Ngl I hope Critikal plays more Splatoon 3. I felt my woomy heart melt when he skipped the whole Salmon Run tutorial and said “I don’t need to learn it, it’s a kids game” 😭 And my soul just completely left my body when he skipped Story Mode cuz he thought it was just turf war with bots
@@EchidnaKida a little extreme to assume he isn't smart just because he glossed over splatoon gamemodes lol. it really isn't that big of a deal he just needs to stop assuming dumb shit lol
To me it was interesting to see how quickly Cr1tikal picked up the mechanics and it goes to show that while sticks are quite disadvantaged they don’t make you an inherently bad player. I’ve always used sticks since Splatoon 1 but that’s because of a disability that prevents me from using motion. I’ve had great success however but I guess 7 years of splatoon experience will do that.
I'm pretty sure he keeps on mentioning that, unless you have a disability that makes you motion sick, not using motion controls is inherently disadvantageous. This doesn't mean that sticks will be bad, but it's highly discouraged.
critikal was playing against like, the worst players of all-time lmao actually watch who he is fighting and not just him while you can get better with sticks, critikal is really bad, he just got frankly a bit lucky
If you're as fast with stick as someone is with motion, you're not at a disadvantage. It's just most motion players will have better reaction time on average
@@w2heck I love how you say they’re not at a disadvantage and then immediately describe how playing with sticks *is* disadvantaged compared to motion lmao. Like, YEAH. The better ability to react IS what makes motion players have the advantage over sticks players. If you literally have to play better than motion players to be on the same level as them, correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like that means the motion player has an advantage over you. Obviously if someone prefers just playing with sticks that’s perfectly fine (and in OP’s case they literally can’t use motion) but it has been VERY well established at this point that motion is just better.
The last time I played a console shooter that wasn't splatoon I spent the whole time wishing it had motion aiming and trying to move the controller to aim by habit, despite having put considerably more hours into games like Halo when I was younger. It's just so much more intuitive when you get used to it
I wish there were more options of motions in Splatoon. For example, in the new Doom games on the switch, you have motions controls but it doesn't take out the Y axis aiming of the right stick, so it feels like halo but you can aim perfectly at the last moment like if you had a mouse with the motion controls you have on the game. Motions are so cool there.
I tried using the same motion control scheme as splatoon in Apex Legends via steam controller settings, quickly found out that recoil makes the whole thing suck ass
I used sticks for console but I play most shooters on PC. Just started using motion control on Splatoon 2 days ago and I wish I had started sooner. Nice you get the settings right for you and get used to it, it’s so much better. (I got used to it only after about an hour of messing around with it. Probably because of mostly being a PC gamer.)
I wish more games implemented motion control aiming. The great thing about it is that it minimizes the gap between console and pc for games. The mouse allows people to very accurately aim shots and move their camera more intuitively. Motion controls allow that advantage to also exist in controllers. The only game I’ve seen besides Splatoon that offers motion controls is The Last of Us part 2. It made aiming so much easier and better and I really hope more game companies decide to start adding them as an option.
I play doom 2016 and doom ethernal on the switch. And also borderlands. All of those games have motions controls. And it is the coolest thing ever in my opinion. Every game should have that. I enjoy motions controls on those games so much, i also wish it was the standard in more games (And I am a stick user in Splatoon lol XD, but that is by choice XD. I miss the Y axis but i understand it for the sake of newbe non fps players).
I think S1 & S2 were fairly balanced for Stick players, but in 3, I think Squid Roll might end up creating a large skill gap between the players. Being able to Squid Roll isnt the problem but being able to use it in the middle of combat is going to be a problem on Stick.
Probably. But I will say a little bit of chaos might force people to get creative. I was almost going to say to "get gud", but i realized it was just too toxic. Me as a stick control user, i main the splosh o matic and I don't have any problem being a stick control user at all, and I have gotten to higher ranks. I adjust my lack of aiming by moving more my character and repositioning, like almost doing sub strafe every time I am near someone. But maybe I am a false stick control user, as my aim is bad, but i use a weapon that isn't affected by that that much. I have seen other stick control players using chargers and being good at it... I will never get to that level. I wonder if they will adapt to the squid roll maneuvers.
@@fernavliz1 Being a Stick main isn't a problem, I think ppl should be allowed to play however they want. I just worry that the new movement options have only been balanced around Motion and not Stick. There are plenty ppl that can't play Motion and I dont wanna see anyone getting unintentionally left behind as more ppl learn how to properly use the new mechanics in battle. Maybe someone will come up with some weird way of holding your controller to roll and aim but that just seems like an unfair compromise. It's still too early to say if Squid Roll might change *TOO* much but from what I've seen and played: A person who knows how to Roll are easily the hardest ppl I've ever gone against in Splatoon...
Honestly sticks vs motion isn’t a issue unless you’re trying to play competitively. Now that I think about it this would be a gnarly splatfest theme. Sticks vs Motion vs Mixed (Both)
@@Teriiiyakiii Oh, I would want to have it mixed :). Really cool idea. Competitive is another level that I think most people just never touches.... mmm, I heard there was a pro player using stick controls... How would that look like?
To your point at 1:51, I have a younger cousin that has special needs, and he loves turning on the Wii U and playing Splatoon 1 whenever he comes over to my house. At first, I left stick controls on for him, since I figured that would be "easier", but I recently changed it to motion, and his aim immediately improved by a ton.
I was sorta the opposite. When I first played Splatoon (which would also be my first shooter), my friend used stick controls and I could not get the hang of it. Probably my inexperience with the genre, but trying to aim, shoot and move the R-stick was extremely uncomfortable. At first, I used motion controls to remove the Y-axis so I just had to move it horizontally and that definitely helped things a lot, especially when it came to just spraying ink around.
Same here, my parents always avoided me getting shooting games so S1 on Wii U was my first, I left motion on and never looked back (I’m used to default sens as a result though lol)
splatoon is the only shooter ive ever been interested in, so now when i play other games that lack motion control it actually feels so weird and unintuitive lmao
i’ve grown up playing games like CoD and Battlefield, but i feel like with nintendo shooters something about stick controls just feels incredibly clunky and unusable compared to something like a Playstation or Xbox game
I REALLY recommend watching solar lights video about using controllers in tf2. Ik it’s not about splatoon but he goes in depth about how it’s a great alternative to mouse aiming bc it basically emulates mouse aiming. And talks about ways to easily 180 with the tools given
Nerrel also made two really good videos about motion controls and how people reject this concept because of they think all motion controls are like wii waggle.
With respect to spawning, I've learned to pick where I want to jump in, then immediately move my hands back into my default "rest' position and press Y even if it makes the camera go crazy while the jump animation plays. Doing that makes it so your camera is correct once your inkling lands.
I find it funny when sweats and/or regular shooter game players play Splatoon and have trouble with the aiming. As a Splat1 veteran, I think motion controls are a critical part of the game.
3:28 I use this constantly and I can confirm that it is really REALLY useful. You can catch someone of guard that’s chasing you, throw Charger aim of or to quickly disengage when you run somewhere that turns out to be a not so welcoming situation Also if you do a quick turn to the right, you can almost squidroll forwards (doesn’t work so well on left turns since the brush is held on the right side of the character and thus doesn’t paint enough under you for left turns)
3:25 brush main here, idk about others but squid roll doesn't feel that useful to me in that situation since most of the times when you need to retreat like that is because a weapon has more range than your brush, so going straight backwards isn't as much of an advantage as turning to the side would be
It seems to me as if with quick enough execution, a side squid roll might be feasible in that situation, but I haven't been on the game in a bit and haven't made much use of squid roll yet, so I don't know for sure
dont forget that it gives you invincibility frames, essential to avoid damage when youre getting outranged by something that needs multiple shots to kill.
You can squid roll to the side too, though. It's not strictly directly backwards. Brushes even let you squid roll out of a brush roll with a tight input
Squid roll can be used as a mix up tool, a way to go across grates faster, or to damage boost through things like bombs. Yes it isnt useful or necessary in many situations, but that just makes it not overpowered or annoying to fight against.
Once I was messing around and stumbled upon that brush technique. I hope later in splatoon 3’s lifespan there are brush players who can pull it off consistently it feels like it has so much potential
I have an injury that makes motion controls painful for me after a few matches, but I still try to learn both control schemes. I think it's really cool that Cr1tikal's aim was that awesome just jumping in to splatoon :D Honestly, I don't like other shooter games. I find them boring. But I've always loved Splatoon, since launch :D I was in college when the first game came out, and tbh I think it was the bright colors and character design that drew me in. It's interesting to see how new players feel about the aesthetics and story and all as they go.
Trying motion first time online it's hard I'm trying it but it's funny when moist goes against an x rank level player He regretted playing a "kids game"
Splatoon is the only multiplayer shooter I play, and I'm very used to motion because of it. Every time I've tried playing a shooter without motion I just can't do it. Shoutout to games that add motion as an option when possible
I can see where Charlie is coming from, he’s used to sticks and since he won’t be playing Splatoon for long, learning gyro isn’t a concern. But man, Dunkey is just… yeah, I don’t care for Dunkey. At all.
My only complaint with the motion controls is that the stick can’t be used to adjust vertical aim like it can with horizontal, it just feels wrong to be able to move the stick one way and not the other to supplement motion aiming.
thats because the right stick is better used like a camera stick when aiming with motion. if the stick could tilt the camera up then when you go to look right or left theres a good chance the camera moves up or down as well, which means you have to aim lower with motion.
Right. It annoys me when people pick up Splatoon and go off about how sorry they feel for the kids. Dude, last I checked, all shooters are crawling with kids. I played the crap out of Halo and COD as a kid.
9:33 this was me when I first got the game. I had no context for the game, not having had a WiiU (although I did want one lol) and as soon as I clocked there was some sort of amnesia plot I kinda spent a whole week just playing singleplayer to finish it, completely ignoring that there was multiplayer as an option.
Honestly never knew that so many people hated motion controls lol, when I first started in Splat 1 I absolutely loved them (Tho recently picking up 3 made me experience a bit of weird feeling with the motion at first)
i think what you kind of learn to do as a console fps player is use your character's movement and camera in tandem to line up shots, at least thats what ive always done. motion controls are still probably way better since it frees up movement as a tool to not get hit (and is generally more accurate and reactive) but it mostly still works fine. personally ill probably try to learn motion controls eventually but since i main roller it doesnt feel like a super urgent need
I mean rollers are a beginner weapon. Precise accuracy isn't really a thing to worry about, although the vertical swing still takes some practice. You can just hold down zr and run to paint or into people. It's nice to newer/younger players. Carbon roller is probably my favorite of the rollers for how fast it is to sling paint and move with it.
@@ShadowSkyX its definitely beginner friendly, but as you start relying less on rolling over opponents i feel like its ramps up in skill/strategy dependency pretty significantly, carbon roller while apparently not super meta relevant is pretty good at breaking you out of that habit, i really enjoy that weapon, i just wish it had a better kit
I tried to do that (edit: moving while aiming to course-correct) when I was starting to play, but found myself accidentally stepping on enemy ink way too often. In the end I enabled motion controls with the sensitivity WAY down, to get used to it, and I've been increasing the sensitivity as I've gotten used to it
Honestly, I WAS hard stuck on stick control on splatoon 2, (honestly with a sploosh-o-matic the inaccuracy made up for the stick sensitivity cap), I turned off motion controls in splatoon 2 as soon as I got out of the tutorial, but for some reason when the Splatfest testfire for splatoon 3 started, I just figured, why not try Motion... I sucked, but as said: for some reason I got used to it during all the games up to Ruler during the splatfest, and funny enough I play the game exclusively in motion controls, the only way i'd play stick again is in handheld, and I'd probably just switch back to a more wide shot weapon for that.
I can already see the Dunkey stans marching in to defend his absurdly one-sided "Satire" reviews. In all seriousness, while there should be more stick support by now, Aim Assist is a bit too far, and I've always felt it was just a lazy way to slap a quick fix onto an already broken method of aiming that started back with far worse controllers on far less complex games. However, motion controls are by far superior on consoles that try hard enough with them, such as the Wii and the Switch, both of which pretty much nailed the experience. Also splatoon's sensitivity settings suck for both controls, that point I will give literally anyone who points it out. To explain it the way I see it; Sticks are like using keyboard arrow keys to aim on a computer FPS game, compared to using the mouse. Sure, aim assist might help people using the keyboard, but why not just use the mouse with its far more reactive and in-depth range of motion?
Aim Assist at its core keeps the game casual and helps keep you casual because you're not trying to optimize everything in the game. If you try hard to optimize everything... you become a tryhard optimizing your abilities, picking meta weapons, ect. It is a case of choosing between... I want to use the meta and be proud of my rank... even though I get a high rank because 75% of players don't use meta. I want to enjoy the game even if it isn't optimal. Making suboptimal choices is healthier for an individual and the community both short term and long term.
@@Watburnt Problem is his "shitpost" videos are virtually indistinguishable from his "serious" reviews. He's a clown that hides behind 8 different layers of irony specifically so that he can't be called out for being wrong, or just being an asshole.
Funnily enough, I actually found motion controls very intuitive from the get-go. Though maybe that's because I haven't played *any* console shooters in my life, lol
Eh, I wouldn't say it's just because you never played a console shooter. I play both Fortnite and Splatoon 3, and it differs for me. Fortnite, I use stick controls. Splatoon 3, I use motion controls. I'd say it depends on which type feels more suited for you.
really funny to me that they blame the issues they have on the game and not themselves refusing to learn the way they need to learn in order to play the game lol
He’s like that about a lot of things, refusing to acknowledge when he has a bad take and hiding behind “satire”. Its why i stopped watching him years ago.
I was just thinking about how once I had the motion controls down, it pretty much stuck with me, even when I had taken a bit of a break for awhile later in 2’s life. Going to Starfox Zero, I enjoyed it overall and got fairly decent at it, but when I went back to it somewhat recently after not really playing for awhile, the controls stuck out as unintuitive. Having to look down at the game pad screen constantly is not ideal and it was even a large learning curve to re-learn it once more.
my sister and I would play private matches and it'd basically be a minigame for whoever got the gamepad with motion controls vs a challenge mode for whoever got the motion control lacking pro controller. was pretty fun, I remember getting pretty ok at stick, but it wasn't ever as fun as motion.
What I think would help a lot with people who want to focus on stick aim, is if there was an option to control the game with full stick aim, AND motion controls, instead of making you pick the weird “horizontal aim only” that motion controls gives you. Something like what the switch borderlands 2 port does for example. (But with splatoon’s sensitivity settings, because for some reason everything about BL2’s motion controls really does feel off.) Edit: I just want to clarify, I don’t think that this should necessarily replace the existing controls altogether, but like… have it as a third option. I play with motion controls, and it has always been better for me to mainly rely on that. I’m suggesting this more as a way for players who are struggling to transition from stick to motion. It could help them get more adjusted by learning to fine tune their aim at first for example.
There is a _reason_ that the Splatoon series disables the Y-axis on sticks: it lets you use the right stick to aim horizontally without messing with the vertical axis if you aren't precise (read: moving the stick right but slightly down because you moved it fast doesn't move the camera down and then force you to readjust). Obviously having more options is better than not, but using that option would mess with the feel too severely to be implemented officially (in my opinion).
ngl i basically use both stick & motion and i never really had a problem with that. i am a frontline only player though so it’s likely more of a problem for weapons like chargers
I am completely the opposite, as Splatoon 2 was the first shooter game I was into and spent my time on. I never changed to stick because 1, I didn’t know how, 2 I didn’t really care. Whenever I would go to my friends house to play other shooter games, I would always complain because they didn’t have motion. I also can’t stand using stick…
12:00 Something I realized only after reading the comments of Dunk’s Splat3 video is that it was only 50% about Splatoon and the other 50% was actually thinly veiled jabs at the rest of the industry and other current events in gaming, so some of the criticisms were just using Splatoon as a vehicle to poke fun at unrelated games/topics
7:05 Gem: *proceeds to talk about dualies working for less experienced players* Me, who mains dualies and has gotten to S+1 with them in Splatoon 2: well dang
ive never been able to use motion controls, not because i cant but because i cant aim properly with it, ive been practicing for a long time with it with no improvement at all, so i stick with stick controls because of it
I tried motion controls after I heard how much better it is and that first week I really hated the game. But as I kept going and practicing I did notice in some situations where I just needed an inch and I moved my controller I got it. But I don't know how much I'm actually supposed to use the right stick in conjunction with the motion controls
The best advice I can give is to use motion controls for quickly flicking to an opponent's position, or for sweeping motions of spraying ink around, while the stick is more for turning around in a less intense situation, or making big movements to correct your positioning or aim. It takes time, but its worth it!
In Splatoon, motions controls are you main aim. The right stick is only for orientation but not for fast aiming.... Lol i feel so bad saying that from a stick control perspective, but I play motions controls in the new doom games on the switch, and there you have sticks and motions at the same time. So aiming can be really different depending on how you adjust the sensitivity. Anyways, sorry for the tangent. I recommend to have, depending on the weapon, a higher sensitivity either to the stick or to the motions if you use a mid range or long range weapon, you will need precision but also a quick way to turn around when being ambushed. For a slayer close range weapon i recommend high sensitivity on both, and use motions when the rival is at your range and in your field of view... You rotate when the rival isn't in your field of view. ( For both cases in reality is a combination of both, but i said it in a simpler way so you could understand how aiming in Splatoon is designed for, or at least it is what I feel like it's designed for).
Take my opinion with a very large grain of salt, because I'm not very good...but I max out stick sensitivity to quickly ballpark my aim at my target, and then a lower motion sensitivity to aim accurately. Also, everyone knows Dunkey is a trolltuber and shouldn't be taken seriously.
I don't think it would take 2 weeks to get used to. The thing that people don't get is pressing Y to reset the camera, I'm pressing it all the time while playing and it helps to make motion controls more comfortable for me.
For 2:30, I would in fact argue they should like play with Motion Controls for a week. Since, that's what's being a content creator is about right? Experiencing new and novel experiences. I do think Spaltoon is really the only "popular" shooter game where Motion Controls is the default.
I am genuinely curious how it feels for people who struggle to learn motion controls. When I first got splatoon, I didn’t know sticks were an option so I got used to the whole motion schtick really quickly.
I went into Splatoon 2 on launch knowing it would be a learning curve. Not only am I super comfortable with it now, but I exclusively play the switch version is Skyrim (as opposed to other platforms, not other games) so I can play archers with gyro aiming.
I will say as someone who recently learned motion controls for this, dual stick was far more intuitive the first time I learned it. Motion controls do just let you turn faster than is possible with the stick, but they are definitely not intuitive.
Back in Splatoon 2 all I did was use stick and was barely able to have a A+ in ranked mode, I think all are cracked from the last time I played. Now from 2019-22 I didn't play the game and got rusty. In Splatoon 3 I tried motion controls and it can be real slippery at first, but after getting steady and quick with it, it all feels fluent and better for encounters and coverage. Motion controls to me feels like I'm learning to play with a mouse and keyboard for the time back in 2014 after migrating from consoles. I'm still ass with motion controls since I've been busy with college, though I'm thinking on setting it up to my desk. Holy shit I was 14 playing Splatoon 2, now I'm 18. What the fuck happened.
I actually grew up with shooters like Halo, but for some reason with Splatoon sticks don't work for me. Maybe it was a sensitivity issue, but it doesn't matter cuz I got used to the motion controls instantly
Halo was the first adapter of Aim Assisting features such as magnetism. Splatoon lacks these features, so the aiming with the sticks don't feel as good
For a game where aiming is so important, I wish they had more control options so that people could play what they like. I'm in the "both motion control and sticks suck in this game" camp, but if they gave us a few simple control customization options, that would change for me.
I play sticks because I cannot get a handle on the motion controls because my brain hates that I can ONLY look up and down with motion. If I could use stick controls with motion enabled to adjust aiming I'd be a god
I tried to learn motion control 3 separate times between 2 and 3 and the slightest movement makes the camera shake gives me motion sickness every time. So I'm back to stick control. Now 100 points away from S+ rank-up battle.
first time ever playing splatoon, i have learned me playing gyro(four games) OR sticks(once) regardless it was really hard and i got demolished in my first turf war games lol. so that being said, i'm going to just finish the solo campaign with gyro and see how it goes haha.
While I understand and fully accept that the motion controls ARE better.... The idea of grinding for weeks just to tolerate them seems very un-fun. Having the motion go in one direction faster than the other, getting hung up randomly, the lack of vertical camera movement on the stick. its all so frustrating and makes me constantly wonder "Was I the one who screwed up? or did the Motion Controls mess up?" I lose the ability to learn and improve, because I don't know WHAT the issue was in the first place. Sticks let me focus on the game and not the controls.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Not everyone is looking to become a serious competitive player. For casual players you can do decently fine with sticks.
@@PurpleRupees I'm VERY casual, and when I go tryhard, I play more of a supportive player anyways. I care more about causing problems, inking, or being the the right position for my special. Never been too focused on kills, where motion controls shine.
@@ZtotheMills Curious what your gaming background is? Personally I never had any dual-stick experience at all, so I got the hang of motion in less than two days. Sorry if it seems like a super random question, I just wanted to see how much previous gaming experience affects motion learning.
@@KallMeQul 90% of games with either shooting mechanics, or a first person camera that I've played have been on mouse and keyboard. The rest with a controller. What I get hung up on with the Motion controls is that they simply aren't working. for whatever reason the sensitivity seems off-kilter and the complete removal of half the camera's input when in that mode drives me batty.
Dual stick aiming is hard. I had to learn it as adult. It took literal months to be capable. Years to be good. But motion controls? I figured them out in a couple of hours. They never felt bad. Not a single day.
Motion is the exact reason that I got into Splatoon. As a long time kbm fps player sticks control just feels inferior. Just look at the level of aim assist they add into console shooters. But motion is a real game changer, it's just feels right and performs so well.
I didn’t even suffer at all when I first turned on motion in botw. Saw instant improvement. Then again I was awful with 3d twin stick controls and had only put like maybe 50 hours into games that use them but still
It is baffling to me how some are still so against the idea of Motion Controls. In my mind, Stick Controls will never truly be able to compete with Mouse & Keyboard, and Motion Controls are exactly the thing that is capable of bridging that gap. I understand it's a bit weird to get used to though, and I guess that's pretty much what it comes down to? People give Motion Controls a shot, but are unwilling to put in the time to properly get used to it, so they instead come to the conclusion that it's simply bad.
Went from splatoon 1 sticks, to motion controls in splatoon 2 only cause i got destroyed by a charger. Played motion and charger until i felt like i was good(s+)
I did everything in the stories despite primarily focusing on ranked mode. I just liked the game so much that I wanted to get everything I possibly could so once that was done, it was just ranked left since like you said, being challenged by humans that keep getting better gives so much replay value and I adore it. I love to keep learning and being challenged. (Someone in a discord server I'm in says there's no replay value in splatoon and considers it repetitive. He also says that despite barely playing for more than 30 minutes at a time on just turf, that he can beat an x rank/me. I wanna punch him.) Side rant aside, I cannot use motion controls so I will only use sticks. I've grown up using sticks, and motion controls not only give me motion sickness, but I have cats that lay on me and jump on me so it's actually impossible for me to use that method for various reasons. I know people that use sticks get hate for sucking, but yeah no, as long as you teach yourself to be good with them and learn to adapt, you can do just fine since I do. I don't get the hate for what's simply a personal preference. I feel like this whole message is worded horrendously. My bad. Edit since I forgot: I only bring up the rank because yes it's possible to be good while using sticks. But also it goes in hand with people looking at Splatoon like a game for just kids and assuming one can master it with little effort/the dude playing turf minimally and believing he can take on high ranks with ease. As another side note, being a brush main with hundreds of hours in 3 already (I have no life lmao,) I did not know you could squid roll with the momentum of running with the brush and I'm so excited to try it out now.
Im currently trying overwatch 2 on the switch, and while I’m thankful that it has motion controls, it’s just not the same yet. I need to mess with the controls more
even though I was S+ in splatoon 2 it still took me a good 50-60 hours to feel completely comfortable with motion controls again, so I understand them not liking it. i started out frustrated but eventually it becomes smooth and easy
i am not a gamer by any means. i got splatoon 3 because my friends were all playing it, and i thought i could at least play it for the story mode and turf war if nothing else. this is my first ever time playing a shooter game! i have had so much fun, and the motion controls are amazing. i am certainly not a “3 year old child” but i can definitely vouch that they’re highly intuitive! i even tried stick controls for a short amount of time while i was of the belief they may be better, but i found that i was struggling and unable to react as quickly to certain threats. overall, definitely recommend motion controls!
I feel like im just ultra lucky and intuitively attuned toward the motion controls. I had tried splatoon 1 and felt the gamepad was ultra clunky, but in splatoon 2, I took to the motion controls almost immediately. In fact I was cranking them up to max sensitivity right away. Splatoon is the first game that made me believe in motion controls as a technology. I tried doom and found them to be too rigid with not enough flexibility in the sensitivity settings. (10 on doom felt like a +1 on splatoon to me). I think that the criticism against motion controls works a lot better for other shooters, but it works perfectly in splatoon. It is exactly what you want from motion controls. I have experience with double stick aiming, and I feel like that just feels awful in splatoon. I have considered trying to move to hybrid aiming and messing with my stick sensitivity just for situations where I would be breaking my wrist on crossups, but even still the payoff feels very small.
I think dunkey said the specials were "unbalanced" cause the specials when the game launched were worse balance-wise than in splatoon 1 endgame. He came out with that review days after the game launched so it's understandable
If the motion controls had an option where it only controlled left and right instead of primarily up and down, I would be able to tolerate it. Even Manhunt 2 on the Wii had that option. But as it is now, I'd rather stick with stick controls and be "worse" at the game than suffer through learning a new play style that most likely won't even help in the long run. 🤷♂️
I watched moist’s video when it came out and made a comment something to the affect of “wow! This guys is crazy with the sticks for having never played before.” And then explained why motion controls would out scale skill wise. The twin stick skills he gained from other games definitely transferred well. As for dunkey, it is hard to take a such a harsh review from someone who’s hardly even played the game seriously. If he hasn’t even played enough to unlock all the weapons he doesn’t have a lot of credibility in my mind (remember ethos pathos logos from your English classes lol). I prefer people like Aliensrock, a variety streamer/youtuber who plays through an entire game before reviewing it. Now he plays primarily puzzle games so he would never play splatoon, but my point is I would care more for a review of someone who’s actually played the game a decent amount. Not necessarily thousands of hours but at least like 60+.
I’ve played both console shooters and splatoon, and I will say that swapping between motion controls and stick controls isn’t that big of a deal, and I think that’s because the joycons and a ps4 controller are very different so I play differently with each of them
There is one reason and 1 reason only i do not use motion controls. I only have handheld joy-cons, Joy-cons with drift, and wired pro controllers. All of which don’t allow for full control of the game (Drift for stick other 2 for motion)
7:33 This is my biggest problem with the stigma that comes with media that tries to appeal to all ages, but looks like it's for kids. I've been playing Splatoon since 2019, and I'm pushing 40! This is the most fun I've ever had in a shooter, bar none! I love first person shooters, but call of duty has never appealed to someone like me. I would much rather play Halo, overwatch, or Splatoon. Even Red Faction 2 had brighter colors at times. Lol
Duel stick aiming is something i NEED don't get me wrong im better with motion controls but skyward sword has left me broken after the whole harp thing
I have only ever play shooters on PC and splatoon always felt like an extension to that, so i can see why someone who plays a lot of console shooters just picking sticks for a bit isn’t too bad
I disagree it takes two weeks of suffering to get used to motion controls. I felt like I "mastered" it during the Splatoon 1 testfire. Granted, we were all noobs back then, but I felt comfortable enough with motion at that time. It really depends on the person. I was pretty young and also didn't used stick aiming for precision in any game. I feel like I aim best in Splatoon compared to any console FPS or PC FPS game.
personally, dual stick aiming is perfectly fine for me 90% of the time in every other game but its hell in splatoon specifically. i can only use motion controls in splatoon
I'm at -A with sticks only in Splatoon 3(and the full controller is actually very good, better than joycons but I would use joycons for motion) , I will move to motion soon but I would prefer mouse, and I have seen people getting the mouse to work and it is devastating to opponents. I usually play almost every weapon and will change each match but there are some weapons that are much better with smooth aiming. I myself absolutely love the single player, the story, and world I can't get enough. The more campaigns, levels, level design, story, characters, enemies, and exploration of Splatoon world is what got me hooked on the series before I was even able to play it. Don't get me wrong, the MP and Salmon Run are fantastic but without the cool world, creatures, and story I wouldn't have cared. I hope in future Splat 3 updates we get more gamemodes, more players, more coop modes like Salmon Run(maybe we work for Deep Cut and raid and loot ancient temples ane places in the Splatlands), coop levels and campaigns.
Using mouse on splatoon is actually just stick input and not as devasting as you may think Its better than regular sticks but infinitely worse than fluid motion controls
you guys remember that one kid that got really really mad at a game and said the game was dumb/stupid because they cudn't play it/always lost? Well, MoistCr1tikal's that kid
As someone who just plays for fun I use stick controls, I also play lots of Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Valorant, the first three I play on Xbox so stick controls are my jam
I don't know about that 2 weeks suffering with aim controls, I got used to it pretty quickly, I never liked shooter games on consoles because I was terrible at aiming with the sticks, but splatoon changed that. Edit: Now I wish every shooter game on console had it.
Splatoon was the first console shooter I played (though I did play Minecraft with twin sticks) so the motion controls weren't any more unintuitive than the sticks would have been.
I do feel like I would prefer mouse and keyboard for Splatoon if it’s possible. Maybe it’s just because I played too many PC games, but +5/+5 on Splatoon feels hard, and not being able to turn 180 quickly feels a bit bad too. I do really hope Nintendo at least give us Flick Stick. Feels like it’s the perfect control scheme for Splatoon.
When I first got into splatoon with the 2nd game I found motion controls FAR better than stick controls in my first few games so I was surprised to hear that most new players just use sticks
Ngl I hope Critikal plays more Splatoon 3. I felt my woomy heart melt when he skipped the whole Salmon Run tutorial and said “I don’t need to learn it, it’s a kids game” 😭 And my soul just completely left my body when he skipped Story Mode cuz he thought it was just turf war with bots
thats pretty.. dumb... i hate people like that
He's not exactly very smart: he values his PRECONCEIVED ASSUMPTIONS more than new data, trying new things, and actually learning.
"turf war but with bots" where the hell did he get that from? lol
@@EchidnaKida a little extreme to assume he isn't smart just because he glossed over splatoon gamemodes lol. it really isn't that big of a deal he just needs to stop assuming dumb shit lol
I like Crit but..anything colorfull to him is a kids game
This is valid
critikal was playing against like, the worst players of all-time lmao
actually watch who he is fighting and not just him
while you can get better with sticks, critikal is really bad, he just got frankly a bit lucky
The last time I played a console shooter that wasn’t Splatoon I spent the whole time wishing I was just using a mouse and keyboard.
The same happened to me.
Warframe also has crisp motion shooting, and it’s free to play at that.
Fortnite, Overwatch “2”, and Risk of Rain 2 also have motion controls on switch.
@@poktheproto Fortnite even overhauled the motion controls and brought it to other platforms a few seasons ago
Wanna know a game that uses motion controls AND flickstick? Fortnite. It really makes me wish that splatoon had the option for flickstick
Yeah. I can't for the life of me use sticks
I had the same experience, and it’s true
i’ve grown up playing games like CoD and Battlefield, but i feel like with nintendo shooters something about stick controls just feels incredibly clunky and unusable compared to something like a Playstation or Xbox game
1:54 can confirm, i have never played a shooter game on a console before which is why its just so easy for me to adjust to motion controls
3:28 I use this constantly and I can confirm that it is really REALLY useful. You can catch someone of guard that’s chasing you, throw Charger aim of or to quickly disengage when you run somewhere that turns out to be a not so welcoming situation
Also if you do a quick turn to the right, you can almost squidroll forwards (doesn’t work so well on left turns since the brush is held on the right side of the character and thus doesn’t paint enough under you for left turns)
I'm guessing this is very useful when you have a big clam in blitz?
@@F2PAlius Squid School already has a short out that explains that squid roll does not let you cross grates faster
Trying motion first time online it's hard I'm trying it but it's funny when moist goes against an x rank level player
He regretted playing a "kids game"
Let's be honest, the bulk of the comunity of 95% of shotters, including the ones seen as mature are kids
The more grittier the shooter, the younger the audience
Honestly never knew that so many people hated motion controls lol, when I first started in Splat 1 I absolutely loved them
(Tho recently picking up 3 made me experience a bit of weird feeling with the motion at first)
i think what you kind of learn to do as a console fps player is use your character's movement and camera in tandem to line up shots, at least thats what ive always done. motion controls are still probably way better since it frees up movement as a tool to not get hit (and is generally more accurate and reactive) but it mostly still works fine.
personally ill probably try to learn motion controls eventually but since i main roller it doesnt feel like a super urgent need
@@ShadowSkyX rollers are beginner friendly, not a 'beginner weapon'.
I sucked, but as said: for some reason I got used to it during all the games up to Ruler during the splatfest, and funny enough I play the game exclusively in motion controls, the only way i'd play stick again is in handheld, and I'd probably just switch back to a more wide shot weapon for that.
tbh I use motion on handheld and its pretty good ngl
that was kinda what i did when i first got splat 2 tbh, i dont really remember if i hated it or not though lol it was like 4 years ago now
I can already see the Dunkey stans marching in to defend his absurdly one-sided "Satire" reviews.

Eh, I wouldn't say it's just because you never played a console shooter. I play both Fortnite and Splatoon 3, and it differs for me. Fortnite, I use stick controls. Splatoon 3, I use motion controls. I'd say it depends on which type feels more suited for you.

(But with splatoon’s sensitivity settings, because for some reason everything about BL2’s motion controls really does feel off.)
Edit: I just want to clarify, I don’t think that this should necessarily replace the existing controls altogether, but like… have it as a third option.
Obviously having more options is better than not, but using that option would mess with the feel too severely to be implemented officially (in my opinion).
ngl i basically use both stick & motion and i never really had a problem with that. i am a frontline only player though so it’s likely more of a problem for weapons like chargers
been playing overwatch on the switch recently and I'm not a big fan of the vertical control, at least when it doesn't have a reset button.

But they make this type of content.
Dunkey actually streamed the campaing and said: "yea this game is fun"

That ending felt kind of abrupt, I was hoping to hear some closing thoughts to wrap up the video 🫤

I agree
I also agree
I concur
Also, everyone knows Dunkey is a trolltuber and shouldn't be taken seriously.
right stick for big move motion control for small move
@@Patrick-ho3st nah i have 5/5 since i play close range
I don't think it would take 2 weeks to get used to. The thing that people don't get is pressing Y to reset the camera, I'm pressing it all the time while playing and it helps to make motion controls more comfortable for me.
Yes! Setting camera on respawn, while running around, it becomes reflexive past a point
Did stick controls for all of 2 and the premier fest, but since then I’ve been on that motion aim train and don’t plan on looking back.
Splatoon lacks these features, so the aiming with the sticks don't feel as good
Dunkey says that the Splatoon community is 7 years old? He's right in a way; Splatoon 1 as a game is 7 years old.
Yeah usually when I eject from the spawn launcher after choosing a spot, I'll hold my controller naturally then mash "Y" until I land.
I tried to learn motion control 3 separate times between 2 and 3 and the slightest movement makes the camera shake gives me motion sickness every time. So I'm back to stick control. Now 100 points away from S+ rank-up battle.
first time ever playing splatoon, i have learned me playing gyro(four games) OR sticks(once) regardless
it was really hard and i got demolished in my first turf war games lol.
so that being said, i'm going to just finish the solo campaign with gyro and see how it goes haha.
While I understand and fully accept that the motion controls ARE better.... The idea of grinding for weeks just to tolerate them seems very un-fun.
Having the motion go in one direction faster than the other, getting hung up randomly, the lack of vertical camera movement on the stick. its all so frustrating and makes me constantly wonder "Was I the one who screwed up? or did the Motion Controls mess up?"
I lose the ability to learn and improve, because I don't know WHAT the issue was in the first place.
As a person who plays on a switch lite I can’t do motion controls (it’s an option) but then I’m moving my entire body and I find it hard for focusing.
Dual stick aiming is hard. I had to learn it as adult. It took literal months to be capable. Years to be good.
But motion controls? I figured them out in a couple of hours. They never felt bad. Not a single day.
Wow I'm a brush main and I didn't know about the squid roll tech
Motion is the exact reason that I got into Splatoon. As a long time kbm fps player sticks control just feels inferior. Just look at the level of aim assist they add into console shooters. But motion is a real game changer, it's just feels right and performs so well.
So would going into other shooters with Motion Controls be recommended?
Splatoon is really the only controller game that I know where lots of players can actually snipe without aim assist.
I wanna punch him.)
Side rant aside, I cannot use motion controls so I will only use sticks.
I just learned motion controls because I thought it was cool and I didn't know you could change it.
Finally got used to motion controls, but it felt akin to forcing myself to use my non-writing hand to write.
He came out with that review days after the game launched so it's understandable
as an inkbrush main i can confirm that squid rolls are super fun to combine with the brush movement
What's the tune in the intro?
Btw you can lock your location for where you spawn at the start of a game by clicking ZR
I have only ever play shooters on PC and splatoon always felt like an extension to that, so i can see why someone who plays a lot of console shooters just picking sticks for a bit isn’t too bad
Exactly how I felt watching them hate on Motion
I disagree it takes two weeks of suffering to get used to motion controls. I felt like I "mastered" it during the Splatoon 1 testfire. Granted, we were all noobs back then, but I felt comfortable enough with motion at that time. It really depends on the person. I was pretty young and also didn't used stick aiming for precision in any game. I feel like I aim best in Splatoon compared to any console FPS or PC FPS game.
personally, dual stick aiming is perfectly fine for me 90% of the time in every other game but its hell in splatoon specifically. i can only use motion controls in splatoon
I literally can’t use motion controls 💀 I tried using them while playing with my brother and instantly felt sick 💀💀
Using mouse on splatoon is actually just stick input and not as devasting as you may think
Its better than regular sticks but infinitely worse than fluid motion controls
Imagine how good splatoon would be on Pc with mouse! but it's Nintendo
Tbf motion controls can be a pain. It makes me feel motion sick whenever I play Splatoon without stick controls.
you guys remember that one kid that got really really mad at a game and said the game was dumb/stupid because they cudn't play it/always lost? Well, MoistCr1tikal's that kid
As someone who just plays for fun I use stick controls, I also play lots of Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Valorant, the first three I play on Xbox so stick controls are my jam
I don't know about that 2 weeks suffering with aim controls, I got used to it pretty quickly, I never liked shooter games on consoles because I was terrible at aiming with the sticks, but splatoon changed that. Edit: Now I wish every shooter game on console had it.
i just cant use motion controls because i play on switch lite and i cant stand the screen moving
Can you review Solarlight’s “Why Controllers Don’t Suck at TF2”?
Both stick aim and motion aim feel awful when you first start, but only motion ever eventually feels good (or mouse and keyboard if you have a PC).
I have a ton of experience with stick aiming and I feel gyro aiming is still superior.
I've never been a fan of critikal and his content in general but dang 4:01 was clean
When I first got into splatoon with the 2nd game I found motion controls FAR better than stick controls in my first few games so I was surprised to hear that most new players just use sticks
