When I was younger, my abusive mother was really good at painting, and the one time I tried to paint with her, she got really angry at me for mixing colors together. I really wanted to learn how to paint, but that day she took the wind out of my sails. Twenty years later, I decided to buy a box of watercolors and watched your videos to learn some basics. The result of the painting came out something akin to a kindergartners finger painting, but I was allowed to paint like that this time. I'm allowed to mix colors and try techniques now. I had one of your videos playing in the background and it was like therapy hearing your gentle demeanor compared to my mother's harsh criticism. I am not a good artist at all, but now I get to learn. Thank you for your videos!
Hello friend. You wrote this comment 6 months ago but I just wanted to say that I am proud of you. You opened up your heart and got some paint and brushes and paper and sat down and let go. You stopped the hateful inner voice each of us with abusive/ critical parents carry in our heads. I want you to continue your art therapy, and I wish you all the wonderful things life had to offer. I feel like I just went to an art therapist haha! Your videos are always so encouraging. I stopped painting a few months ago after someone told me I shouldn't use tutorials. I've never had a single art class and have only been painting a little over a year so I don't know how else to learn. Anyway, this video was helpful! Thank you!
Aww you're too sweet! Tutorials are such a great way to learn! It's like taking an art class from an artist. You get to learn how this person creates different things, so you can create your own beautiful art with all the learned skills!

@@kimberlyearly8918 it's ALWAYS okay to use tutorials/classes in order to learn as an artist. I've been painting for years but I love learning new things that I had no idea about from other artists! You don't have to do everything on your own or figure everything out on your own

Wonderful and inspirational demo. I can understand why your students are making strides in their art. You offer the tools and techniques to develop the skills a student needs if they decide to paint what they see. All too often students are given formulas to paint symbols. That's a good way to get paint on paper and break the concept that they' "can't paint." But it doesn't give them the option to expand any farther. This painting shows them the next steps and I am so impressed. What I sincerely enjoy about your work is that you don't stop there. I recently learned, actually, I recently came to realize that I was struggling to paint because of an injury I had a few years ago that left me partially paralyzed for a number of months. I assumed that I would bounce right back and be able to paint again. I couldn't. It was a constant struggle filled with self shame. I couldn't make my hand do what it used to and I couldn't remember what I needed to in order to mix color, adjust water, etc. I left off after over two years of struggle, even though I had a fine teacher. The truth was that I had lost a lot more than I knew and I wasn't willing to admit it to myself or anyone else. I found you by accident while trying to stream on my brand new TV. I saw something interesting so I stopped to watch. I hadn't heard your name until Emma Lefevbre did a review of your book in that video. It was outstanding. So, I looked you up. Now I too am a follower. Thank you for your candor and encouragement. I've ordered your book and I think I'll be able to pick up a brush, follow and learn all over again. Art is for the artist but the joy we get from creating is shared with a world in sore need of healing and something positive to witness. Your tutorials will offer help, hope and joy to many and they intern will bring that light to all they meet.
I've been saying this for years to people who ask me how to grow as artists - I'm a plein air watercolourist and so I get approached a LOT - and I always tell them: get a peer group. Go find like-minded people. I did that with life and portrait classes and it really did help me.

I hadn’t really given this much thought but now that I think about it, my creativity and creation motivation were at their peak when I was around a bunch of friends or acquaintances who did all sorts of artsy things and shared them online - I’ve been physically away from most of them in the past couple of years since life got busy and we’ve all at some point talked about how our passion for art and stuff faded and we couldn’t find the motivation to keep going. I found I started things like watercolours and bullet journaling when I saw my classmates and friends doing it too, so I felt discouraged when they stopped sharing them as well. It’s physically impossible for me to be close to them atm since I’m abroad but this is making me feel more motivated to try doing things and sharing them again. I don’t have many supplies with me rn but, screw it, I think I might just buy a couple of things online and get back to it! My husband’s been insisting that I paint again but I felt like my stuff wasn’t “good enough” to keep going. I think it’s time I force myself out of this rut… thanks Mako!

Oh, that was beautiful and I enjoyed listening to you as you created that painting! You do make it look so easy. I just bought your book and will definitely want to participate in your August artist retreat. I am fortunate to live in a small town that has a great Art Gallery where watercolor and other art classes are provided and locals are encouraged to put their work in the gallery each month.
