Dave, there are camera straps that clip on and off from your camera, those are great for windy situations. Great videos, I enjoy your work and hikes
Peak design is great for this!
@@travelingtricia Peak Design makes a great strap but it may be heavier than he wants. He cuts weight by the oz. Lol
Thanks! Spending a lot of time shooting in high wind I've noticed that strap vs no strap makes a negligible difference since the camera & tripod takes way more wind loading than the strap. This assumes the correct shooting technique is used (included below)
Wind facing surface area of the camera, lens, & tripod is way bigger than the strap so you might get a slight reduction by taking the strap off but it won't solve the camera shake issue so you need to make changes in shooting technique to solve the issue or your images will be out of focus with any wind at all.
An analogy. Walk directly into high wind with your arms tucked directly in front of your body. Now do it with your arms to the sides of your body in the wind stream. You will feel more wind load over all with the arms to the side by it's not much more. You may not even notice it. Your arms are the camera strap. Your body is the camera body, lens, and tripod.
Here are my steps for any windy shot. Images always end up sharp and the strap is always on.
1. Time your shots when there is no wind. Notice in the video I never have a shot go off when the wind is blowing. 2. Shoot at faster shutter speeds approx. 1/focal length works well on the conservative side. 3. Always check focus after each shot up the entire vertical of the centerline and 4. take at least 3-4 shots of the composition when shooting in any wind at all. I'll review my images this Sunday since everyone is asking this question. All are sharp. No issues.
I have a Peak Design camera strap that I can remove and install in seconds. I think the camera has less shake without the strap wafting around. Even when the wind is only mild.
nice to see you back Dave!
Fantastic to see your adventures and the terrific images of the mountains you captured along the way, stay safe and look forward to many more
First video of yours I've watched since you came back Dave - and it was fantastic.. The unique nature of this video, and your passion, make it a joy to watch.
My younger hiking days are gone but photography remains. Love walking along with you to places that I can no longer conquer. Thanks for sharing these beautiful spots.
The way you enjoy landscape photography feels very familiar to me. I'm not on your level yet but spending a week out exploring and camping either in the wild or in my car is pure bliss. That is true freedom for me. Being able to go where I want to, when I want to and seeing the beauty nature has to offer. Love it!
That's awesome Felix. Love it. I don't think there is a "level" per say. What I'm doing is not any better than what you are doing. Were both on an adventure that we enjoy. All that matters in my opinion. Keep going man!
fab pics and Location Dave. some great images
Awesome warm colours in this cold environment, and beautifully crafted video, thank you! What you say about exploring the wilderness along with your own limits make me wonder: am I the only one feeling uneasy alone in the wild at night? Could you talk one day about how to overcome the fear of darkness? The thought of my own vulnerability, blind in the dark, alone in my fragile tent, stops me from life changing experiences which so many people seem to enjoy.
You get used to it:)
Wow ❣
Are you concern of bears/wolves (if any) ? What items do you take for safety/protection?
Great video and images man
Thanks @Nick Page, great to hear from you man!
Dave, when you don't have the colors that you want but such a beautiful scenery, perhaps you could do a black and white shot. That would look awesome.
Do you plan on doing a camera setting/workflow video with your new camera?
Another great vlog Dave and stunning vistas and totally jealous mate. Really like you4 contact you have with Mother Nature and how you absorb it all. What sort of food do you carry when your out, as carrying a weeks worth seems a lot of weight but I’m sure you carry freeze dried supplies.
I had to laugh on Sunday Q&A at the end when you stated you weren’t that good at RUclips stuff, but 47k followers suggest we all think you are mate. Stay safe and keep well?
Great questions. Thank you!
I haven't switched to a mirrorless camera yet. I currently shoot (since 1984 actually) Nikon, but with their financial troubles lately do you see a long term path for Nikon to pull out of this downward spiral they find themselves in over the last year or two. Wondering if I should be considering Sony?
Dave, I noticed that in this video, apart from the stunning scenery, was your flapping camera strap. Wouldn't it be better to invest in a removeable strap like Peak Design for places like this?
Always enjoy the videos-always inspiring and informative of your process! Nice work!
Dave...great video. What tent are you using. Thanks for any information!
Lol Dave! I was there early last summer. I did 5 days backpacking heading up north. Outstanding/breathtaking spot for sure! Great video as always.
just mind blowing pics, Dave!
woow!
Have you ever had a dangerous encounter or incident with the animals?
Beautiful place! Thanks for sharing this
Amazing favorites of yours, I can see why.
Again a great Video with this enjoyable mixture of hiking, photography and photos with your informations. Thanks for that. I agree your Idee with combining hiking and photography. It makes both so much more rich. In my case its just traveling, but I love to combine it and enjoy both. Being in remote landscape is for sure the best to enjoy everything quite more... By the way it's misteriouse for me peoble give a thumb down. I wonder what they expect and I think they never created some content and they can't see how well are you doing.
Beautiful scenery! Where is this? North western US? Canada?
Hi Dave, when the wind is blowing as much as it was, isn't it better too take your Camera Strap off to reduce the amount of camera shake?
Absolutely. I usually take the images I really care about before / after the video & will wrap it on my tripod. My new camera has a small cord for a strap, which I think might be a better method.
Love this area. Camped there twice. You were smart to not stay in the wind -- I made that mistake, also during a very dry time of year, and woke up buried in a layer of sand that covered me and everything inside my tent. Not the best experience! This was on the exposed outcrop by the first glacier.
Anyway, QUESTION: any fear of bears? Last September I got woken up by a bear outside my tent at night in the Olympics. I tried to make myself known by talking calmly, but it must have gotten surprised so there was a lot of jaw popping and huffing. The volume and proximity were pretty terrifying. (All scented items were in an opsack inside a bear can far away.) Have to say, I have a bit of a fear since then, even though risk is statistically low.
THIS is what I have missed! Excellent and inspiring (even with the soso light), thank you!
Love your videos, Dave! Do you use a microphone when you're recoding video? If so, what are you using? It sounds good even with all of the wind!
Thanks! It's here under cameras. www.davemorrowphotography.com/p/whats-in-dave-morrows-camera-bag.html That wind was horrible. Used some clean up in editing but the mic is really good if you set it up like on that page.
Thank you!!
How do you manage hydration when moving on trail? When backpacking I often drink while moving. It looks like you seem to have to stop in order to drink? Or is there a way you still hydrate while moving? Would be curious to know!
Totally amazing images, but that's not surprising, but I'm a bit surprised @ 7:00 + that you let the camera strap flap around like that, compromising image quality. I regard you as a mentor and I'm sure you have a reason but there are people out there not aware of the problem. Peace and safety to you brother.
was going to ask exactly the same thing.
Thanks. Here's the answer to the strap. It actually doesn't matter much:) ruclips.net/video/A_T4GBOb8fk/видео.html
Stunning as usual and tips in tripod management to reduce wind disturbance was new to me. Only using tripod recently (normally hand held) ….
What amazing beauty you travel through and capture. Enjoy the vids very much. Thanks for bringing us along🙏
Inspirational video and images man. Quick question, how do you pack and protect your photography gear in your rucksack when hiking?
Hello Dave, still using your Nikon D810? I saw another video where you had a Nikon Z7 if I am not mistaken? Using any solar gadget to charge your batteries? The cold must drain them quite fast? I thought if you had a medium format how detailed the images could be? I hope you are also making some good sales on these unique images? They would definitely dress up some large murals for anyone buying them. I hear your inspiration during the dialogs in the video but revenues are important to further all your work hopefully from large prints of these vistas? Cheers.
Fantastic video, Dave. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Sensational scenery. We don't get this in Australia! Great video, too, Dave BTW!
You're living the dream. Those photos are totally epic, out of this world. What mountain range is it? Did you say it was in northern Washington State?
ASK A QUESTION - I'll Answer the top voted ones this Sunday!
Pure wilderness David, I love it.
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks again Dave for your inspired living!
That was great ans fun to watch. Makes me wish it was summer instead of -30.
Wow great video and images. Thanks
Magical images Dave and amazing areas, over here in Scotland we are having huge dumps of Snow and we cant head out to any of the areas, roll on some kind of end to this Pandemic.
Your images and video give a lovely boost to this very downtime we are all having just now.
Got say, I'm real jealous watching you go through that kind of scenery.
Really admire your ability to reach these beautiful spots. Another world entirely......
Thanks Bill!
Great stuff! Thank you!
I live in the UK and will never see or meet the things you do, what I'm keen to know is, how do you deal with the wildlife you must come across?
Awesome dude! High quality videos indeed. Thanks amigo
Anytime! Thanks for watching.
Just stumbled across your channel today, great content. Subbed and looking forward to bingeing some more vids. Greetings from Ireland 👍
Awesome, thank you! You guys have some nice mountains.
I've camped on that first pass before. Love this area. Have you done Ice Lakes from Leroy Basin off that first trail?
Solid area! Yeah, barely a trail. Real nice backpacking though. Better than going up the burn side. U?
Another great video Dave. What beautiful places you visit! Thank you so much for sharing them with us (and all your knowledge too).
Amazing as always Dave! Those of us who have never been in the area would never think that Washington state had this kind of Montana-Alaska like mountain ranges. You capture them beautifully.
You seem like a pretty chilled guy. Do you get frustrated when you've put the effort in to be at the right spot at the right time but the conditions; light, wind etc just aren't right? If so, how do you zen out? Great videos, cheers for the work.
What are your thoughts on third party editing panels?. Do you risk not learning/understanding the editing process for speedy/better results in the early stages of our editing careers?. Do you use apps like photo pills, google earth or similar to help plan your trips along with your topo maps. It's a real pleasure to watch your videos.
Dave, I noticed in this video you still have your camera strap on the camera flapping in the wind on the tripod. Do you ever take the strap off or secure it in another way to keep it from catching the wind?
Shooting in the cold weather like you do how long does your batterer's last?
And in the cold does it hurt your camera.
How do you charge you batteries when you are out in the field?
Just carry 1 per day.
WOW! Breathtaking pictures. What a place to be in your zone. I envy you.
I like your hat, but it's not as good as mine, which you stole in Seattle, but then returned in Sweden.
Haha! Horrible hat. Can't believe I had to keep it at my house for that long.
Wow, this exactly looks like valleys of Kashmir.🙏
Do you have a rule-of-thumb for when the HDR suggests exposure bracketing?
Nice location, great pics. Thanks
Awesome stuff. Thanks for taking us along!
What is that light weight looking tent you have?
Awesome collection of images Dave, absolutely stunning. In terms of questions for your next Q&A session, got 2 questions
1. What are your photography/expedition aspirations for 2021?
2. What is your emergency plan if you are unable to extract yourself if you sustain an injury whilst on an expedition?
Good ones!
As usual Dave , great inspirational fantastic images and wilderness exploration, your teaching tecniques are superb in your Landscape photography school, just got some good shots myself from a rainforest hike over 3 days.
Great work Dave , thanks for the most extensive coverage of landscape photography information and teachings I have ever seen.
All the best Paul.
Thanks so much Paul! I'm really glad you like it. Nice! Rainforest is hard to shoot. Good job.
These dawn/dusk shots are simply magnificent man. North Cascades have it all if you can find your way to where you're getting. Quite an intimidating wilderness though.
Real intimidating. The most in the lower 48 I'd say... That place is a jungle
Great views Dave! The vibration you were getting was enlisting the help of your camera strap, straps are inherently grouchy. The wind wiping it around couldn't have helped loo. I set a rock on mine to tighten and add stabilization, or remove it.
Thanks. Here's the answer to the strap. It actually doesn't matter much:) ruclips.net/video/A_T4GBOb8fk/видео.html
Welcome back Dave, I have missed your inspirational videos. I have most of your training material from before yo went into social media hibernation, what is going to be the difference in your new training site?
Hi Peter. Thanks for purchasing the past courses. The new site contains hundreds of videos on all skills related to landscape photography. Also new videos are published each month. I'm building out all of my photography knowledge & outdoor knowledge into one place that all interlinks. It's a system for learning every there is. Email me if you want to have a look Dave@DaveMorrowPhotography.com
Beautiful video and images as always Dave. I want to ask what shelter you're using on most of these trips and if there's a reason you aren't packing something a bit smaller considering it's just you most of the time?
Great question. That tent weighs 1 lb and it's a 2 person. Zpacks Duplex. It's not fun to wait out a 3 day storm in a 1 person tent, trust me:)
were you using the timer function on your camera ?
3 second delay.
Love your videos and content Dave! Awesome!
Thanks for watching!
amazing photos I love the one at 15:15 !
Thanks!
WTF you're back! Did you lose your GPS?
You must pinch yourself everyday 😂
Wow, another beauty Dave. Thank you!
Thanks for watching David! Always good to hear from you.
@@DaveMorrow You are welcome Dave. As I am getting older now health stuff has crept up on me and I am not able to do the backpacking and travels that I so enjoyed in the past. That's why I love your stuff so much. I kind of live vicariously through the adventures you and Iron do. Funny, you never think that stuff will catch up with you. Wow, what a surprise! Keep doing what you do and enjoy every day, which I am sure you do. Take care. It would be nice to run into you again one day. David
