for some extra context on the manga, for both gem himself and anyone else who reads this:
    1. the manga has been going on longer than splatoon has been OUT. chapter 0 came out before the game did
    2. it is written and drawn solely by one woman: sankichi hinodeya. not "artists" or "writers"- just hinodeya.
    3. the splatoon dev team has had input on the manga on multiple occasions, have provided concept art and even entire character designs to it. theres also official stuff like marinas manga thats published in with the manga.
    4. its published initially in corocoro. meaning its aimed at 7 year old japanese boys. you see the fun thing about being a "family friendly" franchise means some of the content for it wont be directed at us adults, and thats ok! let the kids have their stuff too.
    5. the teams are created for.. promo reasons, not to be accurate or good. new characters are given the newest weapons and gear. a lot of them are promotional characters taken straight from trailers.
    6. not everything is actually.. possible in game. unfortunately, as a ballpoint main, i've yet to figure out how to use vintages x-zone. i'll get there someday
the manga was never made to be an accurate portrayal of the game. its a comedy shonen for little boys, supposed to look flashy and sell the game, or parts of it (like weapons). if theres enough of an outcry for a serious splatoon manga, you Could get one, but this was something nintendo wanted to advertise their game with and given it sells amazingly in japan, they dont have much reason to make another manga...

splatoon 1 inkstrike was good in turf war. not for any APPROPRIATE reason, but if you fired it off in to the enemy base right as the level timer ended, it would paint a huge area after the players stopped moving but before the inked area was tallied. this means that you could get a few percentage points per person every round, for free, and there's literally nothing the other team can do about it.

Back in s2 i would join splatfest groups where we all picked a splat manga character to cosplay as, and used their signature outfit/weapon/username and it was fun to try out weapons based not on meta or familiarity but how much we liked the character we were pretending to be lol.

Near the end of the Splatoon 2 era the manga does go into other aspects: it covers Octo Expansion; Googles, Rider, and two others get accidentally dragged into a Salmon Run shift; we get a whole arc on Sheldon looking for the Legendary Weapons from the great war. But mostly it's just silly shenanigans.
There is a good scene from end of Splatoon 1 era where Headphones is worried her Squiffer sniping abilities are holding her back and she talks about this with an S+ ranked E-liter (I think from Rider's team). The E-liter player chose scoped e-liter because her team comp allows her to snipe from very far away, very safely, and support her team in that matter. She then points out that a squiffer on Team Blue is great because Headphones needs far more situational awareness due to her team being kind of all over the place and being scoped in can prevent her from seeing where her team needs her. It was a neat exploration of how weapons in the same class might function better/worse based on what the rest of the team is also doing, even if it was only like 3 pages long.

I really do have to wonder how much better the manga would have been if it started after Octo-Expansion came out, using the agents as the main charecters and expanding on the story modes of 1 and 2 while also seeing how the characters improve at Turf due to lessons learned during their fights with the octarians.

I can't make any claims that I'm too sure of because I don't know that much about Japan, but I believe nudity in Japan is in fact commonly seen as an extension of innocence, of immaturity on some level but on an endearing level, if that makes any sense? It sounds weird when I say it that way but it's the best way to describe it I have from trying to learn about Japanese culture from elsewhere. So it makes sense that nudity jokes would be more "in their element" in Japan than they would be for western readers.

Both would preferrably be in the classic splatoon 2D style, obviously stylized a bit less for easier animation, but I know for a fact it'd be weird "high definition" 3D models instead of normal inkling models.

Besides that the lack of character development or formulaic premises are reflective of the promotional nature of these mangas, they weren't meant to expand on the universe of splatoon but re-tell splatoon in a different context/parallel universe.

To let myself ramble, I personally like to headcannon Army as an Octoling who started off undercover. Which explains why he's military based (especially as a drill sergeant).
We never see him without his beret, which means we never see his "hair." I'm not sure where, but I remember reading somewhere that Inklings can only tell the difference from Octolings by thier tentacles and eyes (might've been in the Octo Expansion by Captain Cuttlefish).
Army also knows how makeup works, it's stated in the manga that he applies his own face paint. All he would have to do is draw a face mask on and he'd look like an Inkling!
Then there's the the clothes he wears. The parka has a purple octoling on it, in the same shape as Justice (Vol.13), who *is* an Octoling.
And In the Chaos V. Order splatfest, Army chooses Order and tells Hivemind that he, "Can not accept a world without free will." And wouldn't you know it, that sounds like somthing Octoling underground would have experienced with Tartar down there and sanitizing Octolings.
Onto Army's parents, it's stated from the manga that he comes from rich parents. We're never told where that wealth came from, but I imagine his parents must've been important Octoling generals who get paid greatly for thier service.
So my idea is: His parents left the underground with him when he was young. With the money they earned from thier service, Army was able to live an upper class lifestyle, but still held onto admiration of the military (either by the propaganda spread there, or from his parents being generals). His parents wanted him to experience a life they couldn't have, and started disguising him as an Inkling, saying that he should NEVER reveal he's an Octoling to others, knowing Octolings are discriminated against (taking place during Splatoon 1 where Octolings weren't playable). Army grows up and finally realizes how awful the underground really was. He also grows up with the fear of being discovered as an Octoling.
If he ever where to be discovered, it would be around the start of Vol.3, where they all head to Inkopolis Square and Army sees Marina, an Octoling who's freely walking around and no one really cares. His beret would fall off during the S4's battle with Emperor, and he'd run off in a panic thinking the rest of the S4 members will hate him. They find him and tell him it's alright, that he is still Army, the same strategist, the same person who keeps them in working order, and the only one who really knows how to cook, and that him being an Octoling means nothing.
I just love all these characters so much! They have so much potential for readers and writers to imagine them differently. And thanks for reading all of this if you did ❤
(P.s. Yes, almost every character has an in depth look into thier past. Just ask me about Emperor, I dare you)

That first match, for instance, is followed up with a loss mentioned in passing, resulting in them loosing that tournament. The last team they fought in the S1 ark soundly beat them, and then they go through training to come out on top in a rematch. Most of the time though, yeah Team Blue just wins.

My headcanon is that the reason that Team Blue is so low ranked yet can beat some of the higher ranked teams is because they primarily play Turf War together. Actual ranked battles, not the modes played in them, are typically done solo, where they wouldn't play together. They do terribly if they don't play with anyone they know.

    • @redi.c.e.6046

I meeeeaaaan, while there’s a little leap in logic: why would any of the s+’ers be just playin turf if they’re rank players? Makes it seem like ranks just work differently in this universe…
Whilst that’s all a thing… this still makes the most sense to me: rider notes right to goggles that he believes goggles “might actually be stronger than an S4”, and blue’s results would suggest, even against emperor, their skills are actually above the rest. people might not like it, but it’s clearly so, due to them practising so hard together before chapter one, and all their experience built up from the first few battles.
In fact, eight/hachi asks how they can be bad ranked when their so strong, and the response is they’re ridiculous, which would explain it if they were playing solo, again reinforcing your point.
TLDR your theory simply works from every angle. Probably coulda just said that, but I love team blue so I just wanted to do it.

Personally, if you know what to expect, I think it’s a blast to read the manga. You’re in for some stupid giggles, a nice lighthearted angle of splatoon to kill time with. It’s fun to see a different portrayal of a game that’s set up in a way everyone can adlib in the blanks to have their own concept of how the splatoon world works.
Edit: Watching the tail end of the video, I do also strongly dislike that team blue has never lost a meaningful game. They do mention how they practice often, which could (somewhat) justify them winning against the quad S+ team at the start, but by no means should there be no character development. No structure to the story, but yet again, if there’s only the expectation of a gag series, it’s amazing.

Absolutely perfectly said points about this manga! I find it really fascinating the whole separate area of the fanbase around Splatoon it’s gathered, especially after being out for so much time. I initially couldn’t play Splatoon 1 until late into its lifespan, and this manga definitely contributed to my desire to play and actively engage in the community at first. It does it’s job well marketing the game, which seems like it’s primary reason for existing. Well into my years as a comp player I continued to read it. Your point about the reader being able to insert themselves into the characters in game is so important, because the corika fanbase is well known for cosplaying the characters in game, a favorite pastime of the manga fans. I do think that the Splatoon 2 era of the manga has more desirable writing in regards to how the game itself feels to play and functions (at least, in my memory). Eventually Blue Team plays in ranked tournaments instead of turf war, where they learn valuable lessons about how to really play the game, and eventually against X players regarded as tough and too serious. The formula still for the most part, doesn’t change at all though lol. The corika manga honestly is interesting to analyze from a community perspective the most. Regardless, would absolutely LOVE to see how you discuss the team comps present in the manga, as I’ve definitely read the manga and judged heavily how a match realistically would’ve gone. Especially the aforementioned X team being the “best” and running what they were running. Great video!

I only read the first 3 manga before i was like "okay i am not the target audience, and thats ok" so a few things:
    - the fact that they highlight their ranks makes zero sense, as for the first half of S1's shelf life *there was no comp*. only turf war! yippee!! we had NO idea what different modes were even going to feel like, other than a relief from the monotony of turf, where it was VERY hard to break a spawn camp and modders were EVERYWHERE. i mean modders still are everywhere, they just held a legit s1 splatfest, i digress. the game against that quad s+ was a *match of turf war*. which, frankly, is it not the true s3 experience to lose the lead in the last 30 seconds of turf?
-S1 inkstrike was INSANE. my friends and I joke that one of the challenges for S3 should be we get S1 kits/hitboxes and let chaos ensue. inkstrike was about the size of a booyah bomb, but it was collumn that struck into the sky, not a sphere, and launched instantly on *any* part of the map, thanks to it always being visible on the wiiu gamepad and was tap-to-lauch *on there*. (S1 Killer wail was a similar kind of pain, but imagine that roar attack Grizz does in the final boss except in the hands of players and in the Hallway maps of S3) In S1 maps where the mass verticality could make or break you based on the special? if that was quad inkstrike done at a coordinated time? your team is dead and the other other just bought themselves 5 to 10 seconds.

I’m afraid that in the same way Disney making Toy Story 4 was enough to finally trigger Matpat, you, taking such a stance on the manga, have summoned MY wrath. (this is a joke-y tone by the way 😉)
Having listened to all your points and it going… about the exact way I would’ve expected, I’ve decided I’ll be putting my own video essay together, wherein I’ll defend the manga like there’s no tomorrow, explaining what about it makes me (as someone approaching my 20s) love it, and addressing some of your gripes and giving my reasoning towards them.
To clarify: all of this, not because any of your statements on the game aspects are wrong… because they’re not, they’re all factually correct, but in case it’s not obvious, the main premise of my defence will be ‘loving it for what it is, not for what you were looking for’, so yah.
But most importantly, I plan to be as respectful as possible, as I greatly appreciate how you were here, and I hope everyone knows I completely understand anyone for not liking the manga, believe me I get it. This is just something I as a fan of it wanna do from my passion for it, and I now finally have a motivation to.
Outside of that, this was a very well thought out analysis that in all seriousness, I think everyone looking to improve at the game should still watch. I just gotta get my side of the story across.
Disclaimer, if ya come back in a year and still nothing on my channel, it’s cuz I just mean I’ve decided I wanna go ahead with the idea, not gonna stress myself to rush ahead.

its really useful to have first hand experience in their weaknesses and strengths.
you'll learn how to fight a specific weapon through the ppl that splat you, noting their approaches and applying it to your own strategy. you'll also see what benefit the weapon, so you know which situations to prevent / avoid etc.
i guess this can also be achieved by playing against the weapon a lot, paying attention to how you get splatted / how you splat them,

Splatoon has enough style and lore to it, more lore than most other Nintendo series at this point minus Zelda and maybe Kirby, that there really shouldn't be much issue with the manga. Everything you need for a good manga (especially one that's gone as long as the Splatoon manga has) is already in the games, and as long as you get decent writers it should be a slam dunk. It seems like there's a healthy spread of opinions on the manga which is great, but it's still a bit disappointing that it doesn't take advantage of those great aspects of Splatoon's world. Honestly, with how Nintendo seems to be going strong with movies now after the success of the Mario movie, I think a Splatoon anime would work REALLY well. It'd capture the fantastic style of Splatoon's world without issue, and as long as there are solid writers who are actually able to take advantage of the series' wealth of lore and plot, I think a Splatoon anime would be thoroughly enjoyable.

The manga and anime industry as a whole has a huge issue with treating actions like exposing people without their constant or trying to peep on them while they’re changing as a joke and then when the characters react accordingly to being violated it’s framed as irrational or something that can just be brushed off and forgotten about. I really don’t get it. It ruined anime and manga for me as kid and as an adult I’m very selective with what I consume but even in the most serious narratives it can be there. It’s really disappointing

As much as a like coroika… yeaa this manga is hard to defend. I’m extremely critical about it, my friends and I joke about not wanting it to be the source material for a potential Splatoon anime. I just wish they would flesh out characters more and give them *actual* personalities outside of 2 or 3 bullet points. They need to take advantage of the splatoon world more fr, it’ll make it much better

Do not overthink, is a manga for kids with some adult humor sometimes, but it’s cartoonish, it’s fun, it’s interesting, I know they don’t touch things deep like the Octo Expansion or the Great War or why there is a some kind of racial conflict or even a evil elaborated villain, the manga is what Hinodera said “ITS JUST A PARODY” obviously NOTHING gonna be seriously here, maybe some things cannot be 100% accurate (like fighting naked is the best way to fight) but at least, the manga make you have a good time with some broken goofy humor, and that, makes it a good manga.

Unrelated to the content of the video, but I'm studying to be a teacher myself and it's really fun when I can see your background in education come out in your videos. "Higher level thinking" is an academic term and it made me smile to know that our knowledge can be applied to education as well as becoming better at video games :^)

I remember trying splatoon 1 back when it came out, it gave me motion sickness a few times and I pretty much gave up on it. Fast forward to like 2018 and I kept seeing the manga in both my local bookstore and library. It got me curious enough that I did read them. It was very much fast paced and childish but it got me wanting to try again with the series. Here I am now still consistently playing the third game for fun, no more motion sickness lol.

Ok, so I agree wit the statement, and it makes sense, but would like to recommend reading the ranked matches(specifically the finals) as some of the things there actually make sense of what plays they are doing. but yeah the battles are pretty formulatic exceptions of a few, but this is mostly due to how they want the series to run and they originally had times when they won purely by chance but when versing skull they lost and had too learn(a technique goggles uses In the series later as well), but having 3 chapters worth of one match and a schedule to go with is hard to keep a viewers attention (kids these days). but altogether analysing the best bits is something you should look into. (Can't wait for the next video gem!)

They do enter a ranked tournament during the Splatoon 2 era, but IIRC they only show one game of each mode.
They do a decent job of explaining each mode in like 4 panels, though.
