  • Recent experiences with coalitions in South African metros indicate that opposition parties are facing challenges finding agreement on coalitions, raising concerns for the upcoming national and provincial elections. However, in an interview with Biznews, Freedom Front Plus leader, Dr Pieter Groenewald said political parties and voters are in a learning process. Groenewald also addresses concerns about trust and potential coalition partners, particularly highlighting the need for the DA to clarify its position on forming a coalition with the ANC. He also touches on the potential challenges of a white opposition leader becoming the President of South Africa and suggests the leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Velenkosini Hlabisa as a potential candidate for the presidency- Linda van Tilburg

    Meneer Groenewald, I never would have thought I would say this in a million years, but I appreciate your clarity of thought on these matters. We are tired of being blackmailed on this race thing. 2024 is monumental, a year of significant change in both national and international politics. We cannot continue to vote based on sentiment. We have been treated with contempt by black leadership. It's time to reframe our thinking. We need leaders we can hold to account, not leaders who behave like they are some sort of royalty and we are their peasants. Race won't work this time around as a blackmailing tactic. Show your worth as leaders or get out the fu#*#* way! I vote for my interests, not a race.

    Our electoral and governmental systems are so attuned to polarization via this silly political party system. For instance, apart from the structures we have gotten used to ... why should our President belong to a political party? Why can he / she not just be elected on his / her own merits?

    • @Hannodb1961
      @Hannodb1961 Год назад +1

      The president needs to be a part of a political party, because on his own he will not be able to achieve much, and in a political party, he can be held accountable to the values of that party, but as an individual, you give him a mandate to pretty much do whatever he wants. I don't get why people are making such a fuss about political parties. A political party is nothing more than an association of like minded politicians, and it makes for better elections. The voters want political parties, and you can see that in municipal elections: Very few people vote differently on the two ballots. And politicians prefer political parties, because they frame the narrative, saving them a lot of time having to state their position from scratch. Political parties are an inevitability, because they make politics more intelligible.

    • @maseratifittipaldi
      @maseratifittipaldi Год назад

      @@Hannodb1961 The President certainly does not have to be beholden to a political party. Of course he will not be able to "do whatever he wants" ! Because he is at the lowest rung of the democratic hierarchy he is accountable to everyone in general and to the Cabinet and Parliament - the levels immediately above him - in particular.
      Political parties are mostly inward looking and focused on power, rather than to serve, manage or develop the country. The political party system is archaic and almost barbaric - dating back many centuries. For evidence of what "likeminded" politicians can do, refer to the Nazi party of Germany and also to our own ANC party.
      Of course politicians prefer political parties - it is after all a system designed by politicians for the benefit of politicians - but what we should strive for is to move away from populism towards a system based on quality and servitude. We still have a long way to go.

      "He is accountable to everyone" aka, he is accountable to no one, because you will never be able to please everyone
      He is the lowest rung of the democratic hierarcy. Nope, He has the highest authority in cabinet, and thats also why he needs to be a party member, so he doesnt work against the will of the majority party. If that is not the case, why would you even care who the president is?
      The Nazi's was a party. Seriously? You advance that as an argument? Do you seriously want me to respond to that?
      Parties want power. Yes, and thats why its a _good thing_ that we dont have a two party system where the biggest two parties have a guarenteed monopoly on power. In a proportional system, any small party can become a major player, and a dominant party can disappear into oblivion. So if a party abuses the power intrusted to it, it can not only loose power, but disappear for ever. We have a much more effective mechanism to hold parties accountable, if only the electorate would educate themselves on the benefits of the proportional system.
      You can forget about parties ever going away. That is never going to happen. Even if we only voted for individuals today, within two elections, those individuals would've organised into parties, and the electorate would reward them for it. The notion of direct elections is ignorant and naieve, and even dangerous, because that is where the first past the post system came from, and we _certainly_ dont want to go back to that.

Although the need exist to get the current criminal enterprise, the ANC out of power, that cannot stay the motivation for coalition. If each party put their "gripes"aside and commit themselves to serve the country and its peoples with clear policies, transparency, and a motivation to serve all peoples, it will bring voters in. We the people are tired of a lack of leadership, divisive politics, and poor law enforcement. The Federal Coalition of Mzansi? On policy each party has a different leaning on the political spectrum but there seems to be a common denominator. It is also the key differential factor separating these parties from the EFF and ANC. They are pro-federalist, pro-decentralisation and against centralism.

    Pieter nothing new about coalition government in SA….the ANC has had a coalition from the START prior to the election in 1994 , The real ANC is a small party but because of their coalition with the SACP, The trade Union ,the woman’s league and the Youth league they are the majority currently ‼️…you can have a agreed coalition prior to the election but cement it formally after the election..
    Further you can make those agreements prior like the ANC did prior in 1994.
    But I agree SA can’t have a white led government but you can have coalition multi party government like the current ANC coalition party government….

      Yes we know this, but in order for this to coalition to work means giving back land and honouring a 92 referendum...
      blacks mustn't think they deserve another term because of skin color over, after the last 50 year balls up they should instead admit the problem. No political party is prepared to even campaign on land rights how can they then be trusted to take us forward?
      If this coalition is being spoken of which is a historical one, and coloureds have outright rejected Democrats and come behind whites we know the writing is on the wall... African minorities are in for a nightmare and on there way back to Rwanda, you can bet your bottom dollar that Cape Whites are not going to hang around as whites want the liberals gone.

    Reality is that any future workable coalition will have to involve opposition parties keeping the ANC in power since the ANC will never accept electoral defeat, but will make South Africa ungovernable and most probably resume the armed struggle. At best the ANC may share power but relinquishing power due to electoral defeat simply does not exist for the ANC.

    There is nothing that makes a black person, like hearing an Afrikaaner accent because there is a misconceived prejudice that there are the most racist, yet, Dr Groenewald's interpretation makes really sense than Steenhuisen. And there is nothing wrong with having a white president, however, they are always far from understanding black behaviour and do not attempt to consolidate black voters by becoming much more closer to them. For instance, fear of being in a township, crimes and all these sensitive based ideas make it much more complicated; thus making the black populace feel doubtful to vote for people who do not understand the struggle.

    IFP leaders should read Thomas Sowell (FF+has already started) and FF+ must read Black Consciousness literature. Provided they can absorb what read, these two could eventually form a worthy alternative -short of overturning the entire system.

Both nations share values of self identity that are not rooted on self preservation but collective generational preservation and strong family values. Our strong sense of self identity allows us to respect ourselves, our elders and others. I believe we can learn a lot from each other and build this country by rolling up our sleeves...and getting our hands dirty..

If the DA is ANC-Lite, the EFF is ANC-Concentrate.
