The Platters - Remember When

- The Platters started out as a Los Angeles-based doo wop group with little identity of their own to make them stand out from the pack. They made their first records for Federal, a subsidiary of Cincinnati's King Records. These early sides don't sound anything like the better-known sides that would eventually emerge from this group, instead merely aping the current R&B trends and styles of the day. What changed their fortunes can be reduced down to one very important name: their mentor, manager, producer, songwriter, and vocal coach, Buck Ram. Ram took what many would say were a run-of-the-mill R&B doo wop vocal group and turned them into stars and one of the most enduring and lucrative groups of all time. By 1954, Ram was already running a talent agency in Los Angeles, writing and arranging for publisher Mills Music, managing the Three Suns -- a pop group with some success -- and working with his protégés, the Penguins. The Platters seemed like a good addition to his stable. After getting them out of their Federal contract, Ram placed them with the burgeoning national independent label Mercury Records (at the same time he brought over the Penguins following their success with "Earth Angel"), automatically getting them into pop markets through the label's distribution contacts alone. Then Ram started honing in on the group's strengths and weaknesses. The first thing he did was put the lead vocal status squarely on the shoulders of lead tenor Tony Williams. Williams' emoting power was turned up full blast with the group (now augmented with Zola Taylor from Shirley Gunter & the Queens) working as very well-structured vocal support framing his every note. With Ram's pop songwriting classics as their musical palette, the group quickly became a pop and R&B success, eventually earning the distinction of being the first black act of the era to top the pop charts. Considered the most romantic of all the doo wop groups (that is, the ultimate in "make out music"), hit after hit came tumbling forth in a seemingly effortless manner: "Only You," "The Great Pretender," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Harbor Lights," all of them establishing the Platters as the classiest of all. Williams struck out on his own in 1961 and, by the decade's end, the group had disbanded with various members starting up their own version of the Platters. This bit of franchising now extends into the present day, with an estimated 125 sanctioned versions of "the original Platters" out on the oldies show circuit. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

My father was born in 1930 and when I was a child he often spoke to me about the Platters because he loved their music very much (I was born later, in 1976) He died in 2011... Every note of the Platters' music is a masterpiece!
I am almost 75 years old and this song was popular when I first fell in love. I didn't marry him, but when I hear this song, I still have those same feelings. It takes me back to that place and time. I love this song and all the songs by the Platters. Their music was magic to me at a very special time in my life that I can never forget.
same way with me, loved him but we never married, now in touch and we remember when we were young and listed to all their songs. You never forget your first love,
So, it never ends...

So beutifull. Geoff steele 76 now. I remember the platters from the 50 s. Solid gold group. In 1957. I heard the platters lived at portarlinton. Victoria. The beging of my love all rock n roll. Remember when we were young. And the juke box fan tails. Sweets hearts icecreams. The sputnick. At of the platters gold hits. Harmy. Pure. Gold😊😊😊😊😊❤
the era of platters with tony williams as the lead singer is the best, no one can replace i'm so sad they're all gone but the memories they left was very precious
I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
No body sings like you. Wow, awesome!!!!

You are correct. I love the Platters then an Now.Im glad it is being plad because it brings back memories and a very special time in my life .I'm now 78.
Tony williams voice is like a
Cold ice so clear and so beautiful voice.
What a rare exceptional voice Tony had.
I remember my dad working in the U.S. in the early 60's, and when he came home he brought records from the Platters and other American singers. We played the Platters record constantly, we just love all the songs. My family moved to the U.S. a few years later and we've been a big fan until this day. I play the Platters on Alexa now, their songs bring back a lot of good memories. Dad passed away during Covid-19 epidemic but that day in the early 60's was absolutely magical. I've been a fan of the Platters ever since.
The black groups knew how to sing love songs from the heart, I am a Sinatra guy but black groups of the 40's 50's and early 60's were the best
I can't remember when I didn't love The Platters. Great song.
The lead singer Mr. Tony Williams helped make the Platters one of the very Best Ballard 50-60's singing groups of all time.
His voice touched the Hearts of Millions, and I will never forget the Love through his songs as well as his Voice, that will live on, to time indefinite. IMO
I WAS 15 IN '55 AND ALMOST EVERYONE LOVED THE PLATTERS , NO EXCEPTIONS . IT WAS TRULY A ONE OF A KIND HARMONY GROUP , AND I THINK WE ALL SENSED THIS BACK THEN.

Incomparable

My prayer
Tony was divine
The Platters were undoubtedly were one of the greatest doo wop groups from the 50's and early sixties, in part by having such a great lead singer, Tony Williams. I'm thankful for RUclips because they are able to bring back these great groups for us to still enjoy some 60 years after their fame got started.
It was NOT, doo wop, when we heard that record come out, nor was any of the Platters records called 'doo wop', in the day. I know, I bought 'Great Pretender', when it came out, about 1956. I loved their style, it was.....cool.
Thanks, for sharing your comment

Original Platters got together for a last world tour in 65 or 66, and I got to see them. I was a very young newly wed living in Hong Kong. Tony Williams and Zola were both there. Such a memory.
Hello Georgie
my dad wouldn't let me spend the money for a transistor radio but I was able to get a crystal radio. don't know if you remember them. it worked great with an ear piece. went to sleep many a night listening to this kind of music. what I wouldn't give to just spend 24 hours back then again. i'd die a happy man.
Transistor radios along with the VS300 batteries were quite expensive back then. I built my firs crystal radio when I was 12. KUDE of Oceanside CA. was a good rock station back in the day. I always enjoy radio much more than I do TV.
One of my all time favorites of many. Love the way Tony holds that right hand. The greatest group of all time. I could listen to Tony sing everyday, and I sometimes do with my records, CD's and tapes. I grew up with listening to The Platters.
Nostalgia +++. To have access to these songs is to remember the joy they brought to us when they were first recorded. So naïve, so hopeful, and so convinced that romantic love lasts forever. Congrats to those who made that their reality!

The oldies are the best.
The Platters (the original) for ever.
yessssssssss.........class......
Tony Williams was the best male singer of all time which made The Platters the best vocal group ever.
Just saw this and remembered my first love. She had a record player and one album, "Platters Greatest Hits." We listened over and over and never got tiered of it. Every time I hear one the song I have to stop and listen. That was over sixty years ago. It's part of the sound track of my life. All the Platters are gone but thank you just the same.
I am 90 years old and I remember.
One of my parents' favorite groups. Had long playing records of Platters, grew up with them, and loved them. Thanks to my parents who introduced music to me and to my siblings at our very young age.❤️
To future generations NEVER LET THIS Song DIE in the future of are life's ☺️

What a thrill, The Platters, Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline, Marty Robins and Hank Williams! All in one setting! Although I am a lyric Operatic Tenor, these songs touched my heart! Thank you!

Nothing on offer today can ever match this!!!!!
I'm '67 baby and was brought up with the Platters playing on mums record player.
Now my '97 baby is tappin' her feet to the same rhythms.
That is awesome. Something about that is just so fitting, isn't it?
I'm 20 years old, I heard this song the other day while having a glass of wine at a café terrace at the end of a summer day... I fell in love this is gold!

We were very fortunate to be in our younger years because we were able to enjoy this type of music and those great groups…. ❤
What a band, I used to dance every saturday all their musics and the girls love them too, specially his great Tenor Tony Williams, wonderful time, group & music!
The absolute epitome of beautiful music!
I share your sentiment
Enchanting Grace!
Michael; I am 72 and I also feel the same; these are unforgettables group and songs.
One of my dear late Mothers' favorite groups. Hearing them always brings a smile and makes me think of her. They really were beautiful singers
This was released in 1959. Needed to come out in 57, would have kept their string of top ten and higher tunes intact. Late 55 to 57 this group was "Heaven on Earth" No one could touch them. By the end of the 50's music was changing though. But no one will ever touch this group in so many ways. The original Platters I mean.
The rap we see on tv and radio is what is popular now. What else can we use to judge an era? And as far as the Platters go they were very famous in their day. Their day is gone and they're being forgotten. Similar white groups are also being forgotten.
We bring you one of the outstanding Rock and Roll acts in the nation: The Platters!
" THE WORDS OF THE PLATTERS MAKE MY HEART SMILE..ALWAYS "
I had a Brother-in-law who introduced me to this music at an early age. Sadly my Brother-in-law is gone but the music lives on.
I love this song very much ....REST IN PEACE tony williamns n zola taylor....im now 74 year of age ..still listening to your endlless music....
I grew up listening to the platters my father was a great fan when I hear it today reminds me of my childhood and my father
My mom (RIP) loved this group. Awesome voices...music like this will never be replaced! ❤
I have 18 years old, but i love the music of the platters, i listen their music and i fell calm and happy, its an excellent music, Greetings from Colombia

Agree, The Platters were the best group ever...
The Beatles are nowhere when you listen to this. This is the real thing.
This was "Our Song" when my wife, Connie, and I were dating in the sixties. We were married 48 yrs before she passed May 17, 2016. I had searched for it before to play it for her, but couldn't find it before she died. I heard it again today for the first time in many years and it brought both joy and sorrow to my heart. Tears of sorrow and tears of remembrance.
Louis Wright wow nice that Khakhakha 😂😂😂

Brilliant Tony Williams...what a voice
Even today there is no one to match the voice of Tony Williams, my truly favourite group since the 50s🎉
Wonderful!! Thank you for rescuing this unforgettable classic.
my high school days,1957. my fav.singers THE PLATTERS.
Tony Williams - one of the sweetest voices - ever.
Music that keeps fermenting like good old wine.
As beautiful today as it was then. An incomparable voice.
The Platters.
Oh, the memories... Tony Williams had truly magnificent voice!
They came to my homeland, Iceland, in the late seventies but I think there were only 2 or 3 of the original members left of the group, Herb Rees and Regina Coco the daughter of the one of the originals. But they thrilled the audiences with their songs I was only around 30 years old, I brought my parents with me and they said "this is on of the greatest musical event in our life" Love their music.
Wonderful wonderful voice.
Normurr
Fantastic - I`m 72 and this and most of the Platters songs were in my time. I met and danced with my wife to The Platters.
Fantastic memories, fantastic group.
Fantastic harmony. Can't think of a group today that can match the Platters.
Don't think Tony ever needed the "Platters" ...his voice is simply amazing! It's perfect really!
but the songs, it wouldn't be perfect without the "Platters" would it?
my husband sent this song to me! i love it and him 53 years married!!
I am lying here on the bed and singing bass to this video. 63 and I remember this song too.
My mother loved the Platters and made me a convert. One of the all-time recognizable voices. Doo-wop was given birth (falsettos and all) by the Platters. Great tune!
you can't beat this music love em all
So do I.
Always reminds me of the the goods days of the 1950s and early 1960s, when it was a decent country.
,
What a beautiful voice..none can match him today.
"Remember When". Perfect song to describe my beautiful memory.
Love their music love them all what else can be said the greatest group ever x
Great,great singing group.
They sang to my daughter (in an elevator !) back in thde 70's.
A memory I treasure.
I wore out the jukebox with this song back in the day. Was lamenting the loss of my first love. When we first starting going steady the song "Twilight Time" celebrated the beauty of our new relationship. Wow! Those were the days, alright. What great memories! I am so fortunate to have grown up in that era. Class of '62.
The Platters elegant and great music. Beautiful music
The Platters have little identity? Every magnificent sound they they make is Platters all through, they are Doo-Wop.
The Great Tony Williams.Brilliant
I wished they were still alive. Simply the best.
Tony Williams was a true icon, what a voice.
