Those old school lifters always give the best gym advice. Last week I came across a 75 year old man who bench pressed over 250 lbs. He told that he trained in this environment. No bs in the old-school gyms.
Glad I found this channel earlier this year. Down to 212lbs from 250lbs at the start of the year, and started lifting again for the first time since 2009. I don't remember all of my old numbers, but I do know I've surpassed some of my old PRs from back then.

The old gym reminds me of my old high school gym back in the day. It was this small rusty gym with cage walls attached to the side of an equally old concrete basketball court. Most of the equipment were more than 20 years old and It was always surprising to me how they never broke despite being super rusty and shaky. I definitely enjoy the modern machines and other gym features that helps with convenience and isolation but fun-wise I definitely had way more fun in that small old gym. Something about utilizing the entire court like bleachers and etc. combined with old equipment to form different workouts was so enjoyable.

I dunno how tall he is, but 200 might still be lean for him. I think the sentiment still stands though because he doesn't stress about eating something "unhealthy" now and then.
He's no where near the average 200. He's jacked and leaner than most people that's why he doesn't care too much about junk food cause his bf is in check and he works out.....also the rest of his diet from other vids you can tell is pretty good. like he's leaner than most people who weigh 170-180
Such an honor training at such an inspiring, culturally significant gym. I love crappy old gyms. So much more atmosphere and raw energy than the new ultra fitness palaces that open up these days.
Went to a Planet Fitsucks with a friend who goes there and I wouldn't go if they paid me. I love working out on my concrete patio in Central Florida year around with my simple bench, squat rack, bar, plates ,dumbbells and a 1 pulley cable pull down.
I agree man, the gym I go to is literally inside a basement and all the plates are pure iron, there's like rubber on a few select workout machines but that's it. The place is so crappy and totally in need of repairs, I accidentally stepped on something I wasn't supposed to and it like my foot fell through into a water drain or something like that. The owner was cool so I didn't get charged. Anyway the main reason I go, aside from it being cheap as all hell, is that it's straightforward and it has a real sense of community, I know everyone who goes there and everyone who goes is chill and it's a consistent cast of guys every day who go there to workout, chat a bit, go home it's awesome. There's also a bakery that opened right by it that serves some of the worst treats ever but if you're an energy starved lifter, shitty pudding goes hard.
The old gym is like a garage gym for people on a tight budget. I would actually work out there because its not intimidating and you will get a very good work out as well. Its nice to have all the newer machines and dumbells and stuff but you still need to do the basics to get strong and ripped.
While I can certainly appreciate the nostalgia trip offered by the old gym, there are local/chain gyms (ex. XSport Fitness) that offer most of what the expensive gym offers (all brand new equipment from Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, Technogym, Hoist, Precor, etc.) for $30-40 per month. I would never go for a monthly membership at the oldest gym, but I would definitely pay the inflation-adjusted price for a daily trip back in time a few times a month or year, just to remind myself of how/where it all started. I don't get the hate on Technogym either. It's great stuff and integrates well into a "modern gym" for the "modern lifter." I believe you can even trick them out with LCD screens that keep track of the weight, rep count, rep tempo, etc. Same with Hoist, which I never encountered until they remodeled my current gym. Their machines are an entirely new thing IMO, especially the RS-1101 seated dip. Such a comfortable ROM.
Eh I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a budget gym. I mean there’s places like planet fitness or crunch where you can get access to all the latest equipment for anywhere from $10-$30 a month, depending on the membership you choose. I’m sure it’s a cool experience but no way am I paying $40 a month to workout there.
I do calisthenics, but I would personally use the old gym. It's straightforward. No bs,do your business,no fancy equipment, just pure metal to build strength.
When I studied in Antwerp, I used to frequent a gym like the first one. In the middle of the red light district, above a club, filled with equipment from the 70s. Loved it. You can't recreate that authentic old school gym vibe.
I feel like those older gyms are simply just better for someone who's starting out. No overwhelming machines, just basic equipment that you could have at home but you don't need to buy. As a starter, when I entered my first commercial gym, it was overwhelming, I didn't know where to start or what to do first, it scared me off for a bit.
Will, I am 41 from Houston. I am 3 months in on my transformation. I started at 6ft 130. Now, just on push-ups, eating better, collagen peptides for my joints, and 2x 20lb dumbells, I'm up to 175lbs. I looked sick. Now, 45 lbs later, I look healthy. The workouts have made all my clothes not fit anymore (IN A GOOD WAY.) My t-shirt arms cut off circulation. You inspire me. Your aesthetic is basically exactly what I'm going for. We are built very similarly. All the best, as you continue to inspire others.
The new gym looks fancy as heaven. I would love to visit it. However, the old school gym has the advantage of forcing gym goers to push harder. Like Will said, putting the weights back on the rack is just as hard as the workout itself. I like the sound of that. Now that sounds like a gym that'll make you way stronger than newer gyms.
Another great video, Will! I just found you this past week and I love all the fitness/diet stuff but honestly what I’ve taken the most from your content is confidence. Approaching random people and talking to everyone around you like you’ve known them your whole life - as an introvert it’s inspiring!
12:12 yeah TechnoGym looks cool and clean inside of the gym, but at the gym I work at, the issue is maintenance. TechnoGym is consistently the least durable brand at the gym. Parts are constantly having to be replaced and there is regular “preventive maintenance” for them. Personally, I prefer Hammer Strength anyways.
The old gym reminds me of a gym I started in out in New York. It was just an old grunt gym at 17 years old I was benching 345lbs in that old room. Good times!
Just wanted to point out that the new gym has a monthly membership fee of $142, thats the lowered christams price at the lowest memebership level. At the best membership the usuall price is $280 per month + a $300 starting fee. Thats insane.
its expensive because it has a ton of amenities, and it keeps the riff raff out, you dont have to worry about curls int he squatrack guy hoarding every single dumbbell
@@sniperjared if I had to pay over 40usd for a gym that has technogym equipment for the vist majority of their machines. I would feel like im getting ripped off, because essentially i would be. Technogym is literally bottom of the barrel worst quality commercial gym equipment. On par qith buying gourmet food at fucking lidl
Will, just wanted to say you are such an amazing content creator. Everything you put out is so good and well thought out, you can really tell how much effort you put in. Seriously you should be super proud of what you've accomplished, and how many lives you've touched with your content! Keep killing it Will!
Love the gym vs gym videos. It's cool to see all the different equipment and amenities at each one. And Will makes it just that much more entertaining!
Imagine the bros back in 1913. Cruising to the gym in the horse and buggy, a cocaine and amphetamine laced soda for pre-workout, training in your finest leotard, then back home for a post workout meal of gruel and bread. Then a 14 hour shift down the mine.
All jokes throughout the video, but at the end of the day Will always has a lesson to teach us about not just your physical but mental health. He is truly a legend.
Just found your channel about a month ago and for some unknown reason it got me motivated to work out and eat nutritious again. Due to my crazy metabolism i dropped back to ~143 lbs within a couple years, now im already back at 162 lbs! Just wanna let you know you're unique Will, nothing else motivated me to get my ass up for a really long time like your content does.
@@fuadahmed6060 nah it sucks. Went from 105 to 135 bulking hard, decided to chill a bit and not stuff my face with food all day and dropped back down to 125 in a few months.
I killed my metabolism 2 years back by going from 290 pounds to 164 in like 5 months of starvation. And I gained back 50 pounds bcoz I was craving a lot of shit after I lost all that weight without going to the gym. Btw I looked like a grandma with saggy skin everywhere. Now I have learnt the hard way, been going to the gym doing weight for a year with cardio and some boxing training. I came down to around 190 pounds but look way better than before.
The oldest continuously running gym in America is the Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club (open since 1903)! You should check it out sometime, it’s by far the strangest gym I’ve ever seen.
I know a guy who took over an old school gym that was made quite a while back on my town chariton in iowa. Everything is really old. All cast iron plates. Dumbbells are heavier than labeled. Posters. You'd use an actual key to get inside
Will has literally changed my thoughts about fitness goals rather than goal its a journey life long to progress, not stressing much about how much inches you’ve added to your bicep
And also, even if you do focus on physique, there's muscles that you can put on quickly which are actually quite soft and look like you've done it in the gym, and then there's firm muscles and overall strength and fitness. One is for the "look", the other is a lifelong commitment to health. :)
@@Bradlyp1 I was very impatient but I have learnt to the love the process more than the results. Once u reach ur goal it might become a little bit boring or stressful u not moving forward, but when u love the process, u gonna enjoy it every single day.
honestly i love the retro gym equipment it d be a really cool idea to do a complete retro body building work out with someone who has the equipment and the experience
Such an amazing video! I love the honesty in this one. Great stuff man. Question... have you ever tried Next Level Diet? I got a muscle-building meal plan from them, and I love it.
With regards to Techno Gym, I think their plate-loaded machines are much better than their weight stack machines, and I even prefer them in a lot of cases to their equivalent in Hammer Strength plate loaded. Their incline press and overhead press are wonderful.
We need more gyms like this. Nothing fancy, no silly trend stuff, phones or whatnot, just pure metal and pure muscle. No filler stuff as I like to call it. PS: I meant the old one, the new one looks wrong. Just wrong. Nothing screams muscle, it screams comfort and "nice". "Usually there's four people waiting for racks" - That's bad.
11:16 that is an Uppercut heavybag, it's used to throw uppercuts because the traditional heavybag (like the one in the old gym) doesn't have the round belly to throw uppercuts and looping body shots into, if anyone's wondering.
I love both types of gyms. You never know what you're going to find that may bring you a new result. I love finding equipment that I've never used before. New gyms can be especially exciting for that reason. Old gyms can be cool like that too. You never know what lost in time miracle (or bullshit) equipment you'll find. I also love the gyms that are falling apart. They can be a great adventure in themselves. I used to go to a gashouse pit where I would check the squat rack for stability. If it wobbled too much, I brought in my toolbox and tightened all of the supports before I started lifting. They actually waived my gym dues for the last ten months they were open. They thought it was awesome that a member cared about their equipment that much. I went to another place where I always kept hex keys for the dumbbells, and after a while other members knew to come to me when they were loose. Places like that a lot of fun.
Thanks for the great videos. The second gym is definitely not for me. Maybe I am alone but I don't want my gym to feel or look like a spa retreat. I need it to feel like I am entering a place purpose built to make me uncomfortable.
Same here. I used to work out in a gym in an old converted warehouse/factory, with expose beams with people's signatures from 100 years before. The vibe was SO much better. Much more "I'm here to work hard and sometimes chat with the people who work out here too" instead of, "OMG where did you get the newest (insert designer brand piece of clothing) let's talk about it over a $15 cup of cucumber water and post cute selfies showing how our booties look in our outfits on Instagram!"
If it's heavy, it's good to use lol. Something tells me the old school weights were heavier. I mean- Look at Steve Reeves and John Hackenschmidt or even Herman Goener. I love your content. I don't know why I never subscribed before and your name gets echoed in A LOT of RUclips videos. Maybe this is crazy to say, but we're alike. People love my physique, but it doesn't look like I'm shredded and I'm really strong. Like you- My PRs are up there and some people just think I'm a beginner, but I have been working out for 15 years. Finally- someone on RUclips who has the same body type as me and makes me feel like I should appreciate my image, more. You're entertaining to watch and not a muscle head junkie. Make us nattys proud!
In my parents' little country town there is small gym that reeks 90s bodybuilding. The place is probably 1000 square feet with a 10-feet-high roof, an uneven floor and an insane amount of machines cramed into such a little space. To this day it's the best gym I've ever been to and the one where I made the most progress.
Will thank you for the hard work and your amazing videos! One of the most motivational fitness influencers. You are one of those men who changed my life, thanks to you I started working on my body, also I am working in food delivery for about a year, and thanks to u I finally made a channel about fitness and home workouts, now feel like I'm where I should be, working hard and hope one day my 200 subs will become 200k and I'll quit delivery and will be able to help people like you helped me 💪

As a starter, when I entered my first commercial gym, it was overwhelming, I didn't know where to start or what to do first, it scared me off for a bit.
Will never fails to make us laugh this guy can make up jokes on the spot 😂

Yup, and love how he called out turkesterone haha
Bro when he said "i love taking on a mystery load" 😂😂
My favorite thing about Will is just how nice and genuine he his. We need more Wills on the internet and less trolls
Can’t get over the quality of this video. Guy has attention to detail. Great edits and production all around.
I genuinely laughed out loud at so many moments in this video. Thank you for adding brightness & humour to our days. Absolutely crushing it!
"Do what you love, and do it at your own pace." Very nice quote there Will.
Will is so chill it makes him so likeable 👍🏻 props to this channel it’s awesome
My first gym had this old school vibe. It underwent renovations and modernised, and the vibe wasn't the same.
This is absolute top tier humor. Will has a definite future as a stand up comedian. Deadpan and wickedly funny.
Another great video, Will! I just found you this past week and I love all the fitness/diet stuff but honestly what I’ve taken the most from your content is confidence. Approaching random people and talking to everyone around you like you’ve known them your whole life - as an introvert it’s inspiring!
If you haven't yet, be sure to check out his older videos as well, especially the ones with Ollie. :)
Will’s videos hit just right everytime 😂
Wills content is just so creative yet simple and enjoyable
16:24 I really didn't expect The Binding of Isaac music to be here.
i was looking for this comment
Me too lol XD@@icebrrr1546
12:12 yeah TechnoGym looks cool and clean inside of the gym, but at the gym I work at, the issue is maintenance. TechnoGym is consistently the least durable brand at the gym. Parts are constantly having to be replaced and there is regular “preventive maintenance” for them. Personally, I prefer Hammer Strength anyways.
The old gym reminds me of a gym I started in out in New York. It was just an old grunt gym at 17 years old I was benching 345lbs in that old room. Good times!
And you were big, no need for fancy stuff
And I'm sure the weight was more than 345lbs
Just wanted to point out that the new gym has a monthly membership fee of $142, thats the lowered christams price at the lowest memebership level. At the best membership the usuall price is $280 per month + a $300 starting fee. Thats insane.
Saport me gyzz
300 cad to use technogym 💀
It's focussed on the corporate gang.
its expensive because it has a ton of amenities, and it keeps the riff raff out, you dont have to worry about curls int he squatrack guy hoarding every single dumbbell
@@sniperjared if I had to pay over 40usd for a gym that has technogym equipment for the vist majority of their machines. I would feel like im getting ripped off, because essentially i would be.
Technogym is literally bottom of the barrel worst quality commercial gym equipment. On par qith buying gourmet food at fucking lidl
this video really feel like a big step up in quality fro the older things i used to watch. great work!
Every part of the video looks good quality and the basement 1 music at the end is the cherry on the cake. Love the vids!
☝️🎁🎁👈👆...
this guy has a realistic natty physique, good lifts and lots of humour, probs my fav youtuber
If that’s a natty physique, I’m the pope. Have you seen those trapezius muscles?
@@TheCodik my point being, he looks big because his body fat isnt low, no offence ofc, so he fills the shirt up
Your videos are so much more than entertainment, they share stories. Thanks for that Will. 👊
It was so nice of the old school gym guys, very friendly! i am definitely going there once
Loved the wooden racks for all the dumbells and bar bells. You could make a whole modern gym with wooden racks like that, it'd be pretty nice.
Imagine the bros back in 1913. Cruising to the gym in the horse and buggy, a cocaine and amphetamine laced soda for pre-workout, training in your finest leotard, then back home for a post workout meal of gruel and bread. Then a 14 hour shift down the mine.
15:26 "fucking closed" 🤣🤣
I don't know how to explain it but your videos give off the same energy as Ryan Trahan videos
16:26 That Antibirth OST caught be SO off guard what the hell. Really grea taste in music, props to the editor!
All jokes throughout the video, but at the end of the day Will always has a lesson to teach us about not just your physical but mental health. He is truly a legend.
4:22 the look on that guy's face when he said "yeah" tells me he has firsthand experience
💀
That transition at 16:38 was amazing
Facts
the mic quality blew me away
It gave me an ad🤦
Binding of Isaac music lol
This is one of the most fascinating videos I've watched in a long time
That old gym is cleaner and better taken care of than most inner city big box gyms.
Be grateful u have a crazy metabolism. Lots of people struggle with the metabolism issue and it sucks when doing a cut.
@@fuadahmed6060 nah it sucks. Went from 105 to 135 bulking hard, decided to chill a bit and not stuff my face with food all day and dropped back down to 125 in a few months.
@@Jc-go3mz I would take a lean frame any day of the week over a chubby one with a gut sticking out.
Wow, that old gym was just awesome, a mix between a museum and a boutique. Thank you for making this video :)
So much history in these older gyms.. makes you wanna be apart of it as you build yourself..
@@celticlass8573 love the perspective there ;)
@@Bradlyp1 I was very impatient but I have learnt to the love the process more than the results. Once u reach ur goal it might become a little bit boring or stressful u not moving forward, but when u love the process, u gonna enjoy it every single day.
honestly i love the retro gym equipment it d be a really cool idea to do a complete retro body building work out with someone who has the equipment and the experience
8:00 I was not expecting Slay the Spire OST in this kind of video LMAO
Fantastic. I would love to train in that old gym. What a time capsule.
the ending was kinda inspirational. That was awesome to bring the video to a close like that.
Yeah agreed that was hella
I'm almost 50 y.o. and I sincerely enjoy watching your videos very much.
Good on ya mate!
Me too. Lately, Gold’s gym has felt too modern for me. I need to find a gym that feels like the era I grew up in (70’s/80’s).
Prefer the old looking rough gyms bcoz of the weights, they are always heavier than this modern weights definitely.
I prefer gyms that were built in the 1700’s
Using stones and rocks is the way to go
@@freshchoice5177 That works too. :)
I like the music choices :) Some hidden gems
the mario 3-d world soundtrack in the back tho, love your vids man
In my parents' little country town there is small gym that reeks 90s bodybuilding.
You are one of those men who changed my life, thanks to you I started working on my body, also I am working in food delivery for about a year, and thanks to u I finally made a channel about fitness and home workouts, now feel like I'm where I should be, working hard and hope one day my 200 subs will become 200k and I'll quit delivery and will be able to help people like you helped me 💪
With the oldest gym, it'd be neat to see Will try some of the "Oldest Workouts" like Sandow or Professor Attila.
14:56 "Hol up just a second, gotta clean the lens"
La palestra più nuova ti da una accoglienza infinita, è come se fosse una casa gigante e potrei stare tutto il giorno ad allenarmi e divertirmi lì dentro
He is Him. Another video that doesn't miss. Keep up the Great content.
Side note:
Will, you should do a tour of each Province and State. "THE WILL TENNYSON NA TOUR"
Wait $2.50/day in 1913? That must be adjusted for inflation...otherwise that's around $2,250/month in 2024!
Yeah I feel like he said that meaning when he joined
I doubt they were working out every day
Slow and smart at the same time. People usually would work out 3 times a week. Not daily. And u pay omly when you train
Oh cool! That gym is around the corner from me...I've passed it so many times and never even knew. Great video as always Will!

The vibe of the gym really makes a difference for me, that’s why I’d go with the old gym
11:55 Playing "Ib" music caught me off guard, but it's a welcome one. Other than that, good video! I'm starting to work out, so it's motivating
Lol why is there slay the spire music playing at 8:13 hahah Will the gamer :P

excellent video man, and seriously prompts to your camera, excellent work and comedic timing
11:56 Shoutout to the editor for the Ib track. Love it very much.
