I took viewer requests for content creators who played or reviewed Splatoon 3 and have been going through and reacting to their opinions about the game. I think it leads to some interesting conversations about the game's design, people's reactions to it, and how we as a community are perceived from the outside. More of these to come!

i think you could pass as jerma’s cousin tbh
Like Gem said in the VOD, all white men look the same.
Yeah, he looks like Jerma if he was a real person /s
me when i see another white person

I was thinking the same thing
watching Jerma go from merely humoring us by playing this game simply because it was requested a lot, to genuinely enjoying himself so much that he refused to put it down, was an absolute joy to see. And those moments where he was like "oh, I get it now" and admitting that he underestimated it.
Yes! One of us! :D
I love how he wins his first 1v1 while barely knowing how to go into squid form
Jerma moment.
@@briandarnell2273 literal child moment
@@AGuy-vq9qp I might be missing this, but seriously, Jerma has so many funny things he says and just seems to know how to do things, you aren’t a literal child for thinking “Jerma moment” is something you should say. It’s probably helped that Jerma played a shitton of TF2 back in the day. He has the experience with a shooter past a casual level. I was *there* when I got the notif he was playing S3, and it was fascinating to watch him get ahold of the game really quickly AND have fun! It was equally as chaotic as a chronic Splatoon player.
I never played a shooter before I played Splatoon when it launched back in 2015. I don’t really remember what my experience was like since I only got to demo it at my cousin’s house before getting the game a year later, but I think I had an easier time sliding into the motion controls. I grew up on the Wii and Wii U, so I adapted pretty quickly to having to move the gamepad/Switch/controller quickly. My aim is uh, well it could use some work, but it took me a while to understand why people turned it off, since it’s always felt natural to me.
i had the same reaction with motion controls too! i think it helps that i prefer to learn about the game i want to play before i actually play it(no spoilers tho haha) which got me to understand how important motion controls is. maybe we should just tell stick control splatoon players to play mario kart wii first lol
I guess what really helped me get used to motion control very quickly was that as a mostly PC gamer I never really got into 3d console games that needed stick aiming, so I didn’t have to unlearn that way of playing. My starting difficulties basically were the exact opposite, i almost exclusively used motion controls to look around and had to actively remind myself to also use the right stick.
My problems so far seem to be tightening my wrist too much so i get stuck aiming just slightly left or right and never twitch to move it onto the player.
same! it sounds dumb but the way i got myself used to motion controls was by turning my sensitivity way down so it was closer to the camera in something like dark souls and then focused on super close range weapons like rollers and brushes for the first several hours. i basically played it like a 3rd person hack n slash till i was ready to turn the sensitivity up a bit more and try guns lmao
Saaame, I mostly played fps games on pc so I had no trouble switching to motion!
for me, i got the first game as a kid who never really played *ANY* shooters so i never really had that jarring experience
I never use the right stick to aim. I just use it to turn around and junk.
stick control only queue would be like "ok welp, have fun joining a game in 20 minutes"
Honestly testing motion controls in story mode is how I got used to them. Made it easier but I had to get used to resetting if I shifted position because it messes me up.
I exclusively used sticks for 1 & 2 im so glad i made the conscious decision to never switch off gyro for splatoon 3 within a week it felt purely natural
Splatoon 1 was actually my first shooter ever (I was like 11), and it was very easy for me to get used to the motion controls. However, I absolutely despise using stick aim on a lot of console shooters. Funny how that works in the opposite way as well.
As someone who had played thousands of hours with FPS games using mouse and keyboard, though I really wish I could play splatoon with a mouse, I still found it way easier to learn motion controls over the sticks, and I would probably not buy the game if sticks were the only way to play.
Lol same here. It was only a bit difficult to get used to because I never played a shooter before. I have a hard time playing with sticks because for me it just feels a lot more stiff, but for others it may not be
So that explains why did I feel so bad at Fortnite on switch
is anyone gonna talk about how great the channel's intro is? i have not seen anyone else mention it, i love it
I never actually played a shooter game on console seriously before splatoon 2, so playing with stick controls actually felt like a toddler learning to walk while motion controls felt natural.
You know, I think it would be a really cool idea covering turfing methods. It’s not something most people think about but how you use your weapon to paint the areas you go to can be very important.
I've made a video like that for shooters before but I agree that this is a good idea
lmao never excepted Jerma here
Hes always among us
@@narpas_ no way is that a reference to the hit 2020 game known as among us!?!??
genuienly th most unexpected crossover., i watched this jerma stream live all the way thru n was actually surprised at how quickly he understood how 2 play,,!!
I was in the stick control camp for such a long time. When I started in Splatoon 2 I immediately turned off motion. But after getting into b+ and a-, I hit a difficulty spike and decided go try motion again. Now, I struggle to play stick again because motion is second nature.
Tldr: even if at first it’s uncomfortable, try motion later on and you might fall in love with it.
Watching Jerma’s stream live was one of the most frustrating experiences 💀
its always painful, yet we keep coming back
I have never played a Splatoon game, and still haven't, but I found my way to watching stuff about it when S3 launched. Without playing the game, and never seeing a proper "new player" tutorial/tips videos it took me until recently to actually understand what people were talking about with the motion controls. I am getting Splatoon 3 for my birthday soon, and fully intend to jump headfirst into motion control aim
Happy Almost Birthday!
Welcome!
I think an advantage I had for adjusting to Splatoon's gyro aim is that I'd never _fully_ gotten used to controllers in shooters, with or without auto aim, so the motion was "Oh finally something closer to a mouse," plus I'd done enough games on the Wii that used subtle movements, albeit I don't think any shooters, so was used to the concept how how hand movements translate to controlling the action on the screen even if I wasn't 100% used to them with shooters at that point. That combination kind of made them feel fairly natural to me fairly quickly (Even if I don't use them optimally, I'm sure I probably do some aiming with sticks that I should do with motion and some looking with motion that I should be doing with sticks)
Gem, youre exactly right on being new to motion control. Ive played videogames religeously for 15 years, and just got into splatoon with 3. I hated motion at first, but after 10-15 hours using it i will never go back to sticks. It made me wish other games used motion control!
Can we just talk about the fact that he tried to ADS in that first 1v1 and ended up swimming towards the person?
Splatoon 2 was one of my first video games and now I am always able to use motion controls I feel so lucky
My dad got good at using motion controls after I insisted "its genuinely better for you in the long run, it's okay to use stick as training wheels but just compare how your aiming looks to how mine looks"
He still uses stick when on TV mode once in a while because he's far less comfortable there than handheld mode, but he's trying to learn.
Cool dad, happy for you
I love Splatoon and it's motion controls so much, I have started moving my controller in other games. I was playing sunset overdrive recently and kept doing that
At the very start of Splatoon 1 I didnt have wifi so I just grinded story mode since it was all I could do until I finally got internet and had so much experience using motion from the story I naturally felt good although the shellshock of learning what a turf war and all these rankings were was wild, I was instantly hooked, I miss Kraken Splash Wall 96 Gal 😭😭😭
I've played lots of shooters on sticks, but when playing splatoon I switched to motion almost instantly playing story mode. It felt so much better.
And I can't stop learning now because I began maining charger after trying and experimenting and I've only gotten better.
My first experience with gyro control was with the Zelda franchise, Majora Mask for 3DS and Breath of the Wild, in Majora at the start it felt weird, but dear me thanks to the shooting minigames I realized how damn fast and precise you can shot with them. Though I couldn't use them in public, so after finishing the game I gave it no more thought and treated it as just a 3DS gimmick, not realizing the potential.
4 years laters, in BOTW, as a mainly console player, I wasn't expecting the gyro controls while first aiming the runes, but since I didn't have trouble keeping my hands steady I didn't bother to turn it off, I dismissed it as a seemingly "harder" way to aim , without realizing the connection with my MM experience.
Slowly but surely, I realized the truth, how I started instively using the motion to do micro adjustments that were way more harder to pinpoint with sticks, and heck, then on there were a lot of times were I aimed without touching the sticks, against the stigma motion controls had, they just worked so well.
That was the point of no return, I didn't only liked the motion controls, I NEEDED them, aiming without them now feels even a bit clunky, it seems it'll take more time, but when needed, I hope it becomes mainstream instead of the "nintendo gimmick" some people see it as.
When picking up Splatoon 2 for the first time, I only had to get use to not being able to control the vertical camera with the sticks, but that didn't take much time, they just felt natural by now.
Just a while ago, I saw a streamer I follow turning off motion controls in both splatoon 3 and BOTW, I cringed soooo hard
6:58 That’s exactly what I did back in the day! I naturally had motion controls off by default when I played for the first few months, beating story mode and even getting to around B- rank. And one day I was like “hey, let’s just give motion controls a try!” Just for fun, y’know? Why not? And at first I was super disoriented and felt lost flinging my roller around but over the course of that day I was like. “Hold on. These controls are actually really smooth. Woah. Neat.” And I kept experimenting with it for days after that and never ended up turning it off.
That aside, I love watching people who haven’t played the game before just get *really into it.* Like a bunch of these youtubers and people I know irl are hooked with the ‘just one more game’ mentality. It’s exciting, seeing something I’ve loved since 2015 get so much positive attention. I hope the community continues to grow like this- it’s great
I was waiting to see if you’d do this XDD
I use stick controls, and I’m holding my own just fine in S rank. I also don’t use chargers. So, I like to think that weapon preference plays a big role on wether you need motion control or not.
Splatoon was actually my first ever shooter, so I guess your point actually puts into perspective how much of an advantage I had with the learning curve over some other players. I had no issues with the motion controls at all because it was all I knew.
I remember trying splatoon 1 at best buy kiosk back when it came out and hating the gyro controls. Years later i got into using a steam controller and now I play pretty much every game on my pc with gyro for camera controls.
What I always do with my friends when they were getting into Splatoon 3, is to just use motion controls through the single-player. It's a fun, and SAFE environment where you can make mistakes and get comfortable with them.
Motion Controls are a steep learning curve that the Singleplayer helps easy someone into with it's own gradual progression, but more importantly: You don't end up judging yourself for underperforming in multiplayer matches. It's so easy to let pride get in the way and default to what's easier because it still gets SOME results and its better than uselessly flailing your controller around. I remember when I first got into Splatoon in the 2nd game at the best of one of my favorite content creators, Chuggaaconroy, who immediately suggested keeping them on, and sure enough, I did... And now here I am in Splatoon 3 being one of my few friends who climbed up to S+, not exactly a flex here I know but I have some pride in it.
Motion controls is like the only thing that makes me able to aim properly on controllers for all shooter type games, so motion controls actually came quite naturally for me for the Splatoon series
=)
In fact, it's likely one of the reasons that I even play Splatoon in the first place. I don't play any other shooter games with a controller cause I just can't work with just sticks for aiming
„Is there sprint?“ lol 😂
Incredible how you were able to observe this truly insane lunatic for such a long time
I agree about "jumping on cold water"... Habits are painful to correct. So you get about double the pain if you already suffered when you were a beginner.
Thank you for telling people to stop being so pushy about motion controls. As someone with horrible wrist pain/carpal tunnel, it gets exhausting being told to use something that literally hurts me. I’m just trying to play the game dude
What convinced me to try the motion controls was Zelda BOTW. I couldn't aim precisely enough with just the sticks, so I stuck it out for Splatoon too. Although it took me a while to get used to the no vertical stick aim.
The hype you feel when you, as someone who is experienced and passionate about something, see a fresh new face begin to enjoy it as well...
was here for the stream but missed the jerma segment
very effective way to make me learn about something is to involve jerma thank you
Noted
i definitely agree about the roller thing. i originally started playing dynamo and then slowly moved onto shooters and now i often play splatling and have hit s rank
I dont use motion control because they dont let me look up and down with the stick and i have no idea why thats the case. It undermines the argument of using it for small adjustments when you have to move your entire wrist to aim up or down. Admittedly i do mostly play salmon run where that sort of action is more common but still.
About the motion controls, I remember when I first played Splatoon 2 and the game told me to move the controller to aim in the tutorial, so I did. I didn't even know I could use sticks at first. Now, 1000 hours later, still using motion, I still can't aim :D
My own story with Splatoon motion controls is that when I started Splatoon 1 I was strictly playing with just stick for a while both online and in story mode cause it felt so awkard to me until I hit a wall with DJ Octavio where I just kept dying over and over and over again until I decided to give motion controls another go and beat him on either my first or second try after turning it on and never turned it off since.
Splatoon was the first shooter I ever played. I remember my first game was Sturgeon Shipyard and I was using my friend's house and he gave me the Heavy Splatling with stick controls. I instantly swapped to motion when I bought my copy and I got better results
Motion was hard to pick up when I initially dismissed it in Splatoon 1. I was used to playing twin stick shooters on the Xbox 360, and stuck with the control scheme I was used to, but I did try turning motion on in Splatoon 2. That didn't last long tho, and I went back to sticks while I played my heart out. It wasn't until the Splatoon 3 Splatfest Demo Rock/Paper/Scissors that I threw myself into the deep end with motion controls. Having fresh matchmaking helped a bunch, as well as a non-zero amount of players checking the game out for the first time.
I had mechanical knowledge having played the first two games, so once I got past the initial hurdle of adjusting to the new controls, I soon felt at home. I tried going back to both previous games, and immediately had to reenable motion. If you haven't adjusted to motion yet, really give it one more try, and make sure you really, really try. It's worth it
Now that I’ve essentially mastered motion controls it feels weird to go back to other fps games, i find myself moving the controller like its gonna do something only to be confused on why the camera isn’t mohing
when I first played splatoon 1 I only used motion controls because I didn't even know a stick option existed, I am very glad I did not know a stick option existed.
I had a friend literally turn off motion controls before joining me, and it took a while to coax them back into trying it
I never had issues with motion controls, even back in Splatoon 1. I think it might be because I don't have FPS experience on console, so it wasn't a paradigm shift for me, it was the only thing I knew/know.
Fawful's Minion did a video, though it wasn't a stream nor a gameplay video but on one of his Top Tens he referenced it. And so did people like Ranboo.
Also, I remember in my first playthrough on the Wii U I remember tryharding it when I played it. Aside from that though, I can't really remember much.
I’ve been playing splatoon since the first game and I never turned off motion controls. I played a lot of Wii games prior so that’s probably why the transition was seamless to me lol
I remember my first match in Splatoon 1. Felt so stoic with the sticks. I only used them for like 3 matches and change it to motion. It was a nightmare. I used the Wii U pad. It took me 2 weeks to grasp motion controls. Plus I have constant vertigo. So motion made me nauseous. But not anymore. ( Even nowadays if I don't play for like a week, I get nauseous for the first hour) And it took me a month to realize that you could super jump to my team mates.🙈🙈🙈
Is this what Bravous became? I loved playing Among us back in the day with you all!
Yep! Some of the older videos on the channel still have Bravous branding. Bravous had to shut down as a business, but they were generous enough to let me keep the RUclips channel as long as I rebranded it, so now it's Squid School and we've ascended to the illustrious level of...uh...react content
I'm doing good things here, I promise lol
i just wanna point out judes face at 4:04 he looks like hes about to attempt mudrer or something
I hope Jerma plays again for the 1 year anniversary, honestly one guy needs to tell him theres a mop bucket and he'll hop on. Its been 2 or 3 weeks since he played the tutorial..
He do be beatboxing
the motion control learning curve is so funny to me. splat3 is my first splatoon game, and i didn't like the motion controls so i switched to stick. that lasted about a day or two before i decided learning motion the controls would be a much better use of my time than struggling with stick aim
My only complaint with motion aim is that the right stick doesn’t move vertically, that kept me away from even trying it for a while.
i remember when i played during the rock paper scissors splatfest i used stick beacuse i just wanted to have fun. but when the game came out and i started using motion controls ......... i can't believe there's people saying stick is better
It's hilarious. I totally get some people prefering stick but calling it better kills me. Like? 🤣😭
I don't think I ever had problems with the motion controls in splatoon, but that's probably largely in part due to all the time I spent playing the Wii version of CoD
this is my first time seeing Jerma’s face because ive never watched him and he just looks like you but if you were a gigachad 😭😭😭😭
I find it interesting how most new players are deterred from motion controls, especially in Splat 3 when they feel so much more smoother than 2! Well, at the same time I kind of get it as I was once like them. I didn't really realise how useful they were until I started watching competitive people play. I wanted to get good so I had to make that jump and once you get past that learning curve your skill level shoots up. It's very worth it!
I got 2 in Aug 2020 and after a few games I said "This isn't it for me" and turned motion off. I suppose I found motion quite jarring at first but perhaps it's just the default setting. I wonder if they made the default -3 to -5 ish if people would maybe be more inclined to play it? I doubt it, to be honest, but somehow I got to S rank with sticks before I started to struggle a little with gameplay. My opponents were outmanoeuvring me quite easily and I realised something needed to change within my gameplay if I wanted to get better.
When I turned on motion I did struggle but it took a bit of perseverance to finally feel comfortable with it and I breezed through S, and S+ somewhat. Now, I wonder how I ever was able to play sticks... I still have friends who play sticks and despite all my motion propaganda to them, they still won't budge pffft. Though, I do think motion isn't that important if you aren't looking to get good at the game, if you want to go competitive or get good, I'd say it's pretty much a must.
10:00 LITERALLY when I was playing identity V sometimes I had to wait for survival ranked for 15 minutes while the game just doesnt last that long and dont get me started on duo hunters with and hour of waiting while this mode isnt open 24/7
lmao your shade at Jerma's haircut choice
i wish jerma was real
It really click for me at 10:05 that Gem is Mirror Mode Jerma
LMAO THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO IDEA EVER
9:19 actually i think the game already does this to a certain extent because i've definitely noticed when i play handheld stick theres definitely other stick players (its especially noticable when people use chargers and they dont have a fluid aim)
That doesn't happen for that reason, though use of motion controls does correlate with a player's rating since the strongest players all but universally use motion, so you do see less of stick controls the higher you rank for correlative reasons if not causal ones.
My first 1v1 was when the original splatoon came out on my 13th birthday. It was my first shooter so I assumed all shooters had motion controls, I go into turf war for the first time and get sniped I was shocked that a gun could reach that far. Been playing chargers ever since.
I feel like if you've never played a shooter with stick controls before (like me) but only with the mouse (PC), you're quicker on the pickup of motion controls
I remember in Splatoon 1 I saw people at level 3 and started having access to the roller and I thought “wow these are experienced players and roller is so strong”. We were all little squids back then.
When it comes to motion controls, I found the pro controller hard to use since you have to move the whole controller. I recently discovered that motion controls are far easier for me with the joycons, which only has the gyroscopic sensor mapped to the right joycon, sorta replicating that Wiimote & nunchuck feel
who is jerma and why do i see him everywhyere, and why is he not real
he is the 985th government project synthesized by scientists to try and create the perfect life form (there are still a couple bugs)
5:18 I started my journey in the Splatoon series at age 10, on my Wii U, and I had no idea on how to turn off motion controls nor I had ever played any other console shooter before, so I just got used to them. Looking back, this was one of my largest strokes of luck, and one of the major reasons I am at 2000 X power today. I didn't have to learn this game, I assimilated it like my mother language, and it kinda feels weird to think about it.
ive been playing since early splatoon 1 and have exclusively used stick controls the entire time, bc i find motion controls really overwhelming 💀 but after watching i might try to give them a chance !
Splatoon was my first ever shooter lol, so I never really had that problem. I was just like “Oh sick I can move like that? Neat”
So my typing method is funny cause I'm not a touch typer. I do the tap tap tap, but I have enough skill with the tap tap tap that I can actually function when not looking at the keys. Like I'm prone to more mistakes but I have done it so much and for so long that I have that sorta instinctive spatial awareness to tap type without looking. I still have to orient myself when starting to type and I like to glance down to make sure I'm on track but I can go extended periods of time without needing to look.
I just picked up splatoon 3 as my first splatoon game. I have over 100 hours already. And haven't made the transition to motion yet. I know I want to eventually but I have a lot of ingrained skill on sticks from playing old school shooters that didn't have aim assist that I'm generally doing fine enough in matches. But at the same time I know I want to learn chargers so I want to practice motion. Funny enough, I tested chargers in turf war and on motion I was way worse at aiming than with sticks (2 splats on motion, 9 on sticks). So it's clear to me it'll take a lot of practice before I can aim on motion. Which is the part I'm not looking forward too since I'll have to spend some time being much worse than my current skill-level. Also, tip to stick players if you can't do motion for whatever reason. You can get a controller for the switch with extra shoulder buttons (they're in the place the Z button was on the N64) and bind controls to them. So you can jump and aim at the same time!
Using separated joy cons with motion controls on splatoon feels so natural, like I'm using a laser pointer in my right hand. It's the only way I can do motion controls. I can't use motion controls if it's one singular controller where I have to move both of my hands. I believe separated joy cons is the best form of motion controls.
It wasn’t the motion that I hated, it was that I couldn’t look up and down with the stick. But now I don’t look up and down in other games with motion controls
as a first time splatoon player i found it soo weird to play with motion but i knew i wanted to go with them and learn from the start, the first 2 hours were a pain but i got used to it, the best thing i ever did was change the settings to -2 nowadays i play -1 but the standard settings were like +2 i think?
5:48 Me who still does this, just really fast, despite being an adult: "..."
MY TWO FAVOURITE GUYS!!!!!
I wish motion control would allow to look up and down with stick :(
That is why I still use stick :)
I want to have Motion controls in every fps now
hah, my league learning curve was very tame because i had someone coaching me through the basics :3
there came a point where I just had to force myself to use motion controls lmao
I played all of splatoon 2's lifespan with sticks. I just refused to use gyro. Because with other shooters, I didn't need gyro and other single player games I didn't need gyro. I made it to S rank, like who's goanna stop me lol. But no I was bad at the game I swear I probably also got carried from a majority of Splatoon 2's lifespan.
Splatoon 3, I finally went ahead and just said... I'm goanna learn, I can do this. I'm going go force myself. And sure as heck I did do it, and I'm loving it. I regret not using gyro sooner 😭 It's so much easier and it just feels so clean.
I remember playing og splatoon 1 splitscreen where one player had to use stick controls and they'd lose 90% of the time lmao. U can get decent with sticks for sure but like you said the motion is so smooth and satifying
5:25 i don't know how but i was probably the only one to learn motion controls instantly.
Probably because i was a angry 12 year who wanted to kill everyone back in splatoon 1.
I basically got from b- to A in like a week.
I reached S but then i remembered that i was just feeding that i was just feeding after that.
I also learned gyro right away in splat 1, just came naturally
Am I the only one who used motion because I had no clue how to turn it off and was like, huh, I guess I aim with my arms and just went with it?
I loved one take he had on livestream which was: "I didn't know splatoon had all this.. I thought it was some cute small little side game where you paint the ground a little here and there and kill some people."
This is exactly how i felt.. I played the Beta of the first game on Wii U, i wrote it off as "Cool idea, will get boring quickly, not really for me.." Then i saw that there were 3 games in this series and my legit reaction was "What in the hell.. How does this game have 3 games..?!" So i bought it on a whim and man.. My most addictive game rn is Splatoon 3.. The amount of content was insane to me, the whole story mode was so fun, the online multiplayer (when it works) is so fun, all the different type of modes in anarcy are great and the fact that they rotate is great, all the weapons, clothing, locker items, card to collect, all the art in the lobby made by people and salmon run.. The fact that Salmon run has like 25 bosses, with a mega boss + like 10 special rounds where the water is high, glowflies, grill time, water is low, tornado time etc.. Insane.
I played Splatoon 1 and 2 (handheld) with motion controls, and I was very inconsistent, I would average 4 kills a game, then drop 15, but now I play handheld with stick controls, and I average like 6-8 kills a game, and still have those games where I pop off for 15, however I’m just more consistent
“Motion controls take an experienced player”
VR is quite similar.
Because you have a BRICK on your face.
And also you know… your controllers are your hands… literally.
For me, gyro controls were easy to use in Splatoon from playing 3ds and other Wii u games. But I could see it being weird for someone being completely unexposed.
I understand why many don't like motion at first but It still always seems so off to me to hear people complaining about the motion controls as I came into the first game shortly after launch as someone who never liked console shooters because of stick aiming. The motion felt so great to me right off the bat so after playing a bit of single player I jumped into turf war and slayed my very first match. I picked up on motion so quick I felt like one of the best players for a brief period of time until others got the hang of it and the completive players started emerging. Now I'm just an okay casual player who understands the reasons why I'm not better even though I never work on them.
