Jackie Wilson, Tony Williams (the singer here), Clyde McPhatter, Sam Cooke were the great R&B voices that dominated the 50/60's. Listen to them all. For Tony do "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "My Prayer", "Red Sails In The Sunset" and "Twilight Time".
Tony Williams is one of the best tenors of his day, no fancy electronic equipment just his natural voice and a few simple instruments. This is true singing.
Kathy here - just found your channel. Love the Platters, I am 68 years old, and this was my parent's favorite group back in the day. The Platters were considered a "Rock n Roll" group back then. Their voices are so smooth, and the harmonies are amazing. I am not sure if there are any members still alive. But they were one of the most popular groups back in the 50's and 60's. Thanks for your reaction. Love seeing the younger generation finding music I grew up with.
My Dad was born in Nov 1939 and sadly passed away on Feb 15th, 2023. This is one of his very favorite groups from the 1950s Rock and Roll era. Ever. He was a huge fan of all the Doo Wap groups also. When I hear these songs it reminds me of him and, brings a smile. Thank you.
Please do… Smoke Gets In Your Eyes And My Prayer. This is some of my fav music. The platters are crazy good. Must have learned it from my Mama. ❤️ RIP. Great reaction as always my guy.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes has an outstanding ending that really shows the power of his voice, and how well the other members support him. A must listen for you. I grew up in the 50's and 60's listening to these songs. Enjoyed this reaction.
Groups back than was in my parents era, these group made and paved the way for groups that was after them, I am always going back in time and listening to them oldies but goodies. Thanks for all the greatest groups ever, we have to appreciate them🙏🏽😊
I'm a 70 year old white lady this song came out in 1955 when I was 3. I ask my daddy one day of all the songs which is your favorite He said The Great Pretender by The Platters . So every I hear it I think of him .And it is a beautiful song,Thank you for listening to it
The Platters are the ones that got me hooked on 50s and 60s Doo-Wop music! Please go down the rabbit hole with The Platters!!! My other favorites of theirs are My Prayer, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Twilight Time, You’ll Never Never Know, On My Word Of Honor, (You’ve Got) The Magic Touch, and I’m Sorry.
That song is from 1955. Yes, The Platters do have more fine songs. I would do "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" next, but other good ones are "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", and "The Magic Touch".
It's the inimitable Tony Williams! "Hit that note," you said. That's the lingo we used back then! Listen to the group doing My Prayer, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, and Where. Tony Williams left the group in 1960 and could never be equally replaced. No other R&B lead singer could match his voice or even come close, with the single possible exception of Jackie Wilson.
Twilight TIME......is one of their best.....they do have other songs featuring other group members singing lead...."YOU'LL NEVER KNOW" and "ROLL WITH ME HENRY" !!!!
You've got an ear for great music. That's appreciated in more ways than you know. Love your videos! Keep on the road to adventures in your thirst for new music
Sonny Turner was their lead after Tony Williams left. But no one could match Williams. All the original members are gone. "My Prayer" and "Where" by the Platters. Go for it!
With respect also for the others in the group, Tony Williams was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. RIP. Check out 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' and 'Twilight Time'.
No click track. No auto-tune. No Pro Tools. Hardly any post-production to speak of. What you are hearing on that recording is simply a man singing his ass off. That was the only way to do it back then. It seems like this particular version was lip-synced to the original studio recording for TV, but it's not like they couldn't actually sing that shit. If you're going down this path, you need some Sam Cooke, you need some Jackie Wilson, and you absolutely need some Otis Redding.
Also, this was not pantomime or lip syncing. What you hear is what they are singing. Condenser mics and one shot at it. There was no "take-two's" back then. Especially and most unfortunately, for the African American. They came in through the kitchen and left through the kitchen. They were given minimal time to prepare and to exit. But that's all we needed to understand their greatness in the world of music
Try Shirley Bassey; like Tom Jones she's from Wales (Nigerian father) aged 65 in 2002 singing Diamonds are Forever and Goldinger on TV. Oh and with comedian Les Dawson on his show in 1989- comic banter, a little duet and her singing I Am What I Am. Nat King Cole that marvellous crooner e.g When I Fall in Love.

Sam. Cooke. Youngblood NEEDS him some Sam Cooke.

They are all gone, but it's up to us to keep them and the music alive.
That song is from 1955. Yes, The Platters do have more fine songs. I would do "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" next, but other good ones are "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", and "The Magic Touch".
I love you how you research and check your phone because that means you are really interested in knowing more. Love that!

Thank you!!!
They're all dead. But their voices live on. Check out the b&w youtube footage of the great Jackie Wilson singing "Danny Boy." It will blow your mind.
I was waiting for that high note LOL. Wow they are so smooth, and like you say no crazy hand motions, just talent talent talent.
Please give a listen to SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES and MY PRAYER. All of The Platters songs were great, but these two will really touch your heart.💜💜
I saw hem at the Avalon. After they did "Pretender", Tony shouted : "What Time is it?"
The audience responded........"It's Twilight Time."
Hey Twon!! Love me some Platters! Good to see you❤️🔥🎹
Twilight TIME......is one of their best.....they do have other songs featuring other group members singing lead...."YOU'LL NEVER KNOW" and "ROLL WITH ME HENRY" !!!!
Try the Corsairs "Smokey Places". Also I see that the Platters, Coasters, and Drifters (surviving members) have a concert in LA, CA June 2022.
So much great talent back in the day and brings back memories.
Thay are still my favorites. The best music was from the 50s , 60s .i am 80 years old . This music still sends me❤❤❤❤
Flippin perfection.
You've got an ear for great music. That's appreciated in more ways than you know. Love your videos! Keep on the road to adventures in your thirst for new music

They sing great. Thanks for the reaction Twon.
I love their smooth voices!
They will always be with us long as we pass them along. My dad played them for me, and I have made sure to pass them to my son.
With respect also for the others in the group, Tony Williams was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. RIP. Check out 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' and 'Twilight Time'.

It’s called TALENT and the Platters had it all. Unfortunately all of them are gone now.
Tony Williams singing was mind blowing !
That's why we old folks say, there is singing, today's singers and our sangers.
It was released in 1955.

You're great

Lee Moses, Bad girl
commentary! Sonny Turner was in a new version of the platters on the 60s! He was the lead singer.
Please do a reaction video on Tommy Edwards It's all in the game.
Do sincerely by the platters
Do smoke gets in your eyes!
I believe this was lip synced, as it sounds just like the studio version. Which would explain how they're able to seem motionless.
Please do
The Platters
Song Name: He's Mine

where is the Doo Wop .....................................................................................
