Bruce Arnold and his band Orpheus perform their hit single "Can't Find The Time" in late 1969. This lip-synced performance was shot for a television show, which aired in the New England area only weeks after MGM re-released the original single. This was nearly two years after it's first issue.
This second release actually charted higher (Billboard #80). Unfortunately MGM still managed to fumble the promotion and took months to distribute the re-issued single to radio stations. Records show that although "Can't Find The Time" was in heavy rotation on the East Coast and spent weeks on the Top 10 playlists of many radio stations across the country, stations in the Midwest and West Coast did not receive the single in time for their airplays to be added to Billboard's national chart tabulations.
As with the original release in January of '68, the inept promotion department at MGM again mistimed the single's impact and any momentum Orpheus could have gathered from the re-issued single was lost. Several months later, Bruce Arnold disbanded the original Orpheus and hired a new group of musicians which included the legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. Purdie was no stranger to Arnold's music as he was, in fact, the uncredited player on Orpheus' debut album as well as all of their subsequent singles.
Written and arranged by Orpheus frontman, Bruce Arnold, "Can't Find The Time" (a.k.a. "Can't Find The Time To Tell You") is now widely recognized as a timeless classic. Over the last fifty years, it has appeared on countless compilations as well as being featured in both film and television including the 2022 Peter Farrelly film, "The Greatest Beer Run Ever" starring Zac Efron, Russell Crowe and Bill Murray.
"Can't Find The Time" has also been covered by dozens of artists including Rose Colored Glass, The Capris, The Explorers Club and Hootie & The Blowfish. Hootie's version appears in the Farelly Brothers film, "Me, Myself & Irene" starring Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger.

Never gets old
Best song of all time❤
RIP, Bruce. This song will remain a beautiful and timeless classic.
I am now a young 68 but I still feel like I am a young girl again when I hear the first 10 seconds of this song! I have loved from the first time I heard it! I would try to record it from the radio onto tapes that I would rewind thousands of times to rehear it! I tucked it away for a few years but now I have it on my Ipad and ask Alexa to play it over and over! Thank you, Orpheus, for the feeling this song has brought to my life...I can't find the time to tell you what it has meant and will always mean to me
Ok dude, I'm a wee bit younger than you at 59....and love music...and feel like an idiot because I thought this was a Hootine and the Blowfish song.... I LOVE this, the original, fab-U-lous!
I noticed the bongo's this listen!
Check out the same era songs, Sunlight by the Youngbloods and Alabama Rain by Jim Croce.
Beautiful post
I still have my original 45. I have a player in my living room and I played this song over and over. What beautiful memories.
It's 2024 and I still love this song.
A beautiful song... and still is, all these years later.
I can listen to this all day long.
I'm surprised this song didn't even reach the top 10 on the pop charts; Head scratcher.
Me too💞🙌🏾
I am right with you all day and all night. It's a very hypnotic and a really calming song, a real masterpiece.
I just found a CD of their hits! Now i CAN listen to them ALL day!!!
@@smuzoff I just grabbed a copy at savers for two bucks an LP that I actually already have in my collection but I'm not able to access. I'm certain the whole album has the hypnotic effect as I recall first experience in it during the beautiful summer weather!
The bassist, Eric "Snake" Gulliksen, just passed away two days ago (6/4/23), shortly after his 81st birthday. He was a well-loved and very active member of our local music community. An unassuming, intelligent, witty, and friendly gentleman; it was always a pleasure seeing him sharing his talents. A mesmerizing performer, he was also a gifted raconteur. He always shared the best stories about the songs he would play and events in his life relevant to those songs. RIP
I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at “Stings” a local bar and grill in RI a few years ago. I wish I had taken a moment to thank him for this song, which is one of my all time favorites from that era. RIP
RIP, Eric
@mollyturgess3153 I'm so glad Hottie and the blowfish covered this song brings back such great memories.
Beautiful post and thanks for sharing this about the passing of Erik Gullickson.
RIP. One of the great love ballads of the 60’s!
Hey!...Eric was a regular performer at 'Pub on the Park' very pleasant elderly man, looked so different from this video, but this was like over 50 years ago...lol..
Im only 18 years old, but Im so glad my parents showed me the beautiful music they heard, when they where young. I love this song.
@Devon me too. Have you listened to “How Can I Be Sure” by The Rascals ? Also, beautiful.
Great comment. If only the rest of your generation could have an inkling of what's been lost. Back in the sixties it only took three voices, two acoustic guitars and one string bass to produce one top ten hit after another = the immortal Peter, Paul and Mary.
It's not difficult to mass an entire collection of all of it. My record collection is about 10,000 LP's and a couple thousand 45's. Youth are missing a lot if they don't latch on to this wonderful assembly of music. Check out "I Get A Funny Feeling" by The First Edition
Are they also listening to the songs you like today ?
One of the great lost songs of the 60's...should have been a # 1 hit...a classic...
RIP Bruce. I love this song, all your music and always will
Back in '68 ----------when this masterpiece came out on the radio------I was THE only one of all my friends who loved it, & had the 45. -------I took a lot of heat for that. I defended this song ----telling several guys & girls, that in 20--3-&40 years, " Can't Find The Time" would still be a beautIful song., utterly timeless. I was laughed at-----ridiculed------but I KNEW MY MUSIC !! ---------------------------------------wOLFsKY9
Has been my favorite song all my life ,my first concert was Orpheus, at
The Commodore in Lowell MA
You sure do! this song is a Masterpiece, yesterday today and tommrow.
Wolfsky l can relate to where you are coming from . I've had friends & co -workers to make fun of my taste in music too . They failed to see the beauty and longevity in certain songs . This GEM by Orpheus is a prime example . This is a beautiful song .
Grew up in Boston area and always heard this on the radio. This was not a national hit though, inexplicably. I think it only hit #65 or something on Billboard. Unreal, as it is beautiful, if a little unpolished. That's not a putdown, as I like unpolished. It beats "cherish" by the Association, same type of song.
I'm from Boston and when I heard Hootie and the blowfish do this tune, I was reunited with one of my favorite songs from childhood.
This song hits home so hard when you know exactly what he means by "i cant find the time to tell you", and when he says "i look at your pretty face and i fall in love with you everytime i see you".
Wow. I went to college in Cambridge 1965-9. The summer of 1968 was the first one I spent there. The place became my home. And how I remember sitting in Charlie's Kitchen playing this song on the jukebox after a beer or two. Even though I was all by myself, it was pure bliss. I too get shivers when I hear it even now. Wonderful.
Worcester Telegram & Gazette, October 28, 2022; Bruce Arnold, co-founder of Orpheus, remembered by Worcester friends and musicians, by Richard Duckett--Bruce Arnold, a founder of the Worcester rock group Orpheus and the writer and lead vocalist of its atmospheric 1968 hit "Can't Find the Time," "had a big heart and tons of passion," recalled his friend and fellow bandmate and Worcesterite Howie Hersh. Arnold was also extremely animated, "like standing next to a ball of fire," Hersh said. "It was not all of a sudden." Arnold has been unwell for a while and died several days ago, but the family wanted to keep matters private before making the announcement. After signing with MGM Records, Orpheus released four quite successful and well-regarded albums between 1968 and '71 and toured the country. Then in 2014, after a gap of about 40 years, Arnold, who lived many years in Marin County in California, returned to Worcester to perform a concert titled "Orpheus: The Homecoming" that was held at Mechanics Hall. Arnold was happy at the prospect, as he related in an interview with the Telegram & Gazette. "I want to see everybody. I want to talk to everybody. I want to hear their Orpheus stories," Arnold said. No other information about Arnold's death was immediately available, but friends and fellow musicians have been reacting with sadness to the death of Arnold, and pointing out his place in Worcester's music history. Local Worcester music veteran Walter Crockett went to junior and high school with Arnold. " 'Can't Find The Time' was the first hit to come out of Worcester in the rock 'n' roll era, and it was a great pop song, much in the genre of the Association, but original," Crockett said. "Can't Find the Time" was the first release from the band's eponymous debut LP in 1968. A love song, it had a mesmerizing flavor and flow to an orchestral arrangement and the refrain of "I can't find the time to tell you." The song had re-releases and various interpretations, including one by Hootie & The Blowfish heard in the movie "Me, Myself and Irene." While together, Orpheus played on the same bill with a number of major acts of the era, including Cream, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, The Who and many others.
I listened to Hootie and Blowfish singing this song, one of the best songs of the 60s..... they did o.k. but it doesn’t begin to touch my soul as ORPHEOUS did. Just think about this.....52 years later and still loving this standard, music like this never dies. I was lucky enough to be listening to music of the 60s and on......younger generation never had the opportunity to experience really good groups and artists.
And now, a new version by The Explorers Club ft. Steven Page (formerly of Barenaked Ladies)!
rwzb.2.vu/3
It was written by Bruce Arnold, lead singer of Orpheus in 1968. Hootie and the Blowfish didn't form until 1986.
HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH INFERIOR TO ORPHEUS ON THIS.
F Hoodie and the Blowfish.
Rest In Peace, Bruce. Thanks for the beautiful music....
RIP Bruce Arnold! What a great talent....
Thanks for the music, Bruce. R.I.P.
always loved this tune....RIP Bruce Arnold
...and I can't believe i am still listening to this song in 2023.
This was the slow, slow song that every boy and girl waited for at high school dances. One of the local Boston bands, The Techniques, played it soooo well. Bah, Bah, Bah.
I love this song. So happy I found it. Brings me back to when I was 16.
GREAT song - a true CLASSIC!
Outstanding from the years gone by. I am young for a few minutes.
This song has haunted me again..Great memories of the 60's. I remember who I was with, what I was doing, and so happy to be living in that era and coming of age too. Thank you, Orpheus.
This song takes me somewhere good..everytime i hear it❤🌍♥️lots of love from Scotland
This song brings back the feeling of being a young teenager on the South Shore, and listening to my transistor on the beach....
Catching snippets of songs from the blankets as we walked the beach, some WRKO, WILD, Ken Coleman calling the play by play at Fenway, smelling Noxema, & salt air. I think I quoted this song in my yearbook - Wish I could get that time back - to tell some people, gone now, how much they meant to me.
Listening on my GE transistor radio at Duxbury Beach.... Sweet memories
Nantasket Beach !☮️😁❤️
Yes
Where on the South Shore, Mate? Curious, in general - not in specific. I was raised in Cohasset.
Transistor radio? There's an old term, no longer used.
I hope my grandchildren have a song that takes them to a happy place in their hearts as this song does for my generation. I’m not thinking it’s gonna be from Kanye , Taylor or Doja Cat … but I hope they find one .
Maybe Tom Misch and The Explorers Club. They are big Orpheus fans.
Brings you right back to that moment!
So sad to hear of Bruce Arnold's passing. I've loved this song since I was young. Great song. Rest in Peace Bruce.
I had the album this song was on, played it continually when I was in HS. One of my very very favorites from the 60s.
My first concert for my 14th birthday to see Orphus at the Commodore in Lowell MA what a great night that was.
I remember them. They lived in the house my friend's family owned at the time near Pleasant st. Worcester, Mass. Fun hippie area at the time. They toured with big rock bands too as I remember.
Just a couple years back I stumbled on this awesome song and great band while I was searching for some 1960’s artists. I have to say that I’m very happy that I listened to “ Can’t find the time “ song it simply turns rough day into a wonderful day. I know that I’m not that old but I honestly only listen to 1950’s to 1970’s music I wish that I could’ve been around when music was music. When people sung because they loved to sing and make others smile. I’m sure it wasn’t about the money cause we all know that they didn’t get paid much. So just for that I would like to say thank you to all the wonderful bands that gifted us with there amazing musicians and voices. Where else in music history can it be as amazing as it was back in the 60’s and 70’s era ? Thank you again for your wonderful gift to us fans.
Awesome post
Another great song of 69. The year l found the woman of my dreams. The love of my life. 32 wonderful years together. Now god has her. Love you Susie xo. Forever plus 1. Your loving husband. See you one day.
MY empathy George, I lost two, one at 37 and the other at 56, wonderful women.
Songs like this are the best time machines...it can take you back to those special moments as soon as you hear them.
i love this song and way he said ''baby you r wrong.......love you guys....
As terrible a year as '68 was-------this Masterpiece helped me get through it. Thank-you, Bruce Arnold & Orpheus. -------------------MJL, 76 y/o
From the Fall of '68, an all-time classic, i never tire of hearing. Thank-you Bruce Arnold et al, for this wonderful music of my life.---------------MJL, 76 y/o
I was a toddler when this song came out. However, when I was a teenager in the 1980s, there was this one oldies radio station in my area that familiarized me with this group. I was so glad to find out about their music and have been listening to their music since then.
Thanks again. We need this in 2020 with this Pandemic. We’ll see you there next year ! 💥🤗
Love, love this song! Remember when it was first out!
I've always loved this hauntingly beautiful song. Takes me back to my youth. Such sweet memories.
Yes, so beautiful.
Yes, I love his voice...who knew the quiet one had the strongest voice.
Sharon G, Yes, It sure is "Haunting"..I love it.
Love this song. My band played it back in the day. What great harmonies!
Never heard this before now. It resembles all those great 1968-69 sunshine pop songs. Beautiful harmonies.
I Can't Find The Time To Tell You was always the last slow dance played at our high school dances at central Catholic High School in Lawrence...great memories. Thank you, Orpheus!
According to our records, Orpheus did a concert with The Grass Roots at Central Catholic High School on February 15th, 1970. The performance was part of Merrimack College's "Winter Weekend IX" festivities. The show quickly sold out, however hundreds of kids still showed up so the band set up a PA outside the gymnasium so they could at least hear the show.
I was 10 when this was on the radio in 1969.Sounds even better today, than it did back then. Thanks for bringing back a pleasant memory for me.
Was my girlfriend and my favorite song way back then. We claimed it as our own. It was played at every school dance then. We also loved the older song by Gerry and the Pacemakers, which was also a 'slow dance' played at the school dances back then. 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying'. Brings back great memories. Sadly after more than 20 years together Gerry's song became the more appropriate. "Cherish' is another that brings back the memories. Great songs.
I remember liking the oldies when I was a kid; this song could still be heard back in the 70s. Such a sweet song! I love the melody.
One of my favorite songs. I never hear it on the radio.
Brilliant there are not enough words to describe this band
I was 14 and a guitar player I was playing in a folk mass. I learned to play at age 11. One of the guys came in and played the riff to this song ! It’s haunted me for 50 years! Finally found this song last night! I’m 65! It just doesn’t get any better than this! ❤️
Still in love. 😌🥰😍🤗
A great band from Boston👍👍👍👍
Worcester actually.
Hampton Beach N.H. 1968. 10 years old. The Hatch Shell with the Atlantic ocean behind them. Put me in a spell that never left me and now I am covering this song in a three piece band in Western Mass. It wasn't The BEATLES on Ed Sullivan which I watched with my older sisters that made me want to play. It was that warm summer evening sitting in the front row of the hatch shell watching Orpheus. Yeaah.
I saw Orpheus play at the Campus Pond at UMASS Amherst in the spring of 1968 and I was in. They still give me goosebumps today nearly 50 years later.
We have photos from that concert on our Facebook page.
i watched them on "swingin' time" in detroit=50 years ago!
I was there also. My freshman year. They were the best. I always think of those days at UMASS when I hear. Also saw them at Revere Stadium.
@@susansawiki2318 Was that an in-studio performance or tape? Let us know: info@orpheusband.com
I think it was a tape. Robin Seymour was the host. And I remember coming home from school 🏫 and watching around 4:00 🕓 pm
I was born in 1969. I didn't find this song until a movie I watched last year (Greatest Beer Run Ever) introduced me to it. I had it on heavy rotation after that. I just noticed yesterday that it was gone from Apple music so now I have to come to RUclips to get my fix. This song is just so catchy and fun to sing along with.
Maybe the Greatest song ever written and played. Just watching me, myself and Irene. Just remembering my old days ✌👍
I couldn't tell a lie in a thousands ages, I Love this Song..
The best song ever most people don’t know!
SO sad to hear of Bruce's Passing!...One of My Favorite hits of the 60's!...R.I.P Bruce!! 10/27/2022
That was one of my favorite tunes. Brought back some great memories.....
Fell in love in 1968 with the song and a boy. Great memories.
I absolutely loved this group and to this day, still listen to their "The Very Best of Orpheus" CD. What a great sound they created, their lead singer had a voice that was mesmerizing.
What a beautiful song about a man's love for a woman's love
Another a great song of the 60s. I was surprised to find it just a couple of years ago. Wondering how I missed it back then, I realized that while in the Navy, I was out on a 3 month submarine patrol. We missed everything that happened back in the USA while under.
Was 9 years old looking at the prudential building in Boston ma when l heard this song in the summer it first came out. I loved the melody and beautiful harmony. When I hear it again today it brings me back to that place and the magic of music lives on.
I have many favorite songs but this is my all time favorite!
😊❤😊
I'm so sorry for his fans. Bruce Arnold has passed away at age 76.
WOW what a great song nice to hear again.Rock on
one of the very most wonderful songs ever written and we have adored the song and your band ever since it ruled the charts!
Thee Identicals
IT WAS NOT A BIG HIT UNFORTUNATELY IT ONLY MADE IT TO NUMBER 80 ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100. IT IS STILL A WONDERFUL SONG I LOVE THE ROSE COLORED GLASS VERSION TOO.
Gives me the chills
Beautiful song......... good music touches every cell in our heart & soul...
The memories that this song brings back are priceless.
I mistakingly hit the thumbs down; Blesphemy! Yes, the memories of it. I think it was out in the Autumn.
I can't believe you are gone Bruce. Rest Easy! Thank you for this classic.
2020 Still listening to this song! Brings back a mix of emotions for me. One of my favorites from the 60s
R.I.P., Bruce - THANK you for your GRACIOUSNESS :)
memories of 1968 bought the album and still have it
This and Circus Maximus "Wind" are my favorite tunes from this era. The short-lived WBZ-FM played both a lot.
My good friend just passed away .this was his favorite song . He told me the night before he left for Vietnam. he danced with his girl friend to this ,
I remember this song from the bars near Iona College in New Rochelle NY in the early 70s. It was the most played song on the jukeboxes, especially in the Church Key. It brings back great memories every time I hear this song. Never heard it on NYC radio though. I lost my copy of the CD, and now it’s very hard to find (except on RUclips).
Both "The Best of Orpheus" (Ace / Big Beat, 1996) compilation and "The Very Best of Orpheus" (Varese Sarabande, 2001,) are on eBay. New album and vinyl reissues in the works as well as a multi-volume compilation of never-before-heard demos, alternate takes and live performances from the late Bruce Arnold's archives.
The beaches on south shore and cape cod early 70's best times... Never forgotten
how could this not have been a top 10 or top 5 billboard hit it makes absolutely no sense to me. such a beautiful song
In this interview, Orpheus frontman Bruce Arnold discusses the circumstances that led to his song not being recognized as a national top 40 hit despite reaching the top ten in nearly every major radio market.

@@orpheusband This song hugs on to your heart strings the first time I heard it. Still Love it.
Truly a gem of a tune from the late 60s. Loved it the first time I heard it on WOR FM in NYC.
Yes till they changed format and the music migrated to WNEW FM
I first encountered Orpheous in 1968 at Drew University where they were the opening act for the Who . This song stayed with me for years and when in the mid 70's I heard it on the car radio it brought back memories .
One of my all time favorite songs
I was at that concert as well! And there weren't many of us who were. The concert lost a lot of money as tickets didn't sell well ($11.00 each as I recall) and nobody knew The Who,yet they got paid hundreds of dollars! LOL
Odd how time plays tricks as I recall a well attended concert but then I had hitchhiked from Trenton to Madison with mo clue where I was going lol. Mainly to see the Who . They were somewhat popular at the TSC campus . Orpheus was an unexpected bonus . Surprisingly , many concerts did not do well then for what ever reason .
Orpheus has reunited and is currently touring. Check them out on Facebook: facebook.com/OfficialOrpheus
Orpheus played at our 1969 prom at Delbarton School Morristown NJ. I have loved this song for many years and still sing it in the shower at the top of my lungs. I ran across a copy BEST OF and gladly paid $23 for it. We used to sing as close to Bruce's voice as you could get. I LOVE IT-Thank you.
a true classic from my beloved Orpheus ❤
Hauntingly beautiful song.
They are so great! Beyond incredible. Only in Massachusetts!
I grew up with Orpheus in the Boston area. A couple friends and I would get together and play guitars and sing their songs ... wishing we could sound just half as good as them. Saw them at Archbishop Williams HS in Braintree, MA around 1970. Saw them again this summer at the Marin County Fair (San Rafael, CA). Much has changed with the band over the last 40+ years (duh) but they still sound good. It was very cool to see Bruce Arnold's son as his co-front man. Hope I can see (I'd settle for hear) them again in another 40 years.
***** Thanks for the comment Steve. Do you recall the date that we played Archbishop Williams High School?
@@orpheusband I believe that was the fall of 1969.....
Seen them 1968 surf nantasket stop the people in their tracks when they started to sing this song blew everyone away. Group from Dorchester was always playing lenny and something. Forget there name .I believe was first time they sang it live .Jimmy from charlestown
Here I am in November of 2019 still listening to my favorite tune! 😎
Me too!
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Rest in peace Bruce Arnold.
I just viewed a recent Donovan concert on You Tube, with Season of the witch being my favorite tune of that era. Then I thought of a total gem from 1969 "I Can't Find the time to tell you" by Orpheus. This song was one of my favorite love songs of 1969 & still is today. Keeping in mind that my favorite 3 bands of the time were the Allman Bros., Frank Zappa & the Mothers, & the Band, I always have loved beautiful ballads in general, and this one in particular. WNEW-FM in NY< used to play the extended version, and I thank you for sharing this song in particular, because it reminds me of a special girl from that time that I didn't find the time to tell. I found the love of my life in 1972, & we've been a couple for42 years, & married for almost 37 yrs., through thick & thin, And I definitely will find the time to tell her more that I love her. This song taught me once that by sharing the fact that you do love a person, will keep your love young everyday. Thanks for sharing this rare gem of a song. Peace.
I first saw Orpheus on a morning show when I was in D.C. many decades ago. I have been a fan ever since. This is my favorite song hands down.
Maybe someone can find that show. Do you recall the name or the host?
@@tolanstout Sorry I don't remember.
@@ElizabethBanas123 Did they perform live on the show?
@@tolanstout I don't remember. Sorry! What I do remember is that we were in D.C. after school was out for the summer. Wish I could be more helpful. All I know is that was the first time I saw them and I fell in love with their music.
Love, love, love Orpheus!
I remember them having dinner at Pewter Pot in Boston in '68....can't believe it was 50 years ago.
Recently had this song pop up on my youtube list and played it. Since then I have played it over twenty times -- including falling asleep to it. It is hauntingly beautiful -- up there with Stairway to Heaven and Nights in White Satin -- Bruce Arnold's talent so underrated and how hot was he in 1969!
Thanks for the kind words!
This song affects me deeply from the 60's...I did not hear it for many years. They don't play it...It just popped into my head 4 years ago! I love it so much.
Thank You, Orpheus for comment..The song came into my head completely "out of the blue"". Didn't hear it on radio, was just doing things like house chores, and the melody was in my brain..It is so gorgeous..thanks for those times.
The brain "knows" a good thing when it first "set into" it.

From a place, I once lived and worked in, this is Orpheus, the band from Worcester, Massachusetts!
So , so many memories of my youth where did the time go.
I just heard that the incredibly talented Bruce Arnold has passed away today, October 27, 2022…so deeply sorry. Sending prayers and sincerest condolences to his family and friends. 🎶💔
