honestly random selecting things is such a good thing because it eliminates the need to make a choice which can be a very hard thing to do (choice paralysis, my behated) but it also very much helps to realise what you actually dont like by forcing you to make a choice you wouldnt otherwise make but when presented with it only, you realise you dont actually like or it just does not work
For the arm movement issue: One thing to note about the dolman sleeves is that the angle they come out of the body part will impact mobility. Charlie angled the sleeves down a lot (like a 1) which will limit movement more than if the sleeves went out at a right angle to the bodice (more like a T). The T shape will need wider fabric and will create a bit of a fold in the armpit when the arms are down, but it is an option.
I havent gotten to the sewing part yet but I have a lot of thoughts on your statistical methods 😂 1) you dont play dnd? I am suprised 2) if two options you can just do odds and evens 3) when rolling two dice together the distribution curve is not even. Theres a higher chance of the numbers in the middle because there are multiple combinations that will give you that result. Hence the need for those multisided die in dnd. Given you probably put the simplest options first on each list, this bias will have made your life much harder

Idea for the plaid jumpsuit, make another solid colored one but split the plaid down the middle and then have two jumpsuits with plaid on one side and a solid color down the other. Might look less pajama-ish? Also the added funny idea that Matt could wear one and then they really would have the matching pjs, haha.
I thought everything was actually a huge success and using the dice and spreadsheet to start a project when you're stuck or want to use up some specific fabric is actually a great idea to get the ball rolling on a new project. I agree that it definitely needs some more framing of "if X absolutely not y" to help guide decision making but otherwise I think the whole premise was super fun!! Thank you for sharing!
suggestion for the jumpsuit: sew on (useless) buttons so it looks like its a buttoned piece. it will "explain" the off seams better than not having them

I think a better way to random select from the spreadsheet would be to choose two options from each step and coin toss to choose. That way you can weed out the truly bizarre combinations that just don't work with the fabric type or previous design elements.
Half-way through, and just got to the problem section! I have another fun way to do this challenge. 1- Random number generator so that you can just type in your number of options! 2- You could do that whole process with the goal of making 2 dresses with each selection being used at least once so there is still a random mix and match element but you can avoid the selections that are truly incompatible. I love this so much and may try to do my own with me sewing teacher.
This is such a fun idea. I love anything that involves randomly choosing. That is a video I will click. I searched last night for things like "pinterest chooses my next quilt project" and "randomized quilt" It just doesn't exist. I think I can see why. Fabric is pricy, and now you should plan out your project very carefully so you know you have an end product that is useful and you love, not just waste fabric to be playing. I see a lot of randomized crochet videos, but yarn tends to be a bit less precious than fabric.
FYI: the closer you make the arms eye to your armpit, the more movement you get. So on that first dress, you’d get more movement with those sleeves if you brought up the armhole closer to your natural armpit.
For your comment on your height, remember you are experiencing a height that is higher than your shoulder! Your measurement that you laid out was shoulder to ankle/foot, so remember that your eyes are like 12 inches higher than that, and it might help with that disorientation.

Probably would have been better with a lighter fabric and definitely a different hem. The jumpsuit, YES! Definitely looks like pajamas. AND I LOVE IT! That is going on my "Have to make this" list.
First of all, it was hilarious! I definitely got a few extra month for my life. Second, the yellow dress can work as an office dress over a shirt (ruffles need to be sacrificed, a heavy loss, but life is tough) for a colder days, for example. It has potential! The sheer dress... looks nice from the distance, but the hem looks weird. The tie at the back might work better with a low front neckline, if it (tie) sits as high as possible, like if you have a regular collar, just without any fabric on your back (I assume. I don't sew). And it's a great exercise, too! I think, it might be a cool project as a line of doll clothes, or a set of sketches, with some wild colors as well.
I think this could be a way to weed out choices you don't want. If you roll a choice you go "ugh" to remove it from the options and roll again. That way you discover what you want without actually making decisions. At the end you can decide if you still want to make it.
the blue is very cute and loos good on you. if you could do a bust augmentation somehow it would be marketable. the yellow is a great summer wear. the plaid is comfey and fits well.

I recently made a dolman style 3/4 sleeve wrap top from a woven fabric (specifically Lady Marlowe no. 8143, altered to make it a full wrap along with my fit adjustments) and it worked really well! However, it’s bias cut and the sleeves are decently roomy in the armpit area and taper in. I also reinforced the waistline with some cotton twill ribbon as a belt because bias-cut linen is surprisingly stretchy for a non-stretch woven fabric.
I like the blue one as much as the yellow one. Jumpsuit is cute.. lol the crooked plaid would drive my adhd brain. Yes super comfy around the house!! Love

Yes, you should wear yellow more! It matches your personality. I think a randomly-selected design that you then PICK a fabric for based on what the dice gave for all the design elements could work really well! So just don't let the dice choose the fabric, lol.
Yes wear yellow! Your skin isn't washed out or looks sickly, which is what happens in my family. Yellow works well for you, I think especially when you have the slight tan from summer.
I love the plaid jumpsuit, even though agree it looks like pajamas. The yellow dress turned out super cute. A lighter weight in the same color would be *chef's kiss*. Not a fan of the navy lace as made, though you did a great job with what you had to work with. All your experimental sewing projects are so much fun, and educational to boot.

Note to self and other creators- choose your fate adventures rarely go in your favor. Though none of these were a complete failure in overall appearance, certain materials just dont work well for certain projects. I do love the jumpsuit, but for me, I hate jumpers because you have to take off the whole thing to use the bathroom. I would have to have some kind of quick access, be it snaps like baby clothes, or some kind of tie around skirt/ drop drawer.... Anyways, love your work darling, many chuckles and fun as always. I love using dice to choose what item on my to-do list to do next, mainly because it helps me find out what I don't want to do from an overwhelming list of things. Just keep re-rolling the dice until it lands on something you want/like.
Considering the randomness of the dice I think they worked out fairly well. Love the jumper but as soon as you said pjs and then the matching family pictures lol. I think that idea is now stuck in my brain. Also I know that the pattern matching doesn’t bother you but it would drive me crazy! I wonder if a piping would help… or bug me more. I think for a woven, no waist dress with godets - I would have added a princess seam that way you can accommodate the bust line and waistline being different measurements even without adding in a waist seam, then you can add the godets in to the skirt part of that princess seam. Also, you've got the welt on the wrong part of the pocket again, the welt should be on the bottom side of the pocket so that it goes in front of your hand. And hurray! for comfy house clothes! I'm becoming increasing more comfortable with having a separate house and outside wardrobe, and having to get dressed before going to the store.
I sketched along with the description…what fun! To get the asymmetric my strategy would be to make the height of the godets asymmetric rather than the bottom hemline
You could format the selections based on woven or knit. So if you roll woven, the other selections that would show up in the lists would be only the options that would work with woven.
"We don't have many games in this house" said in a quest for dice is probably the first thing you've ever said that I absolutely do not relate to *at all* 🤣🤣 We have *so many games*, but the majority of the dice aren't even in those games, but rather, are for TTRPG shenanigans. Apparently, I have opinions, and if you're interested, by all means keep reading, but if not, feel free to skip the rest of my comment here 😅 My two unsolicited cents: I think both of those could be modified to be more wearable. For the heavy one, I would even out the hem (maybe add some kind of treatment like a ruffle or flounce in a lighter-weight material) and turn the sleeves into either a butterfly (also in the lighter-weight material) or just take the ruffle off and make it into more of a pinafore/overalls kind of situation. I would probably also make the waist elastic or do a fixed waistline treatment of some kind to keep the fullness of the skirt consistent and consistently where I want it (though I know that would mean putting in a dreaded zipper). For the sheer one, as far as *my* aesthetic goes, giving it some shape at the waist would go a long way. I wouldn't cinch or belt it, but instead shape the pieces to conform to the body. The godets seemed like they were placed really high, but it may have just seemed like that because of the general looseness at the waist. Since my idea would be to take it in at the waist, I would definitely use the godets to help bring back any fullness needed to go over the hip. I'd also add in more godets for better, all-around swoosh. As far as the tightness at the bust, a fun option *could* be to slash it down the center front and add lacing or maybe a contrasting panel or something along those lines. Could even do a kind of "mirrored with the back" situation, but with ties that are more like a bandeau top. Idk. I have ideas. Ymmv 🙃
The whole beginning of the selection process of this made me laugh so much! You do realize with two dice, you’ll never get a one as an option, right? Unless you’re doing double ones.
You could make it more conditional, so like if woven eliminate a few more choices such as longer sleeves. And would you ever want to use a heavy fabric for any combination of these options?

Honestly, speaking as someone who once had to steam and press a full banquet hall’s worth of poly blend tablecloths in less than 6 hours (after they’d been sitting crumpled in storage for god knows how long), ironing the precut lining pieces and trimming to shape is FAR less daunting and far less actual work than trying to manage the one giant piece of material would have been. So there, anecdotal evidence in support of the Charlie way 😂
You didn't match the plaid!! BUT I did like the wheel of fortune design exercise. It's still very instructive for people who are learning why fabric choice is important with a design and how different elements work or don't work together. I think this was a huge win for your post! ❤
It might not work for your brain but I think some might benefit from changing the order of some of the categories. Like more skips and coordinating options. Like you just don't add slits to certain skirts, if it is already flowy enough (the godets) or typically with a asymmetrical/high-low hems, you also just don't do asymmetrical hems on floor length dresses. And the sleeve columns probably need more practical coordination. And obviously if anyone wants to use your spreadsheet they can be more selective of the design elements they will actually enjoy/ their preferences
I would suggest limiting the amount of random variables to actually make something interesting but not crazy. You could roll to select like 3 categories to random and then design around those parameters, this is a very common exercise in art and design. Creating within limitations but not so many options it becomes convoluted. Also when you’re looking at your length on the table remember you’re not including your head lol so don’t worry you are taller than your dress length. I think they both turned out nice in the end Edit: Also the most important part of design is editing so if something’s not working get it out of there
As you were doing this, it occurred to me that you need a fork in the road. Right at fabric choice, some options should be weeded out. So a heavy woven would not allow for a delicate sleeve no matter how crazy your dice roll was.

May I suggest getting better dice. Those seem to have a tendency to role 2s and 4s. Beyond that, I really don't think either of the dresses turned out bad at all. I think even if you had stuck to roles for the first one it probably still would've been fine.

I hate to be a naysayer, but the amount of times you miscounted the options had me in a panic. You'd roll a 3 but only count down 2, or roll a 6 but only count down 5. The outfits were still great, but I wonder what they would have been like if counted correctly. 💖💖💖
So if you're gonna do random selections again in the future: free online die rollers exist so you can specify the number of choices. Also you can do it in the spreadsheet. The formula you're looking for is randbetween(lowerNumber, higherNumber).....Also those Die def aren't weighted correctly. Also jumpsuit is def pj vibes...which I paused to write this and was typing before i even saw the jumpsuit part
On that first roll that you only need a one or two.. go odds/evens so you don't have to keep rolling. ~pauses at around 8 minutes~ your sheet says godets.. was it supposed to be plural? Is there anything that says you can't have a hip high godet inside another godet that's waist high? Might as well with the asymmetry. ok.. hitting play again so we didn't godet that way.. I wonder if the godets had gone in the arm pit, if that would have made a big difference in fit. hmmmm yeah. plaid.. pattern matching.. I loose my mind when patterns don't match. There's a website.. eshakti that has software to change 3 of those elements on screen.. sleeve, length, neckline. Tea length isn't one of their choices though.. 2" and 4" above the ankle are choices. It's too rich for my blood but I like playing with the options. My favorite configuration is usually, shaped scoop neck, elbow length sleeves and 4" above the ankle.
you could have made it work with a non-stretch fabric with the right amount of ease and darts and the right cut. plenty of dresses are made of non-stretch material. but you need darts and ease.

Same with a 3 option choice. Anything over a 3 you divide in 2. That's what gamers do when they need a 3 sided die.

I love the Blue Dress
A very fun show. I really liked the hem line on the blue dress.
I love the plaid jumpsuit, even though agree it looks like pajamas. The yellow dress turned out super cute. A lighter weight in the same color would be *chef's kiss*. Not a fan of the navy lace as made, though you did a great job with what you had to work with. All your experimental sewing projects are so much fun, and educational to boot.

That was fun. I'm super intrigued by the asymmetry in the way you accidentally did it. I love me an asymmetrical hem and now I am thinking I need to do this version. And yes, you do look like you are wearing matching PJs for Christmas, lol! Fun video!
Note to self and other creators- choose your fate adventures rarely go in your favor.
Though none of these were a complete failure in overall appearance, certain materials just dont work well for certain projects.
I do love the jumpsuit, but for me, I hate jumpers because you have to take off the whole thing to use the bathroom. I would have to have some kind of quick access, be it snaps like baby clothes, or some kind of tie around skirt/ drop drawer....

i like the blue dress
My first thought on the yellow was, yellow looks great on you! I bet it would look adorable in a challis.
I love everything about the jumpsuit except the mismatched plaid would make it unwearable for me.
The yellow dress reminds me of one worn in the animated anastasia movie (the purple one in paris).

I love using dice to choose what item on my to-do list to do next, mainly because it helps me find out what I don't want to do from an overwhelming list of things. Just keep re-rolling the dice until it lands on something you want/like.

Considering the randomness of the dice I think they worked out fairly well.
Love the jumper but as soon as you said pjs and then the matching family pictures lol. I think that idea is now stuck in my brain. I think for a woven, no waist dress with godets - I would have added a princess seam that way you can accommodate the bust line and waistline being different measurements even without adding in a waist seam, then you can add the godets in to the skirt part of that princess seam.
Also, you've got the welt on the wrong part of the pocket again, the welt should be on the bottom side of the pocket so that it goes in front of your hand.
And hurray! for comfy house clothes! I'm becoming increasing more comfortable with having a separate house and outside wardrobe, and having to get dressed before going to the store.
I sketched along with the description…what fun! To get the asymmetric my strategy would be to make the height of the godets asymmetric rather than the bottom hemline
You could format the selections based on woven or knit. So if you roll woven, the other selections that would show up in the lists would be only the options that would work with woven.
"We don't have many games in this house" said in a quest for dice is probably the first thing you've ever said that I absolutely do not relate to *at all* 🤣🤣 We have *so many games*, but the majority of the dice aren't even in those games, but rather, are for TTRPG shenanigans.

My two unsolicited cents: I think both of those could be modified to be more wearable.
For the heavy one, I would even out the hem (maybe add some kind of treatment like a ruffle or flounce in a lighter-weight material) and turn the sleeves into either a butterfly (also in the lighter-weight material) or just take the ruffle off and make it into more of a pinafore/overalls kind of situation. I would probably also make the waist elastic or do a fixed waistline treatment of some kind to keep the fullness of the skirt consistent and consistently where I want it (though I know that would mean putting in a dreaded zipper).
For the sheer one, as far as *my* aesthetic goes, giving it some shape at the waist would go a long way. I wouldn't cinch or belt it, but instead shape the pieces to conform to the body. The godets seemed like they were placed really high, but it may have just seemed like that because of the general looseness at the waist. Since my idea would be to take it in at the waist, I would definitely use the godets to help bring back any fullness needed to go over the hip. I'd also add in more godets for better, all-around swoosh. As far as the tightness at the bust, a fun option *could* be to slash it down the center front and add lacing or maybe a contrasting panel or something along those lines. Could even do a kind of "mirrored with the back" situation, but with ties that are more like a bandeau top.

The whole beginning of the selection process of this made me laugh so much! You do realize with two dice, you’ll never get a one as an option, right? Unless you’re doing double ones.
You could make it more conditional, so like if woven eliminate a few more choices such as longer sleeves. And would you ever want to use a heavy fabric for any combination of these options?

Honestly, speaking as someone who once had to steam and press a full banquet hall’s worth of poly blend tablecloths in less than 6 hours (after they’d been sitting crumpled in storage for god knows how long), ironing the precut lining pieces and trimming to shape is FAR less daunting and far less actual work than trying to manage the one giant piece of material would have been. So there, anecdotal evidence in support of the Charlie way 😂
You didn't match the plaid!! BUT I did like the wheel of fortune design exercise. It's still very instructive for people who are learning why fabric choice is important with a design and how different elements work or don't work together. I think this was a huge win for your post! ❤
It might not work for your brain but I think some might benefit from changing the order of some of the categories. Like more skips and coordinating options. Like you just don't add slits to certain skirts, if it is already flowy enough (the godets) or typically with a asymmetrical/high-low hems, you also just don't do asymmetrical hems on floor length dresses. And the sleeve columns probably need more practical coordination.
And obviously if anyone wants to use your spreadsheet they can be more selective of the design elements they will actually enjoy/ their preferences

Sometimes experiments work, sometimes not. The results were good in some aspects.
I would suggest limiting the amount of random variables to actually make something interesting but not crazy. You could roll to select like 3 categories to random and then design around those parameters, this is a very common exercise in art and design. Creating within limitations but not so many options it becomes convoluted. Also when you’re looking at your length on the table remember you’re not including your head lol so don’t worry you are taller than your dress length.
I think they both turned out nice in the end
Edit: Also the most important part of design is editing so if something’s not working get it out of there

As you were doing this, it occurred to me that you need a fork in the road. Right at fabric choice, some options should be weeded out. So a heavy woven would not allow for a delicate sleeve no matter how crazy your dice roll was.
I am reminded of a Big Bang episode where Sheldon uses dice rolls to decide on his food. It didn't always go his way 😂

i think the only change you should make to the yellow dress is take off the ruffle sleeve and just leave it as a strap. then that dress is perfectly wearable. of course thats just my opinion on what i think would look good.

May I suggest getting better dice. Those seem to have a tendency to role 2s and 4s.
Beyond that, I really don't think either of the dresses turned out bad at all. I think even if you had stuck to roles for the first one it probably still would've been fine.

I hate to be a naysayer, but the amount of times you miscounted the options had me in a panic. You'd roll a 3 but only count down 2, or roll a 6 but only count down 5. The outfits were still great, but I wonder what they would have been like if counted correctly. 💖💖💖
So if you're gonna do random selections again in the future: free online die rollers exist so you can specify the number of choices. Also you can do it in the spreadsheet. The formula you're looking for is randbetween(lowerNumber, higherNumber).....Also those Die def aren't weighted correctly.

On that first roll that you only need a one or two.. go odds/evens so you don't have to keep rolling.

There's a website.. eshakti that has software to change 3 of those elements on screen.. sleeve, length, neckline. Tea length isn't one of their choices though.. 2" and 4" above the ankle are choices. It's too rich for my blood but I like playing with the options. My favorite configuration is usually, shaped scoop neck, elbow length sleeves and 4" above the ankle.

2 things - even or odd.
you could have made it work with a non-stretch fabric with the right amount of ease and darts and the right cut. plenty of dresses are made of non-stretch material. but you need darts and ease.
the closet historian would have some dolman non-stretch dresses im sure ive seen on there. she does almost entirely non-stretch.
