This was so helpful! I haven't done any watercolors for decades and I realize now that the main reason was that all of my teachers failed to teach me properly. One said to me: don't paint as if it scares you, but that's what his instructions did for me! I must watch your other videos. I think I am going to enjoy myself so much with the watercolors I received as a gift yesterday.
This was one of the best explanations and demonstration of how to draw with a brush I've ever seen. You are a very talented instructor. Thank you.
Awww... thanks Toni - your comment is very much appreciated - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
You use a lot of negative painting as well. Your style and end result are beautiful. I really need to get back to watercolor and try this. I think I will devote a sketchbook to practice your techniques. I just love the final result. I’ve been painting mostly in gouache and my painting has gone downhill due to health problems and concentration issues with pain, but I miss watercolor. Your style is one I was never taught, but the end result was always my desire.😊
You're right - I use a LOT of negative painting in my work, always. I'm really sorry to hear of the health problems and concentration issues - I hope dabbling in watercolour may go some way to helping you with that. Thank you for the comment.
Дорогая, желаю Вам скорейшего исцеления и пусть акварель и любовь близких помогут в жтом🙏 Желаю здоавствовать и процветать максимально долго!!!
Привет из Украины💛💙
Absolut best teacher in watercolor i have seen on RUclips. Great great inspiration. Thanks.
👋 Peter, thanks so much for this amazing video, I have been painting water colours on and off for a long time time. I find drawing with the brush an amazing way to paint a picture, I will practice more often now, thanks once again. Xx
Thank you for the lovely comment Annie - practice and perseverance is everything!
Thank you, Peter! This has taken me right back to the roots of my watercolour. I haven't lost the joy of playing with it and 'seeing what happens', of watching paint flow into paint to do something wonderful, of landscapes, big skies, old barns, farmhouses, fields and trees... Since I moved, the landscape has changed, and within me the longing for those open skies doesn't go away...
Even so, the techniques still work for the ancient 13th, 14th, 15th century buildings of the local town. I just need to translate what I know into those beautiful buildings, the steep, tree covered valley side from my windows, the rock colours and formations so different... to stop feeling inadequate and remember just who I am as an artist.
Through your videos, you're reminding me of the techniques and colour play I love, and when health and weather permit, to 'just go there, get on with it and stop being so tense about the results!' And to go back to using loose, larger paper (of which I have plenty!) and not tying myself to a smaller sketchbook all the time...
Daft, really, here I am giving myself, and hearing you give us, me, the exact same advice I gave / give to my students.
Thanks again, Peter.
You're very welcome Mrs Barnabas - thank you for your very enjoyable and insightful comments... all good advice (and, yes - sometimes we have to offer it to ourselves as a reminder... we are our worst critics)
@@peterwoolleyartist 😊
Now this is really watercolor! Beautiful.
Thank you for the lovely comment Hanichay
So helpful. I dont want to be fiddly. Just bought a large brush to push myself into that "flow" you demonstrated so beautifully. Thank you.❤
I’m so excited! Your book came yesterday!!!😮😮😮😂🎉❤😊
Aprpo of nothing (we met briefly at Patchings) today at a art group I did a scene of rocks and waterfalls and I used the seemingly simple (Woolley) method of chucking carefully a blue, red and yellow and made something from it all. My Wife when she saw it said, and I quote, that's beautiful. So thank you for the demos you give us, after 20+ years I finally got that reaction. Keep up the great work 😁 Pete's art. Long hair, discussed the grand circle trip with you.😊
A result! Nice one Peter.... I'm pleased it was helpful to you! Thanks for the great comment - I wish you well, and probably catch up with you at next year's show...
New viewer and subscriber … I love the demo and Timelapse results and will give this a try … today! I am 8 months into watercolor … 5 painting regularly and at 69 I am not averse to listening (and taking) advice 😊. Thank you!
Welcome! Thanks for the subscribe. 8 Months!... marvellous!... enjoy the journey...
@@peterwoolleyartist I have done 3 paintings drawing with my brush ... slight progress ... need a lot more practice!! BUT, what fun this method is - I love it!
A wonderful amount of key information with simple illustration and explanation in an economy of words and no unnecessary chitchat. Thank you. I am saving this as a reference for an upcoming card I will do for a friend recovering from surgery. 🎨👏🏼👩🏼🎨
Thank you, I will have to watch again…your tutorial is helping me!
I've just discovered you. I went to hadrians wall and was inspired by your video and the views at housesteads fort. So I'm gonna get back into watercolour painting. I love your painting style and I think I can match it using your tips. Thanks Peter.
Lovely painting - I enjoyed the explanation!
What a lovely result from some simple mixes. Very relaxing and encouraging ❤
Thanks Julia - Relaxing and encouraging is good - mission accomplished!
This was very helpful and i can't wait to try!
Simple yet it's so beautiful, I want to try it out tomorrow. Thks for showing it Peter❤
This was brilliant! Thank you so much! I learned a lot!
That was awesome 🤩
I will try it myself. Thanks!
Your painting ability is amazing! I find myself using my left over paint to do cursive writing, play around making shapes so not even close to your level but feel painting with the brush is easier for me than drawing anything with a pencil! Ty!!
Thank you Appleknocker - playing around with it and exploring the medium's potential is all a valuable part of the learning process... enjoy!
Thank you so much! I feel this instructive video is going to breathe new life into my painting experience. I am just so excited to put it into practice and on that note I am off to do just that.
Absolutely gorgeous I'm going to give it a go 👍👍
I love your tutorials and it would be great to see more as they are so helpful. I love the end painting - great atmosphere ❤
Thanks for the feedback Diane. Many more to come... I'm a slow editor, but I get there eventually. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Very helpful techniques. Thank you!
So beautiful! So happy to have found you!!
I love that advice because it’s what I’m used to doing in oils. A very liberating approach! And a lovely painting! 🥰
Beautiful Peter … the step by step analysis makes painting simple
Thanks Kannan - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
You are a master of negative painting.
Thank you Skye - I'm pleased you enjoyed it
Beautiful!!!
Great video Peter, thank you for sharing. Always a pleasure watching you paint 😊
You're very welcome, Susan - thank you for the lovely comment.
Loved it. Thank you.
Thanks my friend, great power in the simplicity. Paul
Fantastic approach. The juxtaposition of a well-explained, tutorial that emphasizes a single concept, followed by a time-lapse of that concept being employed with all of the other tricks of the trade, is bloody brilliant! The speed viewing of the follow-on piece was indispensable for me to pick up the rhythmic “swing” of technique applications. It’s otherwise impossible to pick up the forward planning that is occurring live in the painter’s mind; for as much as a painter says (and believes) that he’s working without planning, it just isn’t possible for the professional. You have a winning teaching formula here. I have your books, and know your techniques, still, I can say this was a revelation to me.
My dream would be to see you walk out the techniques of Sir William Flint. I love to see those demos where you’re seen grappling with something not already in your ken. It’s an exploratory surgery of your brain.
Thank you for the well thought-out and clearly expressed feedback... mission accomplished - I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing your expertise!! Lovely painting 😊
Truly inspiring. Thank you Peter
This is wonderfull, thank you so much!!

It was wonderful. Thank you so much!!!
This is brilliant, and quite lovely, thank you Peter 💜🎨
Awww... thanks for the lovely comment Bonnie - I'm pleased you liked it
Wow! What a wonderfully useful video. I can’t wait to try out the technique. I have a really tight, detailed painting style and I’ve been thinking of trying a looser style so this is the perfect video for me. I love the colours, especially in the second painting. Thank you 🙏
If it helps to loosen you up, then that's great... mission accomplished! Thanks for the comment Nancy.
Love it!
Magic! Thank you so much!❤
You are great! Thank you!

Wonderful tecniq ❤
A very interesting exercise; must give it a try! Saw you at Patchings Art Festival, but you were otherwise engaged in chatting to someone so didn’t want to disturb you.
Thanks Sherlock - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Patchings was good this year... maybe come and have chat next year...
This helps. I am used to drawing with a brush when painting with oil. Need to let go when using watercolor. Thank you

Thank you, you're very welcome - I'm pleased it was helpful to you - painting by the Thames sounds lovely!
Thanks master 👍❤
Fantastic video Peter, thank you so much. Wouldn't it be great if it was Ron Ranson who gave you that advice all them years ago!
Indeed it would. It definitely wasn't Ron Ranson, unfortunately; it was a little rotund bloke from Solihull in the West Midlands who spoke to me, imparted his knowledge and left without properly introducing himself. We'll probably never know who he was...
Very beautiful, thank you
Thank you Jackie - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Excellent content
Thanks Susan - that's much appreciated.
Absolut egy gorgeous thank RUclips.
Superb!
Thanks Suneeta!
Wow most impressive
Thanks Paul
My toxic trait is watching this and thinking I could EVER do something like this.
Go for it... you might surprise yourself!...
Thanks!
Thank you!!
Wow!
Great demo excellent style
Thank you
I am happy to found you in the internet...
Very nice demo, before you started defining the tree across the street, it sort of looked like the neighbors house was on fire.
You could have made dramatic smoke and a tiny bit of a black outline of the other house 🤔 but the tree was lovely.
Oh yes... missed opportunity there, Nicole... Thanks for the great comment. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Very nice, and perhaps a great technique for urban sketchers to rapidly capture a scene. But perhaps actually more difficult to do when you are trying to capture a specific scene in front of you rather than just making it up on the fly. The neat thing about watercolor is that it is perfectly compatible with pen, and if the painting alone looks a bit too amorphous, one can always add linework afterwards - I have seen some urban sketchers who do exactly this, i.e. first paint their scene quite loosely in watercolor, like in this video, and then adding the line work later.
You're absolutely right Brian - this would be the perfect setup for a line and wash. I love a bit of urban sketching... Thanks for the great comment and feedback
I like this idea … kind of the reverse coloring idea!
Great channel given me so much confidence thankyou. Could you tell me the paper and paint’s you use please. I’m using ALDI middle isle😂, I hope this half my problem. Thanks again
Paper is Bockingford 140lbs Rough for first demo - Saunders Waterford 200lbs Rough on final demonstration - Paints are mostly SAA Artist colours, but I also use Winsor & Newton. Aldi Middle Aisle?... time for an upgrade methinks. Thanks for the comment!
Would you mind telling me (us) what brush you used for this painting? And is it a sable brush? Thanks. I love the results you get w/ this!
I use a Red Sable Blend, made by Rosemary & Co - in this demonstration, I mostly used a size 10 round... for details on all the brushes I use, take a look here: www.peterwoolley.co.uk/shop_BRUSHES.html
Bellissimo!!! È un' invito a riprendere i pennelli ❤❤❤❤❤peccato che io fatico non poco a capire la lingua, amandone la musicalità! Tank you ,!!!
Grazie Luciana, sono felice che ti sia piaciuto, anche se il linguaggio in alcuni punti è un po' impegnativo.
So nice 👉🏽❤️❤️ 12:30
Thanks Maya - I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
🙋♀️And thank you very much for sharing your talents! Question 🙋♀️ I do have a question what size is your large round brush and which brand is it because as you know a size in one by one company can be smaller or bigger than another company! Thank you. I just want to get an idea of how big of a brush you’re using and what the brand name is thank you. God bless
Thanks for the comment Carebedford - in answer to your question, the brush I am mostly using in the video is a size 10 round. It's a Red Sable Blend made by Rosemary & Co, full details of which you can find here: www.peterwoolley.co.uk/shop_BRUSHES.html
How do you learn to see in negative? I think that is a challenge for me. I see a thing and i think "the thing" and not the negative space around the shape.
A jolly good question! We are not hard-wired to 'see' or 'think' in the negative... honestly, it just takes practice to appreciate the spaces between the brushstrokes (which are often just as important as the brushstrokes themselves... so it starts with just a basic awareness... if necessary, force yourself to think negatively). I hope that helps.
❤
Excellent vidéo, thx for posting but my goodness your paper stays wet a very long time - I suppose everything stays wet a long time in the UK 😂
Indeed it does - that's West Yorkshire for you. Actually - don't be fooled... there are a couple of moments in the video where I paused the frame to allow for my explanation before starting it again. Thanks for the comment.
Hermoso!!
Gracias Claudio. ¡Me alegro de que lo hayas disfrutado!
want more
