I think the main reason they changed the special meter was to see how charged your special is. The points for special is reflected on the amount of marks on the UI, with 1 mark being around 10 points. For example, Jet Squelcher has a 180p special, so it has 18 marks, while Tri-slosher Nouveau has a 210p special, so it has 21 marks
I think the reason the map squid icons don't have that much depth to them now is just because the map screens in 2 and 3 are more top down instead of at an angle, so it would be a lot less noticable
@@Boooo I never noticed that,, thx for the wisdom! Maybe they changed to a top down perspective to account for motion controls now affecting the map screen
@@Jyuratodus_Enjoyer I ABSOLUTELY WILL!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! I was worried it would be grating to hear someone talk about UI in splatoon for 6 mins,, but I’m happy to know it’s the opposite :D

I hope Splatoon 4 will combine S2 and S3's special charge meters. I want it to be S3's special gauge meter, but the bars are your ink color (like in s2) and the sub icons you see in the menus (instead of s3's simplistic black ones)
Loved hearing your thought on the UI. So many great details like this make Splatoon so immersive and memorable. Nothing is overlooked in the UI designs. I was so happy that you mentioned a few from Splatoon 1 too! The eyes on the second screen inklings are so cool!! I love that Splatoon embraced weirdness from the very beginning lol. Great video!
@@DekuGamer thank you so much for such a kind comment! Nice words make creating videos so worth it :D,, also I agree I’m so glad they started off the series with such a distinct design in the UI! @@DekuGamer also I just realized I watched your video on secret details in splatoon 3 designs from 2 years ago,, it was great!! Nice to interact again :D I hope you have a great day!
my favorite part about the loading screen icon is that the colors it shifts between will change depending on which city you're in and the main theme colors from the game that city was featured in (orange/blue for inkopolis plaza, pink/green for inkopolis square, and different shades of white in the order sector)
there really is so much to appreciate when it comes to splatoon ui! as someone who’s only played s2 and s3, the 3d squid on the map for splatoon 1 was really neat to see. thank you for making this video, i really enjoyed it!
Thx for such a nice comment! :D I hope you get to play S1 sometime the maps are awesome and the weapon kits are a blast! I'm also glad you enjoy the little squid icons on the map screen too, they're super cool!
Yeah, the UI has always been a nice way of completing the atmosphere of the game. Great video. I also love the nod to Tokyo Mirage Sessions, in the BGM.
@@akaimizu1 I appreciate the compliment :D!! and YA I was looking for songs to add to the video and came across that one from Tokyo mirage sessions and absolutely loved it, I wanted to play that game quite a bit some years ago, I should check it out!
@@sheebitz thank you a MILLION for the kind words!!! :DDD,, it’s nice to know you and some others enjoy hearing about stuff like UI! I’ve always really loved it and I was a little worried that it would be boring or grating to listen about but I’m glad it isn’t!
one thing I've always imagined for the loading icon, if they ever gave a visualisation for the "liquefied crystals" or whatever it was in the Alterna logs that was found within the squids, they should ABSOLUTELY make it look like that. (Hero Mode spoilers!) I had an idea for a short rewrite for RotM to explain why cuttlefish got dried up the way he did. I thought it would be cool if maybe to complete his plan Mr grizz needed a crystal from one of the strongest inklings there is. Given Cuttlefish fought so strongly in the war, and is still kicking now, he would be the perfect subject. Grizz would monologue for a bit and show off his new crystal and BOOM!!! floaty loading icon in his hand!!! It would just be so sick tbh
THIS IDEA RULES!!! that's such a creative way to integrate a loading icon into gameplay! something that's pretty rare considering the current landscape of unobstructive UI design, but splatoon is an exception to that so here's hoping for something cool like that in splatoon 4!
Does anybody know why the special gauge UI isn’t a full circle? I guess you could say it’s because the sub weapon UI needs to be there, but it was also like this in Splatoon 1.
@@Olavi_VLIi.47 I looked into it and my best guess is to have the special gauge appear more as a progress meter rather than a loading icon, complete circles don’t have a distinguished start and end so players would have to rely on having a tiny amount of special filled to see the start. Rather than the open loop that we have which has a defined start and end of the meter
@@Friendsare100 That would make sense for Splatoon 1/2, but now in 3 there’s the orange bars that would make it so we can see where it starts counting.
it might be that at this point changing it would be more jarring for players than just keeping it, also as you said i think fitting the sub weapon icon in there keeps the UI compact and unobstructive
I'd say another reason is that a real live tachometer also isn't closed off which may be due to practical reasons, like a second gauge, or to be more legible as OP stated. So the UI could be that way to resemble those meters and to be more legible. Personally, I can see the gauge fill from the corner of my eye and when it's closest in my vision, it's full, which wouldn't be possible if it was completely closed!

The reason the squid does a little spin on the pointer is probably cuz it resembles a squid roll
