OMG Heaven in a breakfast bowl. I mainly eat rice porridge and that little combo is even better in rice porridge. It tastes like baked rice pudding with the brown sugar in it, and if you use ordinary sugar with some vanilla it tastes more like creamed rice, to me any way. So good…

I note today that Coles Online has 1.8kg Quick Oats for the same price as regular rolled oats, but if you have regular in your pantry, and a food processor, you can make your own Quick Oats by giving the regular oats a quick burst or two in the food processor. Even better if you can bulk buy for cheaper, the regular rolled oats, and process them yourself. P.S. Coles Online Australia. 6:09 Stacey has the same idea lol.

Hello Stace, fellow kiwi here. This porridge recipe and tips is good timing what with NZ heading into winter. My palate prefers crunchy so my go to breakfast is toast or weetbix, so I've never been a fan of porridge either but I will give it a go when we have a cold day. Your reminiscing reminded me of one of my siblings that LOVES porridge and I have memories of him eating a big bowl of this with brown sugar, washed down with a big mug of milo and toast on the side. All the best for your surgery, I hope it goes smoothly and for your recovery. I'm off to watch your pizza dough recipe so I can get rid of my salami and tomatoes.

I always found those packets of porridge too salty but my boys liked them as kids. I like a little bit of porridge with my brown sugar and cream, totally unhealthy. Now, because I'm an ancient one, I eat oatmeal bars for my cholesterol, here in Canada, Nature Valley is the most natural one I think. I pulled the entire front off my drawer, for some reason it started to fall off the drawer slides and get stuck, so I had to fix the whole drawer and put in a new set of slides, then as if by magic, the rest did the same thing, so I have 3 drawers basically sitting on top of one another. Now I can't remember where I put the slides to fix the cupboard. I decided not to rip it out and chuck it out the window and set it on fire, I'll just wait until I find the slides😂 I really believe there's something in this house is testing my patience and it's being a jerk.

And I will mention that if you make yourself some porridge and then pack the kid's lunch, fixing breakfast for other etc., the porrdige will be room temperture. :-) Not sure what you are having done, but my husband;s life was greatly improved by knee surgeries. But this may be a time for your kids to get involved in running a household. I send this with a prayer for comfort and peace.

Yes, I loved those little packets! You bought a box and had x2 of each of the 4 flavours. Well now all you can get is a box with just 8x of one flavour and there's only 3 flavours now and its hugely expensive. So for me this is exactly what I need for my new RV life travelling in Australia. I'll be making multi-flavour in the little baggys. Easy to store bags rather than jars in my limited space.
Hmmm for more healthy, besides adding the milk powder, perhaps you might like to add "sustagen/plain" (hospital grade, high in protein, etc and has milk)

NEVER get tired of that intro! I don't mind cooked oaks (MUST be the old fashioned and not the quick cook kind) but like you I prefer the texture of overnight oats. It's nice to see you making this, especially because with all the add-ins you are using, you've made these nutrient-dense - what a great way to start the day! Have you ever tried a savory oatmeal? Sometimes I like to have just plain hot oatmeal with a bit of meat (ham, bacon, sausage, etc) and a couple of runny-yolk fried eggs broken over the top. I use a sprinkling of my Montreal Steak Seasoning on the top to bring it all to life, and it's SO GOOD for something different. My fav for overnight oats is a bit of Greek yogurt, cinnamon, a splash of vanilla and good honey, a bit of chia seeds, and mix with a bit of milk - let it set overnight and in the morning add some pecans or walnuts and a bit of banana. SO YUM! Between the stove and the cupboard your kitchen has charm and character, and is well lived in and used, and I'm ALL ABOUT IT! Another great vid - Love & BIG HUGS to you and Husband!

Hi again Stacey, I had to share the results of making up a base instant oats mix - my 5 year old moko (grand daughter) didn't even notice that I had swapped out the Uncle Toby porridge packet for the made-at-home one using the mix you shared on your video :) I used coconut milk powder that I got ($4.29 for a 100g sachet from Countdown) and added a little of some leftover pumpkin spice mix I had. Yesterday morning she just about ate the whole bowl!! She has to have porridge with cream and I have to add hot buttered vogel toast cut up into bits. It was so satisfying watching her demolish her kai. She didn't want any of the dehydrated apple I had made added though. I'm going to 'experiment' using left-over freeze dried powders I have in my cupboard - blueberry or mango would be nice I think. I figure if I need to keep to a porridge texture to make it appetising for my moko that powders or the like would be better. I won't be buying instant porridge packets now not when I can get a 1.5kg bag of rolled oats for $4.49 and just have to add brown sugar, salt, coconut powder and water. Thank you for this breakfast recipe winner it will definitely be a keeper in our whanau from now on :)

Hi Stacey. I’m definitely going to try this. I don’t like the little packets from the store because the oats are too mushy, but I think this will work for me. Good luck with your surgery. My sister is having a knee replacement also in May. You’ll be in my thoughts.

We bought a bulk box of "maple cinnamon oatmeal" packets, and then discovered they were too sweet! So we've been mixing them with plain oats to cut the sugar, but I think I'm inspired now to use them up in a couple of big "base ingredients" jars with another bag of oats and some nuts or seeds. (or maybe choc chips! ... so much for less sugar haha). But wondering: do you keep the made up oat jars in the fridge since they have milk powder in them? I know the milk powder packet says that once opened, it should only be kept in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. We use milk powder all the time in our baking so it sits in the fridge anyway. Maybe I'll just add the milk before cooking the porridge.
All the best for your upcoming surgery!

I nearly wet myself when you returned to set with the front of the draw in your hands! Ive cooked in some really dodgy places so that resonated - B T W my father and grandfather made porridge with just salt and butter and grand dad took a lump of cold sliced porridge out on the farm for lunch the both lived into their nineties, fit and well with all their marbles so maybe that is the secret - work hard and eat porridge

I’ve never been a big fan of porridge either and like you I enjoy overnight oats. Then I realized that I just like toast for breakfast and porridge is a quick and easy lunch option. Rolled oats have great health benefits too. Thank you Stacey for sharing your knowledge…love your work!

Stacey your intro is perfect & green is a fabulous colour on you😊 Loved porridge as a child, cooked in a pot back then. We sprinkled it with brown sugar waited for it to dissolve then slowly dribbled milk in the bowl down the side. The dissolved sugar would float 😋. Only time we were allowed to play with our food 🤣 It's still my daily still but with honey. Time to jazz them up. Thanks for your ideas. Keep smiling 🙂

I’m with you on the porridge. Always hated it as a kid. We used to have it with treacle, or golden syrup, and I was never a fan. I mean, I can eat it, but it’s not my favourite. I think it’s a consistency thing.
