The back story behind this performance is absolutely amazing. He was a nervous wreck, as he had a strong fear of performing in front of others, and further more, his parents were in the audience that night watching him perform for the first time to others. He said himself that he nearly fainted right before he started the song. Most of the start of his career was performing at small rented halls and venues to African American Marines on leave or being provided entertainment for in southern California, where the band got their name from. He used to perform on a completely empty stomach, because he said he would throw up if he ate before singing in front of others! I LOVE Your response. I was 24 when Bobby sang this live in 1965. It was written for a 1955 film about a man in prison who yearns for his wife. Bobby turned it into a love song for the ages. This was Bobby’s interpretation. He also had a head cold and his mom was in the audience for the first time. He was very nervous but one would never know. This rendition of "Unchained Melody" was one of the greatest singing performances ever. RIP, Bobby Hatfield, who left us way too soon in 2003 at the age of 63.
Last night I watched 25 - 30 Reaction videos of Bobby's performance. 5 or 6 were done by vocalists. All the women, vocalists included, just melted in their own ways, and the guys were equally awed by the potential of love that could evoke what this song by Bobby does. This is the only comment I wrote, though nearly every single video deserved it, but I have to admit, the Charismatic Voice woman does such a professional musical analysis, while melting like all the other ladies, that her stops and comments only add not take away anything from Bobby's performance. Oh, I should add that of all the videos I watched, I had streaming tears at times during most of them. This song, sung by Bobby hits the emotion of love like nothing I have ever heard. I teared up again today listening again to this video!!
Of all the artists that performed this song, Bobby Hatfield OWNS IT with this live performance. Just incomparable - no one will ever top this rendition. RIP, Bobby, you've melted hearts forever with this song.
@Vicious Alien Klown World Mercury was a great front man, one of the best. But his voice cannot compare to Bobby's raw ability. Not a bad thing, but just a fact. Both will be remembered, but for their uniqueness.
I agree, Senator. I've seen many of her reactions but for the first time, almost in spite of myself, I found myself crushing on her for her adorable reactions of Bobby's breathtaking performance.
@@MrHorimiya I have never known any woman, no matter what her taste in music, or her apparent "hardness" in attitude, who could listen to this particular rendition of this song, without either tearing up from a pent-up longing to hear these words and feelings from a man, or who wasn't in love, and vulnerable, with Bobby Hatfield as an artist, a story teller, and an honest, loving, good man, by that last note - and the following sweet, shy, unassuming smile. As a man, I have felt what this song describes many times in my life - that aching longing to receive the love of a woman you so desire that you would give anything for her to notice you - to love you. It was brilliant song-writing, with universal appeal, sung by a master vocal stylist who (like so many of the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s singers, instrumentalists, and drummers) had NO FORMAL TRAINING, and was just blessed with an ability and a strong desire to become what he did: one of the best, smoothest, extended-range male vocalists of all time. I believe this is a large part of what sets music of that era from everthing before or after it. R.I.P., Bobby. You will be remembered for a long time.
One of the greatest solo performances ever. Imagine the incredible fear and tension Bobby must have experienced on that occasion. What if his voiced had failed him with so many important eyes on him? And yet, he pulled it off ... masterly. One of the songs that always chills my spine when I listen to it. Always. It is simply beautiful in a magnificent way.
When she laughs and giggles like that it means the performance is really getting to her. She may be explaining techniques but the emotion shows through. I learn a lot from her; also love seeing her expressions. He makes me giggly too 60 years later.
Elizabeth, I really enjoyed your review of this wonderful song! I love to see you giggle and laugh and your deep breaths when you are so enamored with a part of the song. You are also very pretty and your knowledge of voice placement and pitch is amazing!
Billy Joel once said that the RB performance of this song was one of his very favorites. He stated that people just didn't realize how difficult this song was to sing and this man really nailed it.
This was his own rendition of this song. His voice was from the heavens no one's been able to copy his performance it was sheer perfection .He was the whole package women and even men loved him.
Absolutely. Bobby owned this old standard and made it his own. And yes. Even men loved him. I'm just now in my 40s and I love Bobby Hatfield's style, and I work it into my own.
@@williambill5172 Bobby said Unchained Melody -- an earlier cover -- was one of his mother's favorite songs, so he couldn't screw it up. Needless to say, she must have been proud.
Hello Miss Ma'am. This has to be the twentieth time watching this reaction. I love hearing him singing this Absolutely Gorgeous song. But what makes this video so special is seeing your enjoyment that you are having. Thank you and Have a Blessed Day.
I saw Bobby in Laughlin Nevada one month before he passed. He and Bill performed together and he sang this song of course. He did a marvelous job considering he was 63. You would be hard pressed to find a male vocal better than this live performance. He was a man of immense talent and he is missed.
I heard that Bobby had a head cold when he sang this on the "Andy Williams Show," Remember seeing this...a true professional , impressive, and memorable. I loved Bobby Hatfield, he is sorely missed! RIP Bobby!💝🌹
You can’t mess with a masterpiece and that what this is. The quintessential love song by the late great Bobby Hatfield. Covered by over 670 artists. But no one can match this live performance. Nothing else needs to be said
What I like is that although Elizabeth is trying to do a complete analyse of the song if you watch her softer side comes out as the music gets to her like so many other women.
So the song was written for a prison film. called Unchained. The song is about wondering if his wife will wait for him while hes in prison. "Time goes by so slowly" Time can do so much Are you still mine" In the movie he has a choice to escape or finish out his sentence and go back to his wife and kids. This particular live version Bobby sings completely different than the recording that we are used to. This is the only recording that i have found where he sings that high falsetto ending. All other recordings he does not go up high on that "To me...."ending
This comment should have more likes... it put everything into context for someone like me. 2 times I've invented a completely new song in my dreams. But songs are nothiing without context, and this song goes from being a buttery (although flawlessly executed) meaningless pop song just for showbiz, to something so much more powerful, and I now like this song a lot more.
Really enjoyed your video. No one can compete with Bobby's unchained version of this song. Would really like for you to do a review of the late great master Roy Orbisons Crying and Only the loney.
Elizabeth, over 670 artists have sung this song. NO one sings it like Bobby Hatfield! Bobby died in 2003, knowing that year, The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The reason this song passes all time limits, is because...it belongs to every Military Guy! Who left his sweetheart at home from Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan...every war and conflict past and future. It's the words he want to tell her and it breathes life into all who listen.
Bobby Hatfield is playing with this song saying look what I can do. It is absolutely phenomenal. You can tell he could do so much more. So sad we missed it . Bobby's talent will be missed forever, RIP Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers. I think one of the greatest of all time.
Girl, I soooo looove watching you smile and gigle and laugh like that! I can see you are enjoying this, which is precious. It just makes my day... Thank you!
In the day when he and his partner sang as 'Righteous brothers' they were called 'blue eyed soul' because they were white and had blue eyes. I also loved how he bites his lip at the very end - he knows he has knocked it out of the park. Apparently his mother was in the audience watching too so he wanted to make her proud
Great Analysis!! Other "reaction" videos lack yur vocal expertise & insight! You can tell by your pure joy reactions that you KNOW what you are talking about! Most of us appreciate the simplicity of this romantic song... but when you have a true music professional breakdown the natural talent and the genius of the presentation in detail, this God-given talent, i have learned to love this version even more!! I love your "total vocal nerd" moment! Bobby is singing in the heavens with the angels!!
43 years ago, I was at my first prom, with the girl of my choice… We are dancing a long time.. …and at the end of this song she kiss me first time…. So many memories.. thanks Elisabeth to bring this back to my mind…🤧😍
It is simply enchanting to watch a woman basically fall in love with this song and with the man singing it, as if he is singing it to her and her alone. Great stuff, Elizabeth !!!
Almost every woman I've witnessed hearing this performance for the first time has just that reaction. I've become convinced women today are starved to be sung to like this.

Thank you. The same here. I always loved this song, loved this performance. Outstandingly. Her breakdown can only lead to even greater appreciation of Bobbie's Voice, technique, and depth of understanding how to deliver this type of memorable performance with all the voice effects. WOW If even possible I now love this song more. (Sorry I get gushie.)
Bobby was nervous singing this song. Because his mother was in the audience and it was the first time she was at one of his performances. I think he did excellent and I'm sure his mother was so proud of him.
If I remember right, there's a longer version of this live vid where it can be seen that the Brothers are on The Andy Williams Show. They're dressed alike, they've just done another of their hits, and Andy asks them to do this song also. (This banter is all pre-scripted, of course.) Bobby: Sure, Andy, but that one's a solo for me. Andy: So, Bill, why didn't you get in on it? Bill: I didn't think it'd be a hit. Andy: What do you do when he's singing it? Bill: Go off in a corner and cry.
Nah, Elvis's performance of this song a month before his death (1977) was much more powerful and emotional. I love Bobby, don't get me wrong, but this isn't the best version of this song.
@@danieldickson8591 comparing Hatfield's rendition with Elvis and suggesting that Elvis delivered a better version is sacrilegious and a down right abomination.
Apparently, he sang the same song in the same way many times over his career. I remember when it was first released, as I was already a young adult at that time. I found your site by chance today while listening to Bobby sing this fabulous song (my favorite all-time song! Sung by my favorite all-time singer!), and I appreciated seeing your reaction and hearing your opinions of his techniques, etc. I've always known that he had an unusual range (especially, I guess, for a man), but it was nice to hear and see your reactions. I know nothing about singing, except I always knew he was an extremely talented singer.
So glad I discovered The Charismatic Voice - your technical review of this classic is spot on of course... but what I really enjoy the most is your real expression in the joy of music, your genuine reaction and facial expressions say all that need to be said... well done and thanks!
I am also a classically trained singer and voice teacher and I love watching your analysis. Your enthusiasm and positive response ( and your voice geekiness) is a lot of fun.
I was trained by a former opera singer. I like the analysis, but I really think that to appreciate the music you have to listen to the song in it's entirety first to get the true emotional impact of the entire piece. This way is like viewing the piece like viewing the Mona Lisa as a paint by number painting. Music like every art should first be felt rather than analyzed.
Elizabeth , I have watched many others analyze this song. You Show an absolute heartfelt appreciation of music and the true artistry required to achieve THIS level of perfection!! Very very few artists are able to convey this awe inspiring and joy to the listener!! You talked about his runs , any good singer can do runs , but to do them artistically and restrain from overdoing them is artistry in itself! To many singers, in my opinion , Way over do them ! Through ‘This Artist ‘ , the listener CAN FEEL , The Want , The Desperation, The Longing and The Hope this song and artist invokes ! TRULY AN ASTOUNDING AND OVERWHELMING PERFORMANCE BY Mr. Bobby Hatfield ! R.I.P. I love your enthusiasm , true appreciation and knowledge of MUSIC !! Thank You !! Alex C.
She's knowledgeable too, did a proper analysis of his singing technique, other than Fil from Wings of Pegasus, I've not seen other reactors impart any useful knowledge to their audience. I'm certainly going to watch her other posts.
I love how expressive your face is and - of course - your expert commentary. Just the joy of great music. And it's so fun for older folks to see the kidz discover the music we've loved for years. : -)
Beautiful commentary. A singer of great repute? Thank you, Elizabeth. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Bobby is an exceptional singer with a wide diversity in his voice; sound modulation over various phrases and vocally clean. My gosh! Such magnificence. 🌟🌟🌟🌟😊😊👏👏👏👏
Just to put this song in context, for the time. We were dancing to this at our high-school proms, the draft was still in effect and we were leaving for Vietnam. Even though he is gone now, 45 years later, Bobby Hatfield is still melting hearts and making memories. He didn't need auto tune, he was magic. Oof
GOD sure blessed him with a great set of vocal chords.💕🎵🎶
What did he die of???
@@JeanetteFaith He had advanced heart disease. The coroner's toxicology report showed cocaine use that probably precipitated a fatal heart attack.
@@mikejschin Wow. I would never have guessed he was a coke head.
Same for me…. A 79 year old man tearing up with emotion each time l listen to
his performance. Excellent!
Of all the artists that performed this song, Bobby Hatfield OWNS IT with this live performance. Just incomparable - no one will ever top this rendition. RIP, Bobby, you've melted hearts forever with this song.

And still melting hearts, and women's panties. ❤🎉😊

Pretty sure your giddy reaction was exactly the response he was going for when he sang this. Makes the heart flutter, even today.
Bobby singing Unchained Melody is the Mona Lisa of music. Unsurpassed to this day. This is a gift from God to Bobby to the world.
Well said. This is THE version of this great song.

Probably looking at his mother when he smiled. That’s what I like to think anyway, since she was in the audience.
That's rather a "I knew I was going to nail it, and now you know as well." smile. Now if that's not badass, I don't know what is. :)
He nailed women alright ;D
Joy and love in that performance and that smile at the end, no other way to sing that way
@@MrHorimiya I have never known any woman, no matter what her taste in music, or her apparent "hardness" in attitude, who could listen to this particular rendition of this song, without either tearing up from a pent-up longing to hear these words and feelings from a man, or who wasn't in love, and vulnerable, with Bobby Hatfield as an artist, a story teller, and an honest, loving, good man, by that last note - and the following sweet, shy, unassuming smile.
There's no way to describe this as anything other than perfection.

This masterpiece was a send-off song for many troops heading to Vietnam, it was a last dance for many who are on the wall in Washington DC.
Totally amazing how after 55 years he can still make ladies giggle and get flustered like a young high school girl with her first crush.

Fortunately, this masterpiece was performed in 1965 so there was little chance for a sound engineer to tinker with it.
Yeah, he uses a microphone and an amplifier though, therefore it must be bad.

The signature of this song is unusual. It's in 12/8 which gives the song a sweeping uplifting cadence.

Nothing else needs to be said
The only one who comes close is Elvis. But I still prefer Bobby.
I have that original record my nan left it to me with her collection.
Amen
You said exactly what I going to say. Thanks

That old chestnut
I was trained by a former opera singer. I like the analysis, but I really think that to appreciate the music you have to listen to the song in it's entirety first to get the true emotional impact of the entire piece. This way is like viewing the piece like viewing the Mona Lisa as a paint by number painting. Music like every art should first be felt rather than analyzed.
