I absolutely ❤❤❤ The Platters - or I should say specifically, the powerful, yet beautiful smoothness of Tony Williams' voice. For me, him and Dean Martin are 2 of my all-time favorite voices. Simply velvet. You already know this I'm sure but his voice really shines also on "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".

I was only 2 or 3 when this came out but I heard it on the radio BBC a lot, Mum had it on from when she got up until bedtime so we heard music most of the day. The Platters were great favourites but we didn't have records or a record player then so it was the radio where we got our appreciation of music from (and Mum God bless her). This song shows their brilliant talents, the lead singer has a wonderful voice and the backing singers are fantastic. Please listen to more of the music from that era sweetheart, they made some great music and the singers had great voices, you wont be disappointed. Your reactions were wonderful to watch and listen to, you said about hearing every word he sang and I know one of my Grandmothers would have praised his diction which was perfect lol. The rock 'n' roll era is generally recognized as starting July 9th 1955, the first time a rock and roll record reached number one on the billboard charts, and that was "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & the Comets. This record came out that November in 1955, being one of the earliest doo-wop rock and roll songs to be a hit. The lead singer on this song is Tony Williams, and of course this is an iconic group and an iconic performance. And the lyrics give the lie to the claim that rock lyrics are superficial. This thing is almost a poem. One of the great ones!
