i love how gem’s chat goes dead silent when something super important is said, its like chat is really focused on what gem is saying and it makes me feel good for some reason
In Japanese, they call this movement technique 雷神step(Raijin step/thunder step) This is the first video explaining the risk of using this skill in the game. Thanks for your video.
I think I intuited the "drag your aim down while shooting to make a solid line faster", so it's nice to see that confirmed and get other tips along the way!
Underrated movement option is jump height. You can vary your jump height with how long you press the jump button. If you're jumping around a lot, especially from platform to platform, you should try to jump as low as you can but still enough to make the jump to cut down on air time. Over the course of a match, those small milliseconds add up to a lot of time save.
0:45 This technique is alternately called splat hopping, squid (octo) hopping, and bunny hopping. If you suddenly find yourself surrounded by opposing ink - whether by a misplay or a sudden barrage of opposing specials, this can potentially help you get out of a bad situation in a pinch. Not mentioned in this Q&A session is the technique of sub strafing. If you press and hold [R] (sub weapon) while swimming, then release [ZL] to stop swimming, and finally press [ZL] again to restart swimming, you can bypass the deceleration that normally takes place when changing directions while swimming. It is not easy to perform at first, but with constant practice, you can pull it off just like the top players!
I mean really, once you start incorporating sub strafing and ledge cancelling into your movement it’ll just come naturally, along with just having a general idea of where you need to be (hiding, swimming towards objective, stalling, etc)
@@micdonallls8853 if you hold the R button while pressing ZL to go into swim form, you can start swimming at top speed - that’s sub strafing Similarly, if you press R at the top of the ledge while climbing up a wall and then continue swimming with ZL once you’re over the ledge, you spend less time in the air and can continue moving quicker. That’s ledge cancelling (you can try practicing this on the boxes in mako mart! It’s super useful)
So something that's probably obvious to a lot of people, and so isn't said, but that I only found recently is that when you're just trying to move faster *don't let go of ZL* when you pop out of the ink. if you just hold it and tap the fire button you'll be back in the ink and swimming so much faster.
I don't think I'm ready for this technique yet, but I'm getting better at movement in general, I just have to remember that squid surge doesn't give you armor like the roll, I had a couple matches last night where I became a firework because of that. Also, I experienced a glitch where I didn't get any height using it, I think what happened was the game over corrected, and thought there was enemy ink in the way despite it not being on my screen, but I can't be sure.
You can do a partial Squid Surge, which takes you exactly up to standing on the very edge of the ledge. This helps you avoid wasting frames in the air while you’re still working on your snap aim.
I usually use bombs and long shots to move faster, and I dont use motion controls bc it’s hard for me to use them to be fairly honestly- but I can see splatdashing does the trick for you
Idk what about this game but it always feels like im just stuck in one place as im getting shot, and no matter how I move its either i hit them first or they hit me and whoever does that first wins.
You'd think as a hydra main I'd find this info completely useless, but I STILL found some good info here, such as when your aim goes too low it sets the cursor placement as the default
there was one time where I got someone (don't remember who) to try out splatoon 2, and they were really struggling to figure out the movement. afterwards, I showed them what it looks like with some practice, and they were really amazed at how fast I was going.
There's also another technique called substrafing. When you want to change directions or retreat quickly and efficiently, hold ZR, then immediately move the joystick in another direction, and then finally, return to swimming (ZL). You can let go of ZR after doing all that.
this is a very useful technique, esp since i main splatlings since splat2! getting out of a dangerous situation or positioning urself so u can win a close encounter is easier bc of this ^^ (i learned it from watching magiace and kaji’s splatling gameplay!)
Though this goof up my aim, its still useful for escaping even if your technique is not perfect. The amount of time this saves me from getting overwhelmed

3:16 is that comment about big bubbler true? If so, is it a similar idea to splash walls in S1 (where if you stand precisely in the middle of it, you're basically invincible except to bombs until the wall disappears)?
I'm not sure if that means the middle of the bubbler's wall or using the generator as a shield or standing in the middle of the generator. If I'd seen it I'd have asked for clarification
@@Randomness-hz7kj interesting… if they give it to something like jet that can easily hit you from in the center without patching it out, it’s over for us 💀
imo this is the real reason sticks are so inferior to motion. yes they aim worse but aiming in splatoon is just as important for movement as it is for hitting things.
I have been looking through all your stuff, desperately trying to improve and figure out why I'm struggling in B rank, and then today got thrown into a match with at least 4 S+ players. I was solo queuing into open at B+, there is no reason I should be seeing S+ badges in game.
That is a pretty big gap. I'm sure it'd make more sense if we could see the Glicko powers of the players but I'm sorry it felt discouraging either way.
@@SquidSchool I brought it up in a few places and was told that Open apperently has no rank based matchmaking. Which I suppose makes sense if you're playing with a group of different ranks, but I don't like the thought of the game making no attempt to try and put players who load it up alone into places they belong.
I see you dont use ninja squid in this clip, I feel like ninja squid makes me unbearably slow, and when i switch off of it to like +2.0 swim speed, i feel so much better. What is your opinion? Edit: I forgot to add, i use ninja squid in ranked right now because its meta, because i die so often to it, and i know that it trips up my opponents too. I just want to know if you think like trading ninja for more swim speed is viable in comp
I've been seeing junior players prioritize ink efficiency so they can throw more bombs so I just copied those builds to the extent I had gear available for it. I don't main the weapon so I haven't spent any resources making gear for it.
As a avid Ninja Squid fan in Splatoon 2, I ran 3 subs of Swim Speed to offset the slowdown, and apparently Ninja Squid is less Gear Dependent in Splatoon 3. I run it in 3 also, and it was one of my first Gear Targets. In both games I play a Medium Weightclass Weapon (Octobrush in 2, Sloshing Machine in 3). Apparently in 2 you needed 5 subs (or One Main and 2 Subs) to fully offset the Slowdown for the Medium Weightclass, but I willingly sacrificed some speed for low visibility in ink. In 3 I currently run 2 Subs (currently on my Shoes, want them on my shirt) and I think I move about the same as normal, not sure if that’s really the case lol.
Probably not as much because a Blaster simply can't scramble like that. A Blasters' greatest friend is squidrolling. Being able to do that as early as possible is incredibly valuable to your mobility, allowing you to zoom your woom places no woom thought possible.
Blasters do paint their feet with every shot but the painting pattern here only applies to weapons that shoot like shooters do (so splatlings and dualies, for example)
Another thing I've personally noticed with the movement tech (I think it's called scrambling in English, 雷神ステップ/raijin step in Japanese): The faster you do it, the slower you'll move to a certain degree. Giving yourself some time to pick up swimming speed before shooting your feet again will let you move a little faster. Swim speed up improves its effect too. Unfortunately slow startup/high end lag weapons may not be able to utilize this effectively.
Oh one more movement tech, not sure if you've seen it is a quick climb for short ledges. Great for tower control. While near a wall, jump, paint wall with one or two shots, squid form, climb wall, all in one fluid motion. After jumping you shouldn't touch the ground. With practice you can get 2 shots off while in mid air and climb higher walls like the one in the back right of the shooting range (with certain weapons of course)
@@nightismonochrome The true test of skill for this specific tech is to do it with the L3 Nozzlenose. I got so good at it in Splat 1 back when the weap was good. However, low fire rate weapons and ones with lag struggle to quick climb too...
