  • South Africa's former Finance Minister, Trevor Manuel says the country's leaders have become out of touch with the people and that has become a fundamental problem.
Manuel joined CapeTalk presenter, Clarence Ford in studio, reflecting on various issues, while also sharing his views on how to rectify the many problems South Africa faces.
Manuel added that governments failures to provide basic services is leading to people opting for private services, such as healthcare or education, and public services deteriorate further as a result.

@markwinter7511. On the button friend. I had a bit of a giggle when I read the heading "leaders out of touch." Ntaturally our prior "worldwide esteemed" Finance Minister was not at all OUT OF TOUCH" When that infamous ARMS DEAL rot occurred....UNDER HIS WATCH. . Humanity may well understand the "price" one day. Of terribly short and "selective" memories.

The no fees schools the ANC'S pride, but the education is the worst in the country. My neighbour teaches at a no fees school and I was told personally how bad the situation is there. If I were Trevor, I would have hung my head in shame to see how they looted the country and people are living in poverty because the ANC. Trevor you know full well that if the people take a stand, tomorrow their lives get ended. This is how the ANC roll. The ANC came and destroyed this country and stop blaming apartheid. Trevor the only skills that the ANC has is corruption.

    • @JT-ts6nr
      @JT-ts6nr 10 месяцев назад

This country is in a mess and made like that by those in charge. They had the opportunity to make this country better than it was in apartheid but they took on the same mentality.
The effects of apartheid can not be pushed to the side, but they could've taken a better direction, but they didn't. The government only cares about a minority being those in their circles just like the apartheid government. In a way, we have not become better. The apartheid government had the power to muzzle people violently, where the ANC does not have that power.
The majority of this country has not had adequate leaders from the get-go.
We are still in apartheid, only the leaders have just changed. Those who have benefited from apartheid are still benefiting.

I am literally shocked how selective your memory really is. Its ine thing blaming the ANC for allowing a rot to set in that has created untold hardships.
It is a fact that under him we had better growth than in the latter parts of Apartheid tragically it was jobless growth. So money was not spend as promised to grow the economy but to line shareholders and their executives pockets. He and Mbeki allowed South African enabled corporates to do foreign listings, dismantled economic protective measures which any other socalled western country still have in place.
Your eagerness to bludgeon a black government for any problem in the country makes you blind to see and acknowledge finer differences.
I for example would criticise them for not having the guts to push through a more change not transformation orientated economic reality and which subsequently allow these ravenous crooks to capture the state.
I would in my crotoque include the role private sector and their organisrd networks had played in this sordid saga. Too often they are not fingered in the mess we are having. Some virtue signallers and hypocrites with the worst double standards we are.
Mr. Manuel and former president Thabo Mbeki were qouted as being disillusioned by the fact that their enthusiasm to deliver a far more laissez faire neoliberal enabling business environment the consequence of secret economic negotiations during Codesa were not met with an equally enthusiastoc FDI in flow and more disturbing a gla4ing lack of domestic reinvestment of earned capital here in skills and jobcreating business ventures.
This all while prioritising the paying off of debt the largest which was Apartheid debt to internal creditors who proped up the Apartheid regime.
So, please the day you can be honest, transparent and sincere in your judgement the country would move in the rihht direction.
Take off the racialised blinkers and have a degree of objevtivity that is solution focused that factors in all South Africans as a priority.
The curernt trend of simply blaming the ANC led goverent for all problems is of no use and people are not stupid because they know. The levels of destitution cretaed by poverty, unemployment and inequality is an extremely dangerous powederkeg which need spund minds and hearts in the right places for the people of South Africa not racists diatribes.
We will all be negatively affected if a spontaneous revolt break out while we are busy virtue signalling.

You cannot compare government public hospital care in 1993 with government public hospital health care in 2023! I know because I was in that system from the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s till now and I have seen the massive decline firsthand! Also I come from the Education Sector and I have seen firsthand the massive decline in Education starting when th Bengu introducing OBE in the early 2000’s and because schools especially high schools and hospitals were not being built in ratio with population growth . Add cadre deployment with people put in top management positions who did not have the qualifications, skills and experience for the positions they have been appointed to. The morally bankrupt character of virtually every one of these politicians and their appointees have obviously infected every fabric of the society of South Africa. Former Minister Manuel is quite on point on the matter of incapable ministers that are currently in cabinet. We have a crisis in this country regarding political leaders who think they are untouchable. It is indeed the responsibility of active citizenry that can help the State to hold accountable the very incapable, corrupt and despondent political leaders and ministers. For instance, the Minister of Police is more concerned about the PR of his Ministry than he is more concerned about the levels of violent crimes taking place in the country. In Cape Town alone we are inundated with mafia-style kind of crime active with this issue of extortion and murder being at very rates in the Langunya are within the Cape Flats, and yet both local and national governments are not doing enough about such realities. The Minister of Police is not bothered about such issues. And so, as members of public we are left to our own devices to find ways to deal these issues of crime hence the establishment of neighbourhood watch and police forums.

Ja I can see it now, I have been sitting on this end of the world wondering why they are putting up with the complete failure of a government, including the destruction of all infrastructure. Yes the Zondo commission brought up many names, those who still hold a position on the gravy train. Does anyone still wonder why the Rand has been devalued to such an extent that it reminds me of an old man jiggle the cents in his pockets, just a noise. No value anywhere. Only the people in SOUTH AFRICA can make a change, they need to vote for the people who CAN actually fix what’s broken, those who have shown that they have the balls to show what they can do. Look at demographics, in the past most people who were on MA were white, that group is far more diverse today. People of all races whose employment benefits often include a MA contribution from their employer have the right to choose if they want to belong to a MA, often a difficult choice as their contribution impacts on their monthly expenses and the State does not provide an effective alternative. We are fortunate in the WC to have better state healthcare than the rest of the country

The interview with Trevor was undeniably captivating and thought-provoking. His eloquence and articulate manner of speaking truly showcased his deep understanding of the current political landscape. Trevor's insight challenged conventional narratives and encouraged a more nuanced understanding of the complex factors that have contributed to the current state of affairs.
During the conversation, Trevor expressed his belief that the current regime has been unfit to rule for approximately three decades. This bold statement shed light on the longstanding issues that have plagued the nation, emphasizing the urgent need for a significant shift in leadership.
Furthermore, Trevor offered a nuanced perspective on the role of apartheid in the regime's failure. Contrary to popular belief, he proposed that while apartheid undoubtedly had detrimental effects, it should not solely shoulder the blame for the regime's shortcomings and failures. In fact, quite the opposite.
Most strikingly, Trevor passionately advocated for change, emphasizing that the time for transformation is not only desirable but absolutely necessary. He underscored the importance of individuals taking ownership of the systems, laws, schools, and other vital components of society. By actively participating in these areas and embracing their responsibility, people can play a pivotal role in shaping a future that is both positive and meaningful.
Trevor's words resonated deeply, reminding us that change is not a passive process but one that requires active engagement and commitment from each and every one of us. As we collectively embrace this transformative journey, we have the power to pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.

Positives: Mbeki, Mboweni and Manual provided a good economic structure. Negatives: Manual destroyed the clothing sector in the country and 20 000 jobs. We are still waiting for Arms Deal off setts. His party ensured that unemplyment is now double than during Apartheid. The ANC presided over the biggest Aids disaster (8.2m) in the world and 4 presidents provided no leadership on Aids. The ANC treasurer accepted funds from criminals since 94 and the top 6 in the ANC all know this or are complicit. Education results are 160 th out of 163 countries. Manual was silent on all the above.
Manual and the ANC keep comparing black (poor) and white (rich) to claim benefits - while blacks here are not worse off than their peer group in Moz, Zim and Angola.

All the state apparatus has been run down, this has caused those who can afford it to look for other options. IF the monies allocated to the said departments had been spent wisely then all of the citizens would have benefitted. Centralisation and patronage has ruined us. The ANC has made people lose faith in the vote or in agencies that protect their cause, once again the apathy created has played into the governing party's hand as fewer people vote.

Media indoctrination is still very strong when it comes to shaping people's opinions and actions in SA. I hear people saying "Oh, the ANC is corrupt" and whilst that is obviously true, it should be clearly understood that the ANC's main problem has always been racism. Corruption runs a second place.

So what do you know!!..not amongst his comrades that are now living overseas cashing in on their struggle credentials. . Mr. Manuel, we know what is wrong... the question stays... can an ANC or EFF Government deliver. After thirty years we now know that the new dispensation has been a dismal failure.

Inherited system? so what has been done to review it since your party came into power trevor? or is it easier to allow the system to be trashed?
He talks as if he wasn't there, as if he was not the driver of neo liberal policies, really spare us the crap about the system inherited before 1994.
I agree citizens must take responsibility for their everyday lives, but then what happens to all the taxes paid? these questions are systematic of the failure of the anc and how words achieve nothing compared to actions. Trevor distances himself from the reality that he was party to creating, frankly he speaks a load of crap.

Will never forget sometime in 1996 (I think it was) THE FINANCIAL Mail had on it's cover in HUGE letters "TAKE A BOW MR MANUEL"...
What a compliment!!! Says it all - Thabo Mbeki too was an outstanding man...
Sadly State Capture in the personage of Zuma came in and took over... Intimidation became the modus operandi, Mbeki and Manuel knew the stakes...
    Tender "hijacking" became a priority...
    Africa adieu.... 😢😢😢
