So, as a MC's fan, you should know that her voice always evolved through the years, and that even before she released her very first album "Mariah Carey", her voice had already changed; if you don't believe me, just listen to her singing Weakness of the body. ;)
This is ridiculous... People are focusing on the run at 0:20 like Christina could sing the C5 at 0:18 without shouting. Like, don't ignore the most important bit people. Just listen to the studio recording of Christina singing 'At Last', and the C5s in that song, and then listen to this C5 and 'Weakness of the Body' that Mariah sang at 16 also. @MarilynFinland It also raises questions such as why would a 16-year-old Mariah be recording an old song like At Last? For what purpose? @MarilynFinland I'd love Mariah to talk more about her early training and what exactly she used to do to train her voice because it would be interesting to know. But IMO it's very unlikely that Mariah didn't have proper training before the age of 16 cos only a year later she recorded "Weakness Of The Body" (and at 18 she was signed). It's clear that she was already a very talented singer; she had great control, range and stylistically she was, you know, getting there.
It can't be Christina because if it was her, she would be only 6. So my conclusion is it could be Mariah and it kind of sounds like her but definitely not Xtina.
Jordon Wong That's because it's not from 1986, it for sure is Christina. She does this song almost the same way every time when she performs it, which is understandable because it's pretty hip. The tonality is like Christina's, Mariah's is far more breathy.
nahh, I thought christina at first but im convinced it's Mariah. The "yeahh yeahh yeahh" part at 0:19 is similar to christina's voice but you can still tell it's early mariah. Listen to clips of Christina as a teenager on youtube....you can tell this is mariah
Everyone is free to think whatever they want. In my opinion the clip is way too short to be absolutely certain that this is in fact a 16-year-old Mariah singing the song. Could be. But the only part that I think is "Mariahesque" is the "yeah" part. Then again pretty much any semi-talented female singer could easily stylize the "yeah" that way. Besides many female singers, when they sing in their mix, have a very similar tone too. I personally don't think it's her.
@obozevalka Exactly! I wouldn't bother arguing with them but it's infuriating how they want to rewrite history based on their own imagination.... I don't know how many different ways I can say it, this Mariah demo has been floating around since the 1990s, Christina was never mentioned until the last year or so when ignorant people started mouthing their uninformed opinions.
Sorry, but I really think this is Aguilera. I love both singers and the voice is definitely Aguilera. Mariah's tone is completely different to Aguilera.
@dameapham Uhh, no......I think by saying it's not Mariah Carey, that basically means it can't have been done in 1986 either, considering that Christina was 6 years old, as you pointed out. Read between the lines.

0:19 ----> 0:24 this's clearly Mariah Carey's voice. However, i'm not sure that she covers "at last". May be, this's one of her songs that she haven't brought it out yet!
It's Christina, I remember she did a special on VH1 and they showed her singing this song in a room full of critics, music producers before her 1st Album came out. This is NOT Mariah.
You can tell by the vibrato thats is NOT sweet Mariah Carey. Mariah has never covered Etta James. However, Christina is known for this cover. Anyone with a good ear can tell the difference right away.
Keep in mind, she would be what, 16 years old? So her voice would obviously be a bit different. Either way, it sounds pretty good, and that's all I really care about.
I think it's her... it sounds just like her in the first DVD/Video she put out. Listen to her sing the Aretha Franklin cover "Don't Play That Song For Me"... it's all there!
@Videodude1231 its not Mariah man. i've spent 20 years of my life listening and trying to sing like Mariah, this is Christina. i don't know how to put it in music lingo like you do,but i know Mariah's voice.
@obozevalka but maybe they took christina's version from her house, made it sound like it was old and claim it was mariah in 1996, i mean there are ways ,but i think it is mariah.
@littlegreenbag ahahaah!!! and yet and still that is christina ^_^ and im not argueing i am simply haveing an open convo on youtube, lol KISSES DAHHHLING ;-V
Agreed, although this does sound a little bit like Kelly Clarkson. I hope its Mariah. It shocks me that there is no unreleased Mariah stuff out there really, apart from like one or two tracks.
you're wrong. ^_^ it isn't Mariah. listen to the undertones carefully. Had Mariah so much as attempted to render this song,it'd would have become a hit single and would've made it on the track-list of her first record. i mean look at 'I'll Be There' with Trey Lorenz, it was an impromptu performance at one of her first live performances in 1992. it became so big that they actually had to release the whole show as an album - 'MTV Unplugged EP'.
It's a bit hard to say whether it's not her tone or not because the volume is so low and the quality sucks but it sounds closer to Christina than Mariah (to my ears anyway).
ok so it may not have been impromptu, my syntax was erroneous. what i was trying to say was that, It was a strategy on Sony Music's part to prove to the world that Mariah Carey could really sing live, since she had been declining to tour up until then. it was her first full live performance/ tour-ish. Her rendition of 'I'll Be There' is the sole reason for Sony Music releasing the whole thing as an album. the song went on to become her 6th no.1 single on the Billboard charts.
I don't think it's Mariah. The beginning low notes are terrible and off key. Especially because at :15 the low notes are sharp, weak, and terrible. And in weakness of the body and her debut her low notes were 100x better than this.
this is mariah if people knew anything she use to sing lower and more "plain" at first long before her actual career started.go listen to her america the beautiful in the basketbal stadium.
I'm sure it's Mariah's voice; she sounded a little bit different when she was younger, but it's still her texture voice especially at 0:17, it clearly sounds like her. Whatever, it doesn't sound like Christina's voice at all. The vocals on the video are too sweet, smooth and rough to be Christina's. I'm 100% sure of that.
Back in 2010 somebody asked her via Twitter if she has sung it and Mariah said that she hasn't!
Dejan Avramovic mariah did say she was forgetful 😂

How can you think that this is Mariah when it's clearly Christina ? All they did was turn down the volume and make a quick clip of it.
@mAnNyElLaTiNo33 she had got training since she was young. not after 16 here
@Videodude1231 its not Mariah man.
i've spent 20 years of my life listening and trying to sing like Mariah,
this is Christina.
i don't know how to put it in music lingo like you do,but i know Mariah's voice.
@obozevalka but maybe they took christina's version from her house, made it sound like it was old and claim it was mariah in 1996, i mean there are ways ,but i think it is mariah.
If it is her, then I absolutely LOVE 0:15-0:18!
Its hard to tell. Its sounds like Mariah but there's no telling. People saying it IS or IS NOT are purely speculating.
Is this really Xtina; if so she did sound a lot like Mariah O.O Never heard the similarities but here it's apparent. That lower is killin me
THIS IS MARIAH CAREY. LISTEN TO HER VISION OF LOVE. its an exact same voice.
Wannabe not, both amazing just that Christina hasn't ever lost her touch.
@littlegreenbag ahahaah!!! and yet and still that is christina ^_^ and im not argueing i am simply haveing an open convo on youtube, lol KISSES DAHHHLING ;-V
Oui, c'est vrai que le "yeeeah" de la fin aurait pu être de Christina, mais ce n'est pas la voix de Christina justement.
Yes. Thank you. Clear distinction. I don't understand the debate.
Agreed, although this does sound a little bit like Kelly Clarkson. I hope its Mariah. It shocks me that there is no unreleased Mariah stuff out there really, apart from like one or two tracks.
you're wrong.
^_^
it isn't Mariah.
listen to the undertones carefully.
@supersallyjackson its not about octaves its about delivering and Christina can deliver like no one else...so suck on that
ok so it may not have been impromptu, my syntax was erroneous.
what i was trying to say was that,
It was a strategy on Sony Music's part to prove to the world that Mariah Carey could really sing live, since she had been declining to tour up until then.
it was her first full live performance/ tour-ish.
Her rendition of 'I'll Be There' is the sole reason for Sony Music releasing the whole thing as an album.
the song went on to become her 6th no.1 single on the Billboard charts.
This sounds like Christina, not Mariah.I believe she did the backgrounds for the brenda song though.
How can the vocals be smooth and rough? Those are two complete opposites. Christina's real voice is naturally sweet and smooth.
It's Christina
I don't think it's Mariah. The beginning low notes are terrible and off key. Especially because at :15 the low notes are sharp, weak, and terrible. And in weakness of the body and her debut her low notes were 100x better than this.
this is mariah if people knew anything she use to sing lower and more "plain" at first long before her actual career started.go listen to her america the beautiful in the basketbal stadium.
@stardusth2o Thanks Cade :) I use Cyberlink Power Director 9.
