Yes, she already had developed a full-bodied voice by the age of 20, that's crazy. Most singers take DECADES to develop the voice Mariah had in this video. I just wish she kept it this rich and full FOREVER. This is her BEST voice type ever, and VERY rare to find in popular music. Every soprano in pop today sounds PAPPER THIN and NASAL (outside of Pink and Beyonce).

This was her first major performance before ANY televised ones - you can see how raw and nervous she is and yet she still gives one of the best vocal performances I have EVER heard. The beginning of a legendary, highly influential career and Michael was spot-on in predicting her career trajectory. An unparalleled voice and it's a privilege to be able to watch the start of it. I know her voice (when she had one) like the back of my hand. She has sung and/or manufactured some incredible vocals in the studio, but she is far from one of the best vocalists of all time. She is, however, one of the most successful. She is also the greatest catfish singer I've ever witnessed. Her voice died in her late thirties, but she continues to fool millions of people. She still has a great ear (for music) and great legs. I will give her that much.

I really wish Mariah appeared on the album version. No offense to Patti LaBelle, but Mariah knocks this out of the park and this probably would've been a mega hit in 1990/1991.
And there's so many more of her other performances not yet shown to the public like most of her daydream tour which were all professionally filmed. I remember Mariah said she would try to find them years ago but nothing was released. I hope we'll be able see them in our lifetime 🥲

Mariah may have been at her vocal peak technically in 95-96 but her vocals from debut and emotions era just had this raw soulful passion that gives me the feels still till this day.
Technically speaking, her vocal prime was in 1993-1995 and then 2003. But yes, she was very soulful between 1990-1992. It really speaks of her versatility and range as a singer.

The rawness and husky voice come from smoking
She changed her vocal placement in 1992. She started resonating her belts in her mask, so she lost that deep power chesty belt sound.
Then again in 1995/1996 she started changing her head voice to sound airier and less full, she also started adopting a girlier brighter upper tone. Listen to Daydream Tour in Rotterdam/Tokyo for a few examples.
In 1997 her voice deepened due to stress during her divorce 😢

Much like Britney Spears it’s clear Mariah was more comfortable singing lower in her natural tone but they had her on overload singing high notes all the time live and in studio and that takes a toll especially when it’s not her comfortable range. She’s not like Sohyang where she can sustain G5’s. Mariah is a sprinter not a marathon runner.
Everyone’s talking about that whistle note but the thought of a 19/20 year old achieving that riff/all of those very specific notes that can go off key so easily at 6:00 is such an indicator of her incredible ear and musicianship so early on

You can tell Michael KNEW he was witnessing history in the making. The fact that he said that if he sung the song with Mariah it would have been a hit for 17 weeks was a HUGE compliment. My only wish is that this could have been released as both a studio version and as a stripped down acoustic version. Legendary performance by the both of them, dare I say worthy of a grammy!?!?
A studio version of this duet would've knocked the Patti LaBelle version out of the park, and I mean that with no disrespect to Ms. Patti's phenomenal talent either.
They didn't have much chemistry. Both were too shrill and oversang. Streisand's version is the benchmark.

Seeing how the parts were switched in the Patti LaBelle version, and how he lets Mariah take the histrionics in the last chorus key change without overwhelming her, and letting her shine; the man is a class act gentlemen.
