It's really unfortunate that the text about where each gourd grew got left out. It adds so much to the the lore and gives a clearer impression of how the land of Ashina itself reacts to the things happening it it. Like with the Demon of Hatred being a product of all the killing and war accumulating, so too the plant life is affected by bloodshed, fires, poison etc.

The contrast between Isshin and Owl in their old age is interesting. Owl has to resort to more tools and traps, while Isshin leaves some of his weapons behind, sticking only to his sword and taking advantage of his environment. Maybe just a coincidence, but it does emphasize how extraordinary Isshin is.

I really love this aspect. Owl's body is withering but his treachery perfected; on the other hand Isshin no longer tries to seek multiple avenues for the perfect method, in his old age he has mastered Mushinryuu (no thought/free from obstructive thought style) making him capable of executing techniques reflectively without the need to think about it.
I guess both of them grow in their own way.

I got so excited about the missing paragraph in the Withered Red Gourd's description that I completely missed the fact that the original says that the Gourd reduces fire damage, and the English localization does not. Thanks to @Combustible Lemons for bringing it up! I'll update the blogpost (b ᵔ▽ᵔ)b

I believe contact medicine inflicts a weaker poison variant so you can use it to avoid inevitable higher poison damage in areas?

This project is incredible and I'm growing more and more sad as it gets closer to ending. The amount of in depth research here is incredible and presented in such a clean and concise way, it is a shock to see a video of this quality not have over a few hundred thousand views. This channel is a gold mine and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves ❤️ good job with all your hard work Shetani, and thank you for putting in the effort. I was sad there wasn't a patreon or something of the sort where we could support your work

Thank you for your kind words! (っ˘ω˘ς ) Don't be sad though, there's still plenty of content to get through before the project is done (◕‿◕)

"If there is one single kanji Sekiro teaches players regardless of their knowledge of Japanese, it's this one."
Unless you're me, then the kanji that you memorize is DEATH

I think the last line of Contact Medicine has to be put in the context of the previous one talking about "shinobi using this medicine for a certain type of technique" and then follow it with "therefore they too know how to implement poison in their skills".

It is very unfortunate that the English localization uses such a large font, using up so much space. A good amount of information could have been kept.
PS. It is also unfortunate that there is no DLC for this game, I want Tomoe fight and a Lightning prosthetics.

I'm curious how accurate the Red Gourd's translation is outside of that removed bit of lore. I don't know if you follow Limit Breakers, but he recently released a video that shows the description claiming it "slightly increases burn resist" is quite inaccurate, as "slightly" is actually a 50% increase to resist, the second best in the game after the Ministry powder with 60% resist. It also reduces damage taken from fire attacks, like the Flamethrower troopers, Riflemen, cannons, and Demon of Hatred's fireballs despite not mentioning that aspect at all, also being the second best boost after the Ministry powder.
Is the wording different in the original Japanese, or is the info misleading about the effects even in Japanese? Considering it's boost is around 50%, while the ministry powder's is 60%, and regular powders is around 40%, all intervals of 10%, I wondered if it was poor localization and was intended to mean was "It is slightly stronger than powder", and poor word choice made it sound as though it was "slightly better than nothing at all".

In japanese it just says it "boosts Burn Resistance", but it does add that it also "reduces Fire Damage". The english translation seems to have been left unfinished to begin with.

    • @shetanislair

In Japanese, the Gourd and both powders share the phrase "increases resistance to Burning", and only Ministry Powder has the line "these effects [I think, all of them: resistance, reduced buildup and less damage from fire attacks] are slightly (わずかに) more potent than the regular Powder." Otherwise these items' effects are not compared or specified in any other way. The Gourd does reduce fire damage.
An oversight on my part, should've included this bit. Got too carried away by the missing paragraph, I guess (-ω-、)

I was also thinking that, since I saw Shetani uploaded this about a day after seeing Limit, and I also immediately wondered whether the "slightly" was added in the English translation, or if it was present in the Japanese too.
