You're funny. "Going to make this but I'm doing it my way" The actual pattern front piece only leaves a couple of inches open at the back and it eliminates the underarm problem you had. I do like the full skirt on your front piece. I put two buttons in the back for adjustability. I made it in an '80's floral duvet, it was supposed to be a practice it took so much longer than the 4 hours it was supposed to that I haven't done it again, yet, lol but I do wear it a lot

I'm a newbie quilter and my personal flavor of insanity is "my mom's 1980s sewing machine can't do a quarter inch seam so I'm just going to hand sew everything" so that gives me a lot of time to chill and watch other creatives' shenanigans. I also so subscribe to the equipment
Oh my god, I am so happy to find another person who does this. I have an allegedly perfectly functional sewing machine that's a hand me down from my mother who got it from her sister who bought it in the late 70s-early 80s. The times I have used it, it did eventually function but took a lot of time and frustration to get the stitches to...ya know, stitch stuff. So I've spent the last few years aggressively avoiding the sewing machine and making bags and stuffed animals and quilt-as-you-go blocks by hand, even though I know it is taking wayyyyyy longer than it could. 😂
I don't have a sewing room and I live with three other people. It's easier to just hand sew than get the dining room table cleaned off so I can set the sewing machine up for a few hours.
You know, they make 1/4” feet for a reason. And, you can always use your regular foot and just move the presser foot to the left a notch or two. Stop making excuses and go sew something!! (Speaking in my mom voice)😂
Unless you're quilting or bra making, why not just make a bigger seam allowance and then cut it down? Also, you and the other commenter might need to take your machines in to the shop for a tune up, it can do a world of good
I love that you use the basic sewing items! You sew on a budget that most of us can understand. I've been sewing for around 40 years (Thanks, Mom) and I still only have a sewing machine. No serger. When the choice came to buy a new sewing machine or a cheap serger, I went with a new sewing machine so I could have one set for knits/embroidery and the old one as my basics. That you sew with the basic equipment makes what you do so much more relatable and obtainable. Do I have a cutter matt? Yes. I lucked into it on clearance 25 years ago. I'm glad I did. Tip for that now is to check Office Supply stores for the best prices. It is the same type mat for paper or sewing.
As one of the rotary commenters, it was all in good fun. Quilters are equipment magpies, and we cut a lot more and mostly straight lines, so the rulers and mats help the accuracy.
You inspired me to get a little sewing machine and give it a go. Your “it’ll do”/“make do” attitude helped fight off my perfection gremlin and give me confidence! I hope that doesn’t change when you do buy all the fancy gear :P

An quick fix for the dress not opening is adding strings behind the pocket area and to the front panel sides about 6 or 8 inches from the waist. You'll have swooshability without tushability!
It has been fascinating watching your sewing process because I am so much the opposite. I have hundreds of patterns and trying to draft something myself generally makes me run in the opposite direction. I also tend to avoid knit because I never trusted that I could sew it and keep enough stretch. I might just have to find some knit though, because you've been inspiring me to try some new things. Happy stress is indeed a real thing. It's called eustress, and some experts think all stress is 'just stress'. But since there's 'distress', I agree with the experts that say eustress is a thing. So. I find hand-hemming peaceful. Give me a full length circle skirt and I'll just make up a 'hand-hemming' sewing bag and set it and the skirt on a small table beside my favourite comfortable chair. I'll get something peaceful to listen to, thread a needle, and get started. Therefore, for me, hand-hemming is eustress for me. Someone else reads 'hand-hemming a full length circle skirt' and something inside them just screamed at the idea at all. For them, hand-hemming is probably distressful. And you've just shown me a good way to make a bib/apron combo for people with limited ability. Basically making the front piece but not the back.
You know what I love so much about watching your videos? I love that you make these things for YOU! I just mean that you don’t have the need to follow a pattern exactly or that you don’t care if there’s a few extra seams or whatever. I love so much that you made the pieces fit on the one piece of fabric even if that required you to sew a few parts together. I have chronic health problems, so cutting squares and rectangles does take me days. I work at tortoise pace not hare pace. I'm working on a duvet quilt at the moment. I'm also working on my own version of the walkaway dress. I'm not a dress or skirt person. So I'm doing a two piece top and trousers wrap around style.

May I recommend to you the 5009 Women's Day magazine wrap-on play clothes pattern from 1951 that you can find as part of a like 5 piece reproduction pattern set as a remarkably excellent starting point for the trousers for said project? Fix the pockets, though, the stock pockets are not deep enough, but I've been remixing the trousers pattern all over the place and it's just a lot of fun.
You've reminded me that I want to make a reversible version of this, with pockets. Hoping you do that too. I keep liking and sharing your videos so you can get an overlocker, rolled hems on an overlocker are so neat and so fast!

Absolutely love the dress!!! As for finding inexpensive tools and equipment, you might want to consider estate sales. I was able to purchase an older Babylock cover stitch machine for $25 a few years ago and it works great! I've also obtained fabric, trims, notions, organizational tools from estate sales. And that's here in a small town in SW FL. I can only imagine what you'd find in LA! Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the new house!

I made it in cotton and had exactly the same problem with the bra showing at the side. I added panels under the arms and it all got a bit messy…. And yes, on the pattern the front skirt goes all the way round to meet at the back.
I'd been thinking about a knit version of the walk-away dress, so I'm inspired! I noticed that you have what looks like an inch difference between the edge of the skirt and the band. If you don't mind a little hand sewing, you can make the back (tied in the front) more adjustable by snipping off an inch on either side, re-inserting the ties, and then hand stitching closed (thus allowing you to tie it tighter or leave looser as desired). Good luck with the house closing!

I love this and definitely want to make this myself. The things that i would change would be to add a second tie to the front to stop it warping the waistband. Also to add some interfacing to the waistband for the same reason. Other than that, i agree with the changes you talked about at the end. I LOVE those sections as it is so helpful to see others mistakes and learn as a community 😊
WOW, another great dress. Don't fret about equipment. I sew everything by hand because I don't have a sewing machine. To be true, I have a 1955 treadle Singer machine, but it needs some repairs, so it's unusable. Electric machines are too fast for me!
I’m so glad you listened to my opinion about the sleeves, it’s nice to know you think of your viewers! I think even just adding a few inches to the front panel so it tends to fall behind your hips rather than in front would help a lot with the gaping. Dang physics.
As one of your new viewers I appreciate that you don't have a serger. I'm new-ish to sewing and this is making me want to try more. Seeing you sew knots without a serger gives me more hope that I can manage it - more useful than the channels that tend towards "and now we'll just run this through the serger"!
I’m fairly new to the channel too. I have high needs kids who need constant supervision, so I’m either too busy or too tired to sew much.😢 But I can watch videos of other people sewing! 😂 I’ve never been a fan of sewing knits, but I have a few pieces that I want to make into dresses eventually, I just need to decide what I’m making. And although I love following patterns, I almost never make a garment exactly following the pattern, I always change something.
Maybe you can get some tools you don't have 2d hand on Facebook market or something. Lots of older machines are still reliable and you can buy replacement blades for the rotary cutters so really it's the handle that's the "investment"

Just an idea... because when I first saw this dress I thought it was 2 peices could you make an interchangeable capsule wardrobe with a basic knit dress like your hensley knit dresses and a corset over skirt and maybe a bolero maybe overall pintafore ... idk seems like you could make completely different looks

You actually answered a question I had been pondering with this video lol. I want to do a skirt that has back to front on top and I was sort of half consciously thinking about pockets. One thing I mentioned to my bestie and I want to try but still working on it - I used to make corsets. I kind of want to do a side split skirt with an attached underbust corset. Still working on the details in my brain lol. I really need to find a spot out of the way of my children to be able to focus on some sewing. Too many ideas - not enough time! I hope you've had word about the house by now and you're having some calm time =)
I also love stripes above all patterns to the point that I also hamstring myself when it comes to actually making clothing from it. This color/pattern combo, though, came out so lovely.
I started sewing again a few years ago after I'd been doing a lot of cross stitch. It took me a REALLY long time to figure out that I could sew things by hand with no big issues. Sure, it's slow, but cross stitch is far slower. I do get into trouble with the speed of sewing with a machine. It's so easy to turn pieces wrong way round. Still working on the concept of French seams. The mind boggles.

I use a piece of washi tape (although any tape works) to mark a quarter inch away from my needle. Helps create a very accurate seam.

Absolutely love the dress!!! As for finding inexpensive tools and equipment, you might want to consider estate sales. I was able to purchase an older Babylock cover stitch machine for $25 a few years ago and it works great! I've also obtained fabric, trims, notions, organizational tools from estate sales. And that's here in a small town in SW FL. I can only imagine what you'd find in LA! Looking forward to seeing more of your work in the new house!

I made it in cotton and had exactly the same problem with the bra showing at the side. I added panels under the arms and it all got a bit messy…. And yes, on the pattern the front skirt goes all the way round to meet at the back.
I'd been thinking about a knit version of the walk-away dress, so I'm inspired! I noticed that you have what looks like an inch difference between the edge of the skirt and the band. If you don't mind a little hand sewing, you can make the back (tied in the front) more adjustable by snipping off an inch on either side, re-inserting the ties, and then hand stitching closed (thus allowing you to tie it tighter or leave looser as desired).

I love this and definitely want to make this myself. The things that i would change would be to add a second tie to the front to stop it warping the waistband. Also to add some interfacing to the waistband for the same reason.
Other than that, i agree with the changes you talked about at the end. I LOVE those sections as it is so helpful to see others mistakes and learn as a community 😊
It looks great, though I understand your concerns about the underarms and the skirt. I LOVE the sleeves! And I really like how the stripes turned out.
WOW, another great dress. Don't fret about equipment. I sew everything by hand because I don't have a sewing machine. To be true, I have a 1955 treadle Singer machine, but it needs some repairs, so it's unusable. Electric machines are too fast for me!

I think even just adding a few inches to the front panel so it tends to fall behind your hips rather than in front would help a lot with the gaping. Dang physics.

As one of your new viewers I appreciate that you don't have a serger. I'm new-ish to sewing and this is making me want to try more. Seeing you sew knots without a serger gives me more hope that I can manage it - more useful than the channels that tend towards "and now we'll just run this through the serger"!

I’ve never been a fan of sewing knits, but I have a few pieces that I want to make into dresses eventually, I just need to decide what I’m making. And although I love following patterns, I almost never make a garment exactly following the pattern, I always change something.

It might help to add a couple snaps to the hem to tack the front skirt to the back skirt at the sides.
Maybe you can get some tools you don't have 2d hand on Facebook market or something. Lots of older machines are still reliable and you can buy replacement blades for the rotary cutters so really it's the handle that's the "investment"

Lovely dress, great idea too to make a wrap dress. Instead of 1 narrow tie in the front you could make 2, I think that would be cute. Congrats!
Just an idea... because when I first saw this dress I thought it was 2 peices could you make an interchangeable capsule wardrobe with a basic knit dress like your hensley knit dresses and a corset over skirt and maybe a bolero maybe overall pintafore ... idk seems like you could make completely different looks

You actually answered a question I had been pondering with this video lol. I want to do a skirt that has back to front on top and I was sort of half consciously thinking about pockets.
One thing I mentioned to my bestie and I want to try but still working on it - I used to make corsets. I kind of want to do a side split skirt with an attached underbust corset. Still working on the details in my brain lol.
I really need to find a spot out of the way of my children to be able to focus on some sewing. Too many ideas - not enough time!

I also struggle with investing in tools and most of my more equipment type things have been gifts for various occasions.
I also love stripes above all patterns to the point that I also hamstring myself when it comes to actually making clothing from it. This color/pattern combo, though, came out so lovely.
I started sewing again a few years ago after I'd been doing a lot of cross stitch. It took me a REALLY long time to figure out that I could sew things by hand with no big issues. Sure, it's slow, but cross stitch is far slower. I do get into trouble with the speed of sewing with a machine. It's so easy to turn pieces wrong way round. Still working on the concept of French seams. The mind boggles.
