Can Persian Speakers Understand Juhuri (Judeo-Tat)?

- Juhuri or Judeo-Tat is an endangered language spoken by the Mountain Jews, also known as Kavkazi Jews, the Jewish community of the eastern and northern Caucasus who trace their roots to the Jews of ancient Iran, dating back to the Achaemenid era and the time of Cyrus the Great. The language retains a lot from Medieval Persian, with later influence from other languages.
In this video we will take a look at how well modern Persian speakers from Iran and Tajikistan can understand the Juhuri language, with Batsion and Hilah representing Juhuri, and Chehrona, Alan, and Hossein as the participants from Tajikistan and Iran.

The Persian language (Farsi) is an ancient language which has had a huge amount of impact on other languages and cultures, mainly the Middle East, as well as Central and South Asia. Classified as one of the Western Iranian languages, Persian holds official status is Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, which it is also the native language of many minority Persian communities in other countries. Persian has strongly influenced many different languages, including numerous Turkic languages, as well as well as Armenian, Georgian, and many languages in the Indian subcontinent. Persian has a long history of literature and it was notable for being the first language in the Muslim world to break through Arabic's monopoly on writing. The Persian language has also influenced the Arabic language, although the impact of Arabic on Persian has been higher.

I come from mountain Jewish family from Azerbaijan. Thank you for this video! Love it! I have a lot of tadjiki students and since many of them don’t speak English yet I do communicate with them in juhuri since some worlds are similar and they understand me. They always smile back and giggle since they are 5 😊
I dream that the times will return when we Iranian peoples and Jews were the closest friends and always supported each other in difficult historical moments.

Wow, I was born and I currently live in Israel but some of my family comes from dagestan and used to speak Juhuri. Unfortunately for 3 generations now nobody in the family understands the language. It's great to see that people continue speaking and teaching this language
As a Kurdish I really enjoyed finding all the similarities between my own mother tongue & Judeo-Tat.
I hope the Tats of Caucasus can preserve & take care of their beautiful language❤.

Tat of Caucasus with talish is only western Iranic language in Caucasus countries also we have ossetian people and language they are Iranic but ossetian are Eastern Iranic language .
Don’t Jews consider their ethnicity Jewish, not the country they are from. Tats are Iranians, but the Jewish one probably consider themselves Jewish

I’ve been waiting for this video for so long. I’m half bukharian Jewish and half mountain Jewish, so the Bukharian video was very interesting for me, but I always wanted to learn more about juhuri since it’s spoken by the older generations only. Thank you so much for this!!
We are also Mountain Jewish! I find it so interesting to how forgotten we are in the Persian community. We are technically Persian and yet almost nobody in greater Iran has even heard of the Mountain Jewish People.

This is amazing!! As an Iranian I could understand some parts but still tough in some others, but I haven't gotten to the most difficult part yet I think. So in my opinion, Chehrona and Hossein figured out some difficult parts which become more clear when you hear the meaning. That was very good! Great job everyone. And my biggest respect to Bastion, Hilah and Alan for the work they're putting into saving languages. Thanks for sharing the links. I'll surely check them out.

I have always found Jewish languages interesting because they are so similar to their source language but have differences that make them that much more interesting. Yiddish and Ladino are for sure the best know but ever since I discovered Juhuri I have always found it wildly fascinating. So it obviously ended up on my "wish I could learn" list of languages (it's a very long list by now). Juhuri also has a fascinating orthography which again just makes it even more interesting. 6:55 (First part) I was before the garden / Pêşî baxçe bû / Could not translate.
8:42 (second part) Nothing but a couple words. Germiho which is Germ in Kurdish. Yekem means the first in Kurdish but kêm means a little.
13:13 "Kele merd" is Kalemêr or Pîremêr in Kurdish and it means Old man
13:42 Three years old grandchild / Nevî yê sê salî ...
13:40 Hold or huged / "Wergirt" is the word for grab or hold. Kucax as regional word means embrace but its Kurdish counterpart is Himbêzkirin.

It is an interesting phenomenon that "Syrxi" means Gold in Juhuri, but Red in other languages, because it is same with "Qizil", whish is Gold in Azerbaijani, but Red in many other Turkic languages.

I understood “me bist penç…” (in Indian languages bees panch = 20+ 5), “Ty ey gufdiri” because in Hindi we use guftagu (conversation).
guftegu is a persian loanword
@@Meffrgtikiii Yes, I have learned a little Persian to figure out how Urdu is formed on the chassis of Hindi. I also notice Persian words that pervade Marathi (especially relating to the military and administrative vocabulary). This phenomenon is similar to the mixture of Polish and German to form Yiddish.

"Gərm" is cognate with "warm".
So is "cənd" equivalent to "ceqədr"? I remember finding "ceqədr" near its answer "cəhel" in a Persian dictionary and musing that the same thing happens in Spanish: "cuántos" is near "cuarenta". I've never seen a Persian-Spanish dictionary though.

According to the familiarity that I have gained during my research about different languages, which includes different branches of the Kurdish language, most of the words, verbs and meanings in your sentences (in the collection of Kurdish languages) are much more understandable. Discovery in the field of linguistic etymology is very exciting and at the same time necessary to clarify historical facts.

in Tajikistan we say "tu che gufti" too, it's just same Iranian, but what she said "tu che guftãsi" is present continuous in northern dialect. She couldn't figure out this sentence.

I speak the Dari dialect of Persian and I was very happy to see how well I've understood some parts but I had hard time in some areas and could not figure out. Mashallah they have great in figuring out. It is always very nice to see efforts in keeping alive the mother tongue. Very big respect.
I just want to clarify to people who read these comments - Tajiks and Hazaras who Speak Persian, and collectively make up 3/5 of the population of Afghanistan, refer to their language as Farsi. It is a group of urbanized Pashtuns who moved to major Tajik/Farsi speaking cities such as Kabul, Herat, Balkh, etc. , they abandoned their tribal Pashto language and adopted the language of majority aka Farsi. However they refer to the language as Dari, and this has a political reason behind it, they wanna divide the Persian language on the basis of political borders - Dari the name for Persian in Afghanistan and Farsi the name of the same language in Iran. Pashton nationalists Who were installed as kings and rulers in Afghanistan by the British, in 1964 changed the name of Farsi to Dari in the text books and official documents just to establish a separate identity for themselves from Iran and Farsi.
@@allahmuhammad225 Spot on Allah Muhammad. I am someone from Balkh, the birth place of Mawlana Balkhi (Rumi), my people refer to our language as Farsi. When British and Russian Czars decided to create a buffer zone between their territories in the last two decades of 1800s, fraudulent Afghanistan was born and Balkh became a part of it. Tajiks of fake Afghanistan also refer to their geography as Khurasan. But yes, Farsi that is spoken in fake Afghanistan is the same language spoken in Iran, Tajikistan, and occupied Samarqand and Bukhara by Uzbekistan. Pashto on the other hand is a Pakistani language and it is also spoken in southern parts of British created Afghanistan by nomadic Pashtuns. Pashto is synonym with Taliban and their mindset, and I am sure the people of the world know a thing or two about Taliban.

Pakistan 🇵🇰. Interesting boq cireh o. In saraiki and Punjabi language (cireh) means to tear(cut). Boq is bagh. Dadi (grand mother) Dada( grand father) also got many more other words.

As a persian speaker, i found it very amusing at first but it then it slowly become very tiring for my brain. It is like decyphering a jiggsaw puzzle or something like that. It reminds me of a discussion I had with my father and my wife. I said we know that a huge amount of words in modern persian are derived from arabic and for some of them we dont even remember the original persian words. How much would we be lost if we were to go back to pre-islamic Persia...
There are many people as called as a Tat (not-Judo muslim Tats) lives in Azerbaijan.İn capital Tats of Baku which called as Parsi (Tat)people.Muslim Tats is located and live in this regions in Azerbaijan.In Baku,Shamakhi,Shabran ,Aghsu,Ismayilli,Siyazan,Quba,Khachmaz etc.
But Judo Tats mostly just in Guba region in red settlement which called as Crasniy Sloboda.
As a Tat its proud for me be Tat

I think if some one speak Farsi then able to communicate in Middle East , centeral asia counrties even in India and pakistan when I arrieved India on Sept.1972 I was able to communicate in Indian languge because I was trying to broke persian language

Language is disappearing just like the waters of lake Urmia and Dead Sea in Israel.. I am a mountain 🏔 Jew . Was born in Israel , but my family background is from Baku Azerbaijan.. To be honest, I was the only one in my family who was lacking Juhuri _ judeo I was also not really interested, I only knew few words here and there .. I’m 43 years of age now .. Only 3 years ago I began to have a curiosity about my roots .. And from then on it’s like I want to know more about my past heritage.. Purim is coming soon 🔜 and the story of our ancestors happened in Shu Shan ancient Persia beginning of age of monarchy .. it’s not scriptural, but it’s definitely a Megillah a document of our Jewish history of ancient Persia.
