YES YES YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A VIDEO LIKE THIS!!! This is so true!!! No notes on his character motivations, you NAILED them!
Some of the comments have already mentioned stuff like the Salmonid Trade Deal and the beginning of Splatoon 3, so here's some of my own thoughts on the things that you didn't cover! (WARNING IT'S LONG I'M SO SORRY)
    First, the child soldier thing:
    - One of the most recent Side Order interviews confirms that Octarian society can be kinda broken down into different "levels". Depending on an Octarian's skills, they can go to multiple different, specialized schools that suit them best! The standard Octotroopers and the like don't ever go to the super elite school that Marina and Acht went to. It's not a stretch to assume that the same goes for the Octolings, too!
    - In the case of Marina, despite being stationed in Slimeskin Garrison and having been trained like the other Octolings, it's unlikely she was ever meant for combat! As a member of the Wasabi Supply Unit - as vague as that status is - it's far more likely she was put there to help with the Flooders and Great Octoweapons (as mentioned in her dossier log) using her engineering knowledge! Probably even in the "Propellerland" kettle!!
    - According to an even older interview (one which I was sadly not in the fandom for during that time) all of the enemy Octolings we fight in the hero mode are adults!! Or, at least, significantly older than Agent 8 and the Inkling agents.
    - Regarding "taking over the surface"... as far as I'm aware, it doesn't actually say that Octavio SPECIFICALLY had plans to overthrow Inkling society, (at maximum) just get revenge. That's why your comment about training the young soldiers to take over the surface kinda caught me off guard?
    - ...All this to say that, while forcing (certain kinds of) young children to endure strict schooling and rigorous training is wrong, Octavio wasn't actually putting child soldiers directly into battle!
    The tentacles:
    - Another old interview talked about Octarian reproduction! While Octolings reproduce the same way Inklings do, the creation of lesser Octarians is done by cutting off a tentacle from the host! Since octopods in real life can regrow their limbs, it doesn't affect the host! And the "mini-brain" thing mentioned by another commenter explains how the Octarians gain sentience!
    - A lot of comments pointed this out, but yep! That IS Octavio's arm powering the Great Octoweapons and Octarmaments!!
    - Which... man. Imagine cutting off your injured arm, a constant reminder of the war and your own defeat, over and over to power more machines of war... only for it to keep growing back in its same, scarred state :(
    - As for the sentience of the scarred tentacles powering the weapons, well... it's not too different from killing the fully sentient Octotroopers trying to defend their home, is it?
    - Something funny, no shade intended since you didn't know the lore when you made the video: "They seem pretty compliant and willing to control" That's cause it's his arm, dude... (lighthearted)
    Callie and the Octarians:
    - Another comment pointed this out, so you already know this, but the Splatoon 2 relationship chart implies that, to an extent, Callie was NOT kidnapped by Octavio! While it's most likely that he used her weakened emotional state (as a result of her recent stress and loneliness) to coerce her into joining, she went with him willingly!
    - This point comes from a post made by dr-spectre on Tumblr, so I'll copy and paste what he wrote: "Being hypnotized is described as having 'heightened attention, increased focus and heightened suggestibility.' You do not get put to sleep and become a puppet as popular media shows it to be, but instead you are hyper aware of what is going on around you." From this information, it's also debatable as to whether or not the Hypnoshades even controlled her to the extent that we think!
    - In a similar vein, a wildly prevalent INCORRECT belief in the fandom is that the enemy Octolings' goggles are ALSO hypnoshades. It's been confirmed that the goggles are meant to enhance the user's senses, and play no part in controlling anyone!
    - To stretch it even further, it's possible that the Hypnoshades are actually just fancy Octoling glasses, provided that the description of hypnotism and the goggles are so similar. But we can't know for sure! And it sure doesn't help that Octavio describes it as "remixing Callie's brain".
You didn't imply any of these misconceptions (which was AWESOME) but for the people confused about the Calamari Inkantation, or the role of music in general:
    - Contrary to popular belief, the Inkantation DOESN'T free you from mind control! Yes, it's freeing you from brainwashing, but not in the physical sense - just breaking down decades of propaganda!
    - Marina writes that many Octolings are still stuck underground. While this demonstrates that she views Octarian society as something negative, it also implies something greater - that is, many of the Octarians who heard the Calamari Inkantation DIDN'T desert. Maybe it was out of a feeling of obligation, or maybe they just liked how their life was. Either way, whether Marina likes it or not, there are undeniably Octolings who heard the Inkantation and just... didn't want to leave!
    - Turquoise October music doesn't hypnotize, either! It's meant to boost morale and keep the soldiers focused. Now, is this probably used to keep them calm and more likely to follow orders? Probably, yeah. But that's the beauty of morally gray characters!
And, finally, some fun facts to finish it off!
    - From one of the elevator dialogues in Side Order, Octavio was involved in Octoling education enough to have frequently gone on long tangents about the importance of working hard!
    - Marina has a sticker of DJ Octavio's logo on her laptop!! She also doesn't seem to hold any resentment towards him (further evidenced by obtaining Octavio's palette, like you said), just like Eight!
    - Multiple tracks within Side Order emphasize the previous point: Musically, Marina LOOKS UP to him!! Aside from the obvious reference to the Onward leitmotif in Unconscience, Onward can also be found in the tracks 0pt0ptic0n, C0ld St0rage, and even the ELEVATOR music!! Since Order took from the subconscious of everyone that worked on the project, it's INCREDIBLY likely that the musical references were a result of everyone's memories of the army. And while it can be argued that those tracks were only pulled from the other Octoling engineers, considering Marina was the primary developer of the Memverse, a significant portion of it was no doubt pulled from her!
    - From what Smollusk says about Octavio's palette, I like to believe that he's still looking for his missing troops! Octarian society would've already proven themselves to be capable of functioning without his direct rule, as seen in the significant length of time he was trapped in the snowglobes, so it'd make sense if he was comfortable enough to keep looking for his missing soldiers instead of ruling!
    - Octavio's palette's color chip bias is Drone (referencing the Octarian technology) and SUPPORT!!! :D
TL;DR: DJ War Crimes is my favorite character in Splatoon, even with all the messed up things he did... ESPECIALLY in terms of stealing the Great Zapfish (and the subsequent poor treatment of the smaller Zapfish), feeding his people anti-Inkling propaganda (evidenced by one of the Splatoon 1 Sunken Scrolls on the anatomy of Inklings), 'kidnapping' (complicated, explained above) Callie, and overall just being a super strict ruler. But even then, everything he's done has been completely understandable.
Because, at the end of the day, he's just a scared, traumatized old man trying to protect the people he cares about! And that complexity is what makes him so AWESOME and FUNNY! I love him I wish we could see more of him

Yes, finally, some talk about the story of splatoon! DJ Octavio, for all we know, was leading an entire society and army for over 100 years, all underground, with diminishing resources. Of course he would get desperate, but in splatoon 3, when push comes to shove, he was there to save the day because he cared about his people. Hopefully in some dlc or side stories or in a new campaign, we get to see more of Ocatvio and cuttlefish talk about their different views about the war and settle on a truce to help each other when the time comes

One of the reasons why I adore Splatoon's story is the mix of morals. We are shoved into the perspective of an INKLING, and are told that 'Hey, the Octarians are evil!' and we believe that. However, through viewing the story in different lenses, nobody's really the villain here. I adore how Octavio's core to his actions is attempting to help his people live a better life, no matter how 'evil' it might be. The inklings have forced them underground, and ignored them, pretending they were gone forever. That's evil right there, but it's true. Both parties, and any party in this world, all have some issues with them, and because of the surface level perspective, we have to look outside the box to find out what is really going on.
Amazing work with this video! Octavio is one of my favorite characters in all of Splatoon because of how cool he is as well as his character arc through the past three games. You gave him the justice that he deserves!

I want to add to your point about Callie, it wasn’t really just a kidnapping. The relationship chart specifically states that Callie will “hear him out,” and it seems like she is able to go about her own devices in the domes (decorating them). She also definitely wasn’t doing too well during post Splat 1 / pre Splat 2, so I think it was definitely more complicated than squidnapping, tho I definitely agree w/ your points about it being to raise morale w/ his troops.

About Marina starting at age 6, the wording seems to be implying that she's just going to school. Military school sure, but still school, not work. And Acht mentioning often being called to the instructor's office feels like being called to the director's office, kinda like at school so it reinforces the idea.
And Marina starting making weapons at age 10 seems to be because she's extremely gifted (it's also said before that how she skipped many classes due to how talented she is). This is not the norm for an average Octarian.

Pretty sure the tentacles are Octavio's, since they have the same star mark. Also, Octopi ( I know that it's Octopuses, but I think Octopi sounds better) have "Mini Brains" in their arms, which is why some of the Octarians are literally just severed tentacles.
Oh, and the whole Hypnoshades thing was just made up by english translators. Most fans kinda just ignore that, since Callie canonically started hanging out and sympathizing with Octarians.
finally, My headcanon is that the military training is optional. Like how kids can be taught hand to hand combat but it's not a law.

Plus, DJ Octavio made a trade deal with Salmonoids. He gives them weaponry, and they give him Salmon eggs, which is what they used as power prior to Splatoon1. However, Mr.Grizz started a company to gather not just regular eggs, but their Golden eggs as well (Those are sacred and thus were not traded). Since Inklings were employed by Mr.Grizz, I imagine the Salmonoids informed Octavio that Inklings were killing them and stealing their eggs. That probably pissed him off, since Inklings didn't need the eggs, so why gather them?
it would only be in the third game that we would learn why Grizz was gathering Salmon eggs, and it was something nefarious, and something the Inklings didn't know.

This is a good video, but it’s missing a whole lot of very important information, and is using the dramatically changed US localization of the stories rather than the direct translations we have available thanks to fan efforts.
If you plan on covering this topic again, I’d recommend using the external developer interviews, Haikara Walker, and other such Japanese external media since they shed a lot of light on the story of Splatoon.
Also when in regards to Splatoon 2 and why Callie was even with the Octarians to begin with, I think it would be important to go through the Squid Sisters diary that takes place in between Splatoon 1 and 2. Callie was there by choice, she wanted to help them out since she felt bad for their situation. After going there once and seeing how the Octarians were living, she decided to go there on her own time away from everyone else and do what she could.
She made their lives a lot better, she made so many of them happy, she was more than just an idol to them, she represented the freedom and happiness they hoped to one day attain. The Sunken Scroll shows a peek at what she did behind the scenes, the reason however that she’s wearing those shades, is because she was going to leave them. She missed Marie, she missed her home, so she told them she was going to leave but planned on coming back, Octavio however realized that her leaving would only break the Octarians’ hearts and greatly demoralize them. So he gave Callie some trendy looking shades (that she kept putting on for some reason afterwards) which brainwashed her preventing her from leaving… and changing her personality quite a bit, was that an accident? Or did Octavio think that would inspire the Octarians? Or was that just his taste? The world may never know.
Either way, there wasn’t any malice on his part, I mean aside from the obvious. He never intended on hurting her, it’s the exact opposite, she was treated like a queen and worshipped by her adoring fans that are the Octarians. They didn’t know about the brainwashing, just that she chose to be there and wasn’t leaving for whatever reason.
Now while I don’t agree with his actions, both his and Callie’s taste in shades are spot on, they’re pretty cool if I’m being honest, they really remind me of the shades Avalon wears in LBP2. Does anyone else see the resemblance, or is it just me?

It's worth noting that it's at least implied that Octolings living outside of the main Inkopolis area were unaffected by The Great Turf War. Splatoon 3's Sunken Scrolls show that Shiver's clan has been living in the Splatlands for generations. Mashup/Warabi of Diss-Pair is another Octoling with no known ties to Octarian culture. It's very likely that The Great Turf War only happened for Inkopolis. That makes DJ Octavio even more tragic- he just wants to rejoin his people who aren't facing the same energy crisis and prejudice of his subjects. Did he still do awful things? Of course. But it's a tad more understandable.

Octavio not being a villain makes perfect sense to me.
He's someone who was in theory, thrown into a major role before he was truly "ready" to take on a ton of responsibility.
The theft of the Great Zapfish was most likely a last-resort choice, since things were dire by the time Agent 3 turns up.
Ironically, Agent 3 showing up and shaking up the status quo lead to a long-term improvement of the overall quality of life for the Octarians, and we know from 3 that Octavio cares about his people. So if he ever found out about Kamabo... I know there'll be Hell to pay if it hadn't been paid already.
If anything, the Great Turf War arguably didn't end until much later than recorded, as it initially ended without a proper conclusion. If there was a proper conclusion, then we wouldn't have Octavio resorting to stealing the Great Zapfish on 2 occasions, kickstarting well, everything covered in the single-player campaigns (base AND DLC).
Seriously, all Octavio wants to do is make some sick tunes and look out for his people, and he'll do anything to make those things happen. Tartar and Mr Grizz... those two want life on Earth *dead* just so their ideal world can take its place.
Seriously, Mr Grizz yoinking the Great Zapfish lead to Octavio helping with the finale of Return of the Mammalians, as unlike Mr Grizz, Octavio takes better care of the Great Zapfish, only using it to power his Octobot King. Grizz used it to power an ENTIRE ROCKET!! aka that thing is way more energy intensive. No wonder the Great Zapfish is not looking healthy after the events of RotM, only looking much better after a few months pass by (trainline opening up to Greater Inkopolis back in Feb '23).
If we ever get a Splatoon 4, I'm OK with Octavio taking a backseat to all of this madness, and hopefully retired. He's long earned it in my view. I mean, being the main leader of the Octarians from the age of about 28 (presuming he's the same age as Cuttlefish and the presumption of the GTW ending exactly 100 years before Splatoon 1's events, with said events happening in their 2015), and maintaining the role for a century despite everything... yeah, he's earned that long overdue retirement.

I ultimately think it comes down to societal views over time. Back then, the only way for the Octarians to survive down in those domes was fighting back and stealing their power sources due to the inklings arrogance in not supporting them. But now, with societal changes in inklings with them becoming more welcoming and more friendly in terms of their views towards Octarians, with Marina being an example of this as they realised Octarians can be good with Marina existing, the Octarians who have opened their eyes due to the inkantation feel that what the Octarian like government and military were doing was wrong if the inklings are being so welcoming to them now more than before, of course they didn’t know what it was like before. Whereas DJ Octavio, still believes that fighting is the only way and his arrogancy grows just like the inklings before and still believes fighting the inklings and stealing their power sources is the only way to survive down in the domes, as he is used to the way things were before, but at the moment when they team up against Mr Grizz and when the inklings and the awakened octos save the Octarian army too from the fuzzy ooze, Octavio and the Octarian army finally sees that they CAN have common ground and live alongside the inklings in harmony, and that everyone, is the fate of the events of the splattastic saga. What’s also funny in the change of modern views between like civilisations is that disputes between inklings and octos would be settled with wars but with disputes between splatsville and inkoplis it’s settled with rap battles (Frye and Pearl), and this is also reminiscent too of “the great turf war” turning into “turf war” which is more of a sport.

Call me a downer but I still doubt the way the Octarians are being "welcomed." Marina’s initial impulse after hearing the Calamari Inkantation was to leave the "oppressive" Octarians behind without a second thought. The first thing that happened when 8 got their memories back was fighting an inner hero in the form of their old enemy while the Calamari Inkantation blasted in their mind. Even Smallfry is affected by this song.
      Why?
It's a song by Inklings, for Inklings. It's carved into Inkling souls and etched into others, their ideals taking center stage for a long time (Long enough that Pearl was ready to kill Octavio because she thought he overworked Marina.) 8 escaped this fate, but had to hide that fact because of the Squidbeaks. Where they stand now feels less like peace and more like surrender

  • @bobbyk7

Wow! You actually cooked a 5-star gourmet with this video! We rarely see content like this that address these kinds of topics!
I’m in agreement about Octavio. While he has done some very questionable things, his ultimate motivation was always for the benefit of his people and to give them a sense of morale, hope, and discipline as they are living in desolate conditions and quite frankly were exiled and left to ROT there by the inklings after the great turf war all those years ago, with no kind of supporting aid or at least some kind of possible peace treaty and diplomacy. Nothing. Just left to fend for themselves. This ties into why Octavios mind frame is the way it is and why things were militarized so as not to remain vulnerable.
As for the Squidbeak Splatoon, their motivations are also understandable, the city was running low on power and they needed to get the Zapfish back. Simple. They were pretty much getting a taste of what it was like living low on power. But I’d argue their actions were also questionable too and they are not completely in the right either for certain. It’d be cool if there was a video that addressed this particular topic as well.

Gotta give props to Nintendo for creating this great story about grey morality and misunderstandings between 2 tribes. It kinda reminds me of Ever After High and their story. There's actually quite a few similarities between the two pieces of media. While they both were made with the purpose of selling merchandise to consumers, they didn't do a half-baked job in doing so. Both of them have well crafted stories about grey morality and how there's two sides to every story. In Ever After High, the children of classic fairytales are expected to follow in the footsteps of their parents. Raven, the main protagonist and the daughter of the evil queen(the one from Snow White), doesn't want to do what's expected of her because she wants to live her life the way she wants to. Apple, her storybook counterpart, and Snow White's daughter, doesn't mind doing what's expected of her because her life isn't so bad. Raven doesn't want to be told how to live her life based on who her mother is but doesn't want to hurt her friends by doing so. Apple isn't bothered to see things from Raven's perspective and just thinks she's being selfish for not pledging to do what she's expected to do. Neither character is right or wrong for wanting something different than the other person. The same principle can be applied here. DJ Octavio may do some bad things, but he just does them to ensure that his tribe doesn't deteriorate, which does make him a good leader because at the end of the day, he cares about his tribe and just wants them to survive. He doesn't do evil things for the sake of being evil. He does them to cater to the needs of his people. The Inklings also aren't in the wrong either. They just interpret things differently. They just think DJ Octavio is being evil and taking his revenge, but that's not true. It's a really great and well written story, and I'm glad they got to have a happy conclusion in Splatoon 3, where both tribes set aside their differences and lay their feuding tensions in the past. In fact, i think this great story is one of the reasons why Splatoon was as successful as it is. I can't wait to see what happens next in the story of the Splatoon universe because more is definitely going to come, and now that Splatoon 3 marks the "end of a story arc" I wonder what other arcs Nintendo has planned for our marine creatures. Maybe they go up against a new threat or something. I'm just hoping they don't go with "Oh no, the great Zapfish is stolen. Let's go on a quest to get it back" because that storyline should be over by now, but we'll see

He built a 24 hour theme park, employed Callie to help redecorate Octopia (Which is what I'm calling Octo Canyon/Valley.), and built a giant mech that also doubles as a DJ booth. He's probably got a screw loose, but he's not really a War Lord. He cares about his people and wants them to be happy, which may be why he hasn't gone after anyone who's deserted after hearing the calamari inkantation. Hell, we see him dancing to that heavenly melody as well, so he probably has that same desire Marina and the others have, but as the ruler of the Octarians he cannot leave, plus he probably thinks that if he did, he'd be killed or something.

  • @ewankidner3466
    @ewankidner3466 6 месяцев назад +1

You know, the first time I played splatoon I noticed something, when the octarians came, as far as we can tell, all they did was take Zapfish, but when we go to the octarians place, we don’t just retrieve the Zapfish, we massacre hundreds of octarians, most of which weren’t even involved in stealing the Zapfish,
I mean seriously, we go to THEIR territory, and now suddenly WE have the right to attack THEM, considering how strict and desperate their society may be, the octarians guards literally just doing their jobs standing in one position, may not of even had much of choice, no, these poor guards didn’t deserve to die, and we don’t see any little octo spirit come out of them so it’s possible (although admittedly not confirmed) that they don’t respawn, and even though you can just sneak around them you’re congratulated for killing them, I mean come on, that’s messed up.
Although overall, I would say that both inklings and octarians are not really good or bad, just 2 different sides fighting for survival.
Also, unrelated topic, inklings and especially octarians are said to be quite smart, but if you really observe them, you can realise that a lot of things about them are actually quite dumb.

I feel bad going back playing the old games and splatting them, knowing that they could have lived a life on the surface after Octo Expansion. Though, I thought they did release little octo spirits when they died? But I don't 100% remember.
I agree that the Inklings and Octarians aren't good or bad, just fighting for survival.
I think they (at least the Inklings) aren't dumb, just really, really lazy. The Octolings also aren't dumb imo, but I don't think they're lazy either.

    • @ewankidner3466
      @ewankidner3466 6 месяцев назад +2

@@goldengamer6474, let me explain some of the dumb things both of them do.
      Inklings,
      1. Put zero security around the Zapfish, even when they have been stolen multiple times.
      2. You can tell that they probably just reverse engineered technology, since if they were smart enough to make the tech that they have then they would have been able to make solar panels, which, as an engineer, I can confirm are extremely simple, and we know exist in Splatoon, as we see the NILS statue has them.
      3. Base huge amounts of their culture, e.g. splatfests, off of a single old telephone.
      Octolings
      1. Despite having ink proof materials, they make a lot of equipment out of things that are susceptible to ink, for example, Octarian shields were completely ink proof in Splatoon 1, but after that they aren’t.
      2. Octolings wear Armor that is literally useless, it’s just a few strips over the chest, is probably not ink proof either, and half their skin is exposed anyway, this is a supposed military.
      3. If you look below, there are a lot of unused spaces below the floating platforms which octarians could use instead, but they decide to use their platforms that probably use up quite a bit of power, I mean seriously, what were they thinking? ‘Hey we have a power crisis, oo I know, let’s make a load of unnecessary platforms and expend a lot of energy’ they probably reverse engineered everything too, I mean they have huge showers on wheels, and floating platforms, if they were really smart enough to make those themselves, they would of been able to make solar panels, sure some places are underground, but you could put them above the ground instead, and something else, despite the fact that they clearly die when falling off the floating platforms, it seems octarians aren’t smart enough to invent something as simple as hand rails.
      4. After they steal the Zapfish once, a SINGLE inkling comes and takes them all back and takes out hundreds of their soldiers, and not a seasoned military commando veteran, all it took for the inklings to do a huge blow to the octarian MILITARY was a literal 14 year old sports girl who was literally JUST hired, you’d think that they would have enough pattern recognition to realise that stealing from the inklings is going to cause more problems than it solves but nope, they just think ‘Let’s once again steal the Zapfish from the species where ONE of them can take us all out, what could possibly go wrong?’ You’ve got to admit, that’s not very smart.
      5. The great octo weapons and armaments are designed in a way where their weak points are exposed when they attack, or all the time, they could just design them so that they aren’t, but no, weak octo arm exposure it is.
      6. Many of their weapons, like flooders are very impractical, instead of literal showers on legs, the could make very long ranged faster shooting guns, but don’t, they waste huge amounts of resources on the most useless things possible,
And don’t get me started on the octo troopers guns they shoot slow shots that take more than 1 second to move a few feet, you can literally watch the shot approach you, then slowly walk out the way.
I could show you more for each, but I don’t need to, I think my point had been made.
Although I would like to point out one more.
How pearl Marina and eight fought TarTar,
      It’s overly complicated and risky,
Shoot Bombs that DON’T auto detonate(technically making them not bombs), not all at once but at specific times after each other, have eight do life threatening stunts that will take almost as long to do as the weapon takes to charge, then get pearl to fire the killer wail.
And on top of that, pearl says she is ready a fair bit before the statue is fully charged, yet decides to wait until the last second to use it, why?, to show off
Hey Bob, why did Inkopolis get destroyed, well Jeffrey, pearl didn’t want to look like a dork.

Think of Marina and the other Octarians' military training like a curriculum. Every society has a different curriculum for their own needs. Octo Valley is a desolate wasteland watched over by the leader of the opposing side of a war and ridden with booby traps designed to keep the Octarians in line. The first thing they'd want to teach their young is how to defend themselves, and potentially beyond that, serve and protect their people (Though in Acht and Marina's case, of course there are other ways to contribute to Octarian society like internal security and engineering)
