I tried implementing this use lately, it is very useful indeed ! I often see teammates booyah-ing me back when they safely land, so i assume that's something lots of anchors tend to do as well.
Really fulfilling to hear Squid School advertise the way I've been using the "Ouch..." button for a while now. One of the worst feelings in the world is when I'm hitting it to try to say, "Look out! They're behind you!" as I watch my teammate get splatted by the flanker they had time to look for but did not; I always make sure to, "Booyah!" when someone avenges me, and it's even better when they, "Booyah!" in response. Like, yeah!! We did team stuff with our limited communication!! Go us!!
Whenever i see somebody get a revenge splat after my ouch I always booyah back as not only a sign to the other members that the threat has been dealt with but for morale as i respawn back to the field
I do this too. I really like he mentioned how I use ouch. I will hit it again if they killed someone and there is still another enemy there. Or if I died, but took my guy with me but see another opponent coming from the same direction, I will use ouch then. If I die and didn’t kill my opponent, but my team does, I do a booyah. It really is a shame that they haven’t added more communication options on the D pad when they have 2 free buttons. It really is a waste.
Aaa I do the same thing! Or if I'm in a fight w/ someone and someone helps me get rid of them, I hit "booyah!" Like a "heck yeah! You saved me! We got em!"
One thing to note is that in the Japanese version of Splatoon 3, "This Way!" turns into "カモン" which says "Come On!", making the whole "I use this for spots to avoid" use even more difficult.
This is true for every language other than English as well. (come here, to me, etc.) I think most people use it in the intended way, but that ambiguity is certainly present in the English version
@@binarycat1237 in American English we often use "C'mon" as an expression of disappointment and annoyance and people would use it like that. Many people had no idea it was supposed to mean "Come this way!" so they changed it.
@@LovelySoftSnow the opposite actually, NA directly translated "C'mon!" from JP (PAL used "To me!") even though PAL was the the one that translated "Nice!" from JP (instead of NA's "Booyah!")
The explanation at the beginning about no ingame voice chat made me realize that that's one of the big reasons I managed to get into Splatoon. I usually stay away from anything multiplayer unless if I have friends who already play it or there's also a big single player mode, just because I don't like being screamed at. I was hesitant to try at first, but Splatoon still looked like a lot of fun and after playing the testfire splatfest, I was hooked! I tend to use Ouch! to signal others the splatter is still nearby, Booyah! at the start and as a way of saying thank you and I haven't used This way! much, so that part of the video was most helpful for me ^^
@@Ligmamonkey True that, but the damage had already been done. The pressure of feeling you *have* to play well, otherwise your whole team will hate on you and you'll be the reason why you guys lost was already there. Nowadays I can be like "fuck those guys, I'm here to have fun" and am even getting into Overwatch, but the first thing I did after downloading the game was muting voice and the chat XD
Also the lack of communication turned me away. As it feels primitive compared to playing on PC. If don't like being shouted at, always slam mute. Console online is primitive.... I feel there is barely a soul on the other team with the lack of response. I expect trash talk, that bantering is to me normal. To be fair. I like the gameplay of Splatoon, but had to spend a 20 dollar year fear to enjoy all this game has to offer. Great gameplay, but it is missing something.
I remember getting rocket league on switch a little after starting Splatoon 2, and I was astonished at the number of communication options. You had 16 total, 12 of which were shown to both teams and 4 of which were just with your team. Each direction on the dpad opened a second menu with 4 dialogue options each, all of which were customizable with hundreds of options. It was clunky at first, but I eventually memorized the most commonly used dpad combinations like for "I got it", "all yours", "good luck", and "good game." I could not believe how incredible the amount of communication was available in this game, when in Splatoon 2 there were only ever 2. Im not saying Nintendo has to copy this system, but like everyone said, those other 2 dpad buttons are RIGHT THERE
We even have the new lottery/catalog system. There is no reason for there NOT to be at least a few variations. Have the early catalog be general/simple stuff and later catalog items be something a bit more specific.
i really hope they add more communication options in a future update. would be such a waste not to especially considering youre playing with randoms without vc the majority of the time 😭
@@cathackzz Sadly, this is (translation changes aside) what we've been dealing with for 7 years - If they were going to improve the coms system, even just additional d-pad options, it feels like they'd have done it going into a new game rather than as an update, especially since the huge leaps forward to non-verbal communications, IIRC, in came via 2019 with Apex's Legends' ping system that's been adopted by a bunch of other games since... And not Splatoon.
also an important thing to mention: sometimes a teammate can accidentally booyah if they’re attempting to super jump back to spawn, since that also uses down on the D-pad. Especially if it’s in rapid succession it might be a panic ping rather than on purpose!
This was actually something I had in mind to talk about and forgot to get into the script by the time I was actually around to writing the booyah section. Thanks for pointing it out! I made a short about this.
It wasn't mentioned, but when someone is This Waying in Clam Blitz while holding lots of clams, please give them your clams so they can make a power clam.
I find that "this way" really only works well in salmon run, especially during low tides or at the start of a round. I literally never use it in any other game mode because of how ambiguous it is lol
Ye. It’s really helpful when the round starts and you’re looking for salmonids and a teammate says “this way” to guide you to where they are. Like “hey I found one over here”
Honestly, i use this way only when i just splatted 2/3 people and the mid is clear or way to their spawn is free in turf wars when i frontline. otherwise its just to spin the shit out of the bloblobber in the air in the most silly way possible because it looks super cute
Not saying they should change it but “This way” really needed a less ambiguous substitute, something like a “C’mere/Come here” would’ve been so much helpful imo for ranked/turf. “This way” is definitely only reserved for SR for me
The woomy button is the most important button in the game and you know it. If you play split joycons, incidentally, you can use the controller mapping in the Switch system menu to map one of the SL/SR buttons.
I was about to comment about it! The fact you have four more buttons on Split-Joycons adds options for the D-pad, especially when the game you play requires you to move to correctly play. And I find Split-Joycons less restrecting than the full Controllers, especially as a Ballpoint user.
I use a pro controller and I mapped down to the L button. Makes booyah inputs really easy, but now whenever I play different games I try to press L to scroll down in menus xD. It is a sacrifice I'm willing to make though, because I like to be able to use booyah whenever I need to, without it affecting my ability to do other things in the game
That's cool! I bet someone could make a 3D-printed joy-con grip with custom back paddles which trigger the SL and SR buttons when pressed to make them accessible in a traditional controller form factor.
My favorite is the solo queue clam blitz brush special, where a brush runs through a contested mid without a clam, spams this way, immediately dies, does it again. Then enemy breaks basket and the brush runs past, sits under enemy basket spamming this way while the enemy scores more clams.
Sometimes when no progress is being made and the team is just sitting on power clams that's the best thing to do. If the middle is contested through the whole game and a single point decides the game sometimes you should trust the brush
I got into the habit of using ouch whenever I die with an enemy nearby, as a warning. I almost started worrying I should use it less frequently in case it was annoying or something but this is reassuring haha. Even in S rank I feel like it doesn't get used often. Also, unfortunately using your right hand to stretch over to the D-pad to booyah doesn't always work very well with small girl hands 😭
I have the same problem with girl hands LOL; I actually use the Power A Nano controller, which is meant to be a travel controller, but it's small size fits by hands really well. it's also as good as a pro controller, which I can't use for an extended period, because it hurts my hands. Maybe one day we'll get controller that fit different hand sizes; Xbox controllers are the worst :)
i use joycons and when i was super dedicated to hydra in soloq, i remapped my controls so that i could booyah by pressing the left stick. i like it because i can booyah at basically any time now, i can spam it pretty quickly for booyah bomb but i'll still be ready to get moving again, and panic jump-outs are faster.
Another powerful use for Booyah! is in Salmon Run to notify people that you met quota and that we can play it safe and defensive if the wave is particularly difficult.
I use Booyah! to celebrate clutch quota fulfillments, but never as a signal to tell my team the quota was filled. I don't see a need for it because when we're in a tense situation near the end of a wave, I'm always keeping an eye on the quota. Also, filling the quota produces a visual affect that helps grab your attention. If your teammates need you to tell them the quota was filled... they're not good at Salmon Run yet. Don't hold their hand.
I use the Booyah! in Salmon Run in a few different ways: The first use is the obvious start of wave, end of wave, and end of game booyah. So satisfying when they all booyah back, too. I also use it when quota is met, glad to know I'm not alone on that. My final usage of it is probably limited to just me. Whenever there's a special occurance, I booyah twice in quick succession before the wave starts, to let my teammates know.
I often use "This Way!" when a teammate is trying to cover every single square inch of the base, especially when respawning and swimming past them for the 2nd or 3rd time. It pretty much never works, but I'd like to think at least one time it'll get the point across...
@@Sickmmaner it happens at high ranks too - some people are missiles carried and eat up all the valuable home base ink before half the points are on the board. Makes it frustrating even into S+ 3 where I am. If we're losing bad later, we want that easy to access turf to get a booyah bomb or, indeed, some missiles.
It's a good idea at least! I also do this during Clam Blitz - I've seen quite a few teammates with a Power Clam trying to score on their own basket, and whenever I do, I pick it up, spam "This way!" and swim as close to the enemy goal as I can before I get splatted. Usually I don't get it all the way but I like to think it helps them figure it out.
Something that's worth considering is that the vast majority of the players in the continent of the Americas (remember that online game is devided by regions) speak Spanish, and in their screen "This way!" is "¡Vengan!", which means "Come here!". So more of a reason to not use it as "Danger here" as you mentioned. I don't know how it goes in Portuguese, but I think in French it's "Par ici !" ("Over here!").
In French it translates pretty well, we also have "Joli !" for Booyah (which arguibly gives us the best translated name the Booyah bomb, introducing LE JOLIZATOR). I saw someone mentionning that the down option for Japanese players translates more to "Come on !" rather than "This way !". So yeah, depending on the language of your mates, the option can be very tricky to use, if not dangerous even.
@@skadi2911 That's why I say it's important to keep that in mind. For "booyah" here we have "¡Genial!", which as a French speaker would guess, means "Great!" or "Nice!". The booyah bomb is named "Bomba genializante" ("Nicifier bomb"). "Le jolizator" does sound pretty cool, though. :D
I love how creative other languages are with "booyah!", in German it's just "Cool!" and I feel like there's missed potential. Really interesting that there are some differences in the meanings though!
In italian for booyah we have "Grande!" which takes the "Great!" meaning. In italian, the booyah bomb is called "Granbotto (gran botto)" which translates to "Great Boom" or "Big Boom" (grande can also mean big). Also, "This way!" in italian gets translated to "Con me!" which means "With me!" "Follow me!" "Come with me!" So I wouldn't use it to warn about danger
@@HLRxxKarl every time I'll say "this way" at least five times when there is someone in our base, but he won't die, and no one comes to help in any of the games
I once got a random team in single game solo ranked. I think we went about eight and zero I'd never won that many times in a row. You can bet there were lots of booyahs going on lol. For me booyah is one of the more important ones for keeping up team morale, once you get momentum booyah and keep that positive energy going. I think it does make a bit of a difference for how well things go
This, and also partying with their holograms in the lobby. Almost 100% of the time I find that teams I party with in the lobby will booyah at the start of the game and be more congratulatory of each other when it's going well.
That literally happened to me 50 minutes ago. I can’t believe I’m saying this but that was by far one of the most phenomenal solo queue no vc sessions I’ve ever played.
There's something to be said about game design in this front cause I never read anything about how the community uses booyah, this way and ouch and yet I've been using these exactly as described in the video ever since Splatoon 1 Anyways, great video as always!
I’ll often use the “This way” ping when I’m alive, in a safe spot, and teammates are dead and need a safe super jump spot. Learned this when a teammate in one game would multi ping it while noticeably being still behind cover while I had the map up. I could only assume he hoped his dead teammates had their map up and noticed. Thought it was a great idea.
Definitely a good use for anchor players. I often see mates Booyah me back when i give them a safe landing spot using "This way !", so i assume it's getting more and more common. It really helps that the game lets you know when someone wants to jump to you. Though it can be confusing if the rest of the team is still alive and fighting, and distract them.
I recently tried out Overwatch 2, and was honestly amazed by how many communication options it had through the pinging system, and it can be done on a controller! It’d be incredible if something like that were in Splatoon.
I recently replayed Pokémon Unite as well and even they have some good communication options. If they ever going to update, maybe they can make it so that the left and right D-pad gives a customizable call out we can put. Maybe something like "Retreat!" or "Watch out!" Or even "Thanks!"
@@Riodile unless someone on my side has the booyah bomb - which I do try to help with whenever I can - I use booyah as a way to thank them for splatting the player that splatted me.
@@Riodile I feel like part of the reason Nintendo doesn't want to add more specific positive responses is because it opens more windows for salting/griefing - case in point, Rocket League's "What a save!" quickly turned from a way to praise someone's goalkeeping abilities (as it was intended for) into a sarcastic reply whenever teammate fails to defend the net. Not that it's much of an issue in most games (honestly, getting "whatasaved" is more funny than anything), but Splatoon is heavily marketed at youngsters, so I can get Nintendo wanting to eliminate as much potential toxicity as possible.
Another option I'd give for easier Booyah-ing is to use the switch's in-built controller remapping to map L to down on the d-pad, and down on the d-pad to L. L is never used during gameplay, so you aren't missing anything, and if you play clawgrip (with a finger on each bumper and trigger at all times), you can always Booyah without having to reposition your hand. It's what I do, and I can safely say that I booyah far more and far easier than I have in the past
Same, since reaching over mens I basically have to let go with my right hand, except I mapped L to left d-pad and now I simply don't have the left d-pad button ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've also remapped my controller, it's very useful. Personally, I press the left thumb stick as a way to booyah. It's just so nice to be able to move around and press booyah at the same time
I feel like they can keep this way and booyah but utilize left and right for mode specific commands like telling someone “On the Tower!” or “Give clams” or even a regroup command to keep everyone from going one by one into the slaughter house.
i personally think they should split "This Way" into "Follow Me" and "Watch Out" and use the remaining d-pad part for mode-specific callouts depending on the mode
It seemed like that to me as well, but it just goes to show how braindead brush players who rush the basket in clams are. Even if someone jumped to the brush to help flank, what would they do? The enemy already has their basket open, so they can't score any clams until the basket closes. It would only give them a bigger disadvantage.
what u said about voice chat helping women and minorities play actually is so true. as a woman i feel sooo much more comfortable doing a random queue of splatoon than say, overwatch or valorant. id never actually realized that was why!
Yeah. It’s nice not having voice chat. Especially when I was very early in my transition, I was constantly misgendered when raiding in Destiny 2 for example. It was very rough.
I often see "this way" being used as a "let's push the objective" especially in rainmaker. If I got sharked and my killer goes back to sharking I press ouch three times in advance, it sounds like an alarm and people have mostly been able to pick up on it.
I completely agree with you about toxicity in other games with voice chat or even text chat. I’m trans, and online gaming with strangers is always a mess, especially when I’m by myself. Destiny 2 (even the cooperative experiences), Overwatch, and League were all games I experienced a lot of harassment from other players and it was almost always because of my identity. Final Fantasy 14 and Splatoon 3 are the only online games where I can play by myself and feel completely safe amongst the community of players. Sure, I could just not use text chat or voice chat in those other games, but it’s not exactly fair that if I want to have the same advantage of communication as others I have to experience toxic people.
That last paragraph is key. When people were fuming about this when the game launched, the thing I kept hearing was "just have it default to 'off'", but you _know_ if there were native voice chat that were easy to switch on, the Miiverse posts would all be "tfw you're stuck on a team with 3 VC-muters" and "i'm begging you: TURN. VOICE. ON." When Splatoon dropped, gaming culture was, like, peak toxic. We were fresh off GG; it was still common to hear gay slurs on XBL but they'd only recently stopped banning people for saying they were gay in their bio. Part of me wonders if I'd still even be doing multiplayer gaming if Splatoon didn't actively try to curate a non-toxic community.
Yeah. While I don't have the same direct harassment concerns (While I'm enbi my voice is pretty stereotypically masculine), I have a bunch of phone anxiety relating to autism which leads me to just generally not enjoy voice chat in games regardless of how toxic or otherwise it happens to be. My bemoaning Splatoon's d-pad options is that since 2019 especially we've seen just how _good_ non-verbal coms options in online shooters can be (I think Apex Legends is the game that really kickstarted the trend). And here we are, still stuck with Booyah, This Way, and Ouch (Or Help for those of us who play Salmon). I don't want VC with randos, I want good non-verbal coms options.
The problem, though, is that now everyone has the disadvantage of not being able to communicate clearly. We shouldn't have to come up with roundabout ways to communicate with each other when we already have a perfectly understandable system: the english language. Whether or not you want to use voice comms is your own personal choice, but I believe that it should at least be a feature for those who do want to use it.
I never really thought about using Booyah these ways, will def try to use it more. Also I think I know why they did not add 2 more comms. If there would be 2 more they would of course need to translate them into all the languages the game supports. When you translate words they don't tend to take up the same amount of space, so I think they just didn't bother trying anything new. Either they should make a new system or one simple solution could be adding left and right arrow icons that swap to 2 more communications, maybe "Charge!" and "Retreat!".
@@anarkuu I dont mean the translating itself. The problem would be the inconsistency you get by just adding 2 more comms to the left and right. Either the d-pad UI placement changes depening on the language you play or the text has to be condensed to fit this set spacing and becomes illegible. Japanese just takes up way less space than for example German.
@@memiiboi Still doubt that would've prevented them from adding new comms if they really wanted to. I think their logic was that people can voice chat (through the most inconvenient, Nintendo-esque method that is the switch's mobile app) if they want to communicate beyond the two existing comms.
@@DOCTOR.DEADHEAD Yeah you are right, they really dont see any reason with voice chat being an option, easier to just copy-paste the Splatoon 2 d-pad. I guess what I wrote is more so why they cannot just add 2 more comms and be done.
We definitely need those other two D-pad buttons to be used. The first one should obviously be "Watch out !" for when you get flanked and splatted or just loose a trade (and end the ambiguity of "This way !"). As for the second one, i like your suggestion of "Play the objective !" as it could either be an indication to make your team aware of numbers advantage and start a push or just call back that brush player who's flanking for nothing. Though, one could argue that "Let's push !" or "Let's moove on !" could be less weird for starting a push (because "Play the objective !" can also sound like something offensive rather than an indication, but then again, that's the point for that brush player so idk which solution is the best tbh).
I think "Push forward!" and "Fall back!" would also work great. I think those two would help a lot of people (particularly new players) get a better understanding of when the best/worst times are to push.
As a person who has already been doing some but not all of these. This has most definitely opened me up too more possibilities. So when do we start forcibly teaching everyone morse code?
As a primarily salmon run player, keeping morale high feels like a must when you get to high ranks. It's so easy to blame things on teammates when you all have to rely on each other so much. A simple booyah chain at the beginning of the shift and after each successful wave really helps you stay optimistic. This Way is also very helpful for telling people where the salmonids are spawning from, where a large pile of eggs is, or that it's low tide if they don't notice (and it's almost required during fog waves). Still wish we had stuff on left and right or even the ability to customize the pings
A "Fall back" ping would be so useful to let other teammates know when you are escaping from a losing battle. Maybe also the opposite of that one like "Going in" to communicate that you are committing to the fight. Left and right having nothing is a waste.
In my language the "Booyah!"-button is called "Cool!", and I often instinctively use it sarcastically... Like when I do something stupid, get splatted or we're getting wiped I'm like: "Cool... 😑"
Here's a list of commands that they need to add (taking references from other shooting games): *"Go! Go! Go!"* : This is to tell your teammates to leave the current point and move forward. People have a tendency to hold back when there's room to push (especially in Rainmaker). In Salmon Run people tend to hog around the shoreline, telling them to move out is helpful if they understand you're good on your own or if you want to create a chain. *"Defend Here"* : The opposite of the former. You're telling your teammates to hold their position in a designated location. It would be especially useful in Payload modes like Tower Control. *"Retreat"* : No shame in running away to recollect your composure. I know Splatoon is mostly King of the Hill, but there's enough room to retreat from a push. *"Incoming"* : It's very useful to know when the enemy is making a push. Or just letting your teammates know to get ready. *"Help"* : Salmon Run has this but it's default to when you're already dead. Only a fool prepares for the apocalypse when it already happened. Let your teammates know you're getting rushed and need assistance. *"Pass to Me"* : I think this is straightforward, tell your teammate to pass whatever they're carrying to you, either a Golden Egg or a Power Clam. *"Use Special"* : Cannot stress enough how important it is to remind people they have specials. *"Thanks"* : Booyah doesn't cut it, show a bit of appreciation to your fellows. Let them know you care. *"Nice Shot"* : Another appreciation command I think these cover everything around Splatoon. Other variants could include "Sniper Ahead", "Heavy Ahead", "We're Losing", "Keep Going", "Shame", "Follow Me". The possibilities are endless.
I like these callouts, however, I wonder how can you use them if the D-Pad has only 4 buttons. An idea would be to press the bottom button of the + and then with the right stick you can choose between a list of callouts by just moving it.
@@audacity0001 Rocket League has 12 commands from the D-Pad. When you press it once, it shows 4 commands assigned to the direction you pressed, then you press again to trigger 1 of the command. Realistically, Nintendo will never do this. But it is possible.
I always "this way" when using a newly placed Tacticooler since I find it an easy notification to miss. I probably booyah too much. My intention when there's a team wipe is to say "we can still do this!" but I hadn't considered the possibility of it being understood as sarcastic 😅
I wish the left and right D-Pad would switch you to two other sets of presets. My hopes for them would be: Left gives you more conversational things like "Thank you!", "Sorry", and "Good Job!" (Since you can only go one menu to the left, the left d-pad could be used for this) Right gives you more tactical callouts like "Help!", "Go for it!", And "I'm On It!" So if you want to ride tower and somebody else is on tower, you can get on tower and say "I'm on it!" If you see an opportunity to push in clams, you can say "Go for it!" Saying "This Way!" and "Go for it!" is a nice combination to indicate a good brand of "this way", whereas "This Way!" and "Help!" suggests a more desperate situation. As a backliner who can't always land shots, I wish I could tell my teammates sorry constantly.
I think my favorite use of This Way has to be in Clam Blitz, back in Splatoon 2. I was near the enemies' basket, and I was in a 2v1, the rest of my team was back at spawn, in a 3v2. My three teammates at spawn had a power clam, but couldn't seem to get rid of their opponents. I had 8 clams and had to splat two people just for their clams so I could open the basket. I spent the rest of my match playing defense, because I was the only one who knew how to fight, apparently. I was using This Way so my team would Super Jump the clam to me. It never worked, but at least we won
I booyah when we wipe the opposite team, but sometimes I also booyah when my team gets wiped out if we go out in a blaze of glory. I can see how it might be confusing lol
Also, in Salmon Run, there's almost a pre-round precision call system. Like, "This Way" followed immediately by Booyah indicates a low-rise Tornado Wave, while a bunch of "This Ways" meant to cling next to the basket because it's gonna be a Glowflies or Griller wave. Im sad Nintendo patched out the ability to ping players with multiple "This Way" or Help arrows in Salmon Run in the 1.2.0 patch, since it means some of the subtle "urgency" indications are lost.
If we had voice chat… dear god, I could be called slurs and everything could be hell. Everyone would be fighting and yelling. I’m actually glad we have these, they can help sometimes!
I use “This way” in rainmaker as an attempt at “hey I’ve inked a path to the checkpoint/goal; just follow me and swim” but it doesn’t always work Booya with right thumb Can’t stretch that far in handheld 😅
To add onto the start of the video, I have gotten a couple people who have a switch into the game by telling that that there was no voice chat or text chat. You'd be surprised at how quickly people will jump on a game if they know they won't have to deal with toxicity. Although invariably they'd come back to me after like 5 hours of playing and say something along the lines of "I hate the comms in this game"
Personally, I use a “claw grip” for pressing the booyah button. Middle finger on the trigger, index on the stick, and thumb on the booyah. This is because I used to play a lot of breath of the wild and this tequnique was needed to whistle sprint (sprint indefinitely) which requires left stick and dpad and a b inputs at the same time. Not a right or wrong way to do it but worth considering if anyone has trouble with the method explained
Heres my tip: Settings-> Controllers and sensors-> change button mapping. in this menu, change it so that your X button inputs as an up arrow and your Y button inputs as a down arrow. then "this way/ouch" is X and the woomy button is Y, its faster and easier than the D pad! just make sure to reprogram something else to be the x/y buttons, otherwise you wont be able to open the menu or "fresh" people!
Another thing with giving a booyah back - players who don't often won't use any input at any point, including booyah bomb. In essence, it tells everyone that you will try to communicate
I'd personally love some kind of 2-Tap system for the D-pad communication. Like the first tap on the D-pad is for choosing a category and the 2nd tap is for actually selecting and using the ping you want from that category. So if you'd press down once, you'd now have the option of 4 "Positivity" pings, like "Booyah!", "Nice Shot!", "Thanks!" or "Good Job!", for example. Pressing up could contain "Alert" pings, like "Danger!", "Help!" (which gets replaced by "Ouch!" when splatted), "Inkoming!" (Gotta have puns), etc. And the other 2 direction could have whatever else might be useful. Maybe "Status" pings, where you tell your team that you're attacking, defending, flanking or something. Now that i made this comment, i might actually make my own video on that. So thanks for the inspiration!
When I am holding the rainmaker and someone pings "This way!" I immediately trust them with my life and push with them. It actually works quite often because you get the pressure of an advancing rainmaker and a team ready to defend the carrier.
i find i use booyah the most in salmon run whenever we clear a difficult wave or the final wave. especially since salmon run can be so stressful it’s very nice having a “we’re alive!!” button to celebrate lol
When I play games with voice chat I mute anyone who’s being an ass or has a ton of background noise. More d pad options would be great but Splatoon would be better off with voice chat too
I personally can deal with voice chat in other games, like, it's not going to stop me from playing the games altogether, but I still don't enjoy having to mute someone. They're still going to say something that bothers me before they get muted, and that can sometimes last with me after that game even though I do what I can to clear my head and stay focused. I personally think having 'I know this person well enough to interact with them on Discord and form up with them intentionally instead of being randomly assigned to them in a solo queue system that doesn't show me my Glicko rating anyway' as a pre-requisite of being able to access callouts isn't a bad thing overall for the game. Competitive players who want the communication have found a way regardless, without creating unmoderated spaces with anonymous people that feel like a risk to engage with.
0:59 I've been wanting exactly "Careful" and "[Objective]" dPad pings for a long time. Those would cover the most important things that need to be communicated regularly in solo queue matches.
Overwatch is a bad game but the communication radial is actually really nice. You can tell your team if your ult(special) is ready as a heads up ("i'm about to pop my special, get ready to capitalize") you can say "group up" if someone is overextended or you want to reset, there is a "attack the objective" and my favorite, "help" which is great if the team is chasing you or you see a flanker approaching on anchor and you can't splat them. The fact that its a radial means you can say more phrases than there are buttons on a D pad, you could even have several radials bound to different D-pad directions.
Thanks for making this video. I'd taken to Ouch... pinging for as many enemies as were around me/splatted me in low level casual play. Ping 3 times if I was killed by three opponents in that area type thing. Knowing that's doing nothing because the ping only plays once is a huge help and I can refocus on using it for "there's death here."
Going off the Booyah point, a story: There was a time I was using Explosher and my Eliter teammate followed me to a sniping position. I spammed Point Sensors and they managed to pick off 2 guys with them instantly. They Booyah’ed and I did so back. This told me they appreciate the location I provided for them and encouraged me to do it more. I got 13 assists that game and they had 16 splats lol.
I’m guilty of not booyahing back because of the left thumb thing. I’ll try your technique and hopefully will become a better boohayer. BTW I really appreciate it when you talk about the mental aspect of playing the game. It’s easy to get hung up on the techniques and forget to cultivate a healthy mindset too.
I usually use this way to ask for long range support This way is also very different from language to language In japanese it's straight up "c'mon" written in katakana In german it's "to me" Which leads to a lot of confusion although the german "to me" is the clearest of the different translations
your trick about using right thumb to press the left side of the controller's Dpad is literally something I don't think anyone not playing Splatoon would think of, this opens a whole new world for me! And I'm glad as a new comer to Splatoon game, I have been using those communication correctly without anyone taught me and some further indepth use is explained thoroughly here. I would recommend this video to other players who aren't ultilizing this feature!
If we could add 2 options, I think the best 2 would be “Support Me” And “On my Way” Support me would be good for when you’re cornered or want to work on the objective in pvp or when you need help with a specific boss in salmon run. On my way being a response to Ouch, This Way, or Support Me so you know is you’re receiving backup.
I like the idea of "on my way" because it could serve as an "i just respawned", a "prepare for a super jump" hint, and an "I'm repositioning" cue. I'm having trouble seeing how "Support me" would be used differently than "this way" though. I think a "careful" / "hold up" ping would be an important addition. Sometimes someone needs a nudge to stop them from pushing into enemy territory when they shouldn't, or stop them from pushing the objective without a numbers advantage. Would also be useful to warn about incoming special attacks like a Booyah Bomb you can't see around the corner, an enemy team that's all juiced up on tacticoolers, a crab tank holding high ground, or an ink-vac that isn't safe to push on.
@@TimRomero "This way" could be when you found a good flanking spot for instance, while "support me" could be used to support backliners like chargers and splatlings.
I think it's really interesting how people find ways to communicate in a variety of contexts via such limited means. I commonly see people use "This Way!" to say "okay let's go push the objective" or to announce where they're about to place a Tacticooler so it's easier to collect. I actually really like to "Booyah!" when the coast is super clear to push the objective. It's a fun way to say "hey, we have the advantage, good job, let's go!" and seems to really catch people's attention. It feels like we're all rallying together when everyone goes "Booyah!" back as we go in. I once noticed a teammate ping "This Way!" from behind me, so I turned around just in time to splat the person they were engaged with. The 1v1 wasn't in their favour, but I was right there with no other enemies in sight, so it was a really smart call for help that felt very intuitive to respond to, just like that example you described. I'd have a hard time ever interpreting it as a warning NOT to approach. ... there was one time I was carrying the Rainmaker to the checkpoint and DIDN'T recognize that a "This Way!" ping wasn't aimed at me. I pulled back to see if I should be taking a different route and ended up getting splatted for it. When I watched the replay, one of our teammates had wandered off alone, and the "This Way!" was probably an attempt to call them back over to the group. We would have cleared the checkpoint if I'd just kept going, but I was distracted by the callout at the time. That's still my mistake, but it definitely highlights the limitations of this system.
Another thing to add with "This Way!" would be that your position greatly matters, Depending on the situation I might rush slightly ahead of my teamates to send the message as engage, Standing back and using it would suggest a retreat and if I'm staying still while others are respawning it helps convey that I'm a safe jump
I am SO glad you recommended the right thumb booyah technique. I do it for the exact same reason but I've never heard anyone else talk about it so I thought I was the only one.
I would love for the other two D-Pad buttons to be used. I already love that you can say so much with just two phrases, but there are a few things I wish I could say that I can't with those two words. Something like "watch out," and "hold" could be useful. I want to know what others think about those ones specifically. Also I wonder if adding more words would just make it overwhelming. I personally don't think so if the sounds for each phrase is distinct enough.
Honestly, they should do one of 2 things: - Add an option to replace "This Way" or "Ouch" with messages that mean the same thing, but with different connotations like, "Follow Me!", "Over Here!", "Watch Out!", Or even "I got it/this!". But you can't have all of them to balance it a bit. - Allow us to make short, moderated custom messages binded to the other 2 parts of the D-pad that you either type out, or build with key words.
I love when im playing dapples and deep into the enemy base with beacons set up and 7 clams spamming "This way" but no one fucking opens the map and jumps to me, and yes i only do this if we have a player advantage or if we are locked out and they dont have a power clam and we do. Its the most insane strat but in solo no one cares, they are too focused on tunnel vision.
My top wishlist item for Splatoon 4 (besides more flank routes) is more d-pad communication options. One normal mode with 4 to 6 options and one advanced mode with all callouts and weapon names plus some verbs like didn't, push, beware, withdraw, and a weapon-specific special verb (sliding, storming, waving). So you can say "liter on snipe" or "push right" or sliding. These become voice messages in the localized language of the player.
I appreciate in all your videos about player communication you include a bit about morale and how to not tilt people. I learned pretty early on in Final Fantasy 14 that simply saying hi to the party at the beginning of a raid can have a positive impact on player performance and how people talk to you if something goes wrong. I've carried this notion into my Splatoon play and D-pad usage
To add onto the obvious, "The unused Dpad directions should have a pings as well," thought pretty much everyone is thinking, I think it'd be very useful if the other two left and right directions also had their own Splatted pings like "Ouch.." too. Ouch is very helpful when it comes to being alerted that a nearby teammate was splatted, but it's still vague enough that I don't really know what my teammate would want me to do with that knowlege. (A lot of the time, if I see Ouch in the corner of my eye, my immediete response is to move away from where it came from, even in situations where it was probably used to tell me that I could finish off the opponent in retrospect) It could be something like having the left ping become, "Stay away!" or "They're too strong!", and the right ping become, "Finish them!" Or "Avenge me!" Maybe the examples I gave could be misinterpreted, but what I mean there would be definied, "Don't come to where I was splatted," and "Do come to where I was splatted," ping options.
As backline I tend to use "This way!" if someone is rushing me while Im on charger and need help and it works wonderfully. Thank you for these vids btw, been sending them to a bunch of friends that are new to the game!
I think the best possible extra communications would be “Danger!”, which would communicate when something bad is happening without getting splatted, and “Oops…” which would basically be used for when you make a mistake like falling off the map or waste a special.
"this way" is used a lot more in Salmon run. I only used it in turf for if I threw a tentacooler or I want another player to help me push into enemy base & I feel it's safe enough.
I agree with all of this. I'll also hide and use "This Way" to tell the person who died I'm safe to come back to, or to let people know there's a threat I don't think I can handle by myself. "Booyah" I use at the beginning as a Hi/GLHF sorta prompt, or as positive reinforcement like you said. I'm actually a bit grumpy "ouch" has a cool down. In Splatoon 1, I would press it with a short space to let my allies know how many enemies are around me. I would do a slow triple ping if there were three around me, for example.
imo “this way!” “help!” “cmon!” and “booyah!” would be a perfect four for me . this way for specific locations. help for well, help, cmon for a general lets go, like when its time to push rainmaker or smth and booyah for booyah
I’m an anchor/backline player, and I use “This way!” ping as “my position is safe to jump on” when my teammates respawn. This one works well.
I also play back line and I use this sometimes but forget to a lot
I tried implementing this use lately, it is very useful indeed ! I often see teammates booyah-ing me back when they safely land, so i assume that's something lots of anchors tend to do as well.
As a fellow backliner I am sure nobody ever jumps to you, right? They go straight to the farthest player and die immediately when they land
I fall back and give them a stealth jump
Oh I never thought of that I should do that
Really fulfilling to hear Squid School advertise the way I've been using the "Ouch..." button for a while now.
Yeah I love using Ouch plus Booyah when someone avenges me because it's both informative and makes them feel good about avenging their teammate
Splatoon 1 also had it as "c'mon"
interesting that they changed it
@@binarycat1237 i think that was only for the PAL version
I tend to use Ouch! to signal others the splatter is still nearby, Booyah! at the start and as a way of saying thank you and I haven't used This way! much, so that part of the video was most helpful for me ^^
Im glad you were able to enjoy this game :)
Hehe... Hooked.
you know mute buttons exist right? In most games you can turn voice off so everyone is muted by default
Great gameplay, but it is missing something.

these tips only work if you booyah back
By the way these tips don’t work unless you ALWAYS booyah back.
Nice shot! Nice shot! Nice shot! Nice shot! (Chat has been disabled for 30 seconds)
i really hope they add more communication options in a future update. would be such a waste not to especially considering youre playing with randoms without vc the majority of the time 😭
@@cathackzz Sadly, this is (translation changes aside) what we've been dealing with for 7 years - If they were going to improve the coms system, even just additional d-pad options, it feels like they'd have done it going into a new game rather than as an update, especially since the huge leaps forward to non-verbal communications, IIRC, in came via 2019 with Apex's Legends' ping system that's been adopted by a bunch of other games since... And not Splatoon.
Stuff like this make me sad to no end... I'd really like to hear the devs try to justify it without saying that they're just lazy
also an important thing to mention: sometimes a teammate can accidentally booyah if they’re attempting to super jump back to spawn, since that also uses down on the D-pad. Especially if it’s in rapid succession it might be a panic ping rather than on purpose!
This was actually something I had in mind to talk about and forgot to get into the script by the time I was actually around to writing the booyah section. Thanks for pointing it out! I made a short about this.
This happens way too often when I’m panic jumping back to spawn. Mess up your inputs just a bit and now you’re booyahing your own death
It wasn't mentioned, but when someone is This Waying in Clam Blitz while holding lots of clams, please give them your clams so they can make a power clam.
Pfp (Profile Picture) and / or Banner Sauce (Source [Artist])? 🗿
I find that "this way" really only works well in salmon run, especially during low tides or at the start of a round. I literally never use it in any other game mode because of how ambiguous it is lol
Yeah it’s pretty good in salmon run. I’ll use it when high tide is starting when I see a player at risk of ending up in the water
@@elefox5802 that's good too, so many times where I've accidentally jumped in water haha
“This way” is definitely only reserved for SR for me
When i die the "ouch" ping is basically a reflex now, followed by opening the map.
As an uspoken rule: If your teammates booyah you up, you lose your right to blame or get tilted at them
The woomy button is the most important button in the game and you know it.
There's a woomy button??
@@PhantomOfficial07 They mean the Booyah button
Me when I keep realising I can't throw clams while using any special (like zipcaster) and keep forgetting it
@@harmless9336 Ah, I see the Russian Dota strategy lives on
I got into the habit of using ouch whenever I die with an enemy nearby, as a warning.
S rank too and besides the booyah at the start no one uses the d pad with me too
i use joycons and when i was super dedicated to hydra in soloq, i remapped my controls so that i could booyah by pressing the left stick. i like it because i can booyah at basically any time now, i can spam it pretty quickly for booyah bomb but i'll still be ready to get moving again, and panic jump-outs are faster.
I use the Booyah! in Salmon Run in a few different ways:
The first use is the obvious start of wave, end of wave, and end of game booyah. So satisfying when they all booyah back, too.
I also use it when quota is met, glad to know I'm not alone on that.
My final usage of it is probably limited to just me. Whenever there's a special occurance, I booyah twice in quick succession before the wave starts, to let my teammates know.
@@1snivy10 The egg added audio cue also changes when you meet quota
I often use "This Way!" when a teammate is trying to cover every single square inch of the base, especially when respawning and swimming past them for the 2nd or 3rd time. It pretty much never works, but I'd like to think at least one time it'll get the point across...
Turf War be like that
@@Sickmmaner it happens at high ranks too - some people are missiles carried and eat up all the valuable home base ink before half the points are on the board. Makes it frustrating even into S+ 3 where I am. If we're losing bad later, we want that easy to access turf to get a booyah bomb or, indeed, some missiles.
@@dylantoney6971 Ah yes, the Reef-lux mains as well. Luckily I haven't had to deal with many of them
It's a good idea at least!
@@theskull1030 I love what they come up with for each language x)
I love how creative other languages are with "booyah!", in German it's just "Cool!" and I feel like there's missed potential. Really interesting that there are some differences in the meanings though!
In italian for booyah we have "Grande!" which takes the "Great!" meaning. In italian, the booyah bomb is called "Granbotto (gran botto)" which translates to "Great Boom" or "Big Boom" (grande can also mean big).
Also, "This way!" in italian gets translated to "Con me!" which means "With me!" "Follow me!" "Come with me!" So I wouldn't use it to warn about danger

There's something to be said about game design in this front cause I never read anything about how the community uses booyah, this way and ouch and yet I've been using these exactly as described in the video ever since Splatoon 1
Anyways, great video as always!
Do you see the ping on the map?
My teammates who refuse to check where I said ouch: "Y'all hear summin'?"

@@Riodile isn’t booyah kind of like “thanks”
@@TaxeAndStuff to be fair, it is. I usually use it to say "Thanks!" myself
I also do this! Def easier for charging booyah bombs and team morale in general
It's just so nice to be able to move around and press booyah at the same time
I feel like they can keep this way and booyah but utilize left and right for mode specific commands like telling someone “On the Tower!” or “Give clams” or even a regroup command to keep everyone from going one by one into the slaughter house.
i personally think they should split "This Way" into "Follow Me" and "Watch Out" and use the remaining d-pad part for mode-specific callouts depending on the mode
a tip I got from watching chuggaaconroy's splatoon 2 playthrough is mapping booyah! to L on the controller. actually works really well!
The brush had to have wanted someone to super jump and flank with him, but it's still frustrating that he didn't atlest try to help by himself.
8:41 I love how "Griefing" is an explicit option to report someone
VOICE. ON."
When Splatoon dropped, gaming culture was, like, peak toxic.
Either they should make a new system or one simple solution could be adding left and right arrow icons that swap to 2 more communications, maybe "Charge!" and "Retreat!".
they already had to translate an entire game, a few more words wouldn't hurt lol
I guess what I wrote is more so why they cannot just add 2 more comms and be done.
i usually "Ouch" twice when someones on me, "Booyah" in various situations, and "This Way!" when i want them to jump on me and/or follow the point
4:10 in italian the this way button is translated to “with me!” Which could have been much clearer
00:20 Thank you for saying this I appreciate you calling attention to that
We definitely need those other two D-pad buttons to be used.
Up: this way
Down: booyah
Left: need help
Right: push forward
In my language the "Booyah!"-button is called "Cool!", and I often instinctively use it sarcastically... Like when I do something stupid, get splatted or we're getting wiped I'm like: "Cool... 😑"
You know he's on a different league when he starts showing you weird hand maneuvers to booyah without losing .5 seconds of movement
Here's a list of commands that they need to add (taking references from other shooting games):
*"Go!
*"Nice Shot"* : Another appreciation command
I think these cover everything around Splatoon. Other variants could include "Sniper Ahead", "Heavy Ahead", "We're Losing", "Keep Going", "Shame", "Follow Me". The possibilities are endless.
This reminded me of Counter Strike for some reason 😅 “Team fall back!”
You forgot the most important use of Booyah: "Disregard that This Way!/Ouch"
Do people generally interpret it that way?
The real reason there is only two D-pad messages is probably because the d-pad on most controllers is messed up and it would send the wrong message 🤷
cant imagine nintendo ever acknowledging a fault in their hardware ngl
This 100%. There’s only two options and I still struggle to remember which is which (though I’m sure with some effort I could get there.)
I wish the left and right D-Pad would switch you to two other sets of presets. My hopes for them would be:
Left gives you more conversational things like "Thank you!", "Sorry", and "Good Job!" (Since you can only go one menu to the left, the left d-pad could be used for this)
Right gives you more tactical callouts like "Help!", "Go for it!", And "I'm On It!"
So if you want to ride tower and somebody else is on tower, you can get on tower and say "I'm on it!"
If you see an opportunity to push in clams, you can say "Go for it!"
Saying "This Way!" and "Go for it!" is a nice combination to indicate a good brand of "this way", whereas "This Way!" and "Help!" suggests a more desperate situation.
I’m actually glad we have these, they can help sometimes!
i wish they had a "watch out!" button sometimes
If I'm not trying to help powering someone's booyah bomb, I use booyah as a way to say thank you when a team mate splats the person that splatted me.
I use “This way” in rainmaker as an attempt at “hey I’ve inked a path to the checkpoint/goal; just follow me and swim” but it doesn’t always work
Booya with right thumb
Can’t stretch that far in handheld 😅
To add onto the start of the video, I have gotten a couple people who have a switch into the game by telling that that there was no voice chat or text chat. You'd be surprised at how quickly people will jump on a game if they know they won't have to deal with toxicity. Although invariably they'd come back to me after like 5 hours of playing and say something along the lines of "I hate the comms in this game"
I remember seeing a concept somewhere that had an "AAAAAAAAAAAAH" button
Personally, I use a “claw grip” for pressing the booyah button. Middle finger on the trigger, index on the stick, and thumb on the booyah. This is because I used to play a lot of breath of the wild and this tequnique was needed to whistle sprint (sprint indefinitely) which requires left stick and dpad and a b inputs at the same time. Not a right or wrong way to do it but worth considering if anyone has trouble with the method explained
@AntiChou just my thing. everyone's different. find what works for you
Heres my tip:
Settings-> Controllers and sensors-> change button mapping.
in this menu, change it so that your X button inputs as an up arrow and your Y button inputs as a down arrow. then "this way/ouch" is X and the woomy button is Y, its faster and easier than the D pad! just make sure to reprogram something else to be the x/y buttons, otherwise you wont be able to open the menu or "fresh" people!
ive noticed salmon run players like to booyah a lot at the end of really tough waves its refreshing and fun :3
Good salmon run coworkers are a blessing
The way I've found myself using This Way! the most is to try and get someone more appropriate to stand on the tower, especially if I have inkjet up
Thanks for making this video.
Going off the Booyah point, a story:
There was a time I was using Explosher and my Eliter teammate followed me to a sniping position. I spammed Point Sensors and they managed to pick off 2 guys with them instantly. They Booyah’ed and I did so back. This told me they appreciate the location I provided for them and encouraged me to do it more. I got 13 assists that game and they had 16 splats lol.
10:00 i use a pro con where there’s extra buttons on the bottom of the handles and i’ve mapped them to this way and booyah
I’ve always wanted a “Sorry!”, lol.
My favorite way to use booyah is when we get a wipeout. The whole team booyahs in beautiful unison
I usually use this way to ask for long range support
This way is also very different from language to language
In japanese it's straight up "c'mon" written in katakana
In german it's "to me"
Which leads to a lot of confusion although the german "to me" is the clearest of the different translations
your trick about using right thumb to press the left side of the controller's Dpad is literally something I don't think anyone not playing Splatoon would think of, this opens a whole new world for me!
And I'm glad as a new comer to Splatoon game, I have been using those communication correctly without anyone taught me and some further indepth use is explained thoroughly here. I would recommend this video to other players who aren't ultilizing this feature!
If we could add 2 options, I think the best 2 would be
“Support Me” And “On my Way”
Support me would be good for when you’re cornered or want to work on the objective in pvp or when you need help with a specific boss in salmon run.
I joked that you should "booyah back for up to 20% morale bonus" and you made it real
Honestly, they should do one of 2 things:
- Add an option to replace "This Way" or "Ouch" with messages that mean the same thing, but with different connotations like, "Follow Me!", "Over Here!", "Watch Out!", Or even "I got it/this!".
The ambiguity of "This way!" could be solved with a "Look out!" ping.
i like playing support for rainmaker. i use this way pings to let the driver know he's got someone watching his back
To add onto the obvious, "The unused Dpad directions should have a pings as well," thought pretty much everyone is thinking, I think it'd be very useful if the other two left and right directions also had their own Splatted pings like "Ouch.." too.
Ouch is very helpful when it comes to being alerted that a nearby teammate was splatted, but it's still vague enough that I don't really know what my teammate would want me to do with that knowlege. (A lot of the time, if I see Ouch in the corner of my eye, my immediete response is to move away from where it came from, even in situations where it was probably used to tell me that I could finish off the opponent in retrospect) It could be something like having the left ping become, "Stay away!" or "They're too strong!", and the right ping become, "Finish them!" Or "Avenge me!"
Maybe the examples I gave could be misinterpreted, but what I mean there would be definied, "Don't come to where I was splatted," and "Do come to where I was splatted," ping options.
In Salmon Run, the D-Pad up also has the "Help!" ping.
I primarily use “This Way” when we’re 30 seconds into a match and I’m the only person on my team that has even made it to the middle of the map
I'm going to need a longer thumb, I play exclusively on handheld. The delay on all my TVs in the house is like 1/2 second.
Me: splatted spamming ouch
Teammate: still clueless and about to die to a roller flanking
I want the right D-pad button to activate your emote lol
