Too bad Matt doesn't speak to callers that challenge him the same way he spoke to the first three callers tonight. If he did this show would be great. The challenge discourse is what makes the show interesting. Not listening to 30 minutes of bullshit tap dancing to eventually get to, "get a second opinion". Jesus Christ. The possible good call tonight, Sutef he hung up on them right away instead of facing the challenge.
Sherlock Holmes was not fictional. The name Sherlock Holmes is fictional, but the cases he solved and the two men who solved them were real people. The real life doctor was written as Sherlock and the real life detective was written as Dr. Watson. So Matt, WRONG AGAIN.
Organized religion was created to control and unite people. To give people something unifying to live. Fight and die for. With that being said, there is something deeper because even animals group together to preform rituals for some reason. For example, monkeys, chimpanzees, etc have been recorded gathering together at the base of waterfalls, beating sticks and rocks together in unison while all "chanting" the same sounds in the same rhythm. Only to suddenly drop everything in unison and go their separate ways and return to their groups. So there is something some scholars are claiming is a spiritual belief within nature. What that something is however is the question. It isn't any organized religion though because we know for a fact they are all based on the stories written by a drug fuelled lady who ran a traveling orgy theater party at the end / beginning of the ice age / bronze age. We have her writings and her name signed to it. Devorah and Mariam created these stories. It's the oldest known peice of writing known to mankind. See, this is why Jstor should be illegal. Everyone should have access to any and all information.

Manuel, never be afraid or ashamed of being intellectually honest. If you don't know something, like, where did the universe come, for instance... "I don't know" is the only intellectually honest answer.
This is something I tell my friend who has a tendency to go "Ummm" "Uhhhh" when he doesnt know the answer to something. I just tell him "Why make things more difficult? Just raise your hand and utter the 3 magic words - I dont know" I never hesitate. It takes a huge load off the shoulders.

I didn't realize that until recently, so now it seems only natural that, in an isolated situation where there aren't fellow question askers, answers would have been both devalued, and few and far between. So yeah, researching/investigating and reading will help. But you also need to find other people to interact with. Find other social circles. Get involved with people who are asking the same questions that you're interested in. By hanging out with them, whether online or real life, you'll wind up learning from them... you'll observe some of the thought patterns that they use to find answers. Matt seemed to miss the part where the guy’s doctor said that “God approved of his course of medications”…. RUN from that doctor as fast as you possibly can!
K. Bosch, I am with you. Irregardless of their medical background, if a doctor stated that god approved my treatment, they would cease to be my doctor from that moment on. I understand the circumstance that they both belong to the same church, but hopefully that doctor separates their belief in the supernatural with their medical training. 58:50 - "if something (creator God) doesn't manifest in some way we can't say anything about it" - I think we can decisively say the existence of a prime mover, creator of everything, God is impossible. Existence implies being, and being implies a place in which to 'be'. If something can't come from nothing then something can't exist in nothing either. So there had to be a minimal spacial construct for this God to exist in before he could exist in it. Therefore that God could not have created it - which makes the claim He created 'everything' impossible.
I love the old saying - If the theist wishes to claim that there was nothing, before there was something, then claims there was a god; he has already shot himself in the foot, for a god is not nothing.
The subject of free will is SUPREMELY dull every time it comes up. Every caller who mentions free will just word vomits for 20 minutes and doesn't concede any points. "Yes I understand, but- (restates the exact statement for the fifth time)"

Hi Kurt, do you know what Methodological Doubt entails? IT was Renee Descartes way of doubting he was sitting in his room when he was plainly doing it. It's not much of a "ride." Thomas was with the Lord when He was doing miracles and yet he needed to stick his hand into the side of Jesus and see it for himself. Maybe we are on the same side here. Duane Miller was a preacher who was healed of paralysis and it was caught on audiotape. 2 miracles. There aren't a lot of things we preachers do: we lead, guide, preach, encourage, extort and perform miracles and are spiritual teachers. I don't see Matt doing anything but looking for the lowest common denominator as his opposition.

Genevieve seems to me to be spot on about the source of religion. Once humans developed speech and could communicate, imagine a child sitting in a cave talking to daddy about grandpa that died and was buried yesterday. “Why daddy?” …”Is he cold daddy?”… “Does he know we’re here?… “Why have so many died this year”…..and on and on… daddy answers as best he can .. he is buried to stop attracting animals eating him and attacking us is the easiest of his answers but as far as the after life it gives comfort to think that grandpa has just moved on. The elder of the cave/encampment/village may be the best story teller and comes up with thoughts that are shared with neighbouring groups and the myths about journeys of the souls of the dead became engrained….. priests would be involved in burials to ensure the departed passed into the next life and they would receive beneficial thank yous from the families… and so tithes and religion becomes embraced forever..

Starting @ 1:00:29 Matt and Genevieve each gave me a new way to think about religion. I too have long thought (a little spitefully) that religion was created to control the masses. Originally (pre-bible), religion probably was a good thing. The damage it does today came much later..... after it was written down and distorted by the rulers and the conmen.
Yes, essentially, but it is wrong of us to project modern concepts onto ancient civilizations. Ancient civilizations probably had no word for religion. They didn't need one. The need arose only after the concept of secular government was invented (see Greeks, democracy, 500 BC ) which created the contrast that demanded new words be invented. Getting a million people coordinated necessitated a control system. Plus Writing was not invented until five millennia after agriculture got civilization started. That means they were operating for five thousand years without the benefit of writing. Everything they did must certainly have been based on fleshy memory only. We know ritual/ceremony/tradition are tremendously helpful to remembering what needs doing. To conclude they were religious based on our discovery of their ubiquitous ritualistic behavior is to draw a seriously erroneous conclusion. Yes. We have problems today that arise from misunderstanding other cultures. How much more difficult to understand cultures separated from us by three to eight millennia. Cheers!
"Now we know, now we probably aren't going to be fooled by a picture of the Cottingley fairies" I see your picture of fairies, and raise you one picture presented by Matt Powell, convinced that confederate soldiers shot down a pterodactyl.
To Stephen, I hope that you read this. With your UC really read up on what foods are safe and what foods can really aggravate it. For instance, people have found that soy lecithin really bothers it. A lecithin will thin out the protective mucous that lines the intestines. Lately, soy lecithin is found in so many prepared goods, like chocolate, cookies, crackers, etc. Food emulsifiers like carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate-80 also are to avoided. Same problem with cold meds that have guaifenesin, which is designed to thin mucous to ease coughing but can hurt those with UC. There are certain veggies that have a lot of sulphur like cabbage, broccolli and cauliflower which will annoy it. From what I have read the sulfur increases gut bacteria that like sulfur but their by products tend to annoy things. Good luck in your research on real medical sites to know what to eat and what to avoid. There are also a number of good books on the topic. Unfortunately, doctors don't have the time to give this info out so UC patients have to learn how to do good research.

I am a medical practitioner. I did work with a doctor who used to pray with her patients which did have me raise my eyebrows. I have been an atheist for sixty years. I am aware that prayer is of no benefit at all. I did not discuss this with her. She used to administer some intravenous treatments to patients for various reasons and I did point out to her that there was good evidence that these treatments were not of any benefit. The risk of harm was minimal but not zero. She responded that she was aware of the research but that “medicine was an art” and that her patients felt better, so that was sufficient for the deception. She was not the only medical practitioner in the city doing this but in my opinion it was inappropriate therapy. I am not happy if placebo medicine is all that is on offer. In the eighteenth century Voltaire stated that “The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient, while nature cures the disease”. Scientific medical studies were not very reliable until the 1970s. People deserve better today.

Free will, as far as the concept is useful, exists. No matter what drives our choices, the fact that options exists, and we attempt can determine the options we want, is as much free will as we need.
I always say, you can choose to do whatever you want, but you will have to deal with the consequences as well. If I choose to click on the next video and watch that, the consequence is negligible. But if I choose to go to my local bank and rob it, those consequence are far more dire. Thus, I will watch the next video.
I really hope I'm wrong but I got a distinct impression that Simo (CA) was looking really hard for an excuse to kill someone and then say "god made me do it."
To Simo: Do you think a dog has free will? If not, do you still see the value in using rewards and punishments for shaping its behavior? Applying rewards and punishments *is* what it means to hold them accountable. That's why we use the same system on reach other. So even if we are entirely deterministic beings, we still need to hold people accountable for undesirable behaviors. A person wants to rob a store. But their internal mental state includes the knowledge of potential punishments. And that's how punishment/reward works - they determine what decisions we make.
Actual "random" is ackshually really hard to get in this universe. For any given event, even a human action, if you knew all data inputs, you would know all the outputs. Problem is, the universe is so complex, no one can collect or process the data. Modeling can give you a general idea of what will likely happen, but cannot predict deterministically. By which I mean, we can determine something from anything. Lightning will strike right here at 10:04 pm PST, Marty. All that said, randomness does occur but only at the quantum level. It, of course, affects everything. At the same time it affects nothing. We are talking about the "wrong" or unexpected change of polarity of a single atom once in a while. When you compound interest and pyramid scheme that over a few billion years, there might be noticeable effects. But since they started so subtlety and proliferated so gradually, the "changes" got interwoven into reality itself.
thats a pretty neat statement. I agree, hardly anything is "random" apart from minute changes which again affect specific outcomes. If something appears "random" to us its simply because we dont know all the factors involved. With the way molecular laws are fixed and predictable in their reactions its only logical to assume that everything else follows a fixed path as well. Of course at the human level you are looking at probably billions of factors so yeah...knowledge is the key
My Dad taught me how to think. When I would make a statement that was correct in my mind, he would counter with a question that made me reevaluate. If your ideas do not hold up to questioning then you might not be right in thinking those ideas.

Wow I missed a good joke there.

My great uncle took over at that point and told me the truth about being convinced about a hearsay book and a hopeful myth. That's the first time I realized I was an atheist. Believe me, Great Uncle Jack left no stone unturned over a schooling of many days, both sides discussed, right down to the crusades etc, full explanations given.

Hi Kurt, do you know what Methodological Doubt entails? IT was Renee Descartes way of doubting he was sitting in his room when he was plainly doing it. It's not much of a "ride." Genevieve seems to me to be spot on about the source of religion.

The need arose only after the concept of secular government was invented
(see Greeks, democracy, 500 BC )
which created the contrast that demanded new words be invented.
Getting a million people coordinated necessitated a control system.
Plus
Writing was not invented until five millennia after agriculture got civilization started.
That means they were operating for five thousand years without the benefit of writing.
Everything they did must certainly have been based on fleshy memory only.
We know ritual/ceremony/tradition are tremendously helpful to remembering what needs doing.
To conclude they were religious based on our discovery of their ubiquitous ritualistic behavior
is to draw a seriously erroneous conclusion.
Yes.
We have problems today that arise from misunderstanding other cultures.
How much more difficult to understand cultures separated from us by three to eight millennia.

Ha, that’s funny; the crew took the hint and cut Matt off!

Hahahahahahahaha...the ending is f###### hilarious. Hope Simo got the point.
I've seen Genevieve on "That GD Show" & as a co-host on other shows, including this one. I just have to say that she is aptly suited for call-in shows.
She's one of the most articulate
young people on this type format.
I like how we finally have a representative of a lifelong atheist.
She knows that these recovered theists went through trauma with possible lifelong effects.
And she’s a bit easier on the eyes than Matt ( and to be honest, Matt is easier on the eyes than I would be - although I’d be better looking on radio)
@@johnfleming5470 It's not like either of them are grotesque.
Also, several ACA hosts have mentioned that they really don't appreciate comments about their appearance, regardless of whether they're positive or negative. It makes them uncomfortable and it's irrelevant to the discussion.
At 1:02:52 or close to that time, her very controlled micro expression to that Allen guy’s stupid phrase, “ don’t get your panties in a twist” (to ridicule people who get overly worked up over some small point) was super controlled, and kind of impressive. She let his comment slide, so as to not interfere with the main flow of the conversation. Matt responded to it as well.
It isn't hard to find that in any abrahamic text. The bible tells us to stone our children if they're disobedient. Or gay. Or break the sabbath.
He’s robbed the bank, the cash is all over the kitchen table and the cops are knocking on the door…
Please have on Genevieve more often. She's beautiful. 😍
Yawh....
Does she have an instagram acct? 🤔

Good job, crew!
Sir Roger Penrose is on the record as saying “I don’t know,“ when asked about the complexities of universe.
Hooray for honest smart Manuel.
My Dad taught me how to think. When I would make a statement that was correct in my mind, he would counter with a question that made me reevaluate. If your ideas do not hold up to questioning then you might not be right in thinking those ideas.
I think religion was created to explain ancient people's surroundings, such as animism.
I think religion was created to force one person's morality on other people
Matt gave great advice to Manuel. Ad hominem attacks are the verbal equivalent of trying to tap out. It means you have them in a hold they don't have an argument to get out of, otherwise they'd be using it.
God won’t show himself because that would violate free will… seems like god didn’t care about that at all when Jesus ran around showing everyone he was god.

"God won’t show himself because that would violate free will"
And there are plenty of examples from the OT.
Valid complaint except jesus knew and nobody else did

Did they volunteer pre life? Was Jesus like, you four come with me.. I don’t get how any sense can be drawn from this “mooched story”. The coming back to life twist ending only removes sympathy I would’ve had. Hell, the real humans crucified next to him had no knowledge of life after their death, no knowledge that a they were god, and didn’t get to “respawn” they stayed dead. And again, this was all prethought up by Jesus or his dad who raped virgins to make himself into his son some how… definitely not the “human” experience if you go around knowing you’re god. And lastly, what would you do if some mother fucker went around telling everyone he was that asshole who flooded the entire planet that one time for that one thing… and to bow to him because He is your king.. you’d be pretty mad at that guy too I assume. Considering how many kittens your ancestors had and were drowned to death because this rib bone of a man Jesus randomly invented ate something with a no no rule attached, that he “randomly” invented.

I wish Matt would let his co hosts speak and share their thoughts. I felt so bad for Genevieve that she agreed to co host and got ready and then barely got a chance to speak in 90 minutes.
Matt is completely oblivious to how he monopolizes literally every single show!! He has no self control when a caller says something that triggers him and literally everything triggers him!!
Aries by host and personality. E.g. Shannon Q jumps in and takes a good percentage of the talk time. Also, Matt backs off and defers to main hosts when he's on other shows. The "host drives" paradigm is typical of these shows.
I grew up Catholic and went to a Catholic elementary school. My whole family believes in god but some are more devout then others. Even as a small child, it never seemed right in my mind that a mystical being existed. It just didn't make sense so I have never believed in a god. So I grew up stating my beliefs with it causing some arguments with my mom. But the more she tried to convince me, the more it sounded ridiculous. I wonder why there are so many people that are so quick to believe whatever they are told. Especially about some being that does not show itself.
I think it's possible that any human could believe under the bad environment.
But, I also hope you are right in your hinting. As I was never a theist either, I suppose it's reasonable that some people will never take to such an absurd belief in any environment.
Those people (possibly you and me) should be the world leaders in my view.
@@ookeekthelibrarian Yes, but my whole family is from a very religious Eastern European family. I was born and raised in the US.
@@kimsland999 I like to think of it that we are on the next level of human evolution. What I always tell theist that swear up and down the their god exists is that the Ancient Greeks would have believed, just as strongly as they believe, in their gods. But now we look back and see how silly they seemed. I also say that how can the god that people believe in now possibly be real if all throughout human history, the gods and belief systems have kept changing. Don't you think that if there was 1 true god, that everyone since the beginning of time would believe in that god and have the same stories of it? That is what I tell theist.
