  • So how good is the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and what makes it a complicated roller coaster? In this video, I'll be talking about why the Big One is still my favourite UK roller coaster, why the claims of it being a monorail with no airtime are unjustified and also taking a look into some of the technical aspects of this coaster including three trains, the transfer track, how the weather impacts on it and much more.

I remember being at the pleasure bech in 1994 when this opened, I was only 8 and this thing looked twice as big as it does now, there was no infusion so it towered out of the park with nothing obscuring it's lines, the 1st drop before they changed it was so intense looking. It is a fun ride, the first drop is great, they could have made the whole ride alot better though.

The big one is only still relevant because sadly in the UK we don't have a track record of building big hypercoasters to compete with it. I don't even mind the roughness of the coaster I have more of an issue with the uninspiring dull layout.

Disagree, if coasters built in the 20’s and 30’s are still relevant with bigger more advanced rides around them it’d be the same for PMBO

Never ridden it, I've never been on an Arrow. The drop looks cool, the rest is maybe not so modern, but that's because it is an old ride. It totally fits with BPPB. They didn't have the space for a standard lay-out so what they did was great.

Get the big one on a calm, still, nighttime ride, after it has been running all day, and it absolutely flies round. You get multiple big airtime moments on these sort of rides, and the sense of speed is incredible. I think my best ride on it was on the last late night fireworks event of the 2019 season. It really is a ride that varies massively with your experience of it. I used to be in the 'meh' camp, but now I absolutely love it. The GP love it too, it remains the most iconic and well loved rollercoaster in the country I would say.

Big one is a unique hyper coaster IMO, it is like a 200ft wooden coaster due to it having more laterals than airtime and the first drop and the whole ride slams you around which is super fun.

    • @yourexperienceguide

when a mate rode it a few years before i did back in the 90s... he described it as an excellent first drop, then a fun-ish 2 min scenic ride back to the station around the park. And still holds - the anticipation and the views from the lift hill, the intensity of that drop in which ever seat you happen to be in (tho that back left seat is my personal fave for max thrill of being pulled down the drop) it's not my top ride at the park... but equally, it's one i'll be disappointed if i don't get to ride while are the park

This is my favourite UK rollercoaster but only if your in front row.
Earlier this year I went to blackpool pleasure beach for the 1st time and for the 1st ride I did the big one in the front row and as soon as the ride was over I knew it was my favourite UK rollercoaster.
I did it 10 times that day.
One of the times I did back row and it was awful I wouldn't recommend anyone to do it and if your only gonna be able to do it once then always do front row.
I'm hopefully going to go back again next year and I hope it's as good as I remembered it being.

I rode this first the first time in 10 years on 28/07/23. I went in it 4 times. Once on the front and three times on the back . In my opinion it’s the best coaster in the UK! Everything about it is amazing. On the back is by far the best place to sit as it rips you around and is pretty rough which I personally love. On the front it seems to just cruise around but offers amazing views. The nostalgia value and views it offers make it the ultimate 90’s thrill

The anticipation on the way up... that clicking sound.... dragging you up and up..... the breeze .... that Blackpool all around feeling..... your crunchy nut cornflakes followed by sausage, egg, bacon, tea, toast etc keeping you nicely fuelled... are we really this high? ..... a slight fear that something could go wrong.... the chatter of different excited accents all around - invariably including the shrieking sound of one or two young females..... everything below is now tiny ......... that brief surreal silence at the top as it all starts to tip over..... the silence quickly changes to thunder as you rapidly plummet earthwards powerless against the supreme forces of gravity .. wrapped inside the emotional compress of terror, excitement, survival and pleasure that can only be had right here.

I would like a B&M hyper AND for Big One to stay, and I don't think all this talk about UK never getting another hyper because we already have one is valid. A B&M would offer totally different experience and the obvious place would be Thorpe Park. They have the space at the back, the height allowances and there is nothing like it in the south, so I say bring it on. I think having a classic arrow at PB is important as they are becoming increasingly rare, plus all the coasters there are from different moments of history which is what makes the place so special.

Hey, love the video and I'd love to visit the UK someday and ride it. I want to offer a correction to something you said - Cedar Point is my home park, and unless something was changed this past summer (the Summer of COVID), Magnum XL-200 still runs three trains. At least every day I've visited, and I'm a pass holder. That's not to say that there hasn't been a day where it's operated only two, but generally it always operates all three. Always has. Now Gemini, the other big Arrow coaster in the park, used to operate three to a side - 3 red and 3 blue, but now it only operates 2 to a side. Corkscrew, Iron Dragon, and Mine Ride only operate 2 now. But Magnum still operates 3 regularly. At least every time I've been to the park.

The first time I rode the big one was back in 2018, late night riding, around 9pm in the dark. It was the tallest coaster I'd been on at the time and I was bricking it. Needed a nervous toilet break as I waited to get on... Just stick with it I thought... I made it on, enjoyed every moment, and we came flying into the brake run, yes the first e-stop brake run you spoke about... Oh no, another 10 minutes of waiting with my bladder already shot. I won't forget that experience quickly, and yes, I made it to the loo in the end :D

I rode this yesterday for the first time. It was the hottest day so bad timing but couldn't be helped. We got into the queue at 9:35am, and the trains were testing at that stage. Then they stopped, so we waited. The testing restarted with one staff memberin 2 trains, then an empty train was left on the lift hill for half an hour. The heat was stifling, no announcements or information from the operations team and still we waited. We were 3 trains from the top of the queue so we didn't want to leave the queue. It finally started running at 11:10. Everyone was exhausted with the heat by then but at least we got to ride. We rode mid-train and it was very fast and the views were amazing but I will say I was hugely disappointed as I experienced almost zero airtime. Maybe it was our mid-train position or because it was an early train. The operations were crap and I think that set the tone. It was down for most of the rest of the day then, maybe from the crazy heat, so at least we got to ride. What a pity. I'd re-ride if there was a walk-on but not otherwise. Once does the trick, we're back again today but Icon deserves the re-rides.

I love the Big One - it’s definitely not a top coaster for me, but I can really appreciate it for being unique and iconic. I think one of the reasons it gets so much unnecessary hate is because people try to compare it to something it isn’t. It was never supposed to have an intense, air time filled layout, so although it maybe could’ve done with a bit more air time, I don’t think you can really use those complaints against it too much.

I hadn't been to the park since I was a child so lots of memories came flooding back and seeing the Big One up close we just thought 'WOW!' No tamer than it was previously, the Monorail comments are such an unusual take on it.
