Just thinking as you explain well here... For such shot of sunset, we must shoot first the foreground, when the light is greater if we are there in advance. Then we can set the exposure for the sky and take multiple shots as we adjust to the coming blue hour.
For sunrise we need to do the opposite and get the foreground last when it is better lit.

Thanks! I try to frame it like this. Everyone has the ability to do anything they want, within the confines of physics of course. It all comes down to, what are you willing to give up in life in one way, to gain that thing in another way. There is almost always a trade off... the real question is, what is more important & is the trade off worth it.

Great video ! I learned so much from you. I just found your channel about two weeks ago looking for lessons on hyperfocal length. From all the channels I found, I liked yours best and after watching a lot of your videos I recently signed up for your online school. Best thing I did this year! Thanks Dave.

Thanks for joining the school, Cor! I really think you'll like it. I will be adding tons of new courses and learning material over there this year. Make sure to let me know how it's going for you:) Thanks again for the kind words. Have a great weekend.

Dave - I love the way you some comfortably describe your knowledge of the wilderness that you are adventuring in and the constant assessment of the lighting potential. You live and breath wilderness photography - part of your DNA! I may have missed it but would like to know what part of the world you are in.

Thx Dave for the great videos. Do you always use spot metering for your landscape photography technique or is it used only because you intended to blend a number of photos with different focal points? Thx

I know it'll seem like a no-brainer to some of you, but why no camp spots at 1:52? Why can't you set up a tent somewhere around?

  • @StephenBridgett

Dave please tell me about your tent. I know you mentioned it in passing one-time. It just seems so rugged but light. That image was amazing. Liked, commented, shared

    Wonderful light and location!
PS I've been meaning to shoot almost this exact spot for a while now -- came across it while scouting on Google Earth. Have you tried to include the river as a leading line? It looks theoretically possible from the spot about a mile N-NW from here, but I wouldn't be surprised if in reality it's completely hidden by trees.

    • @DaveMorrow

Why don't you just set up and do bracketed images and automate it a bit instead of so many adjustments at different times.

Good question. Will add it ot the Q&A List for upcoming video.
