The Talysh language (تالشی / Tolışə / Tолышә) is classified as a Northwestern Iranian language and is primarily spoken in the southern regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the northern parts of the Iranian provinces of Gilan and Ardabil.
The Gilaki language (گیلکی / Giləki) also belongs to the Northwestern branch of Iranian languages and is primarily spoken in Iran's Gilan Province.
Talysh and Gilaki belong to the Caspian branch of Northwestern Iranian languages, which are primarily spoken in northern Iran and south-eastern Azerbaijan.

As an Armenian, I love the minority Iranic languages like Gilaki, Talyshi, Tabari, etc. especially. There are so many similarities! Of course this applies to any Iranic language but these northern ones especially are so "familiar" in sound to me. Sending love to my Iranian brothers and sisters! Helen, Jeyhun, and Kenul were awesome. Great video as always Bahador jan!

It's really cool to hear similarities between different iranian languages.
I think this must be Sorani or some other Southern Kurdish dialect because in Kurmanji we say Keçık for girl. rûnıshtın for to sit and bıçe for go.

@@serdar3578 To be fair, both kurmanci and sorani, since i'm a speaker of both. There are varieties of kurmanci. Kij is in my mothers tongue, kurmanci from a certain areain bahdinan. But I know kec is the more common term.

The only difference is "wehşî" means hungry like an animal in Kurmanci Kurdish.

Thank you for such a wonderful release and for your attention to my native language. For a long time I have been interested in related languages, their speakers and the area of their existence. And I must admit that I understood some words in gilaki even before dear Konul and Jeyhun. 😊 It turns out that we are even much closer than I thought. Thanks to friends and this episode, I opened your channel.
I am half Kurmanji and half Dimili Zaza from Siverek. I speak mostly Kurmanji but also know some Dimili. I heard allot of words similar. For example bıshi in Talysh is like Kurmanji bıçe for go. Uyeh in Gilaki is like uca in Dimli. Or jîr in Gilaki is very similar to jêr in Kurmanji and both mean down.
In Kurmanji + Dimli both we use pird for bridge, keçık in Kurmanji and Keynek in Dimli for girl. I am not sure but I think in Sorani Kurdish they use Kiji for girl like Gilaki Kija.

But the same Herodotus also mentions clearly that Persians speak Persians and their language is so close to the Scythians' language and when a Persian and a Scythian want to communicate they don't need a translator cuz they understand each other just fine so 2 things come to my mind
1. If they abandoned their language according to Herodutus as you say so then what type of language he describes that is so close to the Scythians?
2.If Scythians' language was so close to the Persians language as Herodutus mentions so they probably were both from the same ancestry and heritage so the Pan-turk claims about the Scythian's Turkish heritage is nothing but bullshit and of course all of these are accorded to the same Herodotus you mentioned.
And also Herodotus whom you mentioned was living in southern Anatolia (modern day Turkey) in Halicarnasus city and he was living in a time when you claim everything back then belonged to the Turkish people and yet he was Greek

Yes all of Azerbaijan's native language was Pahlavi (Northwestern Iranian) called "Old Azeri" (Old Azeri was Iranian not turkish)...which the remnants of it there today are Talysh, Tati, Kurdish

Bahador! thanks for this, man. I'm a Gilak, and I'm very flattered that you finally did this. And I'm very glad that I'm seeing these young ladies living abroad are so good at Gilaki.
Talysh has three main dialects: Northern, Central, Southern. Central, and Southern dialects are only existed in Iran, Gilan province.
Gilaki has three main dialects as well: BiyəPəs(in the West of the SepidRud), BiyəPish(in the East of the SepidRud), and Dəyləmi which is spoken in Western and Southwestern mountainous areas.
But both of these languages are more like two dialect continuums. They differ a little bit from one region to the next one.
There's one important thing; Tabari people, people of Mazandaran and Gorgan, call their language Geleki, and I can mostly understand them. Today's linguists say that Gilaki is spoken across the Southern coast of Caspian sea, from Western Gilan to Southeastern Golestan.

I'm also a Gilak and I speak the Daylamite dialect of Gilaki (aka Galeshi) wich is spoken in mountainous and foothill regions of eastern Gilan and western Mazandaran.

Hi Bahador jan. I am a multi-lingual guy from north of Iran (I live in Europe now). My father speaks and Kurmanji (Kurmancî) Kurdish and my mother is from Talysh region of Gilan. Since I know Kurdi and seen my mother's side speaking Talysh, I know there are extreme similarities between at least Kurmanji dialect of Kurdi and Talysh. Words such as "ez" (من), "jiyan, jin" (زندگی), "zanin" (دانستن), "xelk" (مردم), "gel" (گروه - ملت - دسته), "roj" (روز) and many more that I have heard from speakers of both languages are examples. It would be interesting to see these in a video, too.
Also, I like this type of videos since it allows us Iranians to have a better sense of "why we are one nation in thousands of years despite our apparent differences, etc." even regardless of where the border is drawn. Iranians should know that in our roots, we are one people.

Very interesting comment from Jeyhun about the Scandinavian terms. In Swedish it's kvinna. This is an Indo-European cognate shared by many languages, even outside of Scandinavia. In Armenian, it is "kin", for example.
Interesting I’ve also noticed Gilaki and Talyshi are the only Iranian languages that call wolf as verg which is similar to nordic varg. Indeed there are other similar words between Caspian and Nordic languages as they’re both Indo European but those words are usually similar between other Iranic languages as well.

@@galdalf6558 Zaza-Gorani is Minor-Kurdish. Kurmanji-Laki is Major-Kurdish. There is no rule an ethnicity has to speak one language. DNA tests prove Zazas are not related to Shomalis so cope harder

So happy to see you have finally made a video on Gilaki. It was also nice to see my friend Jeyhun he is very informed in different dialects of Talyshi. I also speak Biē-pesh (western) Gilaki. The girls are well informed tho they have a strong Persian accent (they don’t speak like natives) and they do talk about the æ sound however they can’t properly pronounce it either. Interesting similarities with Juhuri (Judeo-Tat), which is also mainly spoken in Azerbaijan like Talysh. Juhuri is very much a variety of Persian though. It's very important to do more to preserve these languages which have sadly been diminishing.
I think the judeo-tats have mostly left to Israel right?
I had suggested to bahador to make a johuri video. Johuri vs persian, or johuri vs gilaki. I hope he does it one day.

@@siyamaktaherxani8367 I didn't say don't make a video about Tats of Iran. But I think Juhuri is more interesting, because they have been isolated from other Iranian languages for many generations. They have different religion, and pretty much no connection to today's Iran.

I live in Baku and my parents have never spoken talysh language, because they don't know. I don't know because of this, either. As an Azerbaijani turk I really enjoyed this video. Bahador, you are the pioneer of introducing this beautiful languages and their culture worldwide. I hope Talysh and Gilaki languages will be taught in Iran like Azerbaijan aswell. I'm aware that learning just a couple of books is not enough for developing of these unique languages. However, it may be an initiation to go further. We must protect mother tongues in Iran at least like what Azerbaijan have done by now. Again I'm emphasizing that even strives of the Azerbaijani part is not enough either.

@MOHAMMAD Amin Ehsani Dear friend, it's not about history or even genetics. It's about human rights. I'm generally agreed with you that Iranian population have a similar haplogroup and even history somehow. However, Turks have ruled about 900 years in this area and have an enormous impact on language and culture of Iranians. In contrast, Iranian have even more impact on turkic language and culture aswell due to Doerfer's investigations.
In contemporary era democracy is more prior than your facistic ideas. This is what it is. You must accept it. Now we have about 20 milion turks in Iran based on Statiscal Center of Iran. They have more sympathy on their actual language than a dead language related to centuries ago. Their mother tongue is what their parent and grandparent spoke.
Turkey or Azerbaijan is not the land of Turks.
Iran is not the land of Persians.
They are just some countries for their citizens. For instance, even if some Chinese people migrate to Azerbaijan they have the right to ask for their language and culture.
I accept Ancient Azeri language is our history aswell but give me a dictionary of just 10000 words (which is too low for a modern language) and I promise to learn it and teach it for the next generation.

People mostly learn their language in Iran from their parents but there are some books in highschool that teach about every province language history geography

Dear Bahador, "خایه" /xâje/ in Persian is also a cognate of "Egg" in English, "Uya" in Talysh, "Ovum/Ovo" in Latin, "Avgo" in Greek and so on. I realized it talking to my Swiss-German speaking friend when I heard her pronunciation of the word "Ei" and found how similar our pronunciations were (of course you drop the خ /x/ in German). Funny thing is in both Persian and German, the word can be used to refer to either eggs, or balls.

Great video, Bahador. I recently had encountered a kurdish speaking lady here in us and it seems kurdish is pretty similar to a dialect called Vanji which is spoken in Vanj in province of Badakhshan in Tajikistan.
It would be interesting to see the similarities between them.

Vanji is not really similar to Kurdish because Vanji was a former Pamiri language which got replaced by Persian. The similarities can be explained by the fact that Vanji (as a former east iranic language) share archaic features with some of the north-western iranic languages, also the Grammer of vanj is mainly based on Persian (another western iranic language).
It is interesting how the relationship between Caspian dialects is similar to the relationship between Kurdish dialects. In General the Northwestern Iranic branch can be divided into 2. major branches.
Group 1: Kurdish
Group 2: Caspian
Then you have some transitional languages/dialects like Balochi. Or Old Azari which is like a bridge between the Kurdish and Caspian groups.
Old Azari is very much like Talysh and Tati. In the past they were called Pahlavi.
@@IranAzadLoading Pahlavi was a name used for all Northwest Iranic tongues. Some South Kurdish variants are called Feili (Pahli) to this day. Old Azari would be somewhere inbetween. At the end of the day there has to have been a transitional language between Kurdish and Caspian groups.

And 10% Turkic. They are overall locals and primarily like acculturated Talysh and Kurds. A reminder Azerbaijan had once a massive Kurdish population and still has.

Lori is one of the closest languages to old and middle Persian
Boroujerdis do not speak lori, they speak farsi and use some lori words here and there. They have forgotten their language and should ne be represented as lori language since they speak farsi with an lori accent (even tough they are lors)

One question, what are the statuses of these language in 🇮🇷🇦🇿? Official in the region? De facto? Lingua franca? People assume only Persian and Azeri are used in the two countries
Azerbaijan government is close allies with Israel so they are against Iran and Iranian languages. Talysh is an Iranian langauge, with no status in Azerbaijan.

I am from Talesh, Gilan province In our taleshi, the eggs are called oue and ogle And suede down The girl is called Kineh and Kelah, and because I am in Gilan, I know that the Gilaks call Lako's daughter no, where and Mazeni becomes a girl.
Gilaki is an inflected and genderless Subject-Verb-Object language. The phonology has the same consonants as Persian, but different vowels. And by the way, in Gilan province, there are three main dialects ( Western Gilaki, Eastern Gilaki, and Galeshi ) but larger cities in Gilan have slight variations to the way they speak. These "sub-dialects" are Rashti, Rudbari, Some’e Sarai, Lahijani, Langerudi, Rudesari, Bandar Anzali and Fumani، Alamouti, Taleghani, etc...
I thought Fuman was partly Talysh...like the people in Masuleh. I should say it's split between Gilaki and Talysh
