    One thing I neglected to mention was the Octo Samurai boss from Splatoon 2. It’s a bit of an oddity among the Octarians, appearing mostly like a severed-tentacle Octarian but with a humanoid body. Notably, we actually DO see its soul upon splatting it and we even see it respawn using a spawn point. This is further evidence that all Octarians have souls, but it still isn’t clear why only the Samurai and Octolings can respawn (thanks to UndeadButStillHasAHead for bringing this to my attention!)

    22:36 I have my own theory on this as well: the octarians were simply the easiest to convince. All it would take would be the promise of the surface and I’m sure the vast majority of octarians would at least be intrigued enough to give the whole deal a chance, by which point it would already be too late to back out.

      I also agree! I would also think that the Octarians are… more easily accessible (?) than the inklings, because after fleeing the army, a lot of them might end up underground in the Deepsea Metro… maybe? Inklings would probably have no reason to end up down there. Since Octolings have lived underground their whole lives, they would want to see the surface like you said. Or maybe Kamabo Co captures octarians that have escaped from the army, because it says, in the Octo expansion opening “An Octopus, unaware that dawn will bring capture, Rests within a trap” Maybe Kamabo Co set up traps to capture octarians?

      @@aiko_theOcto I really doubt that line is referring to literal traps, and instead is moreso referencing that fact that Agent 8 (and likely most of the other octarians) were bound to end up in the deep sea metro and manipulated by Kamabo Co. So Agent 3 in the campaign of 1 and agent 4 in 2 both can use multiple specials, but the energy needed for them are provided by the powerup drops. Not to mention, Pearl uses Killer Wail without a weapon, and by Splatoon 2's standards of that no longer being an available super, Pearl shouldnt have had access to it based on what supers are available in what kits. This means supers are only part of kits in the gameplay, not the lore. Limiter has to be a device or implant distributed to Turf war players.
    Also, this part I may be mistaken: Agent 3's boss fight doesnt use any special that requires an external device meaning the power behind the super is tied to the inkling, but some supers could require tools instead. Inkzooka, tenta missles, wail, crab tank, etc

    • @TheCosmicCloud
      @TheCosmicCloud  3 месяца назад

      What little lore we have about specials does seem to suggest that they are more energy-based than the regular weapons inklings use. We just know so little that I didn’t want to make any assumptions. The phrase“removing the limiter” sounds more like something you would do to a physical object than a description of surpassing one’s emotional limits, but it’s simply never explained.
      I personally think that painting the ground to charge a special is purely a gameplay mechanic, and that in canon Inklings just have to “build power” somehow in order to use them (which can be done artificially with the help of canned specials). If I recall correctly, the Japanese version of Octo Expansion actually explains that Pearl can rapidly dance around to charge up her Princess Cannon, which you can see her doing in the helicopter during the NILS Statue fight. (I would like to link you a source but to my knowledge there is not a text dump of any Splat game and I can’t read Japanese. Fact check this if you want.)
      Knowing that, the limiter almost sounds like some kind of power inhibitor the inklings themselves wear, which would be very funny and very anime, but it’s just a guess.
      To your last point, regular Agent 3 uses Splashdown, Baller, and Stingray, while Inner Agent 3 uses Splashdown, Inkjet, Bubble Blower, and Tenta Missiles, so… take that as you will

    21:37 alright before I continue watching, here’s my theory.
    By sanitizing the subject before the tests, Kamobo Co removes outside variables. No memories means no outside information can help any test subjects; they bring to each test only what they themselves can understand and do. Only their own inferences and conclusions can be drawn from each test, rather than basing it off of whatever they might’ve known prior to becoming a test subject. Maybe that’s why memcakes are the reward for each test; the memories contained within a given memcake will no longer be relevant in future tests, so it’s used as a reward and therefore an incentive for the subject to press onward.

    • @elcirufe8030

      @@Kruppuchino That idea fits with the battle's theme as well. Since we know that music is massively important to Splatoon's storytelling, Splattack (Octo) being a corrupted version of the first game's theme could represent Agent 3's memories being controlled and warped by Tartar's influence, but he has a very loose grip that seems to cut in and out like a faulty wireless connection. The short cut-ins of DJ Octavio's themes could imply that Tartar actually manages to gain full control for a moment each at most, only to immediately lose it seeing as the melody of Splattack plays near unbroken afterwards.
      Maybe it could even mean Agent 3 wasn't taking the fight as seriously as possible, even while brainwashed, or else a boss theme from their memories would have played instead.

    I have to say that as sad as it is, I really like the detail that while order is in control, memories are being lost forever. In game there’s no consequences to taking a long time but every moment eight delays is a moment in time someone doesn’t get back. I also like that no matter how fast you go, you can’t prevent something from being lost. It feels more realistic. A great battle was fought and won but there were prices. Our heroes struggled and couldn’t save it all.
    I also like that what was lost were memories. Real people loose memories all the time. Depending on the memory it can be completely unnoticeable or absolutely devastating. Like an arm or a leg (for us humans at least) you can never get them back exactly the way they were, but we can make new ones that are also precious.

    i've personally always thought that agent 3's "sanitization" was different than the usual process
    rather than the whole ripping out and replacing memories thing, tartar just pumped the unconscious agent with enough of the blended ooze to "overwrite" or "drown out" their will, to the point that it was literally oozing out of their head
    and the reason that agent 3 goes down in the end is because the supply tartar pumped into them had run dry after all the specials, shooting, dodgerolls, and reviving after a splat
    maybe even a bit of fighting from within after said splat briefly woke up 3's little ghost and gave it a moment without the blended ink but that's just headcanon brain having fun

    I’m fairly confident that the sanitization process, specifically the role of the blended ink, is different than how you’ve theorized here. Here’s my best guess of the process:
    First, the subject’s memories are removed to create mem cakes. This step either does not require blended ink, or uses a watered-down version (possibly evidenced by the translucence and presence of bubbles in the fluid Eight first appears in. Ink is rater opaque, and thick enough that air bubbles would have a significantly harder time moving through it compared to how it’s portrayed, but a solution of the ink and other chemicals may have similar attributes).
    Next, the subjects are injected with “dummy information.” I believe this information is contained within the ink, and can be injected in two ways: Total submersion for an extended period of time (as in the Belly Phase), or direct injection into the target (likely what the IV bags are for). I suspect the second option was the first one devised, as it likely requires less ink, which would have been in short supply at the outset, and the first method was later developed to increase mass production capacity.
    I believe that Eight went through only the first process, and Agent 3 only went through the second. Eight’s memories were removed, but they did not become subservient to Tartar and retained their original skin tone. Three likely was given an injection of blended ink, then had a small amount of it attached to them. Three retained their memories after they were removed from Tartar’s control, but lost control of themselves and began showing signs of physical changes, which likely would have become more pronounced had the contact been extended.
    A lot of this is speculation, but I think it answers a few more questions about the process and closes a few holes. Though if anyone has any counterpoints I’d be interested to read them.

    • @TheCosmicCloud
      @TheCosmicCloud  3 месяца назад +42

      You make a good point that the substance we see Eight submerged in doesn't really look like ink, but I drew that connection because we know Eight was Sanitized and we know Sanitization involves being covered in ink.
      Despite appearances, I can't think of why the Belly Phase would use a different process than whatever happened to Eight. It seems needlessly complicated to me (from a worldbuilding/ lore perspective) to have subjects submerged in some kind of chemical mixture AND blended ink. It also seems odd to me that there would be 2 different ways to implant dummy information.
      I see Agent 3 as an exception. The blended ink was used to "hijack" their brain almost like a parasite. It wasn't a true takeover of their body, as they were still alive. I don't think anyone else was Sanitized this way.
      Obviously we won't have a perfect explanation until Nintendo gives us one, but I feel more comfortable using the information we have been told in interviews/ the Dev Diaries and applying that to what we see in the game rather than using environmental details and working backwards. Marina specifically describing injection as the step AFTER Sanitization is what gives me confidence in my own understanding. There are some things that don't quite add up, but that's just how it is with Nintendo sometimes unfortunately
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though! It's very interesting to hear everyone's interpretations

    Excellent video!!!
    A few years back I wanted to make a video trying to explain sanitization, but it ended up being too daunting of a topic with too much unclear information and it got set aside.... and I'm glad I didn't get around to it, because some of the conclusions I came to about sanitization in that draft were proven *very* wrong in Side Order. (As you already know cosmic, when you asked me about the topic of sanitization a few months back) I wanted to revisit the topic with the new info from Side Order. But I've had too much on my plate and didn't very far.
    Anyways, the Splatoon community REALLY needed a video like this, and I think you blew this topic out of the water! Very cohesive and well put together. I like the "speculation" and "canon" disclaimers being on screen, I don't know how many times I've come across someone misremembering something I said was speculation in a video and then spread it around as fact. I might have to do that too.
    Also, I don't know if I would've thought to readdress the "partial sanitization" misconception, but I'm really glad you did, didn't realize how widespread it still was 😔
    I think one thing that would've been worth addressing is....In the fifth diary entry, Marina mentions that Cuttlefish has mem cakes too...? Did Kamabo seriously take some of his memories and we just didn't know about it until now? Does Cuttlefish's sheer willpower and him probably being too old to be fit to be a test subject have anything to do with how he seems... normal? Was it that when he was invited into the blender alongside 8, that was Tartar deeming him worthy to be part of his primordial ooze? IDK, I've seen a lot of confusion about this piece of info and I don't have an answer for it either, but it would be interesting to see your take on it.
    anyway again, 888/10 video, and thanks for being thorough with the credits! I'm gonna recommend others to watch this.

    • @TheCosmicCloud
      @TheCosmicCloud  3 месяца назад +36

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! There's definitely a lot of stuff that's only half explained by Nintendo and it was difficult to put it all together in a way that felt comprehensible. Glad to see speculation and other takes in the comments because there are still plenty of things with no true answer. I mostly just wanted to provide a point of reference with all the facts we know for sure so that people weren't making theories and headcanons based on outdated or incorrect information. Hopefully I was able to achieve that!
      I'll be honest, I have no idea what to make of Cuttlefish having Mem Cakes. We barely even know how Eight was Sanitized. Based on my own understanding, it's possible that his memories were extracted by Kamabo, but then... why didn't he have amnesia? How did he get his mem cakes back? I have literally zero clue, and if I did address it in the video, it would just be me saying I have zero clue lmao
      Is it possible that Marina just meant she got Eight's Mem Cakes from "Eight and Cuttlefish" meaning they were both holding on to Eight's? I'm not sure how it reads in the Japanese version, but that would be a simpler explanation. I'm guessing that isn't the case if you're asking though lol
      It is interesting that Tartar doesn't stop Cuttlefish from entering the blender despite him not collecting the four Thangs, but there are other signs of Tartar's plan being imperfect. For example, we can see an Octoball floating around in the NILS Statue weapon, which would seem to imply that an Octoball managed to assemble the blender? Or somehow managed to fall in to the primordial ooze without getting blended? It's weird. It's almost like Tartar doesn't even perceive the people "beneath" it. But also it does sometimes
      tldr the inner machinations of Craig are an enigma, but thanks for watching & thanks for all the translation work that even made this video possible!

    19:15 I think that it’s good to assume that octarians, opposed to octolings, have only a PART of a soul, since they’re made from cut-off tentacles. They only might have that tentacle part of the soul inside, which is why they’d be able to be sanitized, and could also be the reason there’s more octarians than octolings in OE since they might be EASIER to brainwash and sanitize.

    • @TheCosmicCloud
      @TheCosmicCloud  3 месяца назад +20

      I don't think we should assume that without more evidence. Splitting souls seems like it would kinda be a big deal, and we don't really know enough about how souls are even formed. I honestly think there are more sanitized octotroopers simply because there are more normal octotroopers

      @@audreyholmes9751 Yes, and I think that was the logic behind Octotroopers being made from severed tentacles. The thing is, we don’t quite know the relationship between brains and souls. • @starsilverinfinity
    @starsilverinfinity 2 месяца назад +85

    About the severed tentacle Octarians, I have what might be a good -game- theory for them:
    In real life Octopi, the tentacles actually all contain their own little "mini brains" - these allow the tentacles to act with so much seemingly independent intelligence at the same time and are a good part for how Octopi can do what they can with their tentacles.
    Going with this train of thought (which I hope is becoming more obvious what Im getting at), it is likely that the Sanitized Octoling Shavings/Severed Tentacle Octolings just came from a sanitized version of the source material that normal Octoling shavings come from - as in, they got sanitized traditionally then the Shavings were cut off to be independant. It is also why they have no souls/cant respaw n - their like a severed limb, not an original mind/body of their own.
    This would then suggest that the Octo Samurai is actually a more traditional form or some other variant of Octoling
    This theory also e plains alot about their behavior and I think might fit with the Octoling society as far as I am aware - actual octopi can regrow severed tentacles, so if the same transfers this logic to octolings they can mass produce/mass replace these guys by just clipping them off of donor octolings. Considering iirc Octoling society is alot rougher and resources are more limited, having soldiers you can print, discard, and replace this efficiently is really useful and would further e plain the difference in their treatment compared to say, actual Octoling units.
    It would also e plain why they seem so. . .simple minded: the Shavings quite literally have simpler brains. It would also e plain why as far as I can recall we never see them actually walking on their own - they're always plugged into some sort of technology they then manipulate via I assume some sort of cybernetic interlink which is plugged into their stump. It would also further separate them from the Samurai, who acts alot like a more traditional Octoling in many ways and can even respawn.
    But hey
    thats just a theory
    a game theory!
    Thanks for reading

    • @TheCosmicCloud
      @TheCosmicCloud  2 месяца назад +21

      @@starsilverinfinity A lot of your ideas about normal Octarians are pretty much confirmed! The Splatoon 1 artbook said that non-Octoling Octarians are produced by severing tentacles, and that they are more primitive/ less intelligent than Octolings.
      Pretty sure the machines they drive around on are just weapons, though. We can see them standing on top, so they aren’t “plugged in,” just controlling them with a steering stick.
      When it comes to Sanitization, I personally think they would be severed before they are Sanitzied. Otherwise I’m not sure what would be happening to the Octotroopers in the Belly Phase. Not to mention the Haikara Walker art showing unsanitized Octotroopers. The idea of being able to mass-produce soldiers makes sense from Octavio’s perspective, but it doesn’t really like up with what we see happening in Kamabo

      As for the Octotroopers. . .hrm, well I suppose there is more plotting and thinking to be done clearly. Maybe they just dont have a soul as strong as others do - their just slivers, not full blown originals. So when you kill them the soul doesnt really become visible separating out of the ink, but there is still something for the process ot latch onto? Abit like how in. . .Undertale (oh no Im doing it too) boss monster souls remain for abit after they die but normal monsters tend to just vaporize immediately

    To speculate on Agent 3 and the physical process of the 2 parts of sanitization, I think it might be possible that agent 3 was only given the 2nd part of the process.
    For my evidence for why, I've got a few reasons below BUT TLDR:
    Agent 3's skin does not absorb the IV goop, so the goop is easily shot off, sanitization part 1 allows the IV hoop into the subject's skin therby changing skin tone and why we cannot simply shoot goop off the other octarians.
    As it was said, the process of sanitization changes the subject's skin color. While it was directly noted to be green, it is possible that that is due to the Ink in IV bags given the octolings rather than the bathing process itself. Note that agent 8 is allowed to choose their skin tone at the start of the Octo-Expansion. That is par for the course in the series, but could have greater implications here. This is further backed up in side order as Marina describes that the subjects of the first part of sanitization are like a empty husk.
    Leading off of that idea, its possible that the IV DNA is only allowed INTO the subject when they are sanitized and thus empty. Agent 3 keeps their cannonical skin tone and the Hijacking (aka IV DNA) goop is ON them, not at all absorbed. I believe this may be proof that the Hijacking goop is the same goop not only used for all the sanitized subjects but also is only allowed IN the subject when they are "empty" after the first step of sanitization.
    This makes some logical and narrative sense as if Agent 3 was just given the goop and is now suddenly brainwashed, we'd need some sort of reason why other subjects habe to go through the through 2 step process. So by saying the reason for this is that the goop is easily shot off without the first step, we can tie a gentle knot around how the process requires two steps and why Agent 3 is an exception to all the other octolings in the DLC.

    Here is my attempt to reconcile the lore of Splatoon 2 and 3:
    COVERING someone in the blended ink dissolves their memories within the ink, and then being INJECTED with the blended ink adds the dummy information. Additionally both of these inks may have been tempered with in different ways, like the ink they are covered with is devoid of memories, causing the memories to diffuse out of the subject, and the ink they are injected with using the IV bags is filled with the dummy information, and since the subject has lost their memories, these false memories diffuse into the subject.

  • @warpstarrogue3554

    My best guess for agent 3's "sanitization" is that TarTar rushed the process on Three, immediately going to step 2 in a very crude manner. Since Eight was climbing out of the area, along with a lack of time for a proper version, the commander whipped up a dollup of ink to hijack Three and pursue the escaping octoling. My guess on what it means for the process, I think it shows both sides on what if one stage of sanitization is done, but not the other. Eight is obviously step 1 but not 2; complete amnesia of the individual. Three however, is step 2, but not 1; being controlled against their will. This is also probably why having the ink injected is so important. If it isn't injected and instead just smacked on, another subject can easily remove it on accident or purposefully, undoing the work and removing a soldier.

    17:14 the ink in those IV drips doesn’t have the swirly, blended texture that sanitized ink does, so it probably is different than the ink used for the memory removing part sanitization. Then the not-blended ink being the dummy information would make sense. Maybe when they are injected with that ink is when their skin turns green?
    Another idea is that the regular green liquid from the IV drips is the one used for removing memories, because the green liquid Eight is floating in at the beginning does not have the swirly blended texture. Maybe the blended ink is the one that puts in dummy information?
    Also, at 17:05, if the blended ink is what removes their memories, why doesn’t 8 lose all of her memories again when hit by blended ink during the levels? Is it because she has no memories left? Or is it a different kind of ink that the octarians shoot out?

    Probably explains why Octo Expansion’s explanation makes no sense in comparison to the updated Side Order explanation.

    17:45 could it be possible agent 3 was controlled by the second step of sanitization? Injecting dummy information without first removing the memories? That would explain why a version of Splattack plays when you fight controlled agent 3, and why agent 3 doesn’t need to gain their memories back like agent 8 does.

    My personal head canon to why Acht still has her passion for making music because it isn’t etched in her soul, it’s etched in her very being, kinda like how the inkantation literally changed the dna of octolings who heard it. So even when she got sanitized, her passion for it still remained.

    I'd really like to put the theory out that rather than the ink removing memories, the ink carries the data that overwrites personalities.
    Mem cakes are a product of scooping out a subjects memories, such as 8, and dunking any formerly unwilling subjects in ink overloads whatever thoughts and personality they had left, hence why tartar could take control over 3, brief as it may have been.
    Besides, water is an excellent transmitter for sound waves, and given musics primary role in every games lore to date, it's plausible that the data being carried is whatever music tartar needed to overwrite someone's brain. In addition, Acht being somewhat willing to become sanitized would have given tartar the music he needed in order to sanitize more people more easily.

    Theres actually a possibility that the common octoling cut tentacle enemy doesn't have a soul due to being cuttings from an already sanitized octoling instead of it being sanitized after already being made. I wonder if that means that only full body octolings have souls. kinda dark to think about tho lol.

    Maybe the blob on A3 is the Dummy Information, their mind wasn’t emptied first so Tartar controlled him externally.

    I love playing a game based around the main character being a 14 year old girl going in mass genocide as she wipes out energy bases of an “inferior” race, causing them to experience settlement crushing power outages. (Said character will work with said inferior race in 4 years)

    I have a theory: sanatization and brain washing are two separate things. test subjects are sanitized so they have an incentive to get to the surface, and if they fail, they get brain washed. these are, however, never said to be part of the same prosses. this would explain agent 3.

    I'm curious on how Acht has their memories of Marina and Octarian life in the beginning during the events of Side Order. Since they were sanitized they lost all their memories and they didn't go up the Spire because they got hurt. How would Acht remember anything if they didn't even go through the Spire and get their memories restored?

    2:51 It is interesting though because there have been observations made that Tartar's motivations differ depending on what language you're playing the game in. In the Japanese version, apparently Tartar's reasoning for despising the Octolings and Inklings isn't their fighting over small genetic differences or vain obsession with trends, but rather their hedonistic lifestyles. It's in the American translation that this was changed to fighting and vanity, which I think is interesting considering how our culture is certainly guilty of these, whether it be our nasty history of racism and xenophobia based wars/fighting, or our ever present reality that's overruled by capitalistic greed which fuels trends and fast fashion.
    It's especially interesting to see the differences in translations given that the main plot of Octo Expansion seems to center around this idea of interspecies racism and propaganda, which is furthered in Splatoon 3 when we hear that there are some areas of the Splatoon world where octolings and inklings already coexisted, and this idea of segregation is a regional thing.

      @@shegscousins7531 No, Marina is not Sanitized. She can change her hair color just like every other Inkling and Octoling, and has been seen using a wide range of colors during Splatfests in Splatoon 2 and 3 and in Side Order
