you for this video 🥰
Yeah. Hair freedom. That's it
Sisterlocks are not supposed to be one uniformed size..if someone led you to that belief...they were mistaken.
I had SL long before they bcme popular, and there was NO social media. I lived in NY and in the rare instance that I ran into another woman that had SL, we could just call out the name of our consultant and laugh: we were all seeing the same person 😅
She got us all together once for a "meet up". We marveled at how different locs looked on different heads, and at how gorgeous we all were.
Spot on!
Same here.
Me too. Marcia Moore did mine in the '90s in NYC.
@@rob_cd is she still living?
This is all news to me. Maybe I don’t pay attention but I just love locs in general. Big, small, micro, grid no grid 🤷🏾♀️ It’s hair, and it’s your choice of expression. Rock your locs and keep it moving while ignoring any negativity.
Me too! This is the first I'm hearing that there are exclusive groups based on hairstyle!
Right...so sad and toxic
I'm always baffled by the deep need to be better, greater, the elite. Is it human nature or has human created that culture/nature? SMH
Very well said!
@@progress2success317 it is human nature.
I just got mine about a week ago and i REFUSE to join any groups for this reason. My loctician and i were talking about these things and i refuse to let anybody ruin this journey for me. Lol...
I agree
Do you have 400 locs
😂 Hope you see the humor
It's all love be blessed
@@jacquelinehenderson6042 you be blessed as well. I was not for the mess when I first got mine a year ago. Lol. I STILL haven't joined any SL groups. I follow a few SL appreciation IG pages, but that's it.
Not to be messy but you should have posted this video in the groups before you quit lol. They all need to hear this! Great points.

As well they should. Well said!
DIY’er here! Great video! We need to do BETTER as a Black Community of Woman and Men, PERIODT!!
That’s why I started my own locs. Free and beautiful and all mine.
Same! 😁
I totally agree I have 397 and feel the same way. After I paid 1600 dollars WTF you mean I don't have sisterlocks. I found my location on the sisterlock website...🤔🥺🤬🤯
$1600! Damn! You hair must have been really long.
Really? They told me 350 or more and I just took the class. It depends on hair density, type, etc. I have not had this experience ...thank goodness...

I have seen some ladies with under 400 sisterlocks and their hair is gorgeous. I agree with everything you said. Hang in there sis.
Marcia M Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
@queenbeethatme100 and if they're not trained, then they aren't real sisterlocks anymore, by their own logic 🤷🏾♀️
I lost so many locs. I have decided to cut them off and start new locs with 2 strand twist. This time, I will maintain them myself. Good bye sisterslocks
It’s gatekeeping! Glad that you quit. Who would’ve thought that such a community would be toxic! Your sister locs are gorgeous
Yep. Gatekeeping 101.
Insecure, petty and mean.
raineynight Preach!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I agree. I love my babies and I love that everyone of them has its own style and flair. My babies are disrespectful, beautiful, and none are like the others😍🥰
I agree locs are cultural for us blacks so lets embrace them despite the different forms
“Sprinkling that phrase out like seasoning on chicken.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣
Girl I don’t even know what I have on my head now. Am doing my hair myself as I was told that I didn’t have SL anymore. I don’t care about grid and all. I just have Shay Locs😂😂😂😂
That “I paid more for my locs” is a wasteful consumer. In our community- the black one-generally speaking the notion of flaunting wealth in things that depreciate in value is common. But a those who know better know you research and find the best value between quality and cost.
“You do not have sisterlocks” had me second guessing if I have sisterlocks lol. The community can be mean. It’s disturbing.
I've never been in a sisterlocks group. Thanks for the heads up.
This is so bad. That’s why I don’t get in all of that mess. I don’t have sisterlocks and i am loving my small locs. Great video.
Loc'd Biker thank you!! 😊 Your locs are amazing!
Jaye Mc. I’m so sorry you had that experience. The people in those groups are SO rude . I’m glad you deleted/unfollowed. Pay them NO attention! Lol 💛
I thought if you went to a SisterLoctician and they did their grid...that is what makes them SisterLocs
Your hair is beautiful! I think it looks nice and has so many styling potential.
P Lee Thank you so much! 🤗
I can't even believe these issues exist. Give us all free
So glad you quit those groups! Build your own Sisterlocks community through positivity and building each other up. 💜
Milana Dover 🧡💛 I loveee this idea of a new Sisterlocks community full of positivity!
Great idea. You should start a positive group
@@ambyressence I definitely appreciate it...thank you 🤗
As someone who just got sister locks installed 1 month ago, thank you for this post.
I am so grateful that you posted this video I am going to have my Establishment done next month and I’ve already sense the issues that you’ve addressed in this video, I pondered between Sisterlock and Microlocks for over a year
During my research, I chose sisterlocks because I want to the versatility, I did not choose it to become part of any”fraternity or Sorority.”
I love locks of all shapes, sizes and length especially coming from the Caribbean what you see so much diversity in locks.
"Like its seasoning on chicken" LOL...tell them SIS! I'm about to combine mine and drop the groups. It's so negative and who CARES.
Hey!! I just got mine done today! I also have fine/thin hair..and I'm a Capricorn:-D
Omg sameee
I’m so glad I ran into this video, I’m a newly trainee only 4month in, and I was discouraged by some of the video I listened to, I might not have all my grids as perfect as there’s but my clients and people like you keeps me going I know there’re things that will discourage you but I lost a client to a sisterlock consultant because of what she said to a client, consultant is sometimes who we as trainee look to not for them to tear you down😩but I look at it as that wasn’t my client anyway, we all have to crawl before we can walk, I thank you for your encouraging message you have help someone today, be bless
Preach sister preach!!!!! Start your own thing a Community of love.
A W thank you Queen! ❤️
The amount of Sisterlocks is actually between 200 to 600. The average is just that an average. You can have 250 locks and still have Sisterlocks
What about ppl w/ more than 600?
Everyone Journey is different & no 2 ppl hair will look the same 🤷🏽♀️
They can be right culty. Girl I pay them no mind
Thank you for saying what I feel.
I completely understand and what you're ultimately describing is people, whether or not they have locs. Beautiful locs!
There are a ton on 4a, 4b and 4c hair types on RUclips.
@@jaeshasway Not really. Alot of those people are just 3c people claiming to be 4a/4b for the clout.
@@gothbat676 there are. It just boils down to what you choose to pay attention to.
@@gothbat676 you’re right. Idk what they’re on. For every 4B/4C YTer there’s 10 type 3/4a YTers mislabeling themselves.

I survive. I got when I started doing research about sister locks versus micro locks. It’s almost like a snobmess vibe
The only time I want to know how many locs you have is to estimate how long its going to take me to retight... period 🤣🤣
Amen, will be taking my sisterlock consultant training this weekend!
I hope there are other options than her in your area. You already know she's not a good vibe for you.
@@MissOtika Most definitely. I found another loctician and so far so good!
I agree with you, Michelle. I am happy that you are speaking out! Thank you for sharing!
Mary Walls Thank you for watching, Mary! 💕
April G Mckinley I agree! Sisterlocks is meant to be about freedom, not stress. Thank you for watching 💕
it's always sad when something that's supposedly freeing turns out to be what people ran away from. people run from concepts of beauty and standard, and then another standard and in-out group is created. the natural hair community is no different. but it's a good thing to note when something is silly, and not fall prey to it. if you like what you have, that's great. if someone else thinks you should have something different, then that person's opinion doesn't matter. the people who are supportive, and first and foremost yourself, are all that matters for what you do with your hair journey. thanks for talking about this :)
I've had people constantly tell me what kind of locks I have. Because it's more in between. GIRL I GET YOU
Essence of Me thank you! 😊 I’m going to keep up with your channel as well. Lots of great content on there!!
a.michelle 🥰
Essence of Me I am about to make the leap of self retying. Your comment was heaven sent for me. As long as I like them....yes honey. Two snaps and 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Lol spreading it around like it seasoning on chicken 😂 but good thing you cut them out!!!
MsPrincess8585 thank you so much for watching and commenting 💕💕😊
WOW! That is crazy. I am happy you stayed true to you.❤
Thank you for speaking out.
I quit too.. asked one question and folks were so mean. I left with joy
Your hair looks really nice! I wish someone with me get started.
Thank you for this video. It has made me confident that if I get locs, I will DIY them and continue following people like you.
Wow. I didn't realize it was that serious!!
I didn't know they have community lol 😆 😂 😅 🤣 I want to do my own locks
I completely agree. I left a long time ago because they come off very boujee.
People really count them😱 I didn't knowwww
Me: 71 locs, I got tired and made them two sizes up..
I definitely wasn't counting 😂🙂 anyways mine aren't permanent 🤣 4 month protective style
