  • I am the reason you are seeing so many #thewalkawaydress videos this last month.
I traced out my original copy of the 1950's HIT pattern, The Walkaway Dress (Butterick 6015) and sent it out to the masses. This has created so many happy sewists, I decided to sew this original 1950's pattern for my plus size self.
This is my attempt at The Walkaway Dress Challenge! Enjoy!

My mum taught me to sew....very precisely, no short cuts, everything pinned, on grain, every marking transfered with tailors tacks or a tracingcwheel and chalk. Instructions followed meticulously. The results were chefs kiss, but oh so time consuming. I have never learnt to loosen up. And now I no longer sew ...but I did teach my daughter, and she is much freer and loves sewing.

I loved sewing until I needed glasses to see what I was doing. There were no $1.00 magnifiers at T,G&Y at that time so I lost my fire. At least you taught your daughter. Mine might be able to hem a sheet. 🤫

Tailors on Savile Row use weights instead of pins, it seems uber professional to me. I always pin - maybe I'm clumsy because I always knock the pattern around, so I need to pin. You mum sounds like a fantastic seamstress!

Thank you for saying this. It was exactly what I wanted to say. I love it! Definitely I love your style of speaking and I hope I have some tips for you for your back, I’ll email you.
First set your feet parallel to each other shoulder width apart.
Second reach with both arms straight up stretching in a relaxed way.
Third use one hand to grab the rest of the other and pull straight up with that wrist and hand.
Fourth on the side of the hand that’s grabbing, lift your heel about an inch or two.
Fifth, now stretching as much as you can while still being relaxed, pull up and over about 1 to 2 inches, at the most, to the side.
Sixth, Take two deep extremely relaxed breaths while you are in this position.
Seventh, repeat doing the same thing on the other side.
What you’re doing here is opening the vertebrae on one side without compressing the other side. If you do this or two relaxed breaths for each side several times a day, it can help release all the tension of the previous work. I taught it to dentists and people who lift heavy things and a woman who trims her twelve mini horse’s hooves. They all LOVE it!
I hope this helps everyone who reads this and please pass it on if you like it! The more people who know how to ease backs, the happier our whole world.

Two tips to deal with sewing with a wreaked back. First, raise your cutting table to at least the height of the kitchen bench. This can be done with blocks of wood if you don't need to raise it much. Alternatively, pieces of plumbing pipe can be jointed together to make a plinth or just slip onto the legs of the table if possible to lengthen them
The sewing machine will be more comfortable to use if you can raise the table it sits on, and, tilt the machine itself towards you. Experiment with the angle until it is right for you. Mine is around 1 1/2" .
Use something that absorbs vibrations such as an old phone book or easers. My husband also built me a large surround perfectly aligned. These are great as it stops you getting crick in your neck. I can sew for hours instead of minutes since tilting my machine.
Sorry for the novel, but I hope you will try these suggestions, being in pain is horrid

I made a copy of it with my alterations (which include extending the back of the under dress(?) so it forms a tube and putting in a small zipper to close it) and gave it to my sister. I ADORE your fabric! WOW!
I plan to make this dress again, and already have the fabric for 3 more.
    Thank you, Stephanie!!!!❤❤
Oh, and marking your darts from the right side of the fabric is the absolute correct thing to do if you then baste your darts closed with a ladder stitch -- I learned that from Snappy Dragon.

😬 i bought the same two patterns (B4790, B6211) 4 month ago. I love the tea length fifty's style. I needed to reorganize my sewing room and get my vintage machines going. So they have been on hold. Today working in my sewing room i decided to watch some sewing vids because I love watching sewing creations. I've been sewing since a kid. My mother had to make my clothes because i was too skinny and too long for store bought clothes. I've made a lot of my own clothes and clothes for others. I had to quit due to shoulder surgery. I'm sure you can relate. Now I'm 58 and wanted to start making my clothes again. And what do i see the two patterns i bought!!! Never new they were called walk away dresses, until today 😂 And they have problems to boot lol 😂 I've watched it be made the correct way by the patten and made by a block pattern (which i will be making a full pencil skirt). I just want to say thank you for showing these videos of this pattern because i will know why im pulling my hair out or threads not sure which 😂😂😂 I'm definitely using scrap for my first run now.

Hi 👋🏾😀 UK, LONDON 🇬🇧 HERE!
My darling, you were so funny! 🤣😂🤣😅 You so reminded me of me!! 🤣😂😅 1000%
When I was a teenager, I learnt BASIC sewing skills in school, so when I left school, of course, I had the knowledge.
One day I had to be some place...I think it was a 'shady' Modelling Agency' and had absolutely NO TRENDY clothes to wear, so in my PANIC! 🤯 I decided to sew something! I went for a matching skirts and blouse with a head wrap to match. 😬😅 SO, with TONGUE FIRMLY LATCHED onto one side of my lip 😋 I began sewing!
This is how it went in EMOJI FORMAT:
    😋 😋 🤔... 😳 😟 MISTAKE 😳 FIXED 😊👍🏾😋 😐 WAIT...WHAT! 🤔 😲 😖 MISTAKE 🙆🏾‍♀️ OH MY GOSH! WHAT'S THE TIME? ⏰ WELL, WHATEVER IT IS, I'M RUNNING OUT OF IT! 😬⏳ SEW 😋...SEW! 🤔 ERRR...WHERE'S MY 🤬 SCISSORS??...😶WHERE'S-MY-SCISSORS!! 🤬 👀...OH! I FOUND THEM! PHEW! 🥵 I WAS SITTING ON THEM! 🥴😬 YOU CLOWN! 🤡 🙄 😅 🤣 SEW! 😋 SEW! 😋😗🤨😛 SEW! 🤨🤔 WAIT! WHAT! 😮😲😠 NOOOO!! WRONG WAY ROUND!! 🤬 😡 😠 😳 🥺 😖 MELT DOWN! 🥺 😭 I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT IN TIME! 😭 I'M JUST NOT! I GIVE UP! I DON'T CARE! 😢 😰...😐 🤔 THE MOMENT WHEN I REMEMBERED HOW STRONG I AM AND THAT I CAN DO ANYTHING! 😃 💭 ENCOURAGING WORDS TO SELF 😑🙂💬 "COME ON GIRL! YOU ARE AMAZING! DON'T LET THAT BASTARD DEVIL 😈 WIN! NOW GET YOUR BACKSIDE FOCUSED AND LET'S FINISH THIS!" 😃👍🏾 SMILE BACK ON FACE, LIP BACK IN PLACE 😋, WATCHING THE CLOCK ⏰ 👀 LET'S 😋 SEW 😋 SEW 😋 SEW AND WITH SECONDS ⏱ TO SPARE...I DID IT!! 😃 YES!! WHOOO! YES! 🥳
Went to my modelling appointment, was told I wasn't pretty enough or slim enough and that I needed to drink more water for my complextion, but despite that; which should've destroyed me as; a young 16 year old girl I mean, it didn't! I walked away with a big smile on my face 😊 because I made an important discovery about myself, that I AM AMAZING and I-AM-INCREDIBLE! I CAN DO ANYTHING I PUT MY MIND TO! 😊😎
Just like you my darling! I love your sparkly personality and best of all, you are down to Earth! You keep it real and that's so important to us mere mortals 😅 So, I thank you for that.
Hope to see more of your sewing work soon. ❤🧡

It's... uh.... fine. It's not the worst I've used. It's got mystery fiber in it (poly). The seams are butt-glued to each other, but have survived multiple washings on both the quilt one kid and one dog have adopted as their own. It's more important that my geriatric moron of a dog has a cozy spot to sit under my sewing table than I have perfect binding, so it's... fine.
