#splatoon3 #conditioning #awareness
When I started playing Splatoon 3 I had auditory hallucinations of the "splat bomb about to explode" sound effect for like a week and it would make an alarm bell go off in my everyday life. Opening the fridge? Bomb. Received a text? Bomb. The human mind truly is a double-edged sword

There’s a bird that makes a lovely chirping noise outside my window every afternoon, unfortunately after getting back into splatoon I hallucinated it to sound exactly like a splat bomb for a good few days
Wow
@@Kay-ql2wlIf i ever get a parrot ill make sure not to teach it bomb sound cues. 🗿
I remember back in Splatoon 1 I would randomly hear an Inkstrike from time to time outside of playing the game. I knew it was just my mind playing tricks on me but those instances made me realize how powerful the mind is.
It also made me think, "If this is what is happening to me from playing a silly squid game, what are veterans going through?"
As someone who played both Splatoon 1 and 2, the sound cue of an inkstrike being activated, a booyah bomb charging or a splat bomb blowing up conditioned me so much, Im pretty sure if you plyed that song near me irl I would turn around in fear the SECOND I react to it

same here, I'm a Splatoon 1 veteran and legitimately think i would wake from a coma if i heard the sound of a luna blaster

This is ofc why salmon run is so beloved, bc the alarm bells never stop 😂

It's funny how the horn is intended as an alert but as you progress it sounds out so often that it just becomes background noise to the CHAOS that is happening around you.
As a Salmon Run player since Splatoon 2, whenever I hear the "brrrrr" of a hovering Flyfish I immediately stop shooting and go recharge my ink while looking around for the hellspawn.
YES. You go BlueKirby. ChocolateKirby is coming up with you to take him out!

Alarm Bells, a.k.a. "Oh no! Something happened." reaction.
There are many things to consider as "Alarm Bells" because many scenarios can lead to you getting splatted. So if one gets splatted too often in a scenario, the best is to reflect on what happened, think of how to not get into that scenario again, and act/react accordingly.

My issue is I've accidentally trained myself so my alarm bells end up being "someone used a booyah bomb, go kill it, someone used a crab tank, go kill it" and then I tunnel vision on stopping a special that I end up ignoring other players and they kill me. Ah well, at least im getting value out of my quick respawn...
lol "EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE RUN" got it **runs toward the fire**
I *just* played a few matches without audio and it was so much harder. I kept dying to specials (booyah, ink strike, reefslider) and it occurred to me just how much i depend on my hearing in splatoon games.
I STILL have sting ray ptsd. I can still hear it at night, it sends chills down my spine.
All of this advice could easily apply to just about any game challenge. Thank you for the lesson, and especially the advice about replays and looking for the information 10-15 seconds before a mistake happened. It sounds so obvious now that you’ve pointed it out, but I’d never considered that before for whatever reason.

Quickly after getting Splatoon (3) I startes watching your videos and learned not to run away from players running towards me. Yesterday I actually chased someone who ran towards me first, and I got em!
Looking forward to seeing this and improve more :)

Certain modes and weapons have built in alarm bells: For instance, Clam Blitz plays a unique noise any time a power clam is made, and when the basket gets popped, it plays a sound a second beforehand so even before the enemy team starts scoring, you know to shift your attention to the basket.
Mines can also do this for you, though because they don't kill you usually need to be close enough to capitalize.

I mained Chargers in Splatoon 1, and even though I haven't played that game in a while, I bet I'd still react without thinking if I hear the Killer Wail (aka Sniper Perch Evacuation Machine) warning. 🤣

@@yo-xd1716 r.i.p Splatoon 1 - Splatoon 3 fresh season
I'm so allergic to sounds, when my bf plays splatoon next to me and his team mates activate a booyah bomb, I start to spam booyah on my game lol
This is why I don’t understand why people play this game with external music. There are so many sound effect cues that could help you get the jump on a foe or know where an enemy is coming from! Use your eyes AND ears when sharking.
Personally it helps me focus more, because I have ADHD. I tend to loop one song/playlist on low volume so it becomes background noise to me, kinda like white noise.
I totally get why this wouldn’t work for others tho :)
I tried playing splatoon once with no audio because I forgot them and it was literally awful its basically a second set of eyes on the look out for possible threats.
I have adhd so playing with headphones is overstimulating sometimes. I do agree with you tho, being able to hear does help the way you play a lot.
I agree with you that the various sound cues are useful, however, at times the in game music too loud and distracting especially during the last minute of a game where the tempo increases. I wish there was a way to turn down just the music level separately from the sound effects.
I wish there was a music volume slider in Splatoon, it helped me a lot in Overwatch. Since there isn't, I'll keep playing with constant extra noise on my headset.

This has actually unintentionally happened to me in splatoon. Was playing recon deathmatch before a tournament match, my teammate was using 96 deco, and I couldn't contest kraken so I just squid jumped to base when he popped it. Come the match later that day, someone pops kraken, my hands make me squid jump out... whoops XD
Just to continue on a comment about how, "sticking and moving" is a concept rooted in boxing: where u hit first then avoid the counter.
While "psychological" conditioning might have been "discovered" by Pavlov. The idea of conditioning the opponent to respond predictably is common in many martial arts which long predates Pavlov.
And imagine how many smart thinkers ubderstood the concept of conditioning long before it had been articulated.
How many simple beings condition what's around
Psychology and splatoon? my two very favorite things? yes please!

I main e liter and quite literally use the ink mine as an alarm bell, I place it somewhere behind me and when it goes off, i know someone is trying to get me, which i wouldnt have noticed without the mine. Especially useful if Im somewhere high up, then I place it infront the wall I have to climb
Will all of this be on the final?

I like your videos but one thing I find very distracting about them (and the sole reason I can't enjoy them sometimes) is the background audio playing while you're talking. Can't you silence it completely?
And another thing is the start jingle tends to be louder than the speaking volume so I can't just have these running in the bg, I have to keep changing volumes...

OMG, yes! When they increased the gain for a lot of enemy subs and specials in the last splat3 update, it was a godsend for me!
3:09 i just heard the power clam noise and i thought you could make a push or something.
But then i realized the enemy has it LOL
So maybe that alarm bell is just: someone has a power clam both the enmy or us.
The audio cue for when an enemy makes a power clam is slightly different than when either you or a teammate has a power clam, so you could probably refine that alarm bell to see whether or not you should be pushing or defending.

The alarm bells are crazy. After playing for a while, if you snuck up behind me while I was cooking dinner and played any given special or sub sound - hell, even the painting sound of some weapons based on fire rate - I would immediately respond, and that's kind of terrifying.
Also worth note is sometimes my monitor freaks out and goes soundless until you fix it with the OSD switch button on the bottom. This is always awful because, as mentioned, so much of that experience is based on sound. It happened to me during a tournament round of Splat Zones, and even watching the replay of that round you could see I started doing noticeably worse (we still won as we were pretty far into the game, but I went support mode with my Splash, taking us down a frontline weapon)
So, yeah. Don't underestimate The Noise(tm)
I’ve been training like a Pavlov squid, let my independence out to take a hike…
Very impactful video this helps me a lot. Thank you
i mean.. i do notice the activation of most specials instantly (mainly cus im a good listener) but my deaths was mainly caused by enemies that out ranged me (currently using the custom jr)
I listen to other music when i play splatoon, so ive learned to only use my eyes, making me the shiftiest squid on the map i swear. I would listen to the game, but louder music makes me better at eliminating threats on average
I played alot of splatoon one ant the inkzooka startup sound is ingrained in my brain, if I hear that noise I will turn around and run in the other direction or try to find cover as quickly as possible.
Does anyone else ever unconsciously booyah to charge the enemy's booyah bomb or am I just going crazy
When i hear the alarm right before the enemies' Killer Wail, my fight or flight kicks in
Also you pronounced his name right
So I'm not good at the game, I just have great survival skills
Got it
glad to know my brains a broken piece of trash that learns to BE MORE TIRED when it hears an alarm.

Not only is this good advice for splatoon (and other videogames), it's good advice in general for life except in life it can take years to learn the tells of things.
This also works for Salmon run except you can't watch replays of runs which is a shame because it would be invaluable to everyone. As for an example of learning a tell, other than booyah in PvP (do crabs have a louder sfx like trizook?) If I hear the sound of a flyfish I know I want to focus on them and especially if I have something that can damage them other than splatbombs.
Perhaps a video done in the same fashion as a hazard perception test would be useful for people? For those outside the UK, when we're sitting our theory test for our drivers licence we have to watch a series of clips and click the LMB when we think we've spotted a potential or developing hazard soon enough. The software grades how we you did after the fact. It's not perfect by any means but it does work.

Yeah, I usually try to keep the volume louder than usual when playing splatoon to keep an eye/ear on those “alarm bells”
Same with other games like certain music queues like in Sea of Thieves when a ghost ship is about to appear or a megalodon is around the boat and we need to get ready to fight and spin the boat around. Heck, even with just hearing distant gun or cannon shots, I’ve quickly learned to get ready to fight in case there is an enemy player or npc nearby
I stopped playing sea of thieves. Drifted too far for my liking from what drew me into the game at launch.

I really appreciated this video and I like how it brought into something that I’ve been thinking about such as what triggers me to change my line of thinking. It really intrigued me how you went into how these alarm balls are anti-tunnel vision while I felt that the ones I have make me hyper focus on one aspect. Auditory noises such as a charger going off are one of my bells because I immediately shift my priority to them. I know what they’re capable of and how strong they can anchor a team. So I immediately go after them which ends up in me feeding xddd. Love the video!
