      If you think you're going to be able to support yourself financially from art, you are in for a sad shock. Art students are already off to a bad start because of earning a pretty much useless degree. Zero return on investment and in yhe end you will either have to teach art, struggle and be below the poverty line, or you'll wise up and get a job to FUND your art making. People do not pay more than $100-$200 for ANY art unless it is a commission, and those are as rare as unicorns. Art school brainwashed you. Wake up.

      @@bethbloomer5951 I think you misunderstood, I'm not in any art school, I'm just studying art during high school. I know it's a very big struggle to earn money in this field, but I also plan studying architecture in order to, at least, feed myself. I would really appreciate if you could provide more information of any sort about the artist's wage and lifestyle (if it's as bad as you say) because I love art and working with it, so please share any tips you have 😊

    LOVE-LOVE-LOVE this and your BEAUTIFUL painting! I find the starving artist archetype so serious and tortured. "I must suffer for my art!" It's the Victorian romanticization of what an artist is. And it's such B.S. Looking forward to your take on perfectionism and procrastination. Liz Gilbert says that perfectionism is fear dressed up in high heels and pearls. Love that image! :-)

    As an artist, I am often faced with this dilemma. I went to art school and art instruction was my career for a while and then I went corporate to have a more stable life. But I know that I long to do creative, artistic endeavors every day instead of sitting in an office. And when I see freelance artists I think it's so cool. But the thought of financial insecurity is really daunting as is my own self doubt. I think another hindrance is being an artist but also knowing sales and marketing skills to be able to make your art a business. It definitely isn't the beaten path and I think that is why it is so frightening to walk it.

    Thank you so much for the love and suppoer. 30 years ago, i wasnt sure about this craft. I found you a year ago and you are a blessing to the art world. When i was young and my parents lived in a small house in the countryside, they told me, “Art is a hobby not a career!” That broke my heart and i questioned everything. I was only 15 and loved drawing and painting so that hurt me. I then got less and less interested in art and. I started getting into accounting instead because i realized art wouldn’t make enough money. I stopped until this year. When i started to paint again, my art was more akin to a hand print crafted by a child. I was unsure but i kept painting and got better with each piece. Thank you so much for being my mentor and being with me this rough journey!

    Hello. It has been a while since we talked. Thank you, Mako for being with me the past 2 years of this art career. I started improving my skills and felt confident to sell my art in a gallary. My art sold very well and i felt more confident in this craft. I just want to say thank you very much for being with me through my ups and downs of art. I recently got my kids into art as well and they love painting with me. Thank you for everything, Mako.

    When I was younger (5 or 7), I said I wanted to become a writer - I loved writing poetry, poems, short stories, even went as far as writing a novella for a Literature project in junior high... Writing was so therapeutic for me, it was almost otherworldly, and it seemed like I was really good at it.
    Thing is, I was also good at Science and other stuff, so I often got told by many family members, "Why not become a vet or a physician instead? Something you're good at and actually allows you to make a living? You won't be able to get a house, travel, or have the life you want if you spend time writing!".
    I once answered back, "Well, Tolkien, M. K. Hume, Rowling, Meyer, Brown and Follet are authors, and they've amassed quite a fortune, haven't they?", only to be told, "You actually think you'll be as good as them? Those are the lucky ones - the rest of the authors in the world have to find other jobs or they'd starve otherwise!"
    That did it. I put down my pen in 9th grade and didn't write for almost a decade. Went on to study 2 different careers, and now I'm a teacher - I feel like I've been living a zombie's life for the last ten years, though. What you mentioned about "doing it for the love of the craft" really struck a nerve, because it's the same bloody thing I get told as a teacher. I ended up being told the same thing in a different field of work! I should've just pursued my dreams and goals instead.
    I regret my decision and want to pursue creative writing more seriously, but have no idea how to go back to doing what I loved - I still write as a hobby sometimes, and I'm still working on a series that I started many years ago, but I can't find the courage to publish anything or pursue creative writing as a career because there's always that tiny voice inside my head that keeps repeating my work isn't good enough to be published, or even considered by an agent in the first place.
    It's so frustrating, terrifying, and painful.

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  2 года назад +1

      You're not your thoughts, only the thinker of your thoughts! You can choose what you want to think and believe. So if you deep down want to do something and it sets your heart on fire, then do it! It doesn't matter what others might say. You get to decide what your story is and what to think. There will always be someone better or worse than you. Or judge you, no matter what. But as creatives, we're not here to compete or seek validation but to contribute with our art and make the world a better place. Imagine all the people who would read your stories and see them as blessings! Just start! See this as your moral and ethical obligation :)

      Awww yess! I think everyone that starts working on their new dreams have to starts somehow. Even if it means eating cheap frozen fastfood or sell some of your things so you can at least pay your bills that month. Been there, done that! Haha But anything is possible if you just keep going. Switching my thinking to who would I BE and what would I do if I already had what I want, really helped step up my game. And anything is 100% possible, 100% of the time! And anything else is just a story 🙈

      @@Makoccino Right on! Right now though I have a full-time job, but I make a lot of time for my art. I was never 'good at art' because I was so self-critical that I didn't even wanna try it. So I only did photography and videos because that's what my mind told me was possible. But I did a ton of internal work, which you probably have done also. My mind always kept telling me it's 'too late' to start painting. But now I just do it anyway. What a beautiful adventure. I don't have any expectations of when it's gonna happen or how it's gonna happen, but all I know is I can and will become a master watercolorist. Thank you for all the inspiration and teaching. It is priceless.

    It's very important to do an honest assessment of anything you want to make a career out of. Turning your hobby into your job can be a dream come true or hell on earth. It is true that very little people manage to make money doing whatever they feel like. For everyone else, there's always a sacrifice. Sometimes the content that would be popular is not what you enjoy doing the most. You have to devote time to marketing, which nowadays usually involves a strong social media presence. You have to manage legal and financial stuff on your own. You have to set your own deadlines and make your own schedule. It's freedom, but it's also more responsibility. Everyone who wants to "follow their passion" should be prepared for the trade-offs, and decide if they're worth it. People who have made it in their chosen field will often tell you "if I could do it, so can you", which is just as reductive as "you'll never make it". The truth of the matter is that making a career from a passion/hobby is somewhat luck-based, takes lots of commitment, and just isn't a good fit for everyone. Don't let anyone hold you back, but be realistic and know what to expect.

      Yes, I believe everyone can achieve anything if they are really committed to it. Some people would love to follow their dreams, but they are not willing to go through everything that it takes and they prefer doing something else. And that's okay! It's just sometimes other people will try to tell you what you can or can't achieve and you start believing them. I always knew I wanted to become my own boss and I rather deal with all the things you just mentioned than doing something I don't really care about. The work I do is meaningful to me and I can contribute to the world in my own way. I just hated it working for other people and how they sometimes treat you as a employee. Back then people would also tell me that it's only possible for 1% of people, so why would you even try. And back then I didn't even have a social following, just a dream of being my own boss and I was willing to do whatever it takes to make it work. And there were people who were their own bosses, so I believed that, if they can achieve that, so can I! And even everything fails in the end and I have to go to a "real job", at least I tried and I don't have any regrets! So as you said, don't let anyone hold you back because you deep down you know if it's something for you or not!

      @@Makoccino I don't think the "only 1% of people make it" is meant to be malicious, often people are just worried. Part of it stems from late-stage capitalist ideas about what is "real work" and what isn't, but the other part is genuine and legitimate concern. It's not just about what you're willing to do, it's also about what you can do. Realistically, building your own brand and business over the years until you can make a living from it is very hard, if not impossible if you don't have a financial safety net, higher education and a pre-existing social connection to people already doing what you want to do. The nature of success is that all of the people who aren't successful stay invisible. All the people who lack the necessary opportunities don't have a voice. We don't live in a world with equal opportunity (yet), so it will always be magnitudes harder for some people to achieve their dreams than for others. Going for stability is not an unwillingness to try hard, or a lack of courage, it's often a lack of real safety. As you will know, in Germany and other European countries, we have basic unemployment benefits, health insurance and (almost) free college education which are inaccessible to so many people in other countries. I'm not saying this to discourage people from pursuing a creative career, I'm just saying that coming from a place of privilege, it can be hard to imagine that there's real limitations which can't be overcome by sheer willpower alone. For some people, trying to build a business is a real risk to their existence and not just a matter of "do I want to put in the work or not". Success always has an element of luck to it, and some people can afford to try their luck, and some can't. Again, I'm not saying this to detract from the message you shared, just to add some more nuance to it. I'm glad you put your message out there, because creative people need to hear that they don't have to fear putting a price tag on their work, and that art and money don't need to be mutually exclusive.
