This is 7th-8th grade for me, very late 1967-early 1968. Bits of the Association, Spanky & Our Gang, Friends of Distinction, Cowsills, sunshine vocal pop. That was back when harmony vocals were still popular in all forms of music other than metal and funk. In 1968, I was white, middle class, and too young to be murdered by my country, so life was good.
...another work of art of those times...that range of sounds, instruments in perfect harmony and symbiosis...where did it come from then, that invention, that ability to realize such a demanding project with so many musicians...these gems are still preserved and there are searching people who remind us of these gems...
This is the reference for all Physc/Pop.... Great LP- Says a lot about what's played on the air (I recommend staying a few hrs in a record store you'll find gems like this all the time)....
It’s Christmas Day, 2022, and Orpheus are destroying me, in a beautiful way. Earlier in the day we watched Me, Myself & Irene, just for laughs. And here I am, now, crying my eyes out to this sublime music. Thank you Farelly Bros for using Can’t Find The Time on the OST. That’s lead me here, and I’m loving discovering Orpheus. RIP Bruce Arnold. Thanks to you, and all the Orpheus players, for such a beautiful legacy of songs ❤
I'm from Russia and I really like this album, i heard it a year ago when I was 19, I listened to it on repeat every day and enjoyed every sound of these songs, then I discovered the rest of Orpheus' albums, I think I'm the main Russian fan, me I was very inspired by this music when I created my own.. I am very grateful..
Glad to find this video. My brother was a college radio station DJ in the late 1960s in Worcester and he brought home a demo of this album.I'd never heard of them but I liked their music and hadn't heard them in 50 years. Nice memories!
Met this band since i was 25yrds,and now i am aged 39,never forget how billiant they are, every songs touch my heart and soul, they are timeless, thank you Bruce and Orpheus❤❤
" Lesley's World" & " Dream" are , vocally, so note-perfect, it's easy to dismiss. Bruce's delivery is just so expressive & warm, both are just gorgeous. Again Bruce, Thank-you. ---------------WolfSky9
Holy Guacamole!!! I’m having one of those rare musico-spiritual epiphanies listening to this. I love it when I find ‘new’ music (new to me, that is), and it just totally connects with me. Like this does. I found Orpheus thanks to the Farelly Bros (for which I’ll be eternally grateful), as I suspect many will do? What a great group! It’s a pity it’s not easier to get all their albums on CD nowadays. I’ve ordered the Sarabande compilation. But I want all their stuff! I’ve been gorging on it for several hours now, since watching ‘Me Myself & Irene’, and then Googling ‘Can’t Find The Time’, and discovering Orpheus. Not one duff track yet. What a group! ❤️
Bruce, you had an absolutely note-perfect, easy on the ears, baritone. it's a voice I never, ever tire of hearing. -------Thank-you & all of Orpheus. -------------------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o
Just discovered this album for the first time today … unusual how it never popped up on my radar, as it’s right up my alley. Actually discovered it by reading that Laura Nyro liked it. Should have known she had great taste.
She had two sets of all four albums. Other notable fans include Miles Davis, Brad Delp, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker, Elvis Costello, Jerry Harrison, Joe Perry, Matthew Sweet, The B52's and film director David Lynch.
Very 1st album I ever bought at age 12. Like so many other albums, you buy it for one song in particular (Can't Find the Time To Tell You) only to discover all the other great songs. Love the album. Being from Worcester, MA as was Orpheus may be the reason why it was my 1st album.
Listening to this album for the very 1st time : more than anything, I was just in awe of Bruce's perfect, mid-baritone voice. -------so much of the album is recorded using a minimum of note changes ------& the range is very small, but it's done so well , much like how Karen Carpenter at her best, recorded using very few note changes. -----------------Thank-you Again, Orp0heus. ------------Wolfsky9
On my third time listening to it in a row. It is indeed a masterpiece. I just feel Bruce Arnold's warm personality come out in these beautiful songs. Ageless and timeless I can just see my grandchildren singing to these songs and finding comfort in Bruce's words!
I have probably listened to this album more than 100 times since I purchased it in the 60s. Still have my copy. I agree with mysticmaverick1 that "Can't Find The Time To Tell You" is a perfect song ... the type of song I wish I had written. From 1971 - 1973, I played in a duo and traveled on the lounge circuit in the central United States. My musical partner and I used to perform our cover of this song. We recorded an album of our original music and were very much influenced by the music on this Orpheus album. I will continue to enjoy it.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Saw them live once and they were awesome! Listening to this wonderful album makes me feel like I am back at Univ. of Bridgeport where I played guitar in a local rock band and we did Orpheus songs! Was a fantastic time for me! Will never ever forget it, nor will I forget Orpheus!
Thank you, Bruce for giving our world such beautiful and meaningful music! I still perform your songs with my friends whenever we get together, or even when we get to "play out". Lots of people recognize it and still love it as we do!
Some of these songs are not so easy to find with this good of audio that your album has. I'm an Orpheus fan. I thank you so much for posting this album here on RUclips.
One of my all-time favorite albums. The strings were such an odd choice for the time, but they really work and it made Orpheus stand out from all the other bands from that period. Bravo, Bruce.
What an uncanny blend of psychedelic sensibility and sophisticated 1960s tunes, harmony, and arrangements. If I’ve heard it all, it would probably be on Tony Coulter’s show on WFMU
In the 1960s when the local A.M. radio stations in western Ohio powered down at sunset, I could pull in the signal from Boston's WBZ (Radio 103). Rock jock Juicie Brucie Bradley played songs from this album every night and made me a rabid fan, especially of Bruce Arnold's lead vocals. I thought this music was the East Coast equivalent of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys at their "Pet Sounds" best. Still think so.
I had to special order this album in the 70s. Orpheus aged at our Soph/Frosh picnic at UMass in 1969? It is one of my favorite albums. The Beatles? Who?
I own this album-------& on 1st hearing it, I was blown away by Bruces fantastic, emotional voice. -------Note-perfect harmony, well arranged & produced -------------------I love this album. MY # 2 favorite : " Lesley's World " -------------Bruce, your voice was just beautiful. ----------------------------Wolfsky9, 72 y/o
i was only 7 years old when "can't find the time" first came on the radio, but i remember it well. it's a classic! i was shocked to learn recently that it never cracked the top 40. shocked! i hated the version by Rose Colored Glass and theirs charted higher. where's the justice? also think "The Dream" is a great tune. peace.
I own this album, & it's an absolute masterwork. Cut # 2 : " Lesley's World" is just gorgeous, & ought to have been a single release. -----Thank-you Bruce for bringing this album to YT !! ------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o & a Fan, 4-Ever.
Orpheus is currently at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County recording material for a new Orpheus album. Check out the band's Facebook page for the latest news on upcoming shows and new releases: facebook.com/OfficialOrpheus
Never realized that Collin Walcott played on this recording. He would shortly go on to co-found Oregon. Excellent musician who died quite young. Car accident while on tour with Oregon.
Orpheus are a fantastic band. They are better than The Doors much better. This is the essence of the best of the 60s the most serene and beautiful aspects of that magical time. Bruce has such a sweet voice. I love their music.
You are very welcome. All four albums I am looking for vinyl copies of . Do you have any spares? Funny that lesser quality Bosstown Sound things are also collectible, but quite honestly it was a great music scene. Your arch enemy Alan Lorber was the one who spoiled everything. He made up an overzealous hype for his own smug and smarmy self and ripped your band off. I feel that had it just happened naturally we'd be looking at Boston music in a different brighter light than that. I love the music. Of course the hype was just a business mogul and a corrupt one at that. Chameleon Church is quite a good album too.
Sorry no. But if you find some, feel free to send to Bruce and he'll sign them for you. Contact info@orpheusband.com and they'll make the arrangements.
If you're looking for a clean copy of the LP, both Discogs and eBay are good sources. If you want our first album on CD, there are compilations from Ace / Big Beat and Akarma but we recommend "The Very Best of Orpheus" on Varese Sarabande, which has the highest quality digital transfer. Avoid the IMG (Iris Music Group) by the notorious Alan Lorber as they sonically substandard.
Saw a review in an old edition of Shindig magazine on the Bosstown sound - missed them in the 60s when I was listening to Ultimate Spinach, Flat Earth Society et al - love his -
Despite my usual hipper-than-thou form at age 16, "I can't find the time to tell you" pulled on my heartstrings. Listening to it now, I'd say Chicago's lead singer may have really noticed Erik Gulliksen./ Can't remember where or when I first heard "I'll Stay With You", tender ode to acid trip "babysitters". / Orpheus were essentially straight (conventional) but, well Boston in 1967, there was a quite a scene, from what I heard on the street...but who knows, really knows, or can tell, ha ha, if they preferred powdered or cubed sugar....or if the Orpheus guys had really had an up trip tied in w/ love-falling, or if they're just slick cynical studio hacks exploiting a trend. I bet Gulliksen slept with "Forever Changes". / This album is a curio, love beads, peace medallions, Che posters, Raquel Welch, Batfink...in other words, the strange strange world of 1968.
Eric Gulliksen was the band's live bassist (album featured Joe Mack on bass as well as Bernard Purdie on drums) and had nothing to do with "Can't Find The Time". I composed, arranged and sang it. Terry Kath from Chicago was a big Orpheus fan. We heard a rumor that their management discussed covering "Can't Find The Time" in the 70's. No doubt, we were way ahead of our time.
Bruce, sorry about the personnel confusion. You do have a great voice, a bit like Spandau Ballet's lead singer. I recall a snatch of "Can't Find The Time" used in a TV documentary about the singles scene. The song always reminds me of a striking girl in my high school whose face fused Raquel Welch and Ursula Andress; all I could manage was eye contact.
Thanks for the kind words Jim. That program was called "The Great Mating Game", whiched aired on ABC in April of '68. We were featured in one of the segments, which included "lip-synced" performances of "I'll Stay With You" and "Can't Find The Time". Still looking for a copy of it.

When I was in high school back in the ‘60s, I must have worn the grooves out on this album. RIP, Bruce Arnold. Loved the music then, love it now.

Great lp I have a 1968 uk first stereo vinyl pressing on yellow and black MGM , lovely sounding record , my favourite tune is door knob song.
The first 3 Orpheus albums are all masterpieces. I have all their records, the soundtrack of true lovers❤
This is the reference for all Physc/Pop.... Great LP- Says a lot about what's played on the air (I recommend staying a few hrs in a record store you'll find gems like this all the time)....

One of my Top 10 albums of all time - the perfect album to drift out of your window into the garden on a sunny day ✨☀️

I still have the original LP album....brings back memories of wonderful times in college...a distraction to what was really going on in the world.
oh man. its 68 again and I am in my bedroom in West Hartford feeling pretty good about my taste in music.
They were a great band and made really fine music, I loved them in the 70's and still do :)))
Decades later and it still sounds great. Thanks Bruce.
After vietnam war orpheus hits was so great ithough it will make all new i was 12 1970.

Such a lovely album produced during the psychedelic period with sitars and all. I Can't Find the Time is the most perfect song.
Gorgeous ------simply gorgeous music, the kind we so badly need in 2018. ---------WolfSky9

Odd? It would've been more unusual to NOT have strings on a record in the late 60's.
Alan Lorber did all the arranging and production.
It's 1968, my senior year Garland School, Chester, New Jersey 07930. . .
Such fun upbeat music!
OMG, I'm all choked up-------it's '68 once more, & my life is all ahead of me ! ----------WolfSky9, 71 y/o
Rumor is Terry Kath was a big fan of Orpheus. I can hear how this may have influenced some early CTA tunes. Harmonies and chord changes.

Look forward to the new album Bruce.
Never realized that Collin Walcott played on this recording. He would shortly go on to co-found Oregon. Excellent musician who died quite young. Car accident while on tour with Oregon.
Also played on our second album. Very sweet and talented man - plus he loved our music.
Collin died in East Germany while in Oregon. Weird, huh?

SHiNDIG needs to a feature on Orpheus.
Elvis Costello brought me here.
I love this band and album. Too bad it's not available on cd for a reasonable price.
Stay tuned!
We might had heard more of them if they were on Elektra rather than MGM.
