Hi, Peter. I'm a big fan. Thanks for sharing your experience. The Action 5 Pro definitely surprised me in terms of low light shooting and as far as I can tell, DJI is going to release the bitrate firmware sooner than later.
Hey Roma, I live in your corner of your world too, over in Vietnam and ride a lot of motorcycle. I got the Action 5 but so far have been disappointed in the stabilization when mounted to the handlebar of my bike. Granted, I ride a big single cylinder bike that shakes a lot, but I was surprised the action 5 couldn’t handle it. My insta360 GO3, which is worse in every other way, handles being mounted to the handlebar just fine. Do you have any experience with this? Just wondering if I somehow got a faulty unit, but I doubt it.
@@Romafedorov to be fair it was in low light (but not night) conditions in night mode so I think the shutter speed was slow. I rebated again in normal video mode and day light and it one video was fine, but another, which was started indoors as I walked outside and got on the bike was not. I understand now it needs a higher shutter speed for stabilization to work, but is it able to adjust shutter speed while filming automatically? The video that started indoors and ended ok the bike with poor stabilization suggests not. Sorry, I’m a beginner with all things video, but I learn a lot from your videos.
5:49 Gopro did exactly the same with their Hero12, but no one talked about that. On the Hero12 they most probably decreased bitrate to decrease CPU processing. And a decrease in in CPU processing should result in less heat generation, thus a longer runtime before thermal overheating and a longer recording on a full battery charge.
Awesome honest review. I just picked up my first action camera, being the Action 5 Pro. Happy with it so far. I'm still learning, should the mic for voice control commands struggle to hear each command, finding it not always responding to take photo. Using this as a travel family camera, so will take photos along with videos. Hopefully, they will be good enough. I didn't know the pocket 3 was the better Camera , so fingers crossed this is good enough. Also ive attempted to unscew the lens, i can't do it, it feels stuck. Should it be so tight? Is there a technique, just twist anti clockwise or is there a trick to it?
If you use the action camera as a professional, meaning you earn money from it, then it's worth it. If you use the action camera for occasional filming for yourself, then it's clearly not worth it. The differences are not major, but all together, they make it worth switching to the new camera, provided you film and this brings you money so that it is worth the investment.
Thank you for your review. How does the image quality compare to the Pocket 3? What are the best settings on both camera’s (in normal colour) in order to obtain a simulair image (exposure, colour)? Action 5 and Pocket 3 are complementary camera’s in use, so both should output footage that match, to be able to use it together in one project.
Thanks for raising the noise reduction / mushy shadows issue as well as the bitrate. For detailed fast motion scenes the bitrate cap is especially problematic, and a regression over the 4. A firmware update can't come soon enough.
As always, super exact and helpful, Roma, thank you! Hope to see a good detailed low-light review from you soon =)) (I mean not the sh.tty artificial oversharpened Supernight mode but the regular one)
Hi Roma, great review, but do you or anyone here experience overheating problem? I tried all setting even the lowest 1080p 30/RS. it started overheating after just 20 minutes. Can someone please advice.
The new battery works with the Action 4. It’s the same size as before, with no changes except for the capacity, so you’ll naturally get longer recording times.
Help me understand, people are saying the Action 5 outshines the Action 4 in image quality.. How so, when these same people are complaining about the bit rate about the Action 5.. Anyone who knows about bit rate , should know the lower bit rate, has a huge effect on image quality. So yes DJI Action 5 has made some upgrades, the most important appeal to consumers is the image quality. So the lower bit rate helped in longer battery life, and over heating, due to lower bit rate in transferring file.. So think again if you or still think A5, has better quality then A4
I wasn’t specifically saying anyone in particular. I myself own the DJI Osmo Action 3, along with the Ace Pro. I was excited when they announced the launch of the Action 5, to be sadly disappointed. If it's the same price go for the A5 Pro. Just don't forget to lower the noise reduction and texture settings to get the best results. Otherwise, you might want to look into a second hand Action 4.

My 5 Pro was a really tight fit in my SmallRig cage which I used with the Action 4 and Action 3. I think this is because the 5 has a thicker protective coating? My 5 Pro takes up to 5 seconds to start if it's been sitting for several hours. The glass lens cover on the 5 Pro is in fact very slightly bigger than that on the 4, so I took the cover off the 4 and put it on the 5 so I could use lens caps I have. The 5 glass cover was very hard to unscrew. While I'm here, if anyone is interested, to minimise distortion (in my opinion the 4 and 5 warp the image quite badly at the edges in Dewarp compared to the similar GoPro setting), I shoot my 5 at 4:3, RockSteady, Standard Dewarp, and set Divinci Resolve Lens Distortion to -0.100. Then I zoom in to 16:9, etc. This gets me best results.
