I wouldn't say he was a "staunch" Catholic. He was confirmed into the Catholic faith in 1904, in public maintained that position and never publicly renounced it. However, in private he condemned transubstantiation and what he called the 'bargaining in souls' that the Catholic church did. So he seems to have rejected many key aspects of Catholic teaching. His personal beliefs seem to have been closest to what was called Positive Christianity, which was an attempt to Aryanise Christianity and to stress the active/dynamic aspects of the Jesus story. Actually... All claimed Gods use reason and evidence. They have evidence you existed and evidence of all your actions throughout life. The claimed God then REASONS if you go to the naughty place or not. Some theists state there's no naughty place, but when I speak of striking their claimed God down, they ALWAYS change their mind (Seems to effect them personally SO odd). Anyway, since we now understand that all claimed Gods use evidence and reason. Then clearly atheists withholding belief due to lack of evidence and reason, would be highly respected and understood by any all knowing claimed God. Next There's the issue of what do we do as higher intelligence to all other species? Let's say cows (but I could even use ants, any species). We farm them, fenced up, and mostly slaughter them for meat. Really old cows are unheard of. BUT, if a cow stands above the rest (shows high intelligence or independence from the flock/cattle/sheep, then the farmer SPARES that individual cow, and uses another one for his last supper (of the day). Now we have TWO good reasons to show you are better off atheist IF a God exists. I have a 3rd one (but I worry about ppl getting bored on long posts, we shall see if you like it). Wouldn't it be reasonable of a God to make atheists his angels with wings? Because they would be doing exactly what they did in life. Helping others see reason. Whereas! Theists believe they should NOT reason at all, but better to praise their God. Therefore God would continue allowing them to praise him (Unless he slaughters them) forever. Just like in their life ;) Now we have THREE advantages of being an atheist IF a God exists. :)
@@kimsland999 also opposite of Pascale's wager, we have a better chance of being favored because we don't believe in the wrong God. If one would care about that, a reasonable one wouldn't

I’ve always wondered what people mean when they say “I feel for your loss” Can you tell me what you mean by this? Are you just saying you take on her situation and imagine what it would feel like to you then use that to understand what you think she might be going through mentally?
Technically, sensation/perception are not cognition either. At least from a functionalist/cognitivist perspective, cognition is information processing, which occurs *after* sensations reach the nervous system. This includes working memory (the maintenance and manipulation of information over short time periods, such as memorizing a sequence of digits and then reversing them mentally). Cognitive science PhD here.
Explain this: Cognition takes place prior to emotion. If one wants (Cognition) happiness (emotion) as one remembers, one will attempt to recreate the conditions that originally created that happiness.
@@spookyactionatadistance1316 Exactly, thoughts and emotions are in an endless feedback loop, each driving the other. Fear is a very basic emotion, and necessary to avoid pain and death; it can be reasonable or unreasonable, depending on what we think about the fear, what we think caused the pain and fear. Counseling that changes how we think will also change how we feel.
Reminds me of the section in Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where he talks about the thought experiment involving an 18 year old who has had zero sensory perceptions...asking if there would be thoughts in their mind, and what if they were suddenly given all their senses, and they viewed the motorcycle....hahahahah Great book...been a few years since i read it....going to go dig it up and enjoy that ride again.

If there was some bizarre car crash that you caused and after it you were permanently attached to the victim for 9 months with indestructible handcuffs, would it be okay to kill the victim to get loose?
@@erkkijunkkarinen9303 possibly; if that person attacks you because you caused the accident, then you have an argument for self defense. If them being attached to you puts your life at risk, then you again have an argument for self defense. But let's look at this from another angle. If you are attached by indestructible handcuffs, someone put those cuffs on the two of you. If it was done by the other person in the cuffs, you have every right to do what is needed to regain your freedom, as they have illegally restrained you, which is a form of attack. It can't be done by the courts, as that's not only outside the bounds of punishment they can give out, but it also punishes the person you hurt, because they could suffer emotional trauma from being forced to be attached to the person who hurt them. But it all still boils down to you have a right to bodily autonomy. If it was done by some third party, then I would think the two of you would want to seek them out and make them release you early, as that's denying both of you the right to bodily autonomy. But, that would still be terminating the attachment early, now wouldn't it?

RE: Slavery in the Bible. Here's what the Bible says about slavery (6 quotes) Ephesians 6:5 “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.” Leviticus 25: 44-46 “You may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you […] You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.” Exodus 21:20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a club and the slave dies as a result, the owner must be punished. If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken for he (the slave) is his property” Exodus 21:2 “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years, but on the seventh shall go out as a free man without payment” Exodus 21:7 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are” 1 Peter 2:18 “Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.”
I think there's more in between lines. Such as we are all slaves to the claimed God. Love is a form of slavery to your partner. So is work whilst at work. I'm not saying this is justified, but slavery in the Bible has a lot of tangents, and that's why it's a big subject. Now resolved of course.
@@kimsland999 the Bible was not written for a university-educated public. It was written for poor uneducated people. The most obvious interpretation is the correct one. For example, when Psalms 137:9 says "Happy/blessed is he who seizes the infant and smashes its head on a rock" it's literally telling you to kill a baby.
@@zenon3021 You know their God's intent? Since I'd agree illiteracy was common back then (I mean 400 years later it was no shock the claimed Prophet, Muhammad was illiterate). But, I suspect the Bible was NOT made for people who could not read it. I suspect it was a guide to those educated slave masters. I can show this because other nations were meant to be slaves (According to the Bible) and NOT meant to be given Bible's to learn from (initially). Nor were women educated either! Therefore it was not written for the uneducated.
@@kimsland999 their god has no intent - he's a mythical character from a fantasy-fiction book with talking animals, talking trees, zombies, dragons, etc. It was probably also used as a guide for American slave owners who could morally justify owning black people as slaves by pointing to those 6 Bible passages and saying god's cool with it. I also wonder how many gay people were beaten/murdered largely due to homophobic Bible verses...
You claim an interpretation of a teaching that you do not adhere to condones slavery. I've always thought that the relevant question for the slavery discussion is " Could the bible have been written in a way that made it clear that the transatlantic slave trade was immoral?"
Sure, why not? The bible could clearly list one of the 10 commandments to say: "Thou shall not own another person as property". Or maybe Jesus could have said the same thing at any point in the NT.
I'm curious about the Violinist moral problem. If A agrees with V that A will provide life support for 1 month no consideration (money etc) is given, can A after 2 weeks decide for whatever reason decide to withdraw life support ? While a threat to As life is obviously a valid reason but would moderate pain be a good reason. By left support I mean a direct connection between A and V as in the Violinist analogy.
I just ignore setuf when they call to discuss abortion then instead of discussing abortion they present convoluted virtually impossible hypothetical situations.
AT 57:34) I have exactly the same assessment of subjects like rape. Some people say - well is it immoral. I say yes. Then someone can say well it is really about spreading the gene, irrespective of the delivery of the gene. I'm like Matt in saying that I look at the WELLBEING of the individual. SO yes, the delivery of the gene through rape can be carried out, but DUE to the trauma of the delivery of the gene - AKA rape - the person who was raped suffers many sideeffects of the trauma. She can (and should) look into abortion, leaving the entire action pointless, and now suffers the trauma for life. Yes, I'm breaking it down to the bare minimum basics, but it's simply to show my point that rape, for no matter what reason, is wrong in every possible way. It is immoral, unethical, unproductive, in fact -destructive. What is scary is how many people need this level of explanation before something finally clicks in their heads.
Teaching someone that slavery or rape is wrong is very much trying to teach someone to care about another person. I thought theist care about people but they in some strange way do not care unless there's a rule that says you do, hence we have to teach them they can care about people without first checking there's a rule that allows you to do so. Theists learn what it's like to be human in such strange ways.

They don't hear the question. They hear an attack. From a young age they are instructed to NOT question thy God! (Lol). To give you an example, it would be like questioning you: Why don't you love Jesus? The question can't be honestly answered by you. If you say you don't hate Jesus, or you don't believe in Jesus, both don't answer the specific question. The question was: Why don't you love Jesus? It wasn't do you believe in him or not. Science (Psychology) has an answer to their issue. Literally the neurons in their brain about questioning their God belief, don't exist. Thus it takes time to grow these connections that have not been used since they were 6. The recovery is a process. It takes time. Hitler wasn't an atheist. He was a staunch catholic and talked about his extreme christian dominionism in Mein Kampf.
I always love it when theists bring up Hitler and Stalin. The whole “well, maybe it was the moustaches that was the problem?” is a great comedy retort every time.

There's the issue of what do we do as higher intelligence to all other species?
Just like in their life ;)
Now we have THREE advantages of being an atheist IF a God exists. :)

Explain this:
Cognition takes place prior to emotion.
Reminds me of the section in Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where he talks about the thought experiment involving an 18 year old who has had zero sensory perceptions...asking if there would be thoughts in their mind, and what if they were suddenly given all their senses, and they viewed the motorcycle....hahahahah

@@erkkijunkkarinen9303 possibly; if that person attacks you because you caused the accident, then you have an argument for self defense. Leviticus 25: 44-46 “You may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you […] You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.”
Exodus 21:20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a club and the slave dies as a result, the owner must be punished. If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken for he (the slave) is his property”
Exodus 21:2 “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years, but on the seventh shall go out as a free man without payment”
Exodus 21:7 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are”

I have exactly the same assessment of subjects like rape.
@@Ignirium In a sad way, when you think about it, religious adults are like grow up children. They still think there are monsters, demons, or whatever they are presented with. I used to be angry with these people back in the day, but now I just see them as victims of a hand-me-down beliefs that unfortunately take a psychological hold onto their minds like a mental AIDS.
I suppose the key is to be patient with them, and if they're to engage in talks about religion, those talks are to be handled carefully and productively. We were all there once/
Seriously, clip that haha. I want to post that clip on all of my social media haha. Great rant
LMAO the country guy had me in tears 😂😂
Love this dou! Like them all of course.....
you guys keep putting callers that are from Arkansas as from "AK", AK is Alaska, AR is Arkansas. :)
What's the difference when they are stupid
@Skydaddy Myth-Busters wait… I like Alaska though!
@Skydaddy Myth-BustersIt's warm in Arkansas, and all the large predators have long since been hunted out. In an environment like Alaska, self congratulatory delusions about god's protection and the likelihood of miracles is almost immediately fatal. You get people who indulge in mystical thinking sometimes, but they've generally got a bit of sense.
People who say "emotions are rational" have never had to deal with panic attacks.
I would say some emotions are rational. I too suffer panic attacks.
I'd say that emotions came before self awareness, and was rational when we were hunters and collectors more than 10,000 years ago.
You didn't listen to Shannon's explanation?
@@freddan6fly Why do you think hunter-gatherers were not self aware and were driven purely by emotion?
@@TheHookahSmokingCaterpillar Have you seen an angry ape? They seems to be driven by emotions rather than self awareness at least when overwhelmed by emotions. I only wrote more than 10,000 years ago. I could as well written more than 2M years ago.
If you have a reasonable belief that there is a fire then shouting fire in a theatre is justifiable.
In the case of religion, it's a special smokeless fire we can't see. "Reasonable belief" is a loaded term
My condolences, Shannon.
I am sorry to hear that your father passed away. I always loved your voice, intellect, and humour. You are part of your parents. I do share your sorrow and pain, me being a humanist now. Take care and look after yourself. We are just here for you, right here right now!
@@magicalchemicaldaddy3919 *as many former atheists NDE say*
What does NDE stand for again?
@@TrettinR NDE is a Near Death Experience - I had one in which a met a god who told me she prefers skeptics over groveling sycophantic trolls. MCD is going to be in a heap of trouble if it was real.
I also had NDE and saw a guy called Jesus cannibalizing children and since then I decided to be first and foremost a humanist looking after all the needy around me on this life and earth and then an atheist.
Matt and Shannon are the Gordon Ramsay‘s of spirituality :) I really love that and no joke
Matt D, he crushed the Theists, now he's trampling the Trolls! 😅
If there is no such thing as free will, we have no choice but to hold people responsible for their actions. Duh!!!!!
Why is it that when a yes or no question is asked to a theist they don't answer the question?
They don't hear the question. They hear an attack.
From a young age they are instructed to NOT question thy God! (Lol).
To give you an example, it would be like questioning you: Why don't you love Jesus?
The question can't be honestly answered by you. If you say you don't hate Jesus, or you don't believe in Jesus, both don't answer the specific question.
The question was: Why don't you love Jesus? It wasn't do you believe in him or not.
Can you see how when Christains are asked why do you believe? They are taken back! Such a question has never entered their mind, ever.
Thus they begin speaking of something else kinda related.
Science (Psychology) has an answer to their issue. Literally the neurons in their brain about questioning their God belief, don't exist. Thus it takes time to grow these connections that have not been used since they were 6.
The recovery is a process. It takes time. Once they hear these questions again and again, they'll be able to work out that: They don't have any reason to believe in a God at all.
And questions like: Why don't you love Jesus? Will sound silly to them (as it should).
@@kimsland999 The way I'd ask is do you know or do you have faith. One is different from the other and you cannot have both when it comes to truth and facts. Definitions get muddied up and depending on what you mean it all becomes convoluted.
I HAD NO IDEA THAT YOUR DAD DIED!!! hope you are keeping your spirits high and u are super strong for sharing Shannon. glad to have you back
Props to Shannon, her answer for the violinist analogy was perfect.
…and for not giving Fetus any more time.
But I wanted to hear Setuf try to backtrack out of a corner and get back on script - always fun so see them do that.
But doesn't Shannon point implies that a pregnancy could be terminated at any point as long as the baby's survival is contingent on the mother?
Water isn't wet in itself, but it can saturate some other substances that aren't wet.
Matt, that beard looks great. You should keep it. What does Arden say ?
