  • Holidaymakers don't appear to be too impressed with Blackpool as they have ranked the seaside town among the worst in the country. The resort was named a lowly 79th out of 88 coastal towns, with a score of 58%, which was compiled using 4,300 visitor ratings. They were asked to star-rate a number of criteria to generate an overall destination score - average hotel price, beaches, seafront/piers, food and drink, tourist attractions, scenery, shopping, peace and quality and value for money.

As a Blackpool resident born and bred my heart is really warmed by this video. It has been such a shame to see my town's ratings tank across the board over the last couple decades when we still have many great unique attractions and features each with its own interesting history, some spanning generations. Blackpool still booms when in season and in the height of summer you can barely walk down the length of the promenade without navigating a sea of people which is the best time to come here. We do have our fair share of problems like any other town and some areas are quite run down in need of attention and renovation but that has begun to change in recent years. There are still great things to see farther from the promenade like Bloomfield Stadium, home ground of my beloved team Blackpool FC, the Golf courses up towards the Hospital and within the great and popular Stanley Park also a grade II listing itself which deserves an entire video of its own which would be great to see. There is the historic Windmill that still stands right at the edge of the town off Mereside which you see as you come off from the Motorway. Plus we have such a vibrant and well known night life scene with pubs and clubs all across the town centre. I love Blackpool I have lived here for most of my 26 years and have a plethora of great memories here. To anybody on the fence on visiting here because they have heard bad things or seen bad reviews and ratings I implore you to give it a chance I am sure you will love it as I do and not be disappointed. Safe to say you have earned a new sub from me I look forward to seeing how else you showcase our great town so thank you very much ☺️

BTW, if you go to Blackpool, please be careful of sneaker-tides - the beach isn't even and the tide doesn't come in in a line, so you might think you're OK sat on the sand, but the tide is already "in" behind you, leaving you stranded. I've seen literally thousands of people stranded by that - and the RNLI rescue a lot of people who have been caught out.

I love Blackpool, and I have a real fondness overall for "proper" British seaside towns. My earliest holiday memory is probably going to Blackpool Pontins when I was 3 years old with my grandparents, although all I can really remember is that we bought a big bag of rock, and put it in a drawer in the chalet. When we came back later that evening, several hundred ants were having a feast.
I've no idea how many times I've been since, but I always try and visit when I'm up that way. When I was working in Bolton, I would go there to get dinner (at The Fish Factory) and just have a stroll down the prom. The Tower building looks fantastic now that they've restored the original arched doorways.
In all this time, I don't think I've ever been to Bonny Street market, so I might have to make an excuse for another visit before the end of this year. I know my son wants to visit again, as he loves old trams (we're near to Crich tram museum, and he'll berate you for not referring to the balloon tram by its proper title), but Tram Town was closed on the days he visited. He also loves shipwrecks and Spitfires (which he doesn't actually know is there).
For people to say that Blackpool is the worst seaside town, to me, just says that they've not been to many other places. I'm realistic enough to see how seaside towns aren't what they were, but Blackpool is in better shape than a lot of the others. I had some fantastic holidays at Great Yarmouth when I was young, but nowadays it's a shell of how it used to be.
Morecambe has had a lot of regeneration to make it look nice, but there's not a lot to do. I used to go for a day trip every year at the end of camping in the Lake District, and back then it still had Frontier Land, Bubbles, a lot more arcades, it even still had the pier when I first went.
The south coast towns have faired far better than places like Bridlington or Mablethorpe.
Part of why I love British seaside towns is the architecture, the atmosphere, and the overall aesthetic. The ornate cast iron railings, the tall, bay-fronted hotels, the Victorian shelters (where I spent many a time eating chips in the rain), even the bulky concrete and gravel sea defences. They're all things that were unique to seaside towns (well, they were to a Midlander like me).
And of course, the piers. You've got to have a pier to be a proper seaside town. It's such a shame that we've lost so many, some to storm, but mainly due to neglect until they become too uneconomical to repair and maintain. And, of course, the fact that that they're so flammable (I'm assuming that they're built mainly from straw).
Being at "the seaside" isn't the same as being on holiday. It's a thing of its own, and shouldn't be compared with holidaying in France, or Florida, or Faliraki. It's a culturally British thing, where we roll up our trousers for a paddle in the sea, burn our mouths trying to eat a donut that we're literally just watched someone pull out of the oil 5 seconds before, and handle more two pence pieces in one afternoon than the last five years combined.
It's a change in culture that's hit places like Blackpool hard. At 6:45 you refer to the beach as being "super busy", but to my brain, it's anything but. I remember going in the early 80s (when the Doctor Who exhibition was still underneath Woolworths), and the beach would be packed with thousands of people and you'd be weaving between deckchairs and windbreakers to find a space. Back then, social distancing meant being at such a close distance, you had to be social with the family next to you.
Nowadays being on the beach isn't seen as an attraction in itself. Every morning my poor Mum would have a hyperactive little Digby jumping out of bed and asking if we can go to the beach, and she'd have to say not today, as it's raining. Can we go up The Tower then? No because it's raining and the top is covered in black clouds.
We need to bring back a culture of enjoying the seaside for what it is, rather than presenting it as a lesser alternative to somewhere abroad.

As someone who’s from Ireland where the only enjoyment is how many farmlands there are, going to Blackpool was an incredibly fun experience. It’s no Disneyland, but it doesn’t need to be. It is its own thing and what makes it stand out.
Is it a tad bit out of date in most places? Yes. But ironically the charm is its archaic appeal. If someone says it’s the worst holiday resort, then I wouldn’t want to be friends with them.

I'd agree it's bad. I love Blackpool because I live in Lancashire and have fond childhood memories of it. I can't bring my own children there, because the problems surrounding the poverty in the area is spilling out into the tourist areas. Massive drug and homeless problems in Blackpool right now. Not to mention, if you're here with your kids after about 5pm, the stag do's and hen nights will be about, drunkenly waving large inflatable penises around.

I recall becoming stuck in the cabin lift in the early 1970s as a result of overloading. There were two 'cabins' running in a single shaft so, when our lift became stuck mid-way up, the other cabin was lowered to be alongside our cabin and a side panel in each was opened to allow half our passengers to move across, thereby releasing the mechanism! 'Though I appreciate such things can't be permitted nowadays, it's still a shame that the lift's been unused for so long.

    Excellent video Tim.
Thanks for showing my home town in such a good light.
The thing is of course, the more people who visit anywhere, the more possibility that someone who may not be as good as they might be, may be about.
Not excusing it, just maybe explaining it.
There are up to 20 million people a year that visit, so might the odd "dodgy Herbert" appear? Yeah, probably.
But put it in context to how many just come and have a great time. And I have run businesses here that dealt with on average, a quarter of a million visitors per year and I can honestly say, that I never had any issues with any of them.
Perhaps I was lucky, but I think the law of averages might discount that hypothesis.
Plus show me a town as spread out along seven miles of golden sands and as long established as Blackpool is, that doesn't have some less than ideal streets, a couple of blocks back.
Go a couple of blocks behind Las Vegas and you'll see stuff that makes Blackpool's look like paradise!!
Yes, Blackpool has its problems, but within the constraints of it's budget, they really are doing as well as they can to rectify some of these.
    Is it perfect or posh?
    Absolutely NOT!
But it doesn't pretend to be.
It's brash and kitschy and a bit risque, but up to 20 million a year, can't all be wrong, can they?
If that's your thing, you'll have a ball.
    Cheers.

I do like Blackpool! But it can be rough round the edges especially off the promenade. I like how Blackpool has got something for everyone with it’s numerous attractions. I’m just not a big fan of the the central beach but if you go further up the coast the beach is nicer in my opinion. The Blackpool Tower an iconic attraction but yes never again will I visit it during the school holidays it was packed when I did it Wednesday just gone. North Pier is Also my favourite as I like how traditional it is!

I've just come back from a week there with my 7year old and I have to say we loved it. My only comment that would be bad is the amount of rubbish left on the beach after the aircraft show last weekend. We arrived Monday and came home yesturday. We did the pleasure beach sea life tower and zoo. And we have decided to go back next year to do some of the stuff we didn't get chance to including Riley's believe it or not. Love your videos

I love your worst rated series, i am reluctant to say how much I enjoy a lot of the places you have visited as it may improve their reputation! I dislike places that are busy, and the ‘worst rated’ places tend to be more quiet and are great to explore. They always have an epic greasy spoon or fish and chips and you tend to be amongst locals which is nice.

*Chris the burger guy told me/us this when we came down for the Blackpool v Rangers game recently as to why Blackpool was busy but also in such a bad state (paraphrasing but you get his point) "social changes, look around we have a very very busy day in Blackpool but the 1st and 2nd generation from India, Pakistan and Africa are coming here but they DO NOT SPEND MONEY HERE, they come from Manchester etc for the day but bring along their own food and drink", and when you think about it it makes sense, its different cultures as we know it has impacted the pub trade massively being non drinkers or just not visiting a pub, but sadly it is financially impacting the resorts*

Lived in Blackpool since I was 3 years old so pretty much all my life and I don't want to leave. Blackpool has everything that other seaside resorts have and more. We have the illuminations, air shows, the comedy carpet, the tower, the tower circus and dungeons, grand theatre, winter gardens, Stanley park with all of it's features, the golden mile, heritage and modern trams on a 12 mile long tram line, massive hotels, the sandcastle waterpark, massive casinos, the promenade and it's features, the pleasure beach theme park, our amazing town centre, the houndshill shopping centre, massive amusement arcades, the 3 distinct piers, the massive golf courses and lakes. There is so many events and things to do in Blackpool all the time, I often take it all for granted. But there's loads more which I can't be bothered to type out. A few chavs and druggies shouldn't ruin the holidaymaking experience of visiting this amazing town. Some people let it down, but there's people like that in every part of the country. The town isn't run down, it isn't deprived. If you live here you would understand. I never want to move out of Blackpool lmao. I love it here.

We mainly went for Madame Tussauds as they had a DanTDM display on, but we spent a few days there and did the Tower, the Dungeons, the amusements, arcades, beach, had dinner in town. Overall we enjoyed it and although it was MEGA busy and overwhelming at times we were pleased to have experienced it. Oh, and some of the best chips we've ever had.

Blackpool encompasses all that a traditional family holiday is all about. We live in Blackpool & often walk down the promenade when we’re not hiking the fells. It does get a bad rep, however, the majority of trouble & rubbish everywhere is caused by visitors! We have walked down the prom late evening in the summer & the beaches are covered in rubbish left behind. The entire prom is getting a facelift so that’s positive. Reference transport, a family ticket from Blackpool transport is £13 which covers unlimited travel on both buses and trams.

I live in Blackpool for 11 years this September. ( Watford 30 Telford 10)
If anyone has any questions I’m happy to help if I can.
What I can say is I’ve seen a lot of change in the years since I’ve been here and yes there are some places that are not desirable. But I can say that of any place.
Just a mile or two away is st Anne’s and it’s more upper class. There also a few cocktail bars, there another Area next to st Anne’s called lytham. I would say it’s the most expensive part of the area. But very pretty at Christmas.
Best fish and chip shop is on Harrowside, which you can eat in or take away, it’s 5-10 min walk straight down from the mirror ball. This fish and chip shop has been voted the best by the locals.
St Anne’s has a lovely restaurant called ego. If you look them on line your see they do offers for different times a day.
The best show for fun is Viva Blackpool. Just a lot of fun.
The lights have got better each and every year I’ve been here. Please sometimes stop at the roundabout where all the shops have stop, but if you carry on up the road your see more spectacular lights and a few you can walk round. There more for children , but they are huge.
Don’t book any Britannia hotel except for the one that used to be the Hilton.
If you have money and want to go for a massage or facial, the best is at the spar at the football ground. Shannon is marvellous, but with everything you get what you pay for.
If you come self catering, there is an Aldi quite close to the main part of town and it’s also next to a very big the range.
Apart from big supermarkets there are not many petrol stations that are on their own. There is one just round the corner from the cinema.
If you are unwell there a drs anyone can go to . It’s open 364 days a year. It’s called Whitegate medical Centre. It’s on the Second floor to the left. You don’t have to been from the Area to be seen. It does get busy and urgent cases are always seem first. I’ve been there and there lovely and try there best for you.
Well I hope if you come to Blackpool you have a good time and pack for all weather and it’s a good idea to bring your umbrella.

We did Blackpool twice during our holiday and it's not half bad. Beach is a lot cleaner than I remembered, must've had it all done.
Pier has a cheap and decent cafe, kids loved some of the attractions and Coral Island is pretty neat if you want all ur best arcades! Only place where I've found Luigi's Mansion arcade! Not sure if I'd wanna stay in Blackpool overnight, but I enjoy the towns close by and visiting there 1-2 times during our week holiday.
