I tend to be very cautious when super jumping, to the point where I will not jump if I even see opponents ink in the vicinity. This video helped me realize it isn’t the ink i should be looking out for as much as my teammates reaction to said ink. Thanks, Gem!

I learned how to super jump at appropriate times through trial and error. I stopped jumping to there where a fight was happening so I won't be in crossfire. I died a lot from jumping so I started to look at the map more and where's enemy ink and where all my teammates are. Preferably around cover if I'm going to jump.

As a backliner, I don’t really super jump a lot. My teammates jump on me more, and these are some tips I learned for a safer jump.
    1) If backliners send “This way!” ping when you are going to respawn, this is usually a sign saying “jump on me”. They try to back up, secure the position around them to make jumps safer. But you also have to keep your eyes on the map and make your decisions because sometimes those backliners can die. (this can happen because those situations are usually disadvantaged in numbers)
2)When you are dead, and during the respawn time, you can send jump signals to your teammates. Sending jump signals 1~2 times before actually jumping can make your teammates back up for your jump. You can spam jump signals, but don’t do that because it can be annoying to some people.

I only missed the one you said would catch people off guard. My reasoning was that we were defending, and if just one opponent (like the wiper with ninja squid) caught my team off guard, my jump would likely be dead. Dying there would then give them a pretty strong push.
Another thing I'd like to mention, if you have quick respawn and stealth jump, I think it's almost always worth it to take aggressive jumps when your team is pushing on the other side of the map. Even if you die after jumping, you'll respawn quickly and very little harm will be done because the enemy isn't starting their own counterattack yet, which is worth the chance to help your team continue that push.

As an anchor player I rarely super jump in unless I’m at least 90% sure it’s safe. I reason that since I’m meant to be a super jump spot it’s not worth risking being taken out on landing and the team losing a jump spot for 10 to 20 seconds. I often elect to make the trip from spawn so if something bad happens to a team mate when they respawn I should be approaching the mid-field from a safer, more defensible position.
My advice to others is please be kind to your anchor and take a second to make sure they are okay to jump to. Often I’ve been in a less than ideal spot (moving between cover usually) and some one jumps to me leaving themselves fully exposed. I will always to try and protect the person jumping in, but I’m getting trauma from watching so many good squids get splatted in front of my eyes lol

Great idea! I'd absolutely love to see more like this!
Of note for future productions; It'd be nice to know what weapon you're playing, there's solid difference between when you should jump as a frontline or a backline for instance. Also, the cut to the next death tended to be slightly abrupt, it'd be nice to see a couple of moments before getting splatted in order to get a better intuition of the current gamestate. In particular it could be important to know what opponent splatted you and where from so you know if they're gonna be a relevant threat.

  • @laggalot1012
    @laggalot1012 Год назад +1

Let's give it a try... writing along with the video.
    1. Immediate answer, I wouldn't. I'm seeing ink come down by the feet of the teammates and they're both fairly far forward. Seems risky.
Less immediate answer, probably still no, but I am taking note of Stealth Jump and that one of the active teammates is a Hydra, in front of a wide-open area, so you might get away with it. But our team is in the minority, so there's a good chance the enemy could push enough to reveal the stealthed landing marker before completing the jump and punish it.
Hadn't considered the controlled space in terms of ink quite so much, or where the teammates where directing their attention. That's worth thinking about.
    2. Immediate answer, looks decent, I'd do it. Lot of orange, team is controlling a lot of space around it, but do take note of the opponent swinging around the left side. I don't think they're likely to catch the jump marker, but probably worth watching for.
Somehow, I thought that spot was a little further back. Probably still would've done it if I realised, but definitely dicier than expected.
    3. Immediate answer... I'm split. Gut reaction was jump, team is collected, distance from opposing team, and there seem to be no direct sightlines. But I don't like how far forward the enemy ink lies, and the runtime is pretty short, so it feels a little on the risky side for what you stand to gain. With more thinking time, I'd probably not jump. Did not think to consider the position and pressure from the Hydra specifically. I should maybe take more note of *who* occupies which positions and not just where any teammate is.
    4. Immediate answer is definitely no. Immediate pressure on the left person. With a bit of faith, though, one could reasonably assume that the teammate to the right swinging around the opponent (who I'm realising is carrying Rainmaker) is probably going to remove the threat quickly. On the other hand, enemy squid beacons are pretty close by, one jumping to the right beacon could perhaps trade? Can't see from this view where the rest of the enemy team is, if they're respawning or what and when. So I still wouldn't jump.
    5. No. Super short runtime to the action, team under pressure, just not worth it.
    6. Gonna say no, again. The left-most teammate looks safe, but I don't like jumping into such a boxed-in spot. I don't really like being there in general, actually. And anywhere else is just too dangerous. There's a crab-tank shooting down the middle, after all, and the ink situation looks poor.
After watching that clip go a little bit longer, and watching the left teammate go up the ramp and getting there once our respawn completes, I'd feel better about the jump. In hindsight, probably a really minor thing that shouldn't determine my choice here, but that spot always feels like bad news to me. ...I also should've considered that an opponent was just downed over there. That does improve the situation.
    7. Ongoing push, team isn't in active retreat, still firing back, not sure how safe it is, but I'd jump to try and help keep up the pressure. Reward outweighs the risk. ...Should've remembered the hut, but still fine, in the end.
    8. Same deal as #5.
Fun video, good exercise in logical reasoning and situation awareness and gives me some new food for thought as well.

For each clip, you pretty much went on to say exactly what I was reasoning in my head. I’ve been floating in the B+ to A- area as far as ranks. One of the most often reasons I feel I end up losing is because I typically play very offensive/skirmishy. But I end up getting teams with 1-3 players who feel the need to jump any time they respawn, regardless of what the map looks like.
I’ve had people jump to me when I’m RIGHT next to spawn- at that point they’re just jumping because they can!
What I hate most though is when I’m about to stealth kill and someone decides to jump to me, giving away my location and opening the possibility for both of us to get splatted.

My personal rule is if I see only a single teammate alive where I recently died pushing objective, I make sure to not jump in unless it's tower control, because generally getting one jump point back to near mid is better than all being wiped and being 1 down for longer when we could be stopping a full strength push. It's not a risk I find worth it unless I'm playing very specific weapons where I have QR as a safety net.

My distinction was that he came up the ramp to return mid. If he'd stayed down there in the somewhat awkward position, or started trying to flank, I didn't want to jump in on it.

I don't know if I'd really frame this as "a quiz" because it's really more a matter of risk vs reward compared to a "right answer" and "wrong answer". The first case perfectly demonstrates this. I agree with your assessment that this jump was risky, due to the two players being engaged with at least one other player and having little control of that area. However, it is also potentially a high-reward play, as the rainmaker is very close to the checkpoint and a successful jump there probably gets the checkpoint. Is it worth taking the jump? This is a very complex question that depends on many factors and I'd imagine if you showed this to a bunch of top players some would say yes and some would say no. The trick is mainly in learning to quickly determine the risk and reward so you can make the most informed decision that you can.

For example, the third jump ~4:30. I wouldn't have gone for bc theres a line of sight. If the hydra had pushed up to the edge I would've jumped then becsuse their view of me would be blocked.

I main Hydra Splatling and with my group of friends I'm almost always the super jump beacon. Matches live and die on my shoulders so this video helps alot since I rarely super jump myself and when I do I usually die.

When I first got my stealth jump on my favourite shoes I jumped 24/7.
Later on I learn that sometimes evene if you have stealth jump it's sometimes better to spawn at base.

I got them all right! But I couldn't put into words why I chose my answer for a couple of them, so it was nice to have the reasoning explained. I've been playing (not at pro-level, but definitely not as a "casual" either) since day one of the first game, so I've picked up a lot just through years of playing. Because of that, though, a lot of it has become instinct and gut feelings that are hard to explain beyond "I don't know, that's just What To Do in that situation!"
Thank you for the discussion of the thought processes behind your choices!

This video has made me realize why I am struggling to win games despite having a good KDA most games (I have a 2.3 kda overall) I am now going to actively assess possible openings for super jumps because my default is to swim to engagements.

Don't super jump on Mahi Mahi Resort unless you know it is 100% safe. It literally takes almost the same time to swim out there as jumping. Plus enemies can literally get out there and change the map in a blink of an eye. It is the least safe map to jump on.

And looking back at the first one, I easily figured out the answer and saw my mistakes; This video was actually really helpful, you have some of the best tips for Splatoon out there.

Erm, ACKCHUALLY that is NOT green. I'd say its more of a cyan.
Okay jokes aside, good video. The one youd thought would trip people up i wasnt so sure about because I couldnt clearly see if there was more paint going down on that side. Other than that i pretty much had the same answer as you.
I think you should've included some tower control scenarios where you jump in despite knowing its not safe to get the tower to move a bit further.

I think it would have been worth mentioning that you are using Stealth Jump for all of these situations. Makes certain jumps much more safe than they would’ve before, especially in Rainmaker.

I'm pretty sure I do mention it at one point, but yeah, I didn't think about it until later in the video. It's also sort of a default shoe ability for a lot of weapons right now though

I typically don't super jump in if there is a fight breaking out where I want to go, or if our team is down players in that moment. Some maps I find it isn't even too necessary like inkblot art academy of museum d'alfonsino where mid is just a few seconds of swimming away. Unless our team has pushed up or something, then I might.

I’m quite a cautious player. Given that I like to play anchor, maybe I should jump to get back really fast bc of my heavy weapons slowing my swim speed but also not given how aggro/forward many of the folks playing in B+/A- are. My choices as the video goes:
    Jump 1: no jump
    Jump 2: jump
    Jump3: no jump (“incorrect” answer)
    Jump 4: no jump
Jump 5: no jump no reason to really
    Jump 6: jump
Jump 7: jump. I should jump but I probs wouldn’t. I think I can recognise good jump opportunities but I don’t always capitalise on it
Jump 8: no jump - no reason to jump so close to base
Jump 9: 10/10 jump cut from post production Gem.

4:40 I was basing my decision of not jumping purely from the previous freezeframe which was different from the currently shown, freezeframe as it showed an enemy on the right side on the map. They could be intending to flank that area, in which case not jumping would get you an easier and marginally faster counter. 4:18 is the original freezeframe.

I'd be curious to know what the rough breakpoints are for where super jumping is actually slower. I know (at least without quick super jump) there's a decent area within the base, but it would be interesting to time it and see where yge break even line is.

As a dark tetra dualie player I super jump in a lot more dangerous situations and play more agressive because I have the dualie dodges to get me out of a lot of those situations and I barley ever die from jumping

  • @fearsoda02

    Huh!
Still at the beginning of the video and I just kinda go based off of intuition nowadays but, my reasoning was always "if i see an enemy on the map, means one of my teammates is engaging. If i see multiple i wont jump. If i see one but they're backing up my entire team, i wont jump. If i see none, i jump to the person closest to spawn unless that person's in mid, then i jump to whoevers behind a wall"
Keeps me from revealing sharks in enemy territory and getting caught in the crossfires of a fight that i jumped in the middle to. I do have the bad habit of staying in spawn watching the map for too long though
