  • GrapplersGuide... - In this 17.5 minute video Jason Scully talks about how he feels many grapplers shrimp inefficiently and are not taking advantage of the drilling opportunity to develop a very necessary skill. He talks about his take on the 3 major shrimping movements that everyone should know.

    Being a three month bjj practioneer I had several aha! moments while watching this video. The examples you gave were extremely helpful and I like your enthusiasm. It would be awesome if you did a video like this on other common bjj drills and give examples on why we do them. It would make drilling much more meaningful. Thanks again.

    This is awesome. I always used to shrimp thinking "this wont really work during sparring". I thought it was just some sort of hip exercise. This discussion conceptualized my whole drill. Awesome 17.5 minutes well spent

    Thank you! Here in Brazil it's called "fuga de quadril" a free translate would be "hip escape" and yes, every gym teaches the wrong way, and yes again we do this drill for basically no reason... We just do this to warm up before the real training starts. Now I'll do the right way not just to warm up, but for a usefull hip escape training.

    I have actually pretty much settled on shrimping the way you show Jason. I see it as the most efficient way of getting down the mat, "loading" the leg in preparation for the next shrimp. It occurs to me that you might want to invert off the shrimp and to do that you would need your bottom leg pulled into your torso like this too. I sometimes do the more traditional "shuffle shrimp" just to have a change or shrimp off the bottom leg in anticipation of a situation where the top leg is somehow constrained.
    All that said, the shrimp as you show it should be the main move to be learned. Got to work on my circle shrimping.

    I just watched this entire video, 17:19. Thank you, sincerely. this and all of your videos are such an excellent resource. I watch them before I go to the gym and it has massively improved my rolling.

    @robbie31580 8 лет назад +1

    Great stuff and the circle shrimping makes so much sense now with side control. I've never truly understood why the basic shrimping never got me out of side control and why side control always frustrated the hell out of me. I do other things to get out of it now. By watching you I've recognized I use some of the movements you show while I'm rolling but not super effectively because I'm not truly drilling those movements while we are warming up. Just great stuff all around! I feel like I could write so much more about all this. I need to watch this a few times and make this a part of my routine.

    I really like this a lot I haven’t tried it yet but I can absolutely see how this is legit just from looking at it. Jiu jitsu is amazing you do these moves 1000’s of times and just when you think you have it you see something like this to remind you that you know nothing all over again. That’s a simple detail that’s about to make or break the fight.

    hi jason
    love your videos, thanks for sharing
    i think its very important to understand what is the purpose of the movement we do in warm up but i believe lots of people do.
    i think the shrimp move is stronger when using the inside leg instead of the traditional outside leg. thats why when used to escape from side the move is done better with two legs\inside leg instead of the regular way.
    the reason we need to train with the regular move is because its un-natural to make an explosive move while leaving one leg straight. this is the main goal in regular shrimping becuase you need the ability to keep the leg relaxed to be able to pull it inside between your opponet legs. i also think you are right and after you have the ability i mentioned you need to understand that the final purpose is to "free" that leg. my point is that i think that if you understand this and train in more then one variation the regular way is also important and usefull. i think that you should make a video that focus more on the diffrence between inside vs outside leg scenarios and the fact that the inside leg have a better levrege to push . thanks again and sorry for my bad english
