- In the midst of the Great Depression, something magical was happening on the silver screen. The mesmerizing allure of Hollywood became a beacon of hope and escapism for millions. This era contains some of the best actresses of all time, many of whom are Academy Award winners, as well as classic film stars.
These ladies possessed a rare blend of talent, beauty, and charisma that defined an era. Here are the 25 most gorgeous Hollywood’s actresses of the 1930s!
No Vivien Leigh?
Not all of these women were beautiful but they were all talented. I can't believe Greer Garson wasn't included here.
she wasn't included because she actually looked female with full lips.
@mytoosense
Possibly, a more likely reason is that her premiere role of Cathy in “Goodbye Mr. Chips” wasn’t until 1939. That led to her being more of a star of the 1940’s than the 1930’s.
@courtneyraymer6586
Clara Bow was included and she was much more a silent film star who barely made a dent in the 30s.
I agree! She and the studio were trying,in vain, to save her flagging career.
And they were all dudes
Hedy Lamar and Gene Tierney the 2 most beautiful of all!!!
"It's Hedley!"
I was wondering when someone would catch that!
I absolutely agree. I found out about a lady named Veronica Lake who is pretty too. Just goes to show that pretty actresses are always on discovery.
Vivian Leigh was left out.
Edith Shearer, was more accurately known, as Norma Shearer.
Myrna Loy was fantastic in Best Years of Our Lives. One of my favorite movies. She had style and grace plus in that movie she had personality. Not just a beautiful woman but an accomplished actress as well. Buried in Montana.
she was good but frankly physically repulsive Nominal role in best years really not worth hype
Thrilling to see Jean Arthur so prominent - # 2 - on your list. She was gorgeous all over the place - her voice in and of itself, a great contribution to movie history.
Natural beauty ❤don’t see that anymore
Why do people keep insisting that the stars of the 20s, 30s and 40s had natural beauty? Of course they were nice looking and some were drop dead beautiful, but they were all photographed by professional, artistic talent who understood lights and shadows and how they played on the plains of a face. Their makeup was professionally applied and they were dressed by the top designers. Some bleached their hair. Some even had plastic surgery.
Don't get me wrong, these years were my favorite as far as movies go. I love watching them on the screen.
All are indeed beautiful ladies.
No cosmetic surgery back then.
Actually it was more common than you think. Here's some.
Rita Hayworth
electrolysis treatments to modify her hairline and achieve a higher forehead.
Marilyn Monroe
rhinoplasty , chin implant
Dean Martin
rhinoplasty
Burt Lancaster
multiple facelift
Clark Gable
ears pinned back
Mary Pickford
facelift was left unable to smile because she did it when she was too young.
Frank Sinatra
facelift and jowl surgery
Joan Crawford
facelift and breast augmentation
Gloria Swanson
rhinoplasty
John Wayne
neck lift, facelift and eyelid surgery
Sylvia Sydney deserved to be on this list.
Where is Heddy Lamar?
Oh yeah, Irene Dunne--my #1 pick. Her work in the pre-Code era is evocative--most notably, her depiction of Rae Schmidt in 1932's "Back Street". Heartbreakingingly beautiful. Miss Dunne was nominated five times for the Best Actress Oscar, but no wins. Not even an honorary Oscar. Such a shame.
Hedy Lamar?
Loretta young had a tv show where she walked through the door in the set. I always wondered if the door would not open! 😂
Donna Reed I think was a star in the 1930s? She was a natural for the role of Mary Hatch in It’s A wonderful life.
You forgot to mention Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland!
WHY would you put A CHILD in this list of GEORGEOUS actresses? That is creepy. As a child, she would be pretty or cute, but GEORGEOUS??? That is for a mature person. Would you tell your friend that his 8 year old daughter is georgeous??? Would you even say anything about their childs appearance??? Shirley Temple does not belong on this list. Some of these women are just on here for being who they are and who are more known in pop culture. There are many more you may not have heard of that are really georgeous. Bette Davis was a good actress but was she georgeous, not really. If she weren't Betty Davis, would you look twice if you saw her on the street? No, you wouldn't. Same can be said for most of these actresses.
I just mentioned last night Margaret Sullavan never makes the list. And here she is!
You forgot Betty Boop!
What about Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Eartha Kitt?
if nothing else, not of the 30's
Barbara Stanwyck? Really? No Hedy Lamar or Viviene Leigh?
Stanwyck is my favorite especially her early movies. She played some real 'dames.' Even a burlesque queen in "Ladies of Burlesque" (1943) (from a book written by Gypsy Rose Lee), but I agree that Hedy Lamar was one of the most beautiful women ever. But again, her major fame came in the 40s.
@@auapplemac2441 loved Stanwyck too. Just so many beauties it’s unbelievable. Yes Lamar was exquisite. I still watch all the old stuff just to see them all. Ooh, Irene Dunne, Life With Father, my all time favorite movie. A young Elizabeth Taylor, I can’t think of the actors name who played “Father” I do know I love him, lol.
Questioning Stanwyck's beauty, you may as well question the inherent beauty of the Statue of Liberty
She was really more of a B actress than A-lister but Ann Sheridan was a beauty too! She was in movie "Angels with dirty faces" and other movies of the 1930's and 40's.Think you also forgot one of my favorites Hedy lamaar too! Good job with this list though.
Lucille Ball got her start in the 30s. I don’t see her in the video
Aster’s voice may have been low because of smoking. Most smokers have husky voices.
Mae West was anything but beautiful, she always looked like an overly made up old lady to me, even when young.
Same. She was considered a sex symbol for sure but only for her character. I don’t think she was ever regarded as beautiful.
No Vivian Leigh? No Gene Tierney? No Ingrid Bergman?
Aside from Gone with the Wind, I believe most of Leigh's movies in the US were made in the 40s along with Tierney and Bergman.
Ummmm, "most gorgeous" and no mention of Vivien Leigh, best Academy Award actress for "Gone With The Wind," and "Streetcar Named Desire," noted for her stage and screen talent as well as the most lauded movie of all time? Methinks you need to reconsider?
Who makes up these lists? im mean Clara Bow no 1! Shirley Temple !! Mary Astor 25th (with those eyes come on Myrna Loy shou;d be top ten and havent you guys hears of Heddy Lamar?
BEFORE plastics......
Bette Davis brilliant actress but never thought her beauty was in the same league as most of the top 25 here, we all have different views so i always put Greta Garbo as number 1 i remember Joan Crawford and Orsen Welles said no one could match Garbo,s beauty , fast forward to 2023 what modern actress would make this list,,,,,,, none
Those actresses had 'faces' and a presence on the screen. They all looked different. Today's group all look the same to me.
@garychopping2184 I couldn't agree more, about Garbo. Her glorious facial features and the light her face flooded the screen with ... Incomparable, simply.
I don't think gorgeous is the right word. They are important for their talent more than their looks.
Did Irene ever get “Dunn”? 😊.
No Barbara Pepper???
Definitely Clara bow
Betty Boop was based on Clara Bow. Now you know, boo-boop-de-doo! 😊
Little Ester Lee Jones was the first .
@@colinlobo474 Helen Kane.
They all have larger noses, and a definite European look . They look like they came from the same countries, almost.
Well it is Hollywood, USA
Beauty is in the persons own view, as pressured by others.
🤔 Beauty is and will always be in the eye 👁🗨 of the beholder !..
Nobody is pressuring anyone.
Clara Bow? She was a silent film actress. What about Kay Francis?
Clara Bow was one of the top stars of the 20s and actually retired in the early 30s. You're right about Kay Francis. Should have been included.
Ditto
Hedy Lamar?🤨
Mary Astor was never pretty let alone beautiful? What was the criteria? Ginger Rodgers? Absolutely beautiful!
Astor WAS pretty in her youth
all a matter of opinion.
Betty Davis wore out her men in love making!😮 She sometime has 3 men at once and still was not satisfied!
Whoops! It's Bette.
Wow never knew that.
as the old comic says: how do you know? was you there, Charlie?
